How To Burnish A Black/Translucent Arkansas Part 2 - Sharpen & Shave

  • I'm using a Black Arkansas stone in this video. I originally thought it was a classification of a translucent but it is not. Both similar but mined from different places and the Black Arkansas stone is a touch finer than the translucent.

    Love the Dan's whetstones. Have a black Arkansas that arrived not quite flat. Some time with the Atoma 400 diamond plate, then a 1000 diamond plate brought it to dead flat. It maintained the reflective surface and does a lovely burnish using a spritz or two of water. Great pair of videos! Thanks. Cheers

    Dude! For my very last shave, I did this exact edge. I had been honing on my arks with water but just wasn't having that much success for some reason. I actually noticed my razors would rust because it was taking so long. It occurred to me that I could hone on oil for as long as I like because it won't bother the steel, so I tried it. I definitely did more than 100 passes but man was that edge sweet! Now I'm gonna put it on all my razors. This edge is in a different tier!

    Personally, I have found that a properly flattened and lapped Black Arkansas stone of high quality gives me the best edges. Very smooth, not aggressive like some synthetic finishers or other natural stones. I use honing oil from Dan’s Whetstones and not Dawn and water mix or plain water. The oil seems to work better for me but the water or water Dawn mix leaves the edge too toothy or aggressive on my straight razor.

    • @drmatt357
      @drmatt357  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luigi Luigi - Good point Luigi. When I do a video of slides, I’ll describe it. But the bottom 1/3 of the pic is the edge of the razor and the rest of the blade is above that. The black section is the table the blade is resting on.

    • @luigiluigi2098
      @luigiluigi2098 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drmatt357 I did wonder if the black was the blade and the light part a slide on the microscope. I eventually figured it.
      I'm confused by the scratch pattern i can see and the dents. What makes the edge smooth the uniform scratch direction and pattern or the crisp edge (defined against black of desk). It's nerdy stuff but since you include it, it would be nice to explain to us noobs. :)
      Love your videos. You and Eric are what got me into honing. And it isn't too hard. Nothing feels more satisfying than shaving with an edge I personally honed.

  • @niftytubeman
    @niftytubeman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you tried corking the edge in contrast to 'killing the edge on a stone'? Your touch might be lighter than mine by a lot so I would cork. Now to look at the burnishing of the ark story.
    Watching the use of a small towel or wash cloth reminds me that the first seven day set a shaver should get is a set of towels. Allow the towel to dry 100% before tossing in the hamper. Mildew and wet towel funk will give ya a rash or worse.

    • @drmatt357
      @drmatt357  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have corked edges and now I've been using a pink eraser but I find that for the finish like after stropping to clean up any dirt on the edge. Killing it on the side of the stone will flatten out any of the chips or toothiness created from lower grits.

  • @gregorywille846
    @gregorywille846 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I may have missed the information but why burnish this stone but not others. All that burnishing can do is to superficially impregnate metal residue in the surface and decrease it so ability in cutting during sharpening. Can you comment?

    • @drmatt357
      @drmatt357  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gregory Wille - These stones are extremely hard. Harder than any other I’ve ever used. If you were to do this to a softer stone, it would pretty much crumble. Because it’s so hard and dense, it doesn’t impregnate with metal. The reason I burnish it to this high level of gloss is for the fine, fine edge it creates. But these stones can be tuned for more of a cutting purpose than polishing. This is for razors, not knives.

      You can tell it’s burnished correctly because it will be mirror like. You will see a clear reflection of your face in the stone.

    So, where did you learn all these lost arts of honing and burnishing? I still gotta check that soap out.

      Johnny Five - watching videos like you're doing, reading the forums and siphoning as much info out of people’s heads as they can tolerate.😏

    I'm totally interested in the soap! I've been a big fan of the Alexandria fragrance scent called Arabian Horse (Herod clone) since I discovered it. I'm pretty sure that's the fragrance base for the soap since I know Alexandria and Sphinx collaborate. Please include me in the soap giveaway! Cheers!

    • @drmatt357
      @drmatt357  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      grishfish - Yes, you are correct! Sphinx is a sister company to Alexandria so same scent oil mix. The soap give away is Alexandria Purple Haze.

      @grishfish 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drmatt357 Gotcha. I thought you were giving away Spartan. Purple Haze is one from AF that I've never put my nose on. It sounds nice though.
      Do you know if the Sphinx shave soaps are rebranded Ariana & Evans soap? I'm pretty sure the Alexandria soaps are, so I'm assuming the Sphinx soaps are as well but the Sphinx site isn't specific about it.

    How bout using Vaseline as a foundation first then on top adding regular shaving gel ? Would it shave better? Smoother? Like butter? Protect the skin and edge of knife?

      That is what they're called and could buy them on Amazon but I can't find them anywhere these days. Too bad because I use them all the time.

    Off topic, have you any experience with the Vermont slate from Griffith? Seems like an extremely reputable company, and I’ve never seen this finishing stone reviewed.

      @@GaZzBenKo - yeah, I’ve always done weights and some cardio 4 days a week. Try and keep my diet somewhat clean. I try and stay away from sugar but it’s always a battle. You may want to get some bloodwork done and get a baseline on your hormones like thyroid and T levels. Also what’s made the biggest difference for me in the past 4 years is Vit D levels. I now get 20 minutes of full body sun (that means at least in johnies only) theee days a week.

      It should be but know that sometimes those Norton flattening stones are not flat.
