- VRChat is the first big social platform which is within virtual reality. As the first of many, VRChat can be seen as a test trial of what will eventually be premier entertainment and social interaction within VR. As such, there are many interesting things to uncover about this virtual world, and the more intimate nature combined with the community driven creations make it so that there's a lot of dark secrets waiting to be revealed. Today, we'll take a look at these through the form of an iceberg chart.

back in like 2018 there was this dude on the floor literally not moving at all from that spot on a maze map. he sorta became a landmark in the maze and would be a point wed meet up at. a few hours in people started to get worried and tried to talk to him. when i got back on the game some hours later he was still there in the exact same position. at some point i saw him in the spawn and asked him about it and he just said he passed out drunk. The dude really had people nervous.
Had a similar situation in one world, but not for quite as long. Thankfully no physical harm had come to him, but he certainly hasn’t be playing as much since (but then again I was still new to the game at the time so I didn’t really know how frequently he got on beforehand).

@demekagamine how so? Literally just bought a valve index yesterday bc of how much ive always wanted to join VRC. Played on desktop ocassionally the last few weeks though, its tough to find people who arent already in conversation and will listen to you
imagine you're a paramedic and you find a dead body wearing a VR headset, and you here someone from the headset say "hey buddy you good?"
I’ve fallen asleep in vr before. I can assure you that waking up is trippy as all hell but it’s not exactly a *bad* thing I think. I have my home world set up to someplace with movies, a comfy looking bed and some nice ambience.
As a Quest user, and someone who likes to think that I’m a decent game companion, it’s frustrating that the use of the headset gets hate and often shunned in VRChat just because of its higher approachability.
I relish the fact that I get to play the game AT ALL, and even though there’s not much content to browse due to hardware limits, I still love each and every moment of it. The new introduction of hand tracking in the game just restarted my love for it, and I can’t express enough how much I want this game to keep living on.
I’ve always wanted to play VRchat, but I lack the money to do so. Thanks for this deep dive into the bizarre online worlds of this game.
Dude its so worth it to save everything u earn for a good few months instead of us buyingg urself snacks or videogames or spending money on transactions i say save up for one of these bad boys

I spend a lot of time exploring VR Chat worlds alone trying to find interesting worlds. Nothing makes me more excited than finding a liminal world. I love it, a lot. Of course I look for other worlds, but I really enjoy those semi-horror/spooky worlds. Not outright horror, but those are cool too. But exploring worlds alone, finding things, it feels special. An adventure, like ghost hunting.
I also spend most of time visiting many different worlds alone. Sometimes the world can be beautiful, sometimes it can be outright bizarre, sometimes there is a puzzle to be solved or out of bound secrets to be found. The possibility is endless.

To touch on smelling things in Vr. Ever since I was a kid I’ve had a strong olfactory sense so much so that I can be tricked into an anticipated scent. Particularly this really comes up in scenarios where I see a virtual door open to the outside, I genuinely start to smell ‘the outside’. It’s gotten weaker as I’ve gotten older but I always get a little reminder that it’s there when I see a scene in a movie or play a game and there’s a door that leads from inside to outside I’ll briefly start smelling nature sort of.

Oh, hey, thank you for covering my iceberg, I highly appreciate it. Anyway, here's some more context to a few of the bottom entries.
Seizure Incident: It turns out that the seizure was just a skit made up by rogue shadow for internet clout. The video has now been deleted, but actual seizures still do happen in VRChat.
The Old Hub Tower: It turns out there is no hidden avatar in the tower, and it's just a rumor made by the community that got spread around back in the old days. However, there are alternative versions of the map that do have a hidden avatar in the tower.
SCPVR: SCPVR is a miltary roleplay group based on the SCP Foundation but uses its own lore instead of the wiki. The group has scheduled events ranging from basic hangouts, casual roleplay events, and serious roleplays that are story-based and utilize military tactics. They have their own maps yet primarily use abandoned worlds for their story-based events. Interesting enough, they are secretive about their roleplays, requiring members to have a certain level of activity to read their SCP files, punishing members for spreading information about serious roleplay events, and condemning those who use the foundation's avatars in public lobbies.
Kidnapping: I'm still a bit iffy on adding that entry. The only sources I got were from eyewitnesses in a Snowden world describing a person moving erratically and screaming in an instance then becoming completely silent a few seconds after.
Suicide Cult: From what I gather It was a group of avid players of VRChat who were interconnected. They slowly started to develop a nihlistic philosophy and eventually committed group suicide, either on VRChat or in real life. This entry is questionable since u/cedarbear is the only source.
The Truth: Though the map is disturbing, the actual content of the map is full of basic creepy stuff you can easily find on TH-cam. As a hangout hub, no such thing I known has occurred.
Dead Bodies: When making the iceberg, I speculated such an event had happened though all I had at the time were eyewitnesses. Now I've seen it firsthand within a public black cat lobby. It is stranger than any normal death cause you are left to wonder if the person is playing a sick joke, had knocked themselves out, or you witness death firsthand. The only real indicator is just seeing how long you see them lying on the ground.
The weirdest part about a VRChat death is seeing only a tiny portion of the lobby mourning (the rest just doing wacky activities).

