I think its absolutely worth it, if the point of the car is not to drive it, but to build it. If its a hobby building cars then the cost and time doesnt matter as much. You build it when you feel like it, and the knowledge you gain is possibly invaluable for the future. If you buy a project car in the hopes of commuting with it then you are looking for a car, not a project.

Makes sense but not driving the project is the easiest way to get discouraged and lose interest

That's true, although I think the knowledge part is less an issue as you have to be able to learn, which is an entirely different skill set

I think something you glossed over was daily driving. Do not daily your project. It is not worth the headache and struggle of not being able to get to work.
Also, i dont think people buy cars because they want to improve their "problem solving skills" they have a passion for the look, sound, and feel of these machines, but may not know how to work on them.

Daily driving a project is a bad move. Can't touch on everything otherwise this would be a 2hr podcast. We may just be different because both David and I enjoy learning while solving tough challenges. Some people build PCs, some do woodworking, and others like us build cars and motorcycles. Each activity requires you to use your brain, and then at the end, you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Cultivating your problem solving skills is an added benefit to each of these, even if it is not the primary reason for the activity in the first place.

Not worth it. In the meantime almost finishing my 10 year old 260z project and can't wait to drive and show it off!
