Tofino is the most underrated town in Canada - there I said it. Given that, I made a complete guide to exploring Tofino in 2021. What do you guys think? Are you adding Tofino to your list? I still can't believe that this is in Canada. And if you go... get the Tacos.
I’ve lived in Tofino for 5 years now and am happy to clarify any questions anyone has about the topic.
1)HOUSING: Getting housing in Tofino is nearly impossible. True. You don’t look online for this kind of thing. You have to know someone, and even then it’s likely going to be very slumlord accommodations. Same thing goes for staff accomm. People may talk it up but that’s a bunch of BS. Staff accomm in Tofino is one of two things: either dorm room/prison room style, like at Middle Beach Lodge, or if you’re “lucky” it will be a room in an old house in one of Torino’s very few neighbourhoods. Over time, sometimes years, you may get lucky and get upgraded to a small home or a staff accomm with less people living in it, but that totally depends on what accommodations the employer owns. Usually, there aren’t many and they aren’t anything worth bragging about. To get a solid accommodation you have to be very important, ie a working professional. For example, my wife is a healthcare worker and when they had an application for another healthcare professional who couldn’t find housing, her boss (who knows everyone in town) got her bumped up a waiting list for a room in a decent house so she got the place. She was 36th in line. THIRTY-SIXTH in line. For a ROOM IN A HOUSE.Wrap your head around that.
2) Work. It sucks. It’s tourism, it pays horrible, and that’s about it. It has little longevity, most people either burn out and leave Tofino or work remotely to make better money. Tofino is mainly served by twenty-something’s and immigrants (most of which just come up to party for a season/visa and then leave) and who the rich @-holes that own many of the business here extort and pay poor wages and put up in shameful housing situations, as above. Of course, not everyone is like this but good luck finding an employer who pays a living wage AND has good accomm. Doesn’t really exist here as far I know.
3) SMALL TOWN, SMALL POLITICS. I almost puke in my mouth whenever I hear someone mention “vacation rentals” with a polite smile. The FACT is that all locals here that don’t AIRBnB their houses hate them because they are ruining our community. There is a serious housing crisis in BC, especially popular places like Tofino, and I’ve known soooo many people-some families-who wanted to stay here but they got booted because the dickwad owner wanted to do nightly rentals during peak season. This happens so much here it’s almost like it’s a conspiracy theory or something. I’m actually surprised that the gov’t hasn’t done something about this because it should be regulated IMO. I get it, it’s a nuanced problem where some homeowners “need” to do this to supplement their otherwise meagre Tofitian income (which probably is rarely true), but it’s still a problem we all have to face here daily, and it’s rubbed in our faces every time we walk down the beaches and see mega mansions lining the shores that remain vacant for most of the year. The District of Tofino even knows and admits this is a problem, but they don’t do anything about it. These are the kinds of heartbreaking things you will have to have in your face ALL THE TIME if you live here. Basically, what I’m saying is that if you see someone here that calls themselves a “local” and they look energetic, bubbly and happy-go-lucky, they haven’t lived here that long. The politics really burn people out here, especially if you fall in love with the natural beauty of the area, because the area is going to hell in a hand basket (like Whistler) so quickly, it’s just so sad...
Other than those seriously negative connotations about Tofino, it is a beautiful place to live and, if you’re lucky and it’s not a crazy pandemic travel-starved year, you’ll usually get about 4 solid months of peace and quiet from January-April when there is little Tourism and everything settles down. Then, come about May, it’s full tilt in Tofino, and every amenity is taken up by tourists, the locust hordes descend on our 1 large-ish grocery store and clean out everything but soy milk and eggplant, the stupidest (and most dangerous!) drivers you’ve ever seen appear on the roads (and I’ve been to NYC! and LA!), and the town changes from “Locals Only” to “Locals Are The Help: Tofino exists for You, you special little tourist snowflake!
Can you tell that I’m a little bitter? LoL.
Ps. Tacofino is not all it’s cracked up to be IMHO. They are a chain now and I don’t even know where they get their fish from. Wildside Grill has superior food, is locally owned and caught, and actually uses corn tortillas. Which is what a taco is supposed to have.

