I used to work at a cellphone store, and had a guy come in two minutes before closing to set up cell phone service. He wanted to transfer his number from one provider to another which can take upwards of 45 minutes depending on their current service provider. I told him that it would be best to come back the next day because of how long the process would take, and explained that I had an appointment right after work I couldn't afford to miss. Needless to say he was upset and cussed me out. I love how as customer service workers we are always expected to respect the customer's time, but they almost never respect the service worker's time, or understand that we have lives outside of our working hours. The audacity and entitlement of some people is just astonishing these days.

That lady trying to get in the door at one minute to close. A lot of small businesses like that one only pay an extra half hour to do the closing tasks after the door is locked. If you stay later than that, you won't get paid. Illegal? Yes. Do the owners face consequences? Not as much as you think.
Even at stores where you get paid the entire time you are there. If you stay over to help a last minute entitled customer like that, the store will write you up for working over scheduled hours - even if the manager on duty is the one who let them in at one minute close. It happens a lot.
So, either way, entitled customers like that will end up causing the employee to lose pay at the least, and their jobs at worst.

This depends where you are... I'm in Canada, they legally have to pay us here. However, is it still ignorant, and do we get in trouble from owners/companies for doing the overtime? Yes. We do. Hence, the 15 or 30 mins we have scheduled for after the closing of the stores to shut everything down.

I own my small mailing store and I don't have any employees. It's just me running it all the time. One lady called me and my store useless because I'm not open outside of 9 to 5 hours. That one stung because I work so hard and literally dedicate 1/3 of my life (usually more) to making it a nice business.

I’ve never been more thankful for working for a large company. At my job, if you stay past your 8 hours scheduled, you automatically get paid OT (1.5x your normal pay), so if I’m scheduled off at 7 and stay an hour late to help finish up, I get compensated in overtime pay. It honestly makes me lose hope in society that there are people who are forced to stay late and don’t get compensation for however long they have to stay, and then getting in trouble by the boss for cutting in to your personal time to help the business?? Baffles my brain.

@@arieslexicon7988 When it's a situation like that, if the small business also doesn't have weekend hours, I wonder who their clients are.
No shame to you, because I have been a small business owner/operator, but when most of your market is people who have "regular work hours", only being open for those times is frustrating. I can't use your services if I can't get to you, unless you try to have services that allow me to get there - internet access, drop off/pick up in off hours, weekend hours, appointments, ... something.
I watch so many small businesses go under because the owner/operators don't factor the time involved, along with the stress. It's hard.
If you're only using 1/3 of your day trying to make your business a success, you aren't focused on it. Getting a small business off the ground requires 12 to 16 hour days. It sucks, but that's truth. If you have a store front, it's harder. It can take up to 5 years for your customers to become "regulars" and it's an expensive learning curve.
Identify your market and cater to them. Everyone else can hang.

    That Air bnb:
My friend owns an apartment near "fun district". She rent it every weekends. She got lots of money doing it, made me think to rent my own.
One day, she asked me to help her clean the apartment since her usual cleaning lady was sick.
So we open the room. It was a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom with a kitchen.
She usually gave a full stock of drinks and snack.
And boy it was disaster. She rent it to a group of young people for 2 days. And.... I don't know what happened there. Did they throw a massive orgies or something? Since condoms were everywhere, even stuck in the ceiling and overhead lamps! Can of bottles, beer bottles, wine bottles, broken glasses, a panty or three, shredded bedsheets, it was horrible.
Then her sister brought out the blue light. Let me tell you, the place lite up like disco ball. It was everywhere.
The floor, the ceiling, the walls.
She calmly said "Well, that's a great successful party for sure".
We had to throw everything out. The bedsheets, the BED! All 3 of them, queen size beds. The rugs, pillows, bedcovers, etc. Scrubbed everything... Twice. Then she bought a pesticide spray thing. Instead of pesticides, we sprayed alcohol and sterilizer agents. Like what doctors do to their equipments.
She charged them double of usual cleaning fees + stuff we had to throw out fees and banned them.

