@@tickles5289 You are absolutely right. Non-Cuban latinos make it about their own personal issues. Many Latin American countries are in deed the products of colonization. Cuba on the other hand was the product of settlers. The indigneous people have been killed off, so there wasn't this enormous mestizaje between a handful of colonizers and "raped" indigenous masses. Someone like Desi Arnaz was not an mestizo like you find in Mexico or Central or South America, but rather a criollo which means a European born in the Caribbean.

I would have agreed with you about motherhood, until I watched some interviews with her children. It may have been she just wanted Desi, a sucker for his charisma and romantic side.
As a mother she was described as a control freak, emotionally distant, temperamental...pretty much the opposite of her tv character.
I bet it would be tough having a parent 'seen' as one way, but really be another.

They were NOT interracial. They were inter-ethnic. Many Cubans are Caucasian originating from Spain. Desi's family was one of them. Lucy and Desi were different ethnically. Yes, they were considered mixed in the 1940-50's. Actually, there were other famous mixed couples at the time, but they got the most attention. Very few people fussed about Ricardo Montelban being married to Georgiana Young (Loretta Young's sister) or Brazilian singer/star Carmen Miranda who was married to her Texan American husband David Sebastian until her death.

Thank you. My father came from a small town in Cuba that was founded in the mid 1700's where 90% of the population was of Spanish descent. After the slave revolt in Haiti, Spain gave land grants to Spanish families -not single men- to settle the island, and European immigration was encouraged up to the 1930's and 40's. Pre Castro, 75% of Cubans were of European descent. This is not to belittle or disrespect Cuba's amazing Afro Cuban culture and music which ALL Cubans are proud of, but to call Desi and Lucy's marriage interracial is incorrect.

You know. And the wife with the red hair?" Little White Boy 2: "I Love Lucy." Little White Boy 1: (Pointing, mocking, loudly:) "EEEWWW - you said YOU LOVE LUCY!" Little White Boy 2: (Extremely humiliated, angry) "No! No! No! I HATE Lucy!" And we all did. Everything about her was ugly and in bad taste and unattractive to us. We were normal, hetero, young white boys. Not getting paid to be with her and F her once in a few dozen blue moons, like DA and Gary Morton were. Back in those days in the Northeastern USA, long before lasers and light pulse machines, there were many, many, many females as hairy as Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire but without all that bothersome hair removal, calling us all homosexuals because we weren't attracted to females with thick, thick thick forearm (and who knew where else) hair and thick, thick, thick mustaches. You got used to it. To their non-stop lying to themselves and to each other, I mean. You'd even feel sorry for them, if they weren't too ugly on the inside, also.

I've watched nearly every episode and not once have I ever detected even the slightest hint of racism in the show's writing. Sure, it had its fair share of Hispanic stereotypes but that show serves as a perfect model where stereotypes are tastefully and lightheartedly incorporated for a few laughs. And honestly, it's brilliant. You go away being able to laugh at a different culture but never once get the sense it is inferior or undesirable. If anything, Ricky Ricardo's charm, wit, and portrayal as a normal person who happens to have an accent is to date one of the most progressive and groundbreaking representations of the Hispanic community on TV because it's the closest to the truth.
Other shows and films always portrayed Hispanics in a very demeaning manner as people of low intelligence, one-dimensional, and harping on tired stereotypes designed to make us look bad as a community. The fact Ricky Ricardo was a household character name of a Hispanic that people of all backgrounds loved and could relate to is remarkable for its time.

We could relate to Ricky's "unique English but also to the fact that he was a smart, talented hard working person. Ricky was a great role model.

Arnaz was responsible for the success of “I Love Lucy” far more than most people realize because of his many talents including as a producer and head of Desilu. Arnaz' autobiography goes into this (a fascinating read), and the cultural background, for lack of a better word, 'stepping out' on his marriage (woman did/do it too) was ingrained into his childhood through his culture. Marriage transgressions obviously did not translate in 1940s America and with Lucille, and that's where I find fault in Arnaz. But I suppose falling in love does not always mean intimate communication about how each culture approaches the bonds and limitations of marriage. Doomed from the start if you ask me.

And Desi was super jealous : during the shooting of The Big Street in 1942, Desi was afraid of letting Lucille alone with her partner Henry Fonda. Lucille and Henry dated once in the 30s, but no romance between them. Still, they like each other very much and Desi felt very insecure when Henry was around... So, during the shooting of the movie, he stayed on the set to keep an eye on his wife. But Desi was so paranoid that the director asked him to leave the set!

According to their children, Lucy knew that Desi was whoring the whole time, and she really didn't care. She knew that it was SHE that he loved. The other stuff was just sex. When this all came out in the tabloids in the late fifties, Lucy was embarrassed and felt that she HAD to divorce him to save face. She regretted that decision for the rest of her life. Lucie Arnaz says that one of the last people that Desi talked to before he died was Lucy. They both expressed their regrets and undying love.

So I don’t believe she wasn’t bothered by being with multiple women but you cannot discount the trouble he caused her with his drinking and the fighting. I know first hand he was a nasty mean drunk and after years she was plain over it and the fighting. Two things Keith(Little Ricky) was invited by Lucy to spend weekends at their home, as a young boy he was sad to see & hear the fighting and said she often felt uncomfortable. So their marriage was not the picture or what we saw on TV and Keith said that was sad to him. What Lucy once had was destroyed. You are absolutely correct. To label them as an interracial couple is either for the benefit of sensationalism or just plain ignorance. It is obvious that Desi was almost entirely if not entirely European genetically. Many Spaniards arrived in Cuba in the late 19th and early 20th century. Offsprings of marriages between them would simply produce Europeans. Colonial white Cubans, on the other hand, may have had a dash of this or that but hardly enough to label them another race. I’m not sure if Desi is a product of one or the other but his appearance is strictly Southern European.

With Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball owning the films they were able sell the films back to CBS for 5 Million Dollars, this also started reruns. They were also the first television show not to use "canned" laughter and record the TV show in front of a live audience. Also, I have read in my books about Lucille Ball and I Love Lucy that Dezi Arnaz is responsible for starting the "Conga Line" here in the US, pretty cool to say the least. Lucille Ball is an American treasure, her Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance and William Frawley continue to bless us with the gift of laughter. In my opinion I Love Lucy is the best show ever made.

So the TV studio's and the movie studio's such as MGM probably had to pay a LOT of money out to prevent a scandel. CBS execs didn't like the pilot, but bought the show to appease Lucy (who owned Paramount at the time, where the show was produced as a "Desilu' production). It was cancelled on CBS after one season. NBC then picked it up and it ran for two seasons there as a Paramount/Desilu production.

It was sad to see their relationship suffer from his infidelity. What Desi did was played out in public, because of their fame. Perhaps they stayed friends because Lucy understood that infidelity did not mean he did not love her, but that monogamy was not in his nature. If someone like Hugh Hefner did this, it was part of a playboy lifestyle, if someone like Desi did this, it was an affront to the image portrayed in the 50’s. What can’t be denied is they still respected each other and that meant Lucy would not take his infidelity personally, as humiliating as it was. While they failed as a couple, they wildly succeeded at everything else. Lucy was a workaholic, and perhaps Desi was addicted to sex. Ultimately, she still must have believed in his essential goodness as a person, despite his philandering.
