That moment replays in my head everytime I close my eyes. Pure and utter heartbreak.
As a Tony fan watching that fight quickly turned into emotional torture...
This would have been my selection. He really looked like a wounded animal and it broke my heart. I was downright sad and scared when they announced his fight with Chandler.
Then Daruish Heel Hooking the life out of Tony was the End 2.0

Some of the narratives in MMA were the secret sauce of why I became an enduring fan and not just a casual phase. That aspect of the sport caught me by surprise, how much there is to learn from it. Same reason we watch movies or listen to songs. MMA is just another art, and art is about what it means to be human. Sometimes silly, sometimes pretty deep stuff.

I knew Tony was aging but I thought he would fight Nate just like he did against Chandler in rd 1 but man that slapped me in the face like a stockton slap... Watching the fight was a nightmare even though it had a finish

@@the_auditor1017 I think it was an accumulation of Chandler's KO, Gaethje's beatdown, Oliveira's domination but most of it was because UFC didn't let Tony recover from his ko loss to Chandler cuz that was a heavy concussion he should have been medically suspended for 6 months and it looked like Tony did not wanna get punched by Nate he was turning around everytime Nate starts letting his hands go

Tony looked like he was underwater in that fight, so stiff and slow. Nate didn't look great either but he at least looked himself because he's never been the most athletic fighter. Tony though was an absolute shell of his former self, a far cry from his prime years where he was so fast and explosive he was easily one of the best Lightweights in the division.

It's unfortunate that BJ Penn's career dive took place during the start of the new era for the sport when it was growing and becoming more popular to a wider audience. Most of the comments are about Tony because he's more recent but watching BJ Penn destroy his legacy in a time span on 9 years was freaking brutal. It was a long drawn out, slow death. It happened at the worst time because now that is what most fans remember is him getting his ass kicked constantly but there was a time he was one of the most respected and scariest dudes in MMA.
The video of him being knocked out by a regular drunk guy was brutal. His fall from grace was hard to watch.
He will always be one of my personal GOATs. His championship lightweight run was most impressive and his earlier career was legendary.. His fall from grace and losing streak at the end was tough to see
I became an MMA fan right before Penn's fall from grace so that's what I remember personally seeing, but I don't think you have to worry about people Ike me thinking he's a bum. I may not have seen what he did for myself but "BJ Penn" is one of those names that's spoken with such obvious revenance that I realize he must have been pretty damn good at one point.

Seeing Tony in the Nate fight was insane. I think he still has effects from that Chandler ko.. it wasn't even 5 months. He kept turning his back to Nate and alot of his technique was Gone. Sad. Hope he stops.
MMA on Point is always knocking Forest Griffin. Not in a "haha look at the loser" way but more like a "You're really sweet, but I already have a boyfriend" kinda way. The guy retired 19-7 with wins over Ortiz, Franklin, Rua and Jackson, was a champion, is a great ambassador of the sport and seems like a really nice dude.
Forrest Griffin is a legend of the sport and has two rightful spots in the UFC Hall of Fame.

The Gaethje fight was the end of Tony Ferguson’s reign as a contender, the Chandler KO and Diaz submission was just to cement the end of his career
And the worst part is Tony doesn't seem to understand that its time to retire. He flat-out refuses to retire, and this will inevitably result in more and more losses.
Looking at it in retrospect, he probably could've won that Gaethje fight if he'd chosen to grapple. Why he chose to stand and bang after the 2nd round when he was clearly losing the striking exchanges I'll never know.

@@SamuraiSilverhand I think his UFC contract will end before that happens. Assuming he loses all his next fights to end his contract, the UFC will not resign him at which point it'll be either retirement or competing in lesser leagues.

People don’t get it. This is a sport that’s fully based on momentum. You fight long enough and eventually you’ll decline and take a loss no matter how great you are. People shit on Khabib, but they really do that because they wanted to see him lose. Too many guys are long overdue to retire and fight just because of either money or their ego not wanting them to let go.

