The Governor General's Foot Guards (GGFG; Canadian Forces) are affiliated with the Coldstream Guards from the UK. Both the GGFG and the Coldstream Guards are part of Household Divisions.
I have to say as a cadet I really admire this, I mean look at that drill it’s perfect. The music fits really well with the sequence, does anyone no what were the songs the band played.
To start with, in Canada we haven't got an All Arms Drill School which maintains a high standard for drill instructors across the army like they have in the Uk. My issue with the Canadian Army isn't the drill but our ceremonial uniforms which aren't cut snug fit the way they do in the British Army and this has a great effect on how the troops look on parade.
If you pay attention the scarlet they use for Guards tunics in the UK it's deeper in color so under artificial light you won't see a loght tint of orange as you see here. Same goes for the kind of Royal Stuart tartan they use for army kilts for Highland Regiments in the UK. The Ministry of Defense standard one is darker as opposed to the civilian lighter color one we use in Canada. I know cause I was in the Canadian Army but I've also worked for a British Army contractor overseas.
You try doing this as a part time job. These are reservists and not full time Military, they are also Infantry so ontop of their other Miltiary and Civilian Duties they do this too. So on that regard these Soldiers did an excellent job on par with the Reg Force drill teams of the United States (Whos primary full time job is to do drill). ~Thanato
Honestly speaking: Being in Cadets. Our drill just seems so much easier so simple. The whole lifting your foot off the ground, that nice bang when it comes down just sounds so nice. I can't really picture myself doing American drill. However, it does look pretty when it's done in a squad/platoon/division :)
Yeap, seems like they are mostly with the GGFG. I used to be in a unit that shares a drill hall with them. I have never been with in GGFG but lots of my buddies are in that unit. Watching this video I have nothing but praise for them considering how little resources and time they have. Really proud of them.
Yeap, in Canada our drill can be very good as you can see here but the uniform is definitely the give away especially when it comes to our reserve units unfortunately. Lack of budget is a big thing. UK has a much bigger army and they have a large pool or retired officers and generals who constantly throw money back into their regiments to buy ceremonial kits. In Canada we just don't have as much of that.
Silent Drill Teams of the US Army, Navy, Airforce, and Marines, that is their Job. Their job is Drill. These Soldiers jobs is to kill the enemy. They are Infantry Soldiers First, Drill Team Second. Also as I satated this is what they do part time, the army that is, and on top of their Infantry Job, they have to train for this. They did an amazing job. Are you in the forces? ~Thanato
***** The "Horse Kick", as you call it, is a display of precision and synchronization. It allows a driller to click their heels together, giving them a perfect attention. I respect that you think it is silly, or "informal", but it is how we do things. I could just as easily say that the stomping is informal and unnecessary, as the American drill teams have displayed, but it is all perspective.
What horse kick are we talking about? A horse kick means you are bringing your foot up behind you (mule kick) when performing a movement which is incorrect......
Fred B. Oh I assumed he was talking about the movement where the driller swings there leg out to the side, which is a practice used by some Honor Guard units in America. The Mule kick is only used by civilian drillers and the Coast Guard, as far as I know
Sorry Im wrong this group is put together for the summer my bad but they are mostly reserves from the Governor General's Foot guards (like US National Guard)
I Grew up in Richmond BC allot of the people who left Hong Kong came here they are very nice people like all Commonwealth countries in my opinion. It must be hard to watch a free Commonwealth country turn into a Communist nightmare especially for a Canadian we take our freedom for advantage allot of the time.
Not true most of them are members of the Governor General's Foot guards; both the Rideau hall and federal parliament building are protected like Windsor castle and have changing of the guards like the Queens guards. But I agree with your comments about drills very good point.
In the beginning he calls the halt on the right foot, isnt it supposed to be on the left? And if mistakenly called on the right, arent you supposed to add a check pace?
Nothing fancy and about 7 hours a day of it. I expect part of the reason is we were a mishmash of pers from various units. My highlight of the entire thing is we were expecting the Queen at 11:00AM (I believe), but about 9:00 we were told the aircraft was early. We were marched out to the tarmac around 10:00.... about 10:10 we were told " if the Queen says she is landing at 11:00, she is landing at 11:00!"...so we waited.
I'm a former CF member, and I have seen both these guys and the USMC Silent Drill Platoon....and alhtough I'm a proud service member of Canada, I have to say, the USMC team is FAR more precise, in cadence and squared away than our guys. Much more impressive. Its time Canada started ensuring the precision of our military and did things to show our discipline and service.