Ty for defending the worker who didn't let a guy in right before closing.
I volunteer at a thrift store owned by a children's charity and often have inconsiderate people come in at the last minute and stay well before close. One day we had so many that not only did I miss my bus home, I also missed 2 back up buses. Since buses only run hourly here, I ended up getting home an hour and a half later than usual.
One of the inconsiderate people was one who does it on a regular basis (as in, weekly) and laughs about it. When a fellow volunteer found out what time I got home, the next time this woman was in she told her off for making me get home so late. The woman actually stopped doing it for a month or 2. But she is back to her old habits now

As someone who has worked in a tattoo shop and seen so many people come in to get names covered up usually within 6 months of getting it done, the best thing you can do is pick something that is representative of your relationship but not an actual name. That way, if something does go wrong, you're not stuck with that person's name or face on your body. It's a beautiful picture that only you know the meaning too

The one about coming in at literally the last minute: I’ve worked retail for my entire working life, so I’ve understandably seen a lot of that. Some people are kind about understanding etiquette surrounding operating hours, some are absolute nightmares.
The worst of all for me was this one guy who used to come in 15 minutes before closing every night. The frustrating part is that he worked from his home as a reiki healer, so he honestly could have come in at literally *any* other time of the day-it’s not like he had a specific shift or anything that made his shopping times unavoidable.
So he’d always come in 15 minutes before closing, and he would always pick over everything, request that you get everything from the back, softly lecture people on product quality, want to have a protracted conversation with the people at checkout, and would, without fail, take a 20-minute-long dookie in the bathroom. He was physically disabled as well, and had a chair, and insisted on getting himself up from the chair every time he wanted to look at something closely, which took a massive amount of time for each instance. Obv. I’m not talking bad about his disability or his tenacity to keep himself up and walking, but it does factor in to the amount of time it took him to shop. He was pretty darn pleasant when he wasn’t lecturing you, so it made you feel super conflicted about how you perceived the whole thing. Most of us actually felt guilty for despising this particular late shopper.
It was management’s fault more than anyone else’s for allowing him to do this, obviously. Any time that he came in, we all knew that he’d be past closing time for at least 1 to 1½ hours. The people at checkout eventually started clocking out & walking out, because it was ridiculous to force people to stay for this dude who could come at literally any other time of day. The rest of us had to stay to do all the closing duties, so it didn’t matter quite as much to us, but him constantly stopping and softly lecturing us of course slowed us down considerably from wrapping it up for the night.
Also, if you’re a butthole shopper and frequent the same businesses, please know that they have a nickname for you. And it’s not flattering. 😅

I used to be a teen cashier and we’d often have a customer enter in the last minute, telling management they had an emergency purchase to make and slowly roam isles for an hour or more and management would only calmly remind them the shop closed an hour ago and they would say they’d hurry but would still move slowly and as cashier there was no overtime pay and I would be instructed by management I couldn’t close the til (after which I still had an hour of work to balance). Often the late customers wouldn’t even buy anything or would buy a pack of gum. Only once there was a guy who came last minute and said it was an emergency and I objected saying that is what everyone says but it’s never true. He took like a minute or two and returned to my register with a toilet plunger - I said wow, you really DO have an emergency purchase! He replied: See? I told you, I would never have made you stay otherwise. I would have been faster but I couldn’t find the right aisle. 😂 We both had a chuckle. I told him he can come late anytime he has an emergency and he said hopefully never again! The event is permanently in my memory all these decades later because it was literally the only time that a late shopper was honest and considerate. I do understand that there are loads of honest and considerate shoppers, but they aren’t the ones who come at closing. Except one. 😂

The only issue, which I am not upset about, was it was a wilderness themed and when the people I was with and I got there the snow plow hadn't made it to the place yet. The owner instead sent 6 snowmobiles to pick us up. We stayed for a week and it was only $75/night. I've never stayed in an Air BnB but when I was working for a commercial cleaning company I did clean one. It was a one bedroom apartment that someone had been living in for a few months but it wasn't too bad. Usually I was paid hourly but this one was a flat fee. The owner wanted just a regular quick clean which he thought would take about 90 minutes. I gave it a deep clean in 90 minutes. The owner was thrilled and it made the company I worked for look good so my bosses were happy too. And I was happy because they were letting me have the whole cleaning fee which worked out to almost twice my hourly rate.
I did a few other little side cleaning jobs that I billed hourly for and ended up getting a nice tip on top of my hourly because they'd expected it to take longer. When you have the right equipment, it goes fast. Work smarter, not harder, every time!

