Would like to mention the photos of the moss and leaves were a digital zoom off the main sensor as evident by the f 1.8 fixed aperture. This is due to the objects being too close for that lens so the camera app switches to main to compensate.
I think using the f/4 lens was a good decision as the small sensor sizes in smartphones mean they aren’t actually 1.8 or 2.8 apertures. On face value all the photos look decent but when you start your post process, that's when the real camera shines as those files will have way more detail to play around with. None the less we are comparing phone cameras with actual cameras and lenses here and that in itself is commendable.
The actual camera has not improved much.. it's all a lie. The phone adds fake AI optical effects, and actually has an extremely low resolution anywhere outside of the set focal length for that lens. It's complete trash.
For social media the iPhone does well with landscapes and general street/travel photos for viewing images on a small screen at arms length. The difference of the DSLR/Mirrorless cameras comes when you fit a sports lens, e.g. 200-600mm, and use focus tracking for birds in flight, sports events, race cars, or planes/jets, where iPhone photos are a pixelated, out of focus, blurry mess with a subject that’s indistinguishable.
@@robhughes8516His points are 85% right actually. When push comes to shove, every photographer knows that a mirrorless is in a different league to ANY phone, but phones can be brilliant tools in their various Pro modes, and open to excellent editing potential. The key point is this though. When did anyone last put a mirrorless camera in their pocket and carry it around with them all day for any photo or video opportunity that arises?. Some pro photographers do carry phones around with them for sure. Not to replace their mirrorless, but to fill in those spontaneous shots gaps. Both can be incredible devices nowadays in their own way. They can compliment one another.
Same. Phone was actually a lot better in a lot of those where he leaned towards camera. 🤷♂️ maybe it didn’t translate well in the video, but…..none the less, still a great video.
Great video! I noticed in LR the iPhone moss and leaf photos had the 6.86mm (1x) lens, compared to 15.66mm (5x) on the others. Explains why there was such a stark contrast in quality for those images!
Good catch! I didn't notice that when going through the images. I had it set to the 5x lens when shooting, but I guess it auto switched due to the focus distance or available light... annoying that it switches lenses like that without any indicator
@@ZJMichaels I hate this ”feature”. You should be able to at least switch it back or turn off automatic switching on a pro phone. Imagine you were shooting these pictures for print and now the detail is not there.
Came here to point the same. These two shots were not on 5x iPhone optics. I hate when iPhone auto switches the lens like this. Also there are other pro camera apps that would allow you to dial down f-stop and shutter speed. I noticed Sony has shots with 1 sec shutter open, gathering much light, while iPhone seems like struggling to put more light in with shorter exposure.
There is a preserve “Macro Control” option in Setting > Camera > Preserve Settings. I would assume that would stop lenses from switching during macro shots like the moss shot.
The fact that people are even comparing these two is incredible in itself. They have gotten to the point where even professional photographers would struggle to tell the difference.
Thank you for your time and your video. That being said. The shots where you said they looked a little soft. You were shooting at f8 and the iPhone is a 2.8. In that regard I can’t agree. Of course the f8 is gonna have more detail
I noticed with the vine/leaves shot the iphone switched back to the 1x cam based on the LR metadata, probably should use LR mobile to manually take the shots since the stock camera app usually preps images for the everyday shooter (even when shooting RAW).
While you did shoot in ProRAW, and the file does say .DNG, it's not pure RAW. It's edited. If you want to make things fair, you have to disable all the additional edits the iPhone made on its pictures, that way it would be a true RAW vs RAW comparison.
It’s crazy to see what a phone can do these days.. I’m pretty impressed with the iPhones camera, honestly I expected worse results from the iPhone. Now imagine if Apple increases the size of the sensor in a few years like other Chinese phone makers do today. It’s gonna be a game changer.
You always bring the best comparisons, Mr. Michael! Truly amazing! It would be great if you could do a main lens full resolution comparison in the future if you want to.
Also, I believe in this 6:20 moss shot and the leaf shot 7:06, the iPhone didn’t switched to the telephoto lens and zoomed in digitally due to the subject being too close, that’s why those shots looked mushy.
