@@CelticMorning I get the meaning. It was only in jest. She asked a rhetorical question and I gave a rhetorical answer. I couldn't help but point out the humour in that statement. They are lovely looking Borders I agree.
A native Californian, I've only seen one once. But at that one meeting I was struck by how compact and beautifully balanced that Border was and now want one.
It's a good description. Couple that with their beautiful temperament and fun ways they are a fine dog to have. Everything this guy says is pretty much true on my own experience.
Our 3rd & current Border Terrier was bred by Mike & his sweet wife Jan. We can never thank them enough. She is the sweetest border we have owned & is delightful with other dogs. We are very proud owners. She's a devil for hunting though. Never underestimate a Border Terriers prey drive. It's always there.😊
I live in Northumberland where the breed hails from and I'm the proud owner of a male Border Terrier called Alfie and I used to have a female Border Terrier called Bex who sadly passed on a couple of years ago. I can't say enough about the breed, I would highly recommend a Border Terrier to anyone and if you're prepared to give them a warm, loving home they'll repay you with loyalty, friendship and respect. Great video as well 👍
You have described the behaviour of my Border, Ellie, perfectly. We adopted her as a rescue dog (her owners couldn't cope?) nearly four years ago and she has been an absolute joy. I cannot imagine being without her. As you say, you do need to understand that they will run if distracted and off the lead but other than this this she has been a wonderful companion.
My Border Terrier Emma recently passed away at the age of 13. The best dog ever. Full of energy, love. Long story short: the best breed ever

I had a cross terrier... black and tanned.. I've just had to put him to sleep.. he was about 15 or 16 years old... he was the best dog I've ever had... I don't think I'll get a dog like mine again... he was really a super pooch.. I'll miss him dearly. .
I am the proud owner of a beautiful border terrier who strayed into me , clearly abused, bad eye and ear . He is an absolutely beautiful dog , so timid and so loving . My niece who is now nine has grown up with him and she was cuddled him and lied beside him and all he has ever done is shown affection to her . Sadly a member of my family passed away leaving a mini Yorkie behind , which I now have taken in and he took to him straight away , they love each other . Mickey has a heart condition and I am dreading the day he leaves me , he is the love of my life x
We adopted a dog and everyone says she looks like a Border Terrier. Her Mom is a Wheaton Terrier, but we don't know her Dad, her face looks exactly like a Border Terrier. After watching this I am thrilled, she has so many of the traits that you described. We are madly in love with her and she is lovely.
We believe our rescue dog is a border terrier, based on her look and behavior. When you mentioned the jaw jutting out I laughed - she has a VERY distinctive underbite (as we say in the USA)! This dog is extremely smart, energetic, sweet, playful and loyal. We are very lucky to have her 🥰
Brilliant dogs. My Flora LOVES her toys and I play for hours with her and her toys. She gets all excited when She gets a new one. She has never destroyed a toy. She is the best wee dog ever. She has had tummy issues and only eats when she feels like it.
Just lost my best boy Rocky 3 weeks ago at age 14 1/2. Perfect health until April 2021... Started having seizures. Otherwise totally healthy, lovable, friendly, .... Miss his sweet furry puppy face. Hoping that someday I can get another, although I am torn between that and getting a rescue pitbull, there are so many good dogs out there that need a home
My first dog was a Border Terrier. I was surprised that he never showed any interest in the squirrels that passed through our yard, but a couple times on trips we came across some wild rabbits and, although he stayed calm and with me, he perked right up and gave them all his attention! I can also confirm that he didn't really want to "fetch." If you threw a toy for him he would bring it back, and he'd drop it if you told him to, but he'd really much rather you try to take it from him in a game of "keep away" or "tug of war."
We've just gone from a 16 and a half year old Jack Russell (passed away 4 months ago), to a border terrier. We absolutely love the new dog, such a different personality.
Great informative video. Lovely clips of the dogs. I’m hoping to bring home my first BT in a couple of months so am lapping up every video I can find. This is by far the best.
Thanks for video, we have always had Jack Russell's in the past. We decided to have a change and get a Border Terrier (or two) which we have, two girls. They are three months old at the moment and are are lovely and mad as you would expect. We are getting on a bit and they make sure that we are tired at bed time, no ifs or buts they are great for making sure that you sleep at night as they run us ragged, great terriers.
