- German Shepherds are pretty recognizable. Even if you’ve never owned a German Shepherd, you probably know exactly what they look like. However, the black German Shepherd is much less well-known. This coloration is extremely rare and not currently recognized by most major kennel clubs.
Currently, the German Shepherd as a whole is recognized as the 2nd most popular dog in the United States according to the AKC. They declined somewhat after WWII due to their affiliation with Germany. But they have since grown significantly in popularity.
Usually, German Shepherds have a single coat pattern - black and tan. However, fully black German Shepherds do exist. This is not due to crossbreeding; the gene for completely black coats is carried by purebred German Shepherds. It is much rarer than the usual coloration, though. They are highly sought after and expensive, despite the fact that they can’t compete in dog shows.

I have a black male GSD. I got him at 8 weeks and he just turned 18 months. He is a beautiful dog and gets compliments whenever we are on a walk or go to the pet store. He is 26' high and weighs 92 pounds. He is my 3rd GSD but my first black one. He is very loving and protective. He is also very energetic and oh so intelligent. GSD's are hands down the best dog on the planet.

Awesome video, thank you! Black GSD's are so beautiful. I have a black 9 month old male GSD, he is already 80 lbs and 26 inches tall. I rarely see other black GSD's but lots of Sable working lines which are also gorgeous.

I have 2 black German Shepherds. One is a Czech working linelong hair and the the other is an American working line. They are wonderful girls. The black GSD I lost last year was a 90 lb female who stood 27 inches. They are amazing.
Very sorry to hear about losing your black female GSD, she sure was an impressive size! I lost my black male GSD last year, he was 29 inches tall and 115 lbs. I miss him so much, as I know you miss your girl. Your female puppies sounds amazing, have fun with them!

It's a shame that modern GSDs are allowed to have sloping backs, Von Stephanitz would have been horrified.
My dogs father is a saddle back and has a straight back..my pup is solid black with a little brown on his paw

I juat purchased my 1st black GSD! He is from a litter of 6 , Dad is from W German line and mom from East German line and both are Snoozin #3. I should be getting him in about mid Aug. I am so excited. Especially after i juat had to put down my 14 week old Black and Tan GSD pup. So sad. He was from a Serbia working line. He was a little over 14 weeks and 32lbs! He was going to be a huge boy. Unfortunately he developed seizures in which got worse and worse and worse and meds would not help. Very sad but excited to get my beautiful Black GSD pup!

No mention about their memory capacity. Mine once found a slice of pizza at the park. The next two weeks that was the first spot he'd check. If we don't finish walking the perimeter of the park we start where we left off next visit. He never repeats the same streets on our walks. We always change our route. Yes he can be stubborn. If he wants to change streets he will stop and wait for me to change direction. Sometimes I give in if I'm to tired to say no.

@@freddie3206 mine weighs a hundred pounds . He's more gentle on leash compared to my brothers Chihuahua. At five years old I retrained him for my service dog. He grew up around cattle. You can teach an old dog new tricks. Reason for his job change my right foot was amputated. We spent two months figuring out his new job. He adapted very quickly. His name is Fred. I used to have a Barney. Six years age difference. Fred was maybe two months old. A roadside stray. December 26 is our eleventh anniversary. I couldn't be there last year. We were separated three and a half months. Last September I was run over in a crosswalk. During that time I had my brother put him on the phone. Since then Fred hates being separated from me. It stresses him out. He hates busy intersections still. About two weeks ago we finally walked that area. He still remembers what happened. As long were together he's okay. I'm just glad he wasn't harmed or taken from me. I almost died from the trauma. We back to our old routine. I'm still healing from the incident. My first day out I took him for a small walk. He keeps me going. Never a dull moment. A shepherd is a blessing !

I have a Czech Solid Black working line breed she's a big girl. Very intelligent and beautiful and always ready to work . They don't have any different health issues than other GSD,s

is the black German prone to more diseases or at higher risk than other large dogs or GSD? am looking at a black puppy now, both parents are cleared from typical health issues... but what to consider as potential issues ? am also looking at a cane Corso and pitbull puppy....

Working lines have black GSDs, show lines rarely have them. And working lines don’t have the same kind of angulation as show lines does. Do your fucking research.

@@neamm1.k I am on my 6th one. The German Shepherd I have now is black and he is a longhaired dog. He is huge. He weighs 120 pounds of pure power. I agree with you. The color of the dog has nothing to do with the temperament or the structure. My German Shepherds were all American show line and they all had the straight back except for 1. He was anugulated The slope back and he was as healthy as all the rest. I do seem to think the all black German Shepherds seem to be larger than the two tone black and tan. Every black GSD I have seen on YT all seem to be larger than the black and tan including my all black GSD. He is the biggest GSD I have had or seen.
That's cool I'm still learning..about my black gsd I know his dad is from west German line. And his mother is s smaller black dog but she is a savage..I'm still taking in anything I can learn. Thank you bro.
If you are looking for a black GSD...look for it from the breeders in Poland . Looking for one to be shipped to the US. There are great places where you can get healthy dog back there. Spent a lot of time to research .....cheers.