To see those lens and filters. Do a video using them vs not using them. For each shot use the best which the accessories have even if it means using multiple accessories at the same time as compared to just the phone.
just a thing I noticed - on your second two with the tree and the moss, the phone actually cropped into its main sensor (focal length diff between the first shot and second one in Lightroom info) . Hence the lower sharpness .
Now try this with a Sony A7R5, in low light, zoomed into 200%. Then try pushing and pulling the files around in LR and then I think we'll see how phones still have a way to go. Saying that....the number of situations where a phone can compete is getting higher each year. I wonder how long it'll before you basically can't tell at all. Perhaps another 3-5 years?
using a third party app like lightroom for iPhone stops the lenses from switching automatically without you knowing. it also lets you shoot regular RAW which would be a much more interesting comparison than ProRAW imo!
You are amazing. That's a true pro-level review. Thank you. But I would love also to check for us some RAW from the main camera, the reason is the main sensor seems to be much bigger.
Thanks for the great video - the YT Algo brought it to me. Better than the Video about the iPhone is that we'll be at your location soon to see the trolls, the seahawks, pike place and so on...😁 Greetings from Germany
Great review! But I would like to see a comparison of this zoom for portraits between the Sony camera, iPhone 15 pro max and s23ultra. Could you do this?
this phone is insane! 🔥iPhone 15 Pro Max probably the best and the most powerful smartphone this year! Apple always did a very good job. that pushed me and my friends switching from Android to iOS
amazing to see how a 1k phone camera competes with a dedicated 3k camera setup. Give it some more time and the AI might overtake these setups. Don't get me wrong - I love my Sony a7 iv, but it's awesome to have another great backup camera in your pockets everytime! ;)
Great video!! Grazy results from the iphone!😨 oufcorse sony has a bigger sensor, but for a phone its the best you can get!🔥 keep on going mate!! Amazing content, comparing those gadgets is amazing!🔥
Nice video! One thing to note tho, the iphone automaticly switches lens when it's getting darker (annoying i know) to get a lower ISO and higher shutter speed since the other lenses have larger apertures. So both shots of the moss and plants are actually digital 120mm crops from the 24mm lens. So the resolution is wayyyyyyy lower than 12mp.
In photos iphone doesn’t come even close to real camera only in video, I’m designer when I open a iPhone photo there don’t even exist pixels it’s a mix of strange computing you can’t properly edit a photo like that, iPhone fotos ok for social media and that’s it.
Nice video. However, shooting in RAW wasn’t such a good idea because of the post edit. How can you ensure that one edit is as good as the next? These photos should have been shot in JPEG WITHOUT any editing… In final analysis, to keep and share souvenirs, the iPhone is more than adequate. What surprised me was the difference between certain photos, one being considerably lighter than the Sony…
In the end in printed images - even big prints - it will be hard to discern a difference. Obviously bokeh will be a different story, but "normal" photos have become so good on phones.
Keep in mind apple said their lens was F2.0 while your Sony was F4.5 which is probably why the closer images were more in focus. Still impressive considering you had to pixel-peep
I thought every iPhone picture beat the Sony. The troll was the closest. Truly amazing that you can carry that in your pocket. If you fall out in the forest and break your leg, the iPhone satellite SOS will save you; otherwise you’ll die clutching your precious Sony.
I saw a video from two other pro photographers and they trashed the 15PM, clearly the phone doesn't really have a 120mm lense and it's mediocre compared to the 14PM. I will not be upgrading my iPhone but since the 13PM, Apple is just using tactics to make people believe they're make their phones better, but in reality? They're worst. Worst back glass, not really that many lenses, I mean.......garbage, pure garbage. So, I'll keep this mediocre 13 Pro Max for another year.
Check the video description for gear discounts, my gear list, and more. Thanks for watching!
Really impressive comparison! Hard to ignore how close the phone is to the camera.

Yeah the Sony files definitely have a lot more leeway when it comes to editing. Might be interesting to do an editing comparison at some point
