I’m glad you raised this. Nobody can go out boozing and whoring every night, even in your 20s. It won’t take long until you’re down to 1 or 2 nights a week and then you’re going to have to find other things to do with your time. I think people underestimate how difficult that can be. It’s actually a lot easier at home where you’ve developed interests and hobbies over many years and you’ve got access to those pastimes and social connections. Once you go to Thailand, most of it won’t be available to you.
I think you have to be retired already to understand this. When you’re going to work every day and have little time to yourself, it’s easy to think that you’ll never be bored in retirement. It’s not like that really and many companies run retirement planning courses for that very reason. I’m retired now and admittedly I’m rarely bored. But that’s because I have a property to maintain, my sports and other interests I’ve developed. But if I lived in Thailand, I’d have to give most of it up and find other things. And I think that’s harder than it sounds.
Really, I think you’re best off spitting your time between the two places. If you can afford it, keep your own home in your own country and go back and forth. Get the best of both worlds and don’t take the risks involved in emigrating. Well I say emigrating, but really it’s just an extended tourist visa which they can withhold or change the conditions of - on a whim.

Retirement is a complicated time in life regardless of where you go. Depending on how you perceive your career in your overall identity, the loss of one's identity can be an issue whether you are in Thailand or anywhere else. I think the important element is connection and having people in your circle who you can trust as well as having a variety of hobbies or personal interests. Ultimately, you can't treat retirement as if it is a vacation for the rest of your life. Anyway, I am 8-10 years from retirement and appreciate videos such as this to remind me of the topics/issues/concerns that I will need to prepare for as the time gets closer.

When your life is full of short term degeneracy fun, you’ll eventually get bored and go find some deeper connection. But then your brain that has been shooting serotonin nonstop given all these short term pleasures starts to get bored of the boring more stable deeper connection, you end up again at walking street looking for degeneracy.
Such is life of a retiree in Pattaya.

Its the way life goes, we always get used to things. The honey moon phase is real (in everything). What keeps a person still enjoying things after a while, playing mind games- think about a past, when you were in humble beginings, maybe not much food on table etc, etc. Think of starving kids in africa, or war zones, then you start appreciating things right away. Thailand is big, so can always mix it up, plus always can travel to nearby countries for a change up.
Thats why you must find hobbies, have a routine, etc. One hobby becomes boring, do something else. This is like 1st world problems, cmon now.

I'm a simple man. Feeding elephants, visiting museums and temples, lounging on a beach, hiking, "walking the street," taking a thai language class, attending a muay thai event, participating in festivals are all things that will keep me occupied.

Been to Thailand several times . Phuket was always engaging . Pattaya after 3 days bored and wanted to move on . Retirement in Thailand 🇹🇭 presents a problem. Taking your hobby-with you requires transporting it and whether your able to take it to Thailand Is questionable . There are only so many beaches, markets, bars , restaurants you can visit without getting bored and in retirement money is limited.

In my experience, boredom such as this stems mainly from physical and/or intellectual laziness. Why work all your life to make money then retire and let your body and mind deteriorate as fast as possible?!?!?!? Get up, drink water, go have a good workout, learn how to work out properly and effectively, read books, study the local language et al. So glad I left Pattaya where the norm was to drink yourself stupid as much as possible and eat unhealthy food constantly, all while complaining about your surroundings.

Thanks for sharing these thoughts and tips. Really enjoyed the video, and I agree with trying to find that middle lane and to keep things exciting and fresh.
To me, however, the main problem with Thailand are the challenges to do part-time work or to volunteer as a foreigner. It's almost impossible to do those things legally, especially if you want to do multiple ones (for example, volunteer 2 days a week in a hospital, work at a cocktails bar during the weekends and coach a high school sports team 6 hours a week).
Those things can be very enriching and missing that element is a cause of both boredom and concern for me. Hobbies, studying languages, working out are all great but they are not completely fulfilling to me.
I like your idea of going back and forth between Thailand and home, and take advantage at home of the larger amount of part-time work and volunteering options. That could be a good solution, but not sure if it works for the long term.
Anyways, if you have any thoughts or tips about this please feel free to share them :) And thanks for the video again.

Speaking for myself, I would rather live out my retirement somewhere like Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam. It is still affordable on an average pension. However, retiring within Europe or the USA with its associated high living costs I would struggle to have a decent retirement.

Boredom can occur anywhere - more so in retirement. Whilst i'd 'like' to spend some retirement time (59 here) in Thailand, that the accommodation one would get would probably be a 1 or 2 brm apartment, would BORE me quickly, as compared to my 4 brm big home in Central NSW (where i have to look after my place, lawn, and overall investment) . Boredom would come from not having a car, all of my stuff that i've collected over decades. Hanging around coffee shops, bars (not thanks) and trying to find things to do would quickly bore me. The challenge is 'how' to beat the boredom ? - how does one find new friends in a foreign country ? Is this going to be expensive, getting out to find them (clubs, social gatherings, parties, etc) ? I might give it a few months traveling there (granted those visas aren't cheap). Ultimately - it's about trying to find some passions to help you spend your time (gym, traveling, new experiences) - and sometimes home is the easiest place to do that. (buying something with a 'Thai partner ?? ' - no friggin way - don't get suckered into doing that !!!!)

Obviously, each to his or her own. For me, I don't feel the need to fill my day with craft hobby type activities as I find that boring. But I do enjoy being in nature and I enjoy travelling so try and have at least 2 or 3 trips away each year. I also enjoy surf beaches more than flat tropical beaches so many beaches in Asia, while beautiful, are not soemwhere I would like to live long term. Bali is an exception, as well as other spots in Indonesia. But now I live inland a few hours from the ocean and that's hard, but I have work and family activities that make it all good. Spending more time in Perth or the east coast of Australia is my plan for the next few years, as well as SE Asia and maybe visiting the Philippines, but not to live long term.