True, I use to be a local, my boyfriend and I bought a house back in 2013 in Tofino. Alot of people coming to work in There where taken advantage of by slumlords, I invited alot of new friends to stay with me just so they could have a comfortable place to stay. I left because of what the town was becoming, not enough work, no potential to grow and to many people where littering and causing problems for the locals. This place is great to stay for awhile! Beautiful views, great surfing and a peaceful place to relax. But I wouldn't recommend living there again, couldn't imagine what it's like now with the population increasing.
Sorry to hear that you were put off by Tofino. I totally get I though. Since you left, tourism has only got worse, water supply is becoming a huge issue, and the jobs haven’t gotten any better. There are a couple of subsidized housing projects, which are great, but a drop in the pond when it comes to what is needed to solve the housing crisis. Tofino is going the way of Whistler, as you hinted at, and I don’t care what anyone says-that’s NOT a good thing. Really, really heartbreaking to jnow it’s happening; even more heartbreaking to see it with your own eyes…
@@mitcha7819 100% sometimes I feel homesick not being there anymore, but it's just not affordable or as enjoyable as it once was. Every summer we would have tourist come down the driveway. Ignoring all the "private do not enter" and trespassing signs we put up along our drive way. Almost every day they would come onto our property asking for directions or asking if we could lend them cardboard to make a sign(hitchhikers), one family even stopped and took photos of my house while i was gardening. Someone else blocked our drive way while the wine festival was happening. Every little thing kept adding up, I decided to leave after a family on vacation lost it on my boyfriend and I. When we where at Coxbay early one morning, we stumbled upon a fire still going and garbage everywhere! We started cleaning it up since the tide was coming in. That's when some women came screaming out of the resort, saying to not touch her stuff. We told them that it's not okay to pollute the beaches, it needed to be cleaned before the tide came in. She gave the excuse that it's her daughter's wedding and told us to f@#$ off. We kept bumping into more rude and disrespectful tourist, polluting and ruining the environment. I do hope it gets better for the locals though, I hope more affordable accommodation is built and made available for locals. Hopefully more people who care about nature are there to admire it and not distroy it. I'm not surprised with what you said about the shortage of water :/ I'm sure over time they will get that fixed. Just like how they fixed the wifi situation after I left haha. I think Tofino is a victim of its own success though.
Yeah, that sounds pretty typical. Actually, about a year back they banned beach fires entirely in Tofino due to arsehole tourists leaving too much pollution on the beach. I had a buddy who worked for the local fire department and he told me that last summer he got a call to help out 500 fires on Mackenzie Beach. FIVE HUNDRED. Not sure if you remember that beach but it’s not one of the big ones. But that kinda BS was happening all the time, apparently. Also, the tourists/interlopers intruding on private property is a tale as old as time here, I’m afraid. You should check out the Ukee forums where ppl bitch about how often van-lifers will come and take a dump on their front lawn. Absolutely insane but, apparently, more common than you think! Be glad you got out when you did, lol
Great video! I was just in Tofino a couple of weeks ago and I loved it. Also made the trip down to Ucluelet and walked on the Light House Loop. It's an amazing part of the country and definitely worth the trip. I've subscribed so that I can follow along on your adventures. Keep those vids coming!

I grew up in BC, lived in Alberta, and moved to Ontario this year. BC is indeed beautiful but man does it rain a lot and expensive $$$. Cannot overrate affordability and sunshine imo.
I moved to Vancouver in the late 80’s and lived there for 3 years I really enjoyed the time I spent out there but yeah it rains a lot there compared to Ontario I eventually moved back to Ontario I like the weather here more than Vancouver

i am from India Mumbai. our winter season is just like 18°c to 23°c, summer is 30°c to 42°c. so we love overcast, rainy, stormy day. people actually enjoy here in this kind of weather.

You’re wrong about Starbucks in Tofino. If you didn’t find it. I won’t spoil it for you. And also you probably shouldn’t drive Hwy4 late at night unless you know the road well and you have a safe reliable ride.