When I was working in a car dealership, we had things like this happen. I was even part of a sting operation once (In CA, one has to get a CARB or Smog Certificate when registering a used car. The guy came in because he wanted to get reimbursed for a Smog Certificate for the car he had a defaulted loan on).
IIRC, the guy in the video had bought 2 SUVs amounting to over USD$120K using the dead person's identity. The police could have arrested him earlier, but the dealership wanted to get this done on the showroom floor for all the employees.

    Plagiarism petty revenge:
In the early 2000s, I worked for a walking tour company in an historic US town. The owner asked me, in the late summer, to research and write a Christmas themed tour for us to offer going into late fall. It took a lot of work to find enough interesting, seasonal-themed content to fill the time frame (hours going through the stacks in various libraries), then translate it into stories and a route for the tour.
Around the same time, the owner decided to partner with a local theater company who performs historical themes plays, in order to increase revenue for both companies. He told me she was developing a Christmas play that would tie in with the tour I was writing, and asked if I could share my material with her, to create some good parallels between the two. I was happy to oblige!
Attending the first performance of the play (which was offered before we started offering the tour), I was shocked to find it entirely consisted of the performers (mainly the lady who ran the theater troupe) monologuing my tour, word for word, in Victorian style costumes. In the playbill, it said that she’d written the play, with no mention of me or any hint at even a collaboration.
When confronting her and the owner of the tour company about the blatant plagiarism, they told me that the tour I’d written was the tour company’s property and I therefore had no claims over how it was used.
I gave my notice, and during my last shift, I deleted every digital record of the tour and it’s route and destroyed every hard copy in the files.
A few months later, a former colleague asked me about it. When I admitted what I’d done, he laughed and told me how they’d had to re type the tour and try to pin down the relevant locations by dictating from the play’s script. It had meant they couldn’t offer booked tours for it until this was, losing them a fair bit of revenue and causing a lot of frustration in the process. They still had my creation worth out crediting me, butt at least they had to work for it.
Also, I’ve heard that tour company has since shut down. Lol!

When I was in college, I worked as a bartender at a small town "dive bar". Closing time was 2:00 a.m. in Idaho, with " last call" at 1:30 a.m. I would announce at midnight "Two hours until closing!" again at 1:00 a.m. I'd announce "One hour until closing!" I knew (almost) every patron-so, I generally knew how the last couple of hours were going to go. I had my "one last cocktail" patrons who would order at midnight, linger over their drinks for awhile, then leave. I also had my "midnight coffee club" - those who would take advantage of the free, freshly brewed coffee put out at midnight - and linger for an hour to an hour and a half over cups of coffee. I had my 1:00 am "one last shot" folks, who bellied up to the bar took a shot, and wandered off into the night. THEN there were the "last call" beer buddies - the ones who at last call ordered multiple pitchers of beer, go and plunk themselves down with their buddies - and when the bouncer flips on th lights, turns off the karaoke machine (remember "small town dive bar" Travis multi tasked! ;) and began telling the "beer buddies" to leave. One or two did - but most ignored him, or more than likely said something like "I paid for these pitchers, I'm going to sit here until I've DRANK ("drank" lol) every last drop of it". Which is where I came in. I would empty ashtrays into mugs and pitchers, to the "songs" of profanity, as bit by bit Travis would usher groups of swearing men (and the occasional woman) out onto the sidewalk - where there was usually a town cop parked outside. (fortunately, most people lived within walking distance, or if they didn't-stayed at a buddies house who did) keys were tossed in pickup trucks, which would be picked up sometime the next day. This was about 25 years ago - when smoking was allowed inside, tills were x'd out manually, credit cards were run through machines and the bar had to be washed, wiped and sanitized. We had to be out by 4:00 am, so the breakfast crew could come in and turn it into a "family restaurant" for the day. People who don't respect opening and closing hours, can affect an entire business's operation. (Not to mention, the tips "that bitch waitress" ie me - had to pull out of those beer pitchers - which I did - I WAS in college after all) Fortunately, 98% of the patronage tipped very well.
