On March 12 2024, playoff hopefuls Oxford United went to promotion-chasing Bolton Wanderers and suffered a chastening 5-0 defeat. A little more than two months later the tables were turned, as Des Buckingham’s Yellows ran out deserved 2-0 winners in the League One playoff final.
Going into the Wembley final, his team were on a run of six wins and three draws from the 10 games since the sides had met at Bolton. In this Coaches’ Voice exclusive Masterclass, Buckingham explains how he set his team up for the final, including a change to a midfield three and the thinking behind it. Among other insights, he talks through their pressing strategy and its specific line of engagement, as well as the attacking transitions that enabled them to take a decisive two-goal lead.
It is an excellent Masterclass from a highly-rated English head coach, who had more than 20 years’ coaching experience by the age of just 39. Having won Indian Super League and Australian A-League titles, Buckingham has now made his mark on the English Football League.

BUCKINGHAMS YELLOW ARMY! What a man. Absolutely buzzing for the bloke.
Hometown lad. Hometown club. One of the biggest games in English football. Honestly, when I think of the day at Wembley, it still makes me emotional. Thank you Des. Memories that will last a lifetime. An absolute masterclass.

Absolutely hated the day at wembley and how it panned out for us, fair play did a real number on us tactically learning from the pasting we gave a bit earlier,
We had no answer to the plan that the players carried out to a tee and it does seem to be a theme with us, low blocks that everyone tried against us year before last we've started to manage to overwhelm and high presses if not done perfectly (as often they aren't at L1 level) play into our hands as happened in the 5-0, aggressive mid-blocks require a lot of discipline and awareness that I'm not sure many sides could carry out as well as Oxford did in L1 seem to be our new issue

Great video and tactical insight. Just goes to show what prep goes into these matches and how players understanding their roles is so important. You can really see why it takes a manager a few months to get the players playing their tactics

Don't think he'll drop from the championship now in his career, Prem will be calling soon enough. I hope he does stay at Oxford long enough to make sure they stay in the championship for another season
