I really appreciate your review here my friend. Well done!!! I picked up a Sony A 90K today being Cyber Monday here in the states. I did compare it to the A9S and I agree with your comments on the newer model being an upgrade. I actually think by a lot. I noticed its more user friendly too in my opinion. I have had a Sony 32 inch tv for 13 years. Hasn't missed a beat. 48 inches is gigantic in my fairly small living room and in comparison to my old 32 inch Sony. I am absolutely thrilled. Sounds like Sony has done some additional burn in prevention too which is great. I have been watching Star Trek and football games . Absolutely stunning. The brightness of the TV is very bright to me . I know there are brighter tv's out there but brighter doesn't always mean better. I can't say enough good things about this TV. Sony hit the sweet spot on this one. I will be watching for more of your reviews. Enjoyed your delivery! Joe

Just some additional notes now that I have been using this tv for about a good 3 weeks or so now. I really couldn't ask for more. I have also been watching Bruins hockey games and assorted basketball games. Also some additional content such as the show called "Sliders". I really love how everything looks. It might not be the brightest tv out there but to me it still seems plenty bright and I actually turn it down some. The overall workmanship on this model is amazing. The sound system is way more than what I am used to so I have to say Sony did a wonderful job on the built in sound system in this. I am so glad I bought this television.

Just purchased the 48” version! Absolutely stunning. PS5 is seamless and the VRR makes it all worthwhile. Now I’m going to replace my 65” LG G6 oled with the 65”A95K. My LG has burn in and the ARC no longer works. That was my first & last experience with an LG product. I had several Sony tv’s and never had any reliability issues.

Really like your side-by-side, static image comparison. Frankly, I don’t know why more reviewers don’t do this. It’s a far more effective means of demonstrating brand and model differentiation, so long as viewers have a general understanding of the variables (for example, one or two static images aren’t the whole story either, which of course you don’t claim.)
As for the T.V., it sounds like the optimal choice for a “small” PS5 set up. Very helpful.

  • @FredT1988

Really well done and put together review on the A90k, I also appreciated that you understood the camera can't really showcase the true differences when doing comparisons so commentary is required. Hopefully you can do an LG C2 vs Sony A90k video since 1K vs 1.5K is quite the difference.

    I had C2 and now A90K.Both 42".
    For Content:
-C2 has pitch black blacks and absolutely no blooming whatsoever. Very clean. Negative is that it also has very punchy whites that makes the viewing experience unpleasant in bright scenes.
-A90K offers deep blacks too, but i feel like C2 has a slight edge here, and it has some slight blooming too, but only when watching content, there's no blooming when gaming. But all of this is because Sony offers a much more realistic and balanced picture without the strong contrasts that can be off-putting. Everything is pleasant to the eye with a more organic picture.
    Gaming:
When i played RPG games i didn't notice any difference in input lag. But in fast paced games such as FPS games and Fifa i noticed a slight difference where C2 has the advantage.
Picture quality is the same most of the time. But here the whites are very punchy on C2 while Sony is nicely balanced. White kits in Fifa for example is punching through which im not a fan of.
I stuck with A90K because the whites are just too much on C2. Im willing to make that sacrifice for slightly higher input lag on Fifa.

Sony New Zealand charges NZ$2,499 for the 42' version. Will look to get this TV later this year when decent sales kick in (like NZ$1,800). Needing to upgrade from my 2017 Sony 4k HDMI 1.4 43' TV. I prefer Google OS to LG or especially Samsungs Tizen OS. I have a new custom desktop PC I got Dec 2023 (RTX 4080, i7-14700K, 32GB DDR5, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB M.2 SSD) and I get occasional screen tearing due to the HDMI 1.4 connection and my powerful GPU. HDM 2.1 is the best for native 4k 120hz.

Thanks. I have the Sony 42 A90K. Beside it do a really fantastic picture and have great TV sound. I got it becourse it have 2 x Tvtuner. You can see one program and record another program ad the same time. And IMAX. Put the picture from a 4K player "Gemini man" on the tv with 60hz and turn on IMAX.....wow. Blows you away. And Bravia Core streaming of 4K movies and others. This TV rocks! Sony are just the best out there. And yes, if you have room for a bigger TV, it will be better. But its the best 42 OLED tv out there. Remember, if you use HDMI with a player. You have to turn on high quality image in the settings to get the best picture from HDMI. Its not turn on by default?

Thanks for the very good review! Nice to hear some of the more objective picture quality options as just stats are kinda useless.
I recently bought a 2023 Samsung neo-qled and I hate (!) the picture! Skin tones look poor, a weird very washed out look on several channels, a white balance that seems very blue based, poor control of fast scenes with the built in smoothing, massive over-saturatation of some colours, clipping highlights badly, over sharpening and unrealistic image overall that is harsh on the eyes. Days of playing with the “Expert” picture controls and I still can’t find a mixture of settings that works well for most content, and I don’t fancy playing with the settings every time I want to watch something.
Missing my 10yr old Sony big time, so here I am looking at tv’s again lol.

"Sony introduced its Pixel Refresher called Panel Refresh to curb the burn-in issue, like in the case of its counterparts like LG and Samsung. Sony’s Panel Refresh automatically runs when the TV is off after prolonged use, or you can operate it manually whenever you feel like it"
That sound very strange when Sony also says you should only run the refresher once a year or less..... that is clearly stated on the on screen meny of this TV.
    So why these conflicting messages??

The latter is my current connection and I’ve noticed a slight degradation in the video quality, specially when watching 4k BluRays. I’m not worried about seeing the cables as everything is in a cabinet. My TV: XR48A90K, Receiver: Denon AVR-S760H and has both 4K & 8K capabilities and sounds great. My HDMI cables are all 2.1. Can you specify what picture settings you used to compare the A90K to the older A9S, also if you calibrated these TVs prior to side-by-side? My A9S is SPOT ON reference 2.2 and 2.4 gamma in SDR, so I wuld assume you are side-by-side in Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision DARK is the "reference" if you can call it that, with DV Bright being gamma boosted across the board on my A9S, way above reference luminance. If you tested them side by side in Bright, then you may be seeing some additional artifical gamma bosting applied to the A90K. As to the detail, similarly, if you had engaged Reality Creation, you may be seeing a default artificial sharpening boost to the stock settings side by side. My A9S makes a peak luminance in HDR of around 470nit, or 500nit if you hold the 10% on screen for 10-20 seconds. I honestly cannot tell the difference (maybe SDR can seem brighter due to lower than reference HDR curve?) in SDR at max brightness vs HDR due to the extremely dim maximum luminance possible on the TV.

Edit: On the left it was obvious there were overexposure on the center chest "wing" emblem 14:45. On the right the details of the wing is clear as sky. The a90k is like having the camera's iso bumped up by 1000. In my opinion a9s is the winner.

Yes it is. However, most Sony TVs were definitely made specifically for the PS5 consoles but for the Xbox it’ll still look amazing. Since you said you’ll be watching Movies/Shows while also Gaming, DEFINITELY GET THE A90K you won’t be disappointed. However, if you’re strictly using it for Gaming, get an LG C2 or C3