As for the comment about drill is a waste of time, it should be noted that all armies in the world do drill because it teaches soldiers total obedience to orders, alertness to commands, consideration to what others beside you are doing (skills you need in the field) and above all, confidence, leadership and familiarization with methods of instruction in the commander's part. If you think it's a waste of time, it only shows you haven't been taught properly why you have to do it.
well done! way to dance, my dad didn't have the chance to dance he got shot! Still proud of you though because you bring moral up for the Citizens of this great Country called Canada
I know what you mean. PPCLI is a fine regiment, good for you. I moved in 1995, can't say this is the place I wanna stay for good. A messed up place really since the Brits returned its sovereignty to China. I miss the military heritage we have in Canada. Several cadet groups here still retain the British uniform and they do Brits drill with fake SA80 air rifle...just ridiculous.
5 weeks for an honour guard routine seems an aweful lot of time. Did you have some fancy choreography or something? I might be wrong but I didn't think they have really that much more than 5 weeks to prepare for the entire Trooping of the Colour in the UK.
That and not enough time is spent on drill. It is time consuming and combat arms units want to include a cross section of all pers, so tradespeople fight it to the last breath or the last possible moment. I was on the Honour Guard for QE2 at the Moncton Airport in the early 80's and we onl practised for 5 weeks.
Sure, as long as you're not talking about the Silent Drill Platoons. If you simply observe, you will see that, for example, their rifle drill is not synchronized perfectly. It's good, yes, but not perfect, and that is what makes a great drill team. Marking time is also not really that terrific.
Before anyone should make more pointless comparison between these guys and UD drill team, people should know that these guys are an AD HOC unit put together in the summer time only to perform for tourists.
Hey, it's not an attack on the Canadian Forces. I'm just saying compared to other drill teams ( i.e. the Silent Drill Platoons of the United States Armed Forces), they're simply not that impressive. I actually work at the fort at which this performance is being held, and frankly our drill is quite a bit sharper.
@Kelertasable OH! If we are haveing some kind of patriotic title here then the fact these marines fancy themselves as british soldiers kinda says it all to me!! "Dont ya think"
You're right on that. HK has always been a colony so in a way people are use to being docile politically. When the Chinese took over they just got on with it. People have no choice but to do business with the Chinese and put on a superficial sense of Chinese nationalism but privately HK people think of the Chinese very differently as they have no sense of the of the wider world. It's like they think they have done the Olympics they have made it all. Just messed up.
@solomonstemplers, i wouldnt go as far as saying their drill sucked, it was actually pretty good, there were a few mistakes here and there but they really werent all that major like zoning out and forgeting to stomp i mean who hasent done that atleast once, bottom line is it was a good presentation. (btw for all u americans out there u guys do drill weiredly, no offence ;) try stomping... it adds effect and sounds pretty bad ass to be honrst) wow that was alot of typing for a youtube comment eh.
Yeah me too I served in the PPCLI from 94 I wanted to go back but I hate the US and their illegal aggression so its hard for me to re up right now but I might if civi life stays this boring. When did you move to Hong Kong?
@solomonstemplers I merely remarked that they're drill sucked. our drill was always immaculate even tho we were also operational that makes it an educated remark in comparison. If they wanted to be guardsmen then thats what they should have joined these guys are soldiers playing soldiers and doing it badly, they suck get over it.
@solomonstemplers, btw there not marienes canada dosent eaven have a freakin mariene corp, but what we do have first of all is way better drill than u "britts" (come down to parlement hill and watch the changing of the guard, the ggfgs are actually pretty good (as much as i hate to admit it)) all of this drill talk aside another thing that canada has thats better than u is our elite sniper school, weve made the longest kill shot ever takeb 2.2km and on a moving target, (way to ho rob furlong) i
All of you comparing American and Canadian styles of drilling need to remember something: it's all subjective. Whether you think it's necessary to stomp or not it being better is a matter of opinion. Personally I think it's silly and unnecessary since American drilling produces similar sound effects without the need of a stomp. And anyway don't the Royal Marines And Navy use a style of drilling more similar to the American style?
The Navy and Marines use a style of drill used on ships and such, so they dont do it in quite the same style as the Air Force and Army, with the feet and knees 90 degress to the ground and the arms breast pocket high while marching.
The march being played is called "King's Squad" and was written by Richard Waterer.
the one at the end was the quick March of ggfg and the first one was the king's squad
Agreed. We carry arms different too
If you pay attention the scarlet they use for Guards tunics in the UK it's deeper in color so under artificial light you won't see a loght tint of orange as you see here. Well done Lads. I can imagine the many hours of drill for this. Go Canada!!!
I'd love to see the Canadian national drill team when it visits Kingston some day I'm from Kingston