I am making enquiries now with border terrier breeders in Ontario. My vet says he has none in the practice currently but did say they are intelligent active and loyal. A lovely breed he says. This is helpful...thank you.
Thank you for this video as we are looking to get one and this was all the info we needed, had a Bedlington whippet and he was awesome but for our new family member we wanted something with a similar temperament but smaller, thanks again 👍🏻
Hello Mike, I’m looking for the perfect dog breed for me & my daughter and was 90% set on a border terrier. After watching this wonderfully, informative video I am now 100% set on having one as part of our family. Throughly enjoyed this, you make a brilliant presenter. Regards from Dublin.
I have a pure border called chester he's 9 now this breed by far is one of the most loving! He's a great companion and I've never had any problems with him!
We adopted a 7 year old and have two adult cats. I watched this video right when we adopted Cooper and I was scared. Our male cat smacked Cooper on the nose day one and that was it, he was fine with him from that moment on. He chased our female cat for about 4 months, because she was scared and would run. When she became confident, Cooper completely ignored her and now we are all one big happy family. From this video, I thought it would never happen but I guess we beat the odds.
We bought our dog Stan from the Hollingsbee’s nearly 13 years ago and he’s still as fit as a fiddle and the most placid tolerant dog. Can’t imagine owning another breed. Pretty sure Sam featured in this video is his sire.
I have two Borders. They're uncle and nephew and adore each other but are chalk and cheese. I love the fact that they're not a fancy breed and are lots of fun and have immense personality. I love em!!
Informative and funny! Came here to see a bit of border terries since ours passed away about a year ago. He had a lovely personality and had all the typical traits you described, especially the appetite! One time I hade gone out of the kitchen for a moment and somehow he got onto the dinner table and ate a whole stack of around 20 pancakes and a full package of butter😋
I have two boys that I am looking 4 them a 4evr home. They r border/Boston Terrier. Fawn /reddish blonde... they r great little gentlemen. Gary is very loving and wants to be the best he knows. Very smart and he is very vocal when he's hungry or I was gone for to long from home. Lol he tells me all about what his brothers and mom did while I was gone. Wonderful breed and perfect size.
All 3 of my BTs accepted cats. The first was 10. She accepted 3 cats into her pack! They would curl up together. My first two were great eaters but the third has always been digestively challenged, so getting her to eat is always interesting.
I had a borderterrier for 17 years. Best companion and friend ive ever had and i will always miss him dearly. Great hunting dog we used him to hunt moose and deer. when he was 12 he hurt himself and we retired him, but he lived a happy healthy life for 5 more years after that. also had a border terrier whose life got cut short after 5 years due to an traffic accident. he had abit more aggressive manor but was a great dog still. but same things applie to him. I agree with almost everything here but the eating.. I dont know if it was because we spoiled them from time to time with good food, but we could always have a bowl of dogfood and they would only eat if they were hungry.. but they were both really good at sitting at the table wanting our food. which they rarley got I may say, but when they did get a slice it was the best. I want to add i grew up with the one of 17 years and had him from age 11-28.. He was a great friend
I had three odd looking pups show up at my property one morning . they were friendly but kept their distance. one of them stood out to me because of his color and he looked so happy to be alive. I had to go to work and I wasn't in the market for another dog [responsibility] when I got home, they had went on and I was relieved. after several days past I was out in the yard and heard a horribly sad wail coming from a dog. I walked out into the woods to investigate and it was the dog that had caught my eye. there were no signs of his two siblings. as soon as he seen me he bolted into the woods. I started leaving food close to where he had been laying when I saw him. for the first few days he hadn't eaten any food. but I could hear him wailing off out in the woods somewhere. this is turning into a book so I'll cut it short. he finally started taking the food and the wailing stopped after a week of non stop. after weeks of feeding him he began to come up to the house but he wouldn't let anyone touch him. it was 3 months before he one day trotted past me and stopped ,rolled over and allowed me to pat him on the side. I suspected that someone had shot his siblings and tried to shoot him as well. he quickly stole my heart and became a family member. I later discovered from our vet that he looked like a border terrier except that he has a curve in his tail. he is a mix. he is unlike any dog we've ever had. Oh yes, his name is BOO because he was afraid of his own shadow when he first arrived here.
