I find these types of videos interesting / amusing. I'm a 53 yr old American woman that has been in the fish keeping hobby since I was 10 yrs old. I learned the soda bottle trick to raise brine shrimp 41 yrs ago... 1 ltr bottles weren't common here back then but 2 ltr bottles worked just as good. Good to see that some of these old DIY's are still being employed today to save money in the fish keeping hobby.

When you cut the bottom off, just cut a little bit further down the bottle (about 1cm). Then you can cut that excess off the bottom and make a handle out of that plastic. You can still bolt it on or just superglue it. Can use packing straps or whatever hard plastic is around. That way they won't corrode

I've made myself A DIY also. I use thin wires but my wire dont rust, its aviation grade. Its been amazing, using a 2L Crush soda bottle. And don't make a huge hole for a thin wire, poke a hole and its good enough. For the cap, I drilled a hole just big enough for the air hose and I used silicone to seal it up and made it leak free

I have found, from using the plastic bottles for mini green houses for some of my plant starts, if you place the cut side of your bottle on a hot surface ( I use a small saute pan that I never use to cook with, on my stove to heat it up) the plastic will kind of solidify (and smooth a bit), making it much more sturdier - less flimsy.. you're not really melting it at high heat - just medium heat, while you gently push the bottle down to make good contact. It takes about 30 seconds lol..

So I think I may have a solution to your problem with the wires rusting. I think I heard in a newer video you mentioned that you had stopped using this method because of the rusting wires.
Have you tried sliding the wire inside some tubing (like what you are using with the air pump), and then either melting the end shut or plugging it with a dab of silicone? Just something to keep the water out. Then just feed it through the drilled holes in the bottle as usual. Would probably be a good idea to then wrap the tube encased wire back on itself a bit and maybe secure with a plumbing epoxy or something to keep it from releasing the bottle from the water weight.
Another option that might even be simpler and solves the risk of the tube encased wire letting the bottle slip would be to, instead of using wire, use a thin chain from the hardware store (the thinnest should still be good enough to hold this tiny amount of weight but you can always double check with the clerk). Then run the chain through the tubing, enough to go down through the drilled hole and back up on each side of the bottle (so like two U s, one per side). Allow a chain link or two to stick out of the very end of the tubing. Then use a small carabineer to link the chain ends all together and to then hang from the hooks.
Small chain seems to be pretty cheap and obviously aquarium tubing is cheap, so you are just looking at the cost of the carabineers! If that continued to rust I would buy a small bit of tubing that is very large, large enough to fit over the carabineer you select, then as a last step, slide the big tubing down on one side over the tube encased chain. Secure the chain links to the carabineer and then slide the large tubing up and over the carabineer, ensuring it comes down a little bit on each side over the smaller tubing. Then for a final measure of overkill you could plug up any holes between the large tubing and smaller tubing with a bit of silicone.
Might be total overkill but it's cheap! Just wanted to offer my two cents! Really, really appreciate your videos and all of the work you've done for the hobby thus far. You're a legend!

2:20 -- RE: Marine grade hardware, wire hangers, and Brine -- A thought occurred to me as I was watching and thinking about the problem of rust. It should be possible to find a replacement for the wire "U", perhaps a very stiff plastic or aluminum. And, if that's not cost effective, its also probably possible to find some sacrificial metal to prevent the wire from rusting.
Now, with that being said, I could also anticipate that perhaps having more Zinc interfering with the chemistry in the breeder bottle would be a bad thing, but it also occurs to me that simply having iron and steel in contact with the water will be doing a similar but slightly different thing. Either way, the preferable third option in my mind are very heavy duty plastic "zip ties".

The bonsai wire may not rust, because it's made out of aluminium. That's why it's safe

You have a great idea here however, you didn't say what you were doing while doing with the co2 cap. What was that that you wrapped around the top of the bottle? Is there a particular way to hook up the hoses, I mean are the connections different or the same? What is that thing that looks like a splitter? Why did you put it in your mouth?
You have to understand that Not everyone knows what you're doing and why.
I can't make one of these until I know ALL parts needed and what to do with them.
Can you explain it to me in detail please?

When he was wrapping the neck of the bottle, he had text on the screen saying to wrap Teflon tape (also known as plumbers tape) to help avoid leaks.
Secondly, he said to add airline tubing to both nipples of the cap.
On one of the hoses, he attached a spigot (see 9:12 mark where he shows the bag called "in-line tap"). This is used when he harvests the BBS.
The second airline hose is connected to the air supply. It has a connector that allows you to increase or decrease the airflow depending on your needs.