The British uniform is looking awesome!
Honestly speaking: Being in Cadets. Our drill just seems so much easier so simple. The whole lifting your foot off the ground, that nice bang when it comes down just sounds so nice. Who cares who's better... Canada has some things it can be proud of, so people, stop dissing us!
well done guys. looks really good.

Is there another term for “horse kick”? Ive been trying to look it up online
Sorry Im wrong this group is put together for the summer my bad but they are mostly reserves from the Governor General's Foot guards (like US National Guard)
They are actually looking pretty sharp - WTG guys. Great performance!!!
@lkqazwsx we don't have special forces in the navy.... JTF2 and CSOR is open to ALL members of the Canadian Forces regardless of branch.
What? Tf you talking about
@CorkedMagician Those are not marines, Canada does not have marines, but we do have a special forces in the navy
Not true most of them are members of the Governor General's Foot guards; both the Rideau hall and federal parliament building are protected like Windsor castle and have changing of the guards like the Queens guards.
But I agree with your comments about drills very good point.
@angelmarine1292 Thats the point... Canada is a common wealth country. We share the same military values as the british.
i whole heartedly agree
Go Canada!!
Is the Canadian drill the same as the British or is it a derivative?
That was some pretty awesome dill there...looking sharp boys!
In the beginning he calls the halt on the right foot, isnt it supposed to be on the left? And if mistakenly called on the right, arent you supposed to add a check pace?

i love there little hats
@hockeykingfive It's not actually about memory its all about keeping step ("LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT) and it all comes together. :)
I'm a former CF member, and I have seen both these guys and the USMC Silent Drill Platoon....and alhtough I'm a proud service member of Canada, I have to say, the USMC team is FAR more precise, in cadence and squared away than our guys. Amen to that
So that's what's been bothering me. I've always noticed a difference between the Canadian and British Foot Guards but I couldn't quite make it out.
I know what you mean. PPCLI is a fine regiment, good for you. I moved in 1995, can't say this is the place I wanna stay for good. A messed up place really since the Brits returned its sovereignty to China. I miss the military heritage we have in Canada. Yeah, King's Squad!
What about the leg up in front a kilometer? Or the arms swinging?
5 weeks for an honour guard routine seems an aweful lot of time. Did you have some fancy choreography or something? I might be wrong but I didn't think they have really that much more than 5 weeks to prepare for the entire Trooping of the Colour in the UK.

@AsILayDyingOWNS77 why you dissing the Bearskin, ever hear of the Grenadier Guards?.....
What do you mean like a horse? Sorry i know this was like 2 years ago but I'm curious as to what you mean.
Before anyone should make more pointless comparison between these guys and UD drill team, people should know that these guys are an AD HOC unit put together in the summer time only to perform for tourists.

canadia was a part of britain for a while
americans dont even friggin cow kick. they slide they leg back
The Maple Leaf forever 😉
4:00 I wonder how many people didn't expect shots to be fired, even if they aimed their C7's :P
YEAH! And that's why their drill is better! That's all I've said!
@Kelertasable OH! If we are haveing some kind of patriotic title here then the fact these marines fancy themselves as british soldiers kinda says it all to me!! "Dont ya think"
@mathewsmerriman yeah but well see!! Marines drill team is fucking sick though.

@Fisherman56789 arent they terrible to shine
lol imagine if one of them accidently stabbed the other in the ass with the bayonet
I would of loved to hear the drill team commander yell the command " Budget.... Cut!",whereas all the team mutters the term"fucking Liberals"
Liberals have historically increased the budget of the armed forces well the conservatives have decreased it.
Yeah me too I served in the PPCLI from 94 I wanted to go back but I hate the US and their illegal aggression so its hard for me to re up right now but I might if civi life stays this boring. When did you move to Hong Kong?
you could do better drill?
~Thanato
@Kelertasable your entitled to your opinion same as anyone however immature! but that does not differ from the actual fact they're drill still sucks.
@solomonstemplers I merely remarked that they're drill sucked. our drill was always immaculate even tho we were also operational that makes it an educated remark in comparison.

LordWellington15 Navy Drill is so that while on ship they don't fall. On land Navy drill is as per normal drill at least in Canada.
I was a welsh guardsman for three years and have to be completly honest theyre drill SUCKS big time !!
solomonstemplers you must know Adrian Beckett then
@Kelertasable still sucks!!
They're actually pretty lame.