Thought Cain Velasquez and JDS would be on the list. Their falls were surreal given both looked unstoppable in their prime.
The trilogy match where JDS had his jaw broken in round 1 and continued to fight to the decision eating bombs the whole time was one of the craziest fights I had ever seen at the time. Still up there as one of the toughest displays of a champion level fighter

The sheer amount of damage JDS took in those fights, and how close together they were, had me not shocked he didn't look as good afterward
I think Johnny's issue was the banning of IVs when USADA came in. It would explain his frequently missed weight cuts and why he seemed lethargic in his fights.
Also he bought himself a Texas BBQ restaurant and ate there all the time.

He had a great career, at this point he's taking damage for no reason. He should call it a day and enjoy what he has accomplished. If he continue fighting I wish him the best but just such unnecessary damage at this point
To all people who thinks that GSP supposed to lose against Johny Hendricks, remember that he refused to do a drug test compared to GSP so still props to him. He bravely fought someone juiced up as he was accustomed to.
GSP ended his career on a high. Whereas Hendricks just faded away.
Hendricks deflated as soon as USADA came around.
GSP was likely juiced as well, but he got away with it so he gets all the benefit of the doubt.

Championship Run Lawler beat people up so bad that he altered a lot of fighters' careers.
Ellenberger, Hendricks, MacDonald and Condit were never the same after him.
Lawler and Wanderlei Silva are 2 of my all time favourite fighters. Absolute mayhem and guaranteed total violence from bell to bell every fight.
I don't think he was the same after the Macdonald and Condit fights either. People might put it down to the knee injury and Woodley knockout, but those 5-round wars + age will wear down a dude.

This was a bitter sweet episode to watch; so many great fighters who meant so much to me who gave me so much enjoyment it’s hard to see them end their careers like this but also it’s nice to look back the great fights and their accomplishments; the only appropriate thing to say is thank you for the memories guys wish I could shake all of their hands and tell them that

Its cause every time he gets two wins he drops a fight. His best run was in 2015 but since then the guy he hasn't been able to crack another 4 fight win streak which is something you need in a top heavy division like welterweight to get a crack the belt unless you're a huge draw

Johny was my guy. He made me happy to be an MMA fan. I was always nervous to see him fight. Got to meet him in his barenuckle fight and he was a genuine, really nice guy despite what other people think or say. Nothing like the sport of MMA. I'll always love the sport of MMA but I've never felt the same as I did everytime Hendricks fought. Great times!!!

I was fortunate enough to be there in person to see one of the last dominating performances and title defense by BJ Penn when he beat Diego Sanchez badly. I've been to many events and seen countless greats fight live but I can honestly say that I've never experienced a fighter entrance like BJ Penn. When that Hawaiian music hits the crowd goes nuts and you know you are witnessing a special fighter.

I will never forget that fight between Tony and Justin.. honestly I didnt know it was his decline until he fought Charles and got dominated, thats when I knew. To say I was bummed that Tony never fought Khabib is an understatement and im sure most of us El Cucuy fans will agree. Still, that man deserves all of the respect in the world. He fought anyone, whenever. He wouldnt sit there and wait for Khabib because he believed in himself and for that he is a legend. Love you Tony, 805 forever dogg

When Tony faced Justin was when I truly felt like it was the beginning of the end for him. I could only imagine how demoralizing that loss was for him. It was really hard to watch. Sorta made me bitter towards Justin because he could’ve finished the fight multiple times but chose to keep it standing and just continued to dismantle an already battered Tony in front of the world. Insane amount of heart Tony has. Thanks for all the classics champ #CSO
Tony Ferguson has been my biggest Inspiration since his fight against Pettis, had a knee surgery and fought after just 4-6 weeks and in the very first moment Pettis tried to smash that knee and Tony blood all over his face as usual still made Pettis Quit his corner had to call it off in the 2nd round I think Pettis broke his wrist or something but yeah...I was very weak and feeble ppl called me a hangar and struggled to have confidence to go to the gym but I went on Monday ever since thanks to Tony, God bless him and have become Strong now and just want to see him go out on a Win he deserve it 🙏

