Haswell-E i7-5960X Overclocking Impressions

  • We got our hands on the new Haswell-E 5960X from Intel. We of course immediately overclocked it as far as we could push it in as short amount of time as possible. Don't worry we're going to be overclocking it even more in the future with a full custom loop. We did both gaming and computer numbers to see how the new high end chip fares. In addition to performance numbers, we also took temperature readouts and power consumption numbers.

    I was burning in a 5960X the other day using Prime95. I had to render something using a 3D CAD program at the same time, so I stopped Prime95 to render my project. It took about 30 seconds longer than expected. Come to find out, I actually didn't turn off Prime95, but I barely noticed that it was running. These things are honest to god beasts.

    Still running since late 2015 and I am barely looking into overclocking for video editing render speed increases. Testament to how good this CPU and gen was.

    My Core i7 5820K scores 7 points lower in Cinebench than the 5960X scores. Mine's overclocked to 4.6 GHz, however. Though mine loses out once the Extreme Edition gets overclocked.
    Still not bad for a $400 processor. It went into a gaming PC, so there really was no point in me getting anything faster and more expensive. I'm cooling mine on air, by the way.

      Yes. The problem is BF4 isn't all that CPU-intensive game to begin with so... meh. They should have test it on Planetside 2. That game is both CPU-intensive and GPU-intensive so the GPU and CPU runs hot when running that game.

    I AM upgrading as of tonight when I finally order everything. I am coming from the z68 platform; i7 2600K w/ the RoG Maximus Extreme-Z and 32GB of Corsair Vengeance ram. I will be purchasing the Asus Deluxe X99 with the 5960x and 16GB of...well...I'm stuck between Corsair and Gskill. My current rig is all watercooled, chipset and all, by two 360 rads and a 240 rad all in push-pull. The current and will remain current case is a desk-case built by myself, EXTREMELY simular to L3P's desk case. The reason for my upgrade: Mostly just to have an enthusiast grade chip- I've always wanted one, so I have the money now...so why not get one? My current video card is a GTX690; this may stay the case until the 980's come out...then I may sell my 690 for very little to my nephew and go tri-sli for the the 980's. I currently also only have two 1080P monitors. Honestly with the gtx690, it cannot handle more than 2 at a decent FPS; so if I was to upgrade my video cards, I will also probably upgrade to some higher res monitors.

    5 year old i7-920 2.66 oc'd to 3.2 (air) 12GB DDR3 and a 260GTX. Was quite a beast at the time.
    Planning to build a new 4k system sometime next year, not sure what I'll put in it yet since hardware changes.. Right now I'm torn between more cores and higher clock speeds. I'll probably go DDR4 though since the price will have dropped.

    Right now i'm running a 3930k with a gtx 690, looking to upgrade to a 5960x, Rampage V extreme, and 32GB DDR4. Ill be upgrading because besides playing FPS, I do a good amount of photo/video rendering, and use Microsoft Flight Simulator X. FSX is very CPU intensive, and more frames allows for greater immersion. This is critical when you are practicing up on procedures, etc, and need everything to be smooth and responsive.

    just upgraded from my phenom 2 x6 1055t to a 4690k. improvement across the board, the msi guard pro was works fantastically and my ssd performance shot up like mad. game performance went up allot as well on my his 6970 as now games will max out my gpu and utilize it more often, i guess my cpu was doing some funky stuff and that led to certain games not being able to use all of my gpu. very happy, gna get a 980/ti when it is released

    Core i5 2500K running at 4.5Ghz, 12GB DDR3 1600Mhz (2x2gb + 2x4gb), GTX660 Twin Frozr OC Edition. Initially had just the 2x2gb ram hence the weird config. I am considering scrapping the 2x2gb for a 2x8gb for a total of 24gb. I do play some games, but generally I am doing a LOT of stuff all at once so my memory usage is generally 60-80%, and I also do video capture and editing (vhs conversion) which takes up more memory than I imagined.
    I also have a 120GB OCZ Agility III SSD from 3+ years ago that is showing its age compared to my laptop's Samsung 840 Evo...

    I'm thinking of getting the 5820K, problem is I don't know whether to get it or just go for i7 4790K my PC will only be used for gaming, but I also want it to last as long as possible in terms of performance longevity. Seeing the benchmark you posted about Battlefield 4 which is the only game I play at the moment, I'm leaning towards the i7 4790K due to it being much cheaper and only having 3 frames less. Should I just get the 4790K or do you think it isn't a bad idea to go for the 5820K instead?

    Running FM2 here... No need of upgrading. However, I think it's profitable to everyone that X99 exists. I mean, it doesn't hurt the people that do not use it, and it brings in large chunks of money to Intel and motherboard/RAM manufacturers that make DDR4 and 2011-3 motherboards, that they can put on creating products for all price brackets, pay their employes or maybe lower their other prices slightly. Everybody profit from high end stuff!

    You guys should test the chips by compiling code. I would love to see how it can handle that kind of a workload, it's much different than rendering, or doing simulations, and it's something programmers do every day.

  • @Exodus.1337
    @Exodus.1337 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Man Intel better think of a new game plan to get gamers to want these chips... Ever since I've experienced the difference between my old hex i7-970 and current 4770k.. It just doesnt matter any more... such a little difference in actual fps and noticeable performance... and in most cases the 4 core stomps the hex in gaming... and yet again here we are a whole 3 fps... It's exciting seeing a crazy 8 core come out but theres no motivation unless you work with 3d models or level design etc.. None the less, good review like always...