Y'all border terriers are different than mine. Mine was from a shelter but looks just like a border terrier except slightly more wirey around his face and an underbite. Never as excited as these, never made a sound in his life even when we brought in other dogs who liked to bark. He'd greet you by bringing you a stuffed animal. Didn't like cuddles but he'd tolerate it with children. He spent his days patrolling the house to keep the rats away. We didn't really have many rats but this dog 100% was devoted to his job. Wish I could find another like him.
Great video, thanks 👍. I will get a Border when i retire in 5 years time. I prefer the dark colour, like the one in this video, I've heard that the dark colour fades after 2 to 3 years though.
I have had three over the years Basil..Oswald and now Alfred. Wonderful dogs. So intelligent and seem to know exactly what's going on ...where we are going...when we have reached their favourite place etc. Have also learnt that you cannot pull the wool over their eyes...or tell them off !
Thank you for your lovely video! Border terriers are very close to my heart having grown up with two myself and have always loved dogs but this breed particularly. I’ve just been over the The Border Terrier Welfare website- thanks for mentioning that and really enjoyed reading about the amazing work that you guys are doing. Can I ask, now I have my own home and a family, I have been wanting to get a border terrier again as the last 5/6years have been the longest I have gone without a border companion and we as a family are at a stage where we are ready for a dog to complete our lives and make our house a home if you will. Please can you advise, seeing and reading the work you do with this beautiful breed- Where would be the best place you would advise to look for getting a pup?! Thanks in advance! 🙏🏻
Yup, easy to train mine, like you said they can be stubborn and not do it the next day. Same with fetching, unless she's in the mood then she'll simply chase after the ball, pick it up, shake it, and then drop it instead of bringing it back. But all in all, she's a happy little thing, trying to get her used to other dogs when out walking
I am trying to find the breed to my dog. I lived in a trailer home full of dogs with no home. This particular one caught my attention out of all the bunch I fed and he seemed abused bc he wouldn’t come near and was very jumpy. I moved and he knew I was leaving and jumped into my car. Literally jumped I was so teary the first time I left bc I was broken bc I didn’t know if anyone owned him and I wouldn’t want to take him away but second time I came back he hopped on and didn’t want me to leave without him. Anywho I tried finding his breed and this is the most accurate. Brought me so much joy to have a name as to what he is. Sad to see so many people are adopting bc why would anyone have left these awesome dogs in the first place!! He definitely does get distracted and RUNS but he always come back. I feel he has so many gestures that are human like !! He totally understands me and it shocks me how well behaved he is and how much love he gives. If you are thinking of owning one. Definitely do it
That eating part doesn’t apply to my border terrier who eats just the sufficient amount needed for him to be full. That being said, all the other things mentioned pretty much apply to him. Cheers for a great video!
We got our Charlie at 6 months old because his jaw was a bit undershot. Glad for the "defect" because his breeder couldn't show him! He's six now. Best dog ever. Of course this is coming off of having a JRT for 17 years - naughty!
My wife has always had borders in Newcastle, we are now living in Dubai and looking to get a border. Would they be okay in the hotter climate? I'm concerned the coat might not be suitable in a hot climate
I have never owned a dog but love the look of these. Are they suitable as a first dog and if so would it be better to get a pup or an older dog?As I am out at work all day he would be on his own which concerns me as I want to do what’s best for the dog
I am on my second pair of Border Terriers and absolutely love the breed. They are extremely sociable little characters (with people, not necessarily other animals). I DO NOT recommend leaving this breed (or most other breeds) "on their own" all day every day. The dog would be lonely and frustrated. If you can't be home a fair amount, or take the dog to daycare regularly, I recommend getting a cat.
Im thinking of buying one from a reputable breeder. I read these dont shed if so very little or not noticeable? If I get a puppy 9 weeks old for example when do I start handstripping? Are they good dogs with 6 and 3 year old children or can be snappy towards them?
My border terriers were totally obedient, providing I was doing what they wanted. In old-age they lost most of their sight and hearing but could hear a crumb break and catch it before it hit the floor despite appearing to be asleep.
Agree with virtually everything you said i have 2 now and previously had a litter broth and sister fit as lops though i have found that they sometimes get poorly stomachs. Your dogs look grand and most important happy congratulations
My border terrier passed away around 18 years old. We found him as a stray and had him for 16 years and assumed he was around 2-3. He was a strong athletic dog that would constantly kill racoons and foxes that killed our chickens. Only problem was that he wasn't really protecting them... He just wanted them for himself and would eat one every few weeks.
