Bruno Lage succeeded Nuno Espírito Santo as the manager of Wolves in the summer of 2021, and in his only full season at the club led them to 10th place in the Premier League. More than half of their 15 league wins that season came away from home, with the likes of Aston Villa, Brighton and Tottenham all defeated on the road.
The headline result of the season came at Old Trafford, however, where Lage masterminded a first Wolves win in more than 40 years. It was also the first of three consecutive Premier League wins that saw Lage named Manager of the Month for January 2022. In this exclusive Masterclass on the Coaches’ Voice tactics board, Lage details the tactical approach that enabled his team to secure a fully deserved three points, and inflict a first defeat for Ralf Rangnick as United boss.
Out of possession, Lage explains his plan to limit the threat of United’s dangerous and wily front two of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani, with a particular focus on the different pressing tactics depending on which side of the pitch the hosts attacked. In possession, he details the importance of his double pivot - Rúben Neves and João Moutinho - in his ambition to keep the ball for long periods and frustrate the home fans. He also discusses the role of the wing-backs and inside wingers when attacking United’s two banks of four, and the key late change that contributed to Moutinho’s late winner.
It’s another great session with a respected European coach. We hope you enjoy it!

He gets criticized often for his stint at wolves but to be fair to him - the turnaround under lopetegui was more due to the players we brought in not julen.
Lemina and cunha have been our best players since we signed them

Comming from a Benfica fan, that knows Bruno Lage well, he is good, way better than lopetegui definitely.
He has been unlucky since leaving Benfica and to be honest he is not dealing with it in the best ways, it seems to me, but at first he really seemed like some kind of portuguese prodigy young coach (just a curious fact since you might not be aware of this).
Btw, you should feel happy wolves got rid of lopetegui, he is as bad as it gets.

I don't get the criticism tbh. Like I Neil and NES. He overperformed with what he had. Got the best out of their midfield which was crucial to them being able to control games

Wonderful, gifted manager. Deeply let down by the owners at Wolves. We all sung, especually after this match, that he was taking us to Europe. Miss him every day.

Wolves-related coaching masterclass 😁🤩🐺 Fantastic! Real shame things didn't work out long-term for Lage with us, had a rip-roaring start

This guy was magical. Came to the PL and out of nowhere fortify Wolves to be an absolute defensive headache, especially personally as a liverpool fan, twice (Origi being Origi, and last match heart attack). Props to this man!

Forget Wolves, let him discuss his brilliant tactics from 2018-19. He literally got an under performing Benfica side to play exquisite football in the second half of the season.

Dos melhores treinadores que vi no meu clube (Benfica). Fantástico, mister. 👏❤️

Might not have been the best manager for Wolves or the fans but ending a winless run of over 10 years against one of the most dominant clubs in history is a big accomplishment regardless of who you are.

Was hoping it was going to be the West Ham game where we had Neves and Jonny as centre half’s 🤔

As a Wolves fan, I thought Bruno had wolves playing some decent football considering the squad size and options in general.

A much better manager than a lot of our fans give him credit for. Better than Lopetegui imo. I remember this game well, all of my family came down to watch Ronaldo, and I got the treat of watching my Wolves dominate his whole team all day long! Thank you for your service, Bruno.