    • @BizzMRK
      @BizzMRK 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats because most games dont support more than 8 threads. Of course you wont notice any difference if 4 threads of the 6core and 8 threads of the 8core arent even utilized. Its not Intels Fault, it is the lazy gaming industry that is developing for console exclusively which would be even outdated in the stoneage. Those CPUs are mostly for Content Creators and Professional Usage anyway. That is why their price tag is so high.

    • @metalgod6661989
      @metalgod6661989 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      These cpu's aren't aimed at gamers at all. Intel never planned for them to be bought by gamers because they know there's no difference in fps. The only reason a pure gamer would buy an x99 chip is for Epeen and that's why intel aren't even trying to promote them as gaming chips

    • @BizzMRK
      @BizzMRK 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I gonna buy one for futureproofness. And in 2015 several games will roll out that are PC exclusive and will support even the 8core. Then in combination with DirectX12 i will have an solid plattform for years on which i even can do heavy workloads.

    • @dableutyef
      @dableutyef 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheLordOfWar
      Future proofing is a bad excuse to buy hardware. First of all there will be other components in the future that matter and may not be compatible with what you have, second of all if you just buy what you need when you need it it's a lot cheaper and doesn't go to waste

    I'm thinking of upgrading from a Core I5 2380p on Z68 to the 5820k and Asus X99 Deluxe for a few reasons. In fact I am thinking of upgrading my entire rig for 4k since the Asus 4k monitor is $600 right now. Plan to pick up the upcoming 2 GTX 980's as well.

    i5 5400K overclocked to 4.3ghz, Maxed out 32gb DDR3 RAM, GTX 570 Fermi Graphics Card Unlocked, P67 R3 MOBO, 3-240 GB OCZ vertex 3 SSD's on RAID 0, in all I love my computer still, it's lightning fast and I won't upgrade until there is something I desperately need that my setup won't run, this new technology is pretty cool, apart from the processor which agreed is impressive on how little power it uses, I would get the X99 Just to run 64 GB of RAM, that would make my day, and honestly If I had a couple grand to plunk down on it willy nilly I would.

    I've been running my 2600k since three years back and I'm pleased :) after about 3 months I OC'd it to 4.2 GHz and had it running at that for two and a half year before I recently restored it back to normal.
    I started out as a gamer but now I'm more into the code and I am in no need of a big, bulky, computer so I'm working on a migration to my Corsair 250D-chassi that is standing next to my main rigg. The only thing I have to decide about is wether or not to buy a used Z68-board or a new Z97 - or should one go for a X99? ...

    I have been running and old EVGA X58 1366 with a 6 core 980X processor and a EVGA 580 VC. All watercooled. I have been toying around with upgrading for sometime. And because I've been in the "X" platform I wanted to wait until the X99 became available to make a decision. Though X99 is a very exciting platform I am not sure you gain much over a tricked out Z97 setup. If you do a lot of video rendering then YES the X99 is the way to go. With those 8 cores the X99 will crush anything out there. However, if you are primarily using the system for gaming you could build a great system with the power efficient Z97. For gaming you really don't need to go crazy on the CPU, you could get by just fine with an i5 (though I would still use an i7) because games don't really utilize the multi-threading of the i7 CPU. Four threads will work great. The video is where most of the magic is happening. As for a video card the sweet spot right now is the GTX 760 with one caveat, I would suggest getting the GTX 760 with 4 gigs of DDR5. With some games 2gigs may not be enough. What it comes down too, as always. You need to ask yourself what YOU need to do with the machine and build a machine to those needs. There are so many good options out there right now and if your not careful you could easily overbuy a machine for what you really need it to do.

    The new intel stuff is pretty much just for bragging rights the z97 stuff is still fine and better than most stuff out there today. Might as well just wait for the 14nm stuff which will bring lower tdp and better overclocking hopefuly

      Beyond 4.6 you wont notice that much difference in performance anyway. And since there isnt a single game out there (yet) that supports 12 or 18 threads those are actualy kinda unfair comparisions. Once Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous come out which will support those cpus since those games arent slowed down by 6 year old hardware next to the TV and DirectX 12 around the corner I am very sure that we will see some nice performance increases. Of course those CPUs and this plattform in general isnt really meant for gamer. X is for Enthusiasts and Professionals. Z is for the majority of people.

      The AMD cpu still has 8 cores the same as the previous cpu's just higher clock speed, The Intel cpu on the other hand has 8 Physical cores 16 threads new architecture not just higher clock speeds

    • @Slay1337pl
      @Slay1337pl 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      And there's the thing with AMD TDP being calculated differently than intel's TDP.

    • @CODman930
      @CODman930 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      AMD aims more towards raw hardware specifications (more cores, higher clock speed, etc), this means that they will have higher TDP chips, Intel on the other hand has worked a lot more in the mobile platform, and uses both hardware specs and CPU technology to run their chips... Intel's mobile development comes into play because they can shrink transistor size allowing for slightly higher performance and a quite major boost in power efficiency, since they have worked with the mobile platform, they can integrate these pros into their desktop cpus much easier, shrinking the transistor size, while still keeping their tech, and using the extra space no longer used by the size of the transistors to add more transistors and other such things to improve performance... This essentially means that since their cpu draws more TDP, it'll run much faster than a cpu by AMD that uses the same TDP... It's not the fact that AMD uses a larger TDP that people complain, its the performance per watt of TDP that people complain about... If the performance were higher, then nobody would be complaining because AMD would have a truly justifiable reason for the power draw.

    I am personally waiting for Broadwell 14nm. I'm coming from a legendary i7 920 running on X58. I have an SSD that my motherboard can't fully use because it still uses SATA1. Its quite sad. Hopefully will upgrade to 6-core and 32GB of DDR4 RAM from 12GB.
    If Broadwell is disappointing could always just stick to the new Haswell-E since its using the new DDR4 RAM as well.