They will, easily if you have them as pups, and they grow up with them. I used to have a smallholding with chickens, geese, and sheep. Never any problems with my two Borders.
Excellent video really educational. Possibly made me decide the breeds maybe not right for me but thats also a good thing as it shows I’m maybe not right for the breed. Thank you 👍🏻

I have had three over the years
Basil..Oswald and now Alfred. Wonderful dogs. So intelligent and seem to know exactly what's going on ...where we are going...when we have reached their favourite place etc. Have also learnt that you cannot pull the wool over their eyes...or tell them off !
can you leave them alone in the home for up to 4-6 hours?
And my wee Border is currently lying beside me on the sofa, snoring 😂
Excellent explanation in this video sir very much enjoyed listening
Definitely do it
good honest review, i like the man.
Your "dog breed videos" are the best! Could you make more? :D
We love our Border! The greatest dogs in the world.
Great little dog with a magnificent nature.
Describes my Luna exactly. Love Borders. Thanks for sharing.
That eating part doesn’t apply to my border terrier who eats just the sufficient amount needed for him to be full. That being said, all the other things mentioned pretty much apply to him. Cheers for a great video!
Just rescued one. He crossed with yorki so lovely
Would you like to share a pic with us?
Very informative video - thanks. We've had Dexter for 7 years and got him after relatives had their Border, Jack. They are lovely little dogs
I love when pairs get adopted together! That's so sweet that their new owners didn't separate them 😊 4:31
Is Border Terrier suitable for temperate country like Singapore,?
Would you recommend getting them neutered or spayed as I have read it affects their coat and can no longer be hand stripped.
You're right...Borders are the best breed in the world!
Agreed, the best breed period!
What a wonderful video! Great informative content and very well put together. Where did you get your wonderful dog ornaments from?
The dog ornaments used to be mostly made by border fine arts & are quite hard to find now which makes them quite expensive
How are border terriers with strangers when they come to your house? Do they bark or are happy
We have two and heir behaviour fits yours exactly. wonderful little dogs.
I agree! Love my border!
Will they make good hunting dogs like squirrel dogs hunt squirrels
I have four and a half year old border terrier the most loving dog l have ever had
I had a border terrier named Darwin hes dead now but i still love him #ripDarwin
I just lost mine last week his name was Sam. Best dog in whole 🌎
@@bojanglesjacksonthe3rd805 sad man, sad.
Best breed ever.
Im thinking of buying one from a reputable breeder. I read these dont shed if so very little or not noticeable? If I get a puppy 9 weeks old for example when do I start handstripping?
Are they good dogs with 6 and 3 year old children or can be snappy towards them?
Wonderful video thank you!
My border terriers were totally obedient, providing I was doing what they wanted. In old-age they lost most of their sight and hearing but could hear a crumb break and catch it before it hit the floor despite appearing to be asleep.
Wheaten....very rare but I've seen one! Mike is a good friend of mine....
Indeed the best breed in the world
Great video I’ve got 6 of them
Nicely put together and down to earth video.
Greetings from Germany! This is Pelle!
I am considering one...this is great info.
Glad it was helpful!
I think there is Wheaten B.T . In Woodley Berkshire . A very pale creamy brown with dark grizzle back .
Great video I have a border x bedlington what i rescued from a puppy farm she is a fantastic dog
Thanks.. a lot of useful information - well done!
Will border Terriers adabt to life with chikens and lambs etc? Or is it to much of an uphill battle
They will, easily if you have them as pups, and they grow up with them. I used to have a smallholding with chickens, geese, and sheep. Never any problems with my two Borders.
I love my border girl. Adopted from my grandparents (grandma not alive. Grandpa in nursey home) they are stubborn but sweet little buggers. 😄
My Joey is amazing! Wonder if it’s because he is not neutered, but he has a gorgeous mane which i have left to grow.
Fabulous dog
Very good film and a very good breed of dog.
I have a boder.terrier he's called Buster he's never bit and he's so nice
Ava Bolton our Border boy is also called Buster too haha. He’s such a character and is just gorgeous natured ;)
Same I have one named buster
Great little dogs, I love them 👍
I have just lost my Lakeland and want a border where can I get one, I live in the south lakes
Excellent video really educational. Possibly made me decide the breeds maybe not right for me but thats also a good thing as it shows I’m maybe not right for the breed. Thank you 👍🏻
