I Transformed My Datsun 280Z Into A Budget Safari Car
This is part 2 of the two part series where we build this 280Z into a safari car. Make sure to check out part one for the details on the suspension and maintenance done, and now we focus on making this looking both cool and functional. Afterwards we take it out on test drive and compare the differences from our baseline to see if we ruined the car or not.

Building My 280Z Into A Safari Car
มุมมอง 45521 วันที่ผ่านมา
This is my 1977 Datsun 280Z that I've turned into a safari car. This is a two part series where in this first video we update the suspension, wheels/tires, and complete a lot of deferred maintenance in the steering. In part two we are going to take a look at actually making this look cool, that includes the lights, skid plate, mudflaps, and then take it on a test drive to see how well it works....

Our options range from Mr beast style brain frying cuts to slogging hour long drowned out videos of getting a single task done. We try to strike a balance that is interesting, not drawn out, but still provides enough detail with what is going on. There are going to be cuts given that what you just saw was maybe 15-20hrs of work (filming always takes longer), down to 3hrs of footage, condensed into a 19 minute final product.

      It depends on the bike and model of your carb. Some bikes like our ZX-11 use different jet sizes between the inner and outer carbs so its important to know which go where. Here, these all use the same jets and the carbs are all the same model number and parts interchange so its fine.

      Its doable but a lot of work. What was maybe a couple minutes on screen turned into half a day of wiring fun. This was also with the car already disassembled with no interior. Check the FSM for 85 and 86 to verify if there are any differences before diving into the harness swap.

    I'm looking for a first car, and there's a used FJ80 for sale for $12,500. Completely stock, only 119,000 miles. I kinda want it 'cause I think it'd be cool to have an 80 series, and since it's stock and has low milage, I really feel like it's a once in a lifetime deal, but I don't think having an 80 series is a great idea for a first car, due to difficulty of finding replacement parts, bad fuel economy, and being slow as heck. + It's mostly paved roads where I live, so I wouldn't even need one anyways. Is it really that hard to find replacement parts for them though?

    • @Dan_And_Daves_Garage
      @Dan_And_Daves_Garage 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For a first and only car I think it's a pretty bad idea, especially if you only have paved roads. It's really hard to recommend a 30 year old car as well because you just start running into age related issues even if low mileage. I would seriously consider something a little more practical that sets you up for success for the things you NEED like work or school. I would also say it's not a "once in a lifetime" deal. Clean, low mileage examples pop up for sale all the time on the classic car auction sites. Could it be a good first car? Maybe, but probably not. For 12.5k you have a ton of runway to find something else that is more practical, fits your use case, and can still be fun and different.

    If I was 20-40 again, I'd go for the 80 series all day long. Keep in mind I owned and drove a 1971 FJ55 3-speed for about 10 years ("adventure only" rig). As I close in on my 60s, the Cruiser in the suit and tie (Lexus) seems to be the smarter choice for my wife and me. She wouldn't drive an 80 series, but the comfort of a Lexus LX 470 can fool anyone into diving into the creature comforts. I am practicing the "grey man" concept (for anyone who knows), and the 100 series neatly falls into this category.

I haven't really narrowed down a bike yet. Do you think an older 750 such as this is a bit too much to handle for a first time restore and first bike? I'm definitely not interested in driving fast until my hair catches on fire (I'm a bit past that phase of my life at this point).

    • @Dan_And_Daves_Garage
      @Dan_And_Daves_Garage หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd say overall, any of the old UJM style bikes from 70s-80s are decent candidates for projects, and are nice street cruisers. There are small but dedicated Facebook groups and forums for most of the models, especially anything from the big 4 Japanese brands. Mechanically, these aren't very complex and are very well built. When it comes to performance, these bikes aren't necessarily fast by modern standards, but still have plenty of power to get you in trouble if choose to. My 2022 Kawasaki Z650 is faster in every metric compared to the GS750. You still have to respect the machine for what it's capable of, but they generally have very tame engine characteristics and only really start to peak at high rpm. Suzuki also made the GS series from a 400cc twin all the way to a 1100cc 4 cylinder, so I'm sure you can find something within that expansive lineup that scratches the itch.

      The LX470 actually has hydraulic suspension, but most people tend to have problems due to putting off maintenance, especially servicing the fluid. Hard to say an exact mileage for when things start to go south with the AHC system, but these vehicles are now basically at least 20 years old so the systems are going to have things fail just due to age. If I was looking at one that still had the AHC, I'd be asking for maintenance records for the AHC specifically. The Land Cruiser version of the 100 series came with normal springs/struts so you don't have to worry about the hydraulic suspension with that.

    Really an amazing job! You have enough patience like me to own one of these haha! I just got my first Z this year. First v6 and first turbo car I’ve owned. Love it! I replaced the original timing belt and everything else on the engines front end. Thank you for all the commentary, what a great help. I need to do soft brake lines and wheel bearings next as well. Look forward to your next video🎉

      Thanks! It takes a ton of time and patience to work on the cars and then as well to film, edit, and create the videos as well. I'm really glad to see others out there enjoy it and find it helpful!

    The steering rack was actually a warranty recall in 1985

      Interesting, I never knew that. The new replacement rack so far is working with almost 1k miles on it so far.

    hello warm greetings from Pontassieve province of Florence Italy I am the esteemed owner of a 4x4 off-road vehicle Suzuki Jimmy 4x4 with a 1.3 LT petrol m13a engine, all original from 2001, all original that I usually use on rural and forest tracks and with the right mud tyres it goes well and for me the Suzuki Jimmy 4x4 even if it is completely original I see that it is in its natural habitat in tackling rural farm tracks and forest roads that are used by logging companies for the transport of timber with forestry trucks!

      Those Suzukis are awesome. Too bad they don't sell them here in the US.