Anderson Silva should have been on this list, with one or both of the weidman fights being when we knew the dream was over for him.
I think I was still holding out hope for Anderson until the Cannonier fight but, yeah, he should have been here.
I feel like you could put 100 fighters on the list... I think rather what this list is alluding to is the fighters that had the dream to become GOATS but couldn't because of aging? IDK but that's what it seems to me.
I think it was the second Weidman fight. The first you could argue that it was a fluke win; Silva was screwing around and got caught. Seeing him break his leg like that in the second bout convinced me it was over. That kind of leg break is tough for anyone to come back from but it becomes even more difficult when you're in your late 30s.
@@BiggieTrismegistus You have to give Weidman credit though because he was winning both fights against Silva before they ended. It wasn't like Silva was having his way and then he got unlucky, Weidman was putting it on him especially in the rematch when he almost KO'd Silva again albeit in the first round.

Tony deserves all the respect of the killer he was at his peak. All the same, he ain't out there like he used to be...
I feel like a lot of us knew after the Gaethje fight he was done. For me his fight with Charles solidified that he was never going to make a full recovery out of getting another win. The division at both LW and WW is too stacked and moving too fast for him to ever get another W. I think even guys like Miller or Guida will give Tony problems.

God I wish I was around for Tony's run I became a fan a few months before his fight against Dariush and I learned he was from Michigan and that he was a big 10th planet guy after I started training we have a photo of him in the locker room holding up the belt after his win over Kevin Lee in 2017 for the interim title guy is so inspirational but I hate to see what's happening to him

Tony suffered the perfect storm of mistakes/circumstances. The guy cut weight twice in a VERY short amount of time and it really took it out of him. He was slow, his timing was off...he didn't look anything like he had always been. He then took a career destroying amount of damage from Justin.....it was absolutely brutal. That was it for him....he tried to shake it off and pretend it didn't happen and rushed back too early and has just sustained more damage. That last fight with Nate was humiliating....Tony looked terrified of getting hit, he was terrified to engage.....and that just isn't Tony.
Fuck man I know, I wish more than anything that he just played the businessman and waited for Khabib. Just once don't be the samurai, play it safe, and defy destiny and it's plan to stop that fight. But he's Tony. He lived up to his crazy energy. Fuck man he could have lost against Khabib but who cares, that's the fight we all wanted. I still think his style would have been Khabib's biggest challenge too

I've never even set foot in he professional arena/ring and I knew it was too late for me. No money or any backing/help at all in my 20's and only recently got a job opportunity in my 30's, I'll probably just pass that dream to the next generation.
Matt Hughes fought Gracie during his second title run. I remember that fight streak when Matt Hughes was thought to be the Pound for Pound best in the world. He beat Frank Trigg 2(first fight to be introduced into the Hall of Fame), crushed Gracie, and then beat BJ Penn. He seemed unbeatable at the time.

Honestly. Look at boxing. People love to hate on Garcia, but not only did he make millions, basically ended on a solid note and now have tons of opportunities to go into other things, but he can happily look away knowing he’s in a way better position when he first started. Legacy is great and all, but a lot of these fighters mainly want to provide for their family and/or have the freedom to branch out once the hunger isn’t there anymore.

Of all the champions I think BJ Penn has fallen the furthest. From being considered one of the best in the world in a weight class to getting knocked out by some fat guy in front of a bar. That was like gut wrenching to watch.
For me, Tony's end was vs Olivera... For Gaethje i thought it was the double weight cut, he will come back, but seeing him getting dominated by Olivera... Yeah thats when I knew he is gone...
The fact he took so much damage in the Gaethje fight led me to believe he will not comeback the same. Especially since he didn't give his brain nearly enough time to recover by the time he returned to action against Oliveira. He should have waited a full year before returning at least.

Tony's rushing himself to comeback was actually his downfall, he's known for taking fights on short noticed after taking massive shots but mf still tried to pull something out of his pocket. respect to Tony, but I just can't imagine going out there immediately after such a beatdown. that's the exact reason why Holloway and Diaz kept their fortitude throughout their careers because everytime they're getting battered badly, they are taking a long break.

I always imagine, what would’ve been if there was more time after tony landed his uppercut on gaethje. After that it was brutal for tony. If there were an extra 15 seconds Tony’s story could’ve been much more different….