How do you know that seizures happen in VR if that one was fake? There are other instances?
@@MrRichManGuy The only other accounts of seizures in VRChat is Wikstream's video and word of mouth. With the high amounts of players who use particles/shaders + the daily numbers, the possibility of people having fits or seizures is above average, it just 99% of the time the events are never recorded or documented.
Trigger warning for suicide and an overall disturbing situation-
Almost similar to what you mentioned about the suicide cult, I have actually encountered individuals that were spending their last moments in VRChat- I remember vividly talking to two individuals on the Nordic Lakehouse Home world, and they offered to give me a couple thousand dollars through Venmo.
Obviously at first I was skeptical, but soon I ended up learning that they were actually giving away their money because they believed they would not use it. I inquired why, and that's when I learned they were bent on ending things, and they were doing it together. I didn't feel right taking any money and I told them no, I didn't want their money. It felt wrong.
After chilling with them for a while, they ended up getting off the game- And I realized I was quite possibly one of the last people they would have ever interacted with.

As someone with Hyperphantasia, I can confirm that it is possible to have phantom senses even without a vr headset.
this kind of stuff is gonna be really interesting in about 10 years when the technology has matured.

the death one for sure has happened and is happening right now, I used to know someone who drinks almost every day, recently he said he's having some heart problems, and hes def in the 'no lifers' of vrc, plays it for hours on end and only stops when he goes to work. Pretty sure I've seen him online for like 3 days straight once, I was sure he died, then he logged off, and logged back in next day. He's currently online as i'm writting this 💀💀
emotional trauma and addiction is no laughing matter i hope they can get some help soon. people underestimate how difficult it is to see a therapist.

I get phantom senses in vrchat. They do feel real but I'm susceptible to hallucinations and realize it is essentially an induced hallucination
I have a vrc friend that was an alcoholic no lifer and their have been times where he had alcoholic seizures in vrc. It was rather disturbing and was frustrating when you really can't do anything about it. He later stopped drinking and got off vrc, but has turned into a stimulant addict. We occasionally talk and play valorant for now.
Allthefallen also extends beyond vrc and it's a very shady forum for loli/shota fans to share and discuss content. They were also apart of a controversy in the sims modding community for making a mod for you to have sex with children in the game.
That's messed up man. VRChat needs to fix itself eventually.
Ah I’m familiar with that controversy, it’s definitely very fucked. I don’t want to think of what kind of messed up shit they get up to on VRC. It feels like they’re just trying to get as close as possible to the experience of being sexually involved with kids. I’m honestly quite worried about them being on VRC since it’s a social game and actual kids might become exposed to them now

To put people's minds at rest, it's *not possible* for a random to find someone's address that easily via IP. At most you can roughly determine what town they live in if even that. The only way you can find an addres is if you approach the network provider with a court order

heya not sure if it was addressed but slight correction on the Sign language part. As someone that learns ASL in the Helping Hands community you don't need full body to sign effectively however what can make a real difference is having Index controllers since Index has finger tracking.

Also worth mentioning that ppl might choose these avis as an alternative to the EXTREME masculine or feminine "normals" and not because they actually wish they were trans irl. Not being a unity or blender pro but trying to choose a realistic avatar to express yourself, is a massive challenge in VRChat, especially if you identify as male.
There is an upper piece of the iceberg and it was the Japan Garden. The Japanese author got pissed off that his stuff was being used in an Android thing (I don't exactly remember) and completely deleted his worlds including the one with the river and fireworks. The iceberg part to it is that there was a new unrelated Japanese garden and people had no idea it was not the same author or thought it was the same thing and just kept going about their day in the new world. Asian users would hang out the most here.
I'm a closeted trans dude and playing vrchat makes me forget about my real self, my real body. In there I can be the most manly man ever.

As someone with extreme phantom sense, yes, smells and heat and even implied texture can be felt. It's wild to me some people need haptic vests when I can feel most everything that touches me. I've gotten better at avoiding general AOE type stuff, but if it's directed specifically at me or it's close to me, it's very present. I've been stabbed and run over and shot in the head, and each time I was put in alot of pain and had to put away the headset and go somewhere to let my brain reset.

At the Streamer Awars 2022 he was a nominee for Best Roleplay Streamer.
He even produced and co-directed a feature length movie, called Mushy Apples, recorded entirely in VRChat.
In the past he was known for doing Overwatch, similar to Pokelawls
I was skeptical about phantom sense until I got vr and went to a world called " Fool Pool" there it was like I could smell chlorine. Now that I'm more use to vr it doesn't happen anymore but it's interesting. Also being in water in vr makes me have to take a bathroom break just like getting in the tub or pool does on occasion.

You could theoretically make a real DND world in vrchat.
Make a grid, premade pieces to place on said grid. And build up your world like that.
Few enemy models, player stay in your square system and a DM easy character swapper screen.
Even without grid, playing along in a good location can be enough. No need for it to be "officially D&D" if it fits. A good thing to have is a ruler on the GM avatar (and players if possible). Spawning dice and other fancy stuff can be done with the SDK and a few prefabs.
Either puppet ennemies or ask regular spectators to play NPC avatars, both works.
DM with the avatars in their favorite list is always a must, cloning on when players need to swap makes it easy to manage

@@r7calvin Depends on the design both players and GM wants to follow. "Rolling the dice" can totally be an animation rather than a physical object staying in the world, which is what you said but with extra visual flare.
Nice to see the SCP Group on here but we ain't sus we just are trying to keep the metaverse safe. The only thing weird about us is that our humor sucks. We are cool folks who RP SCP stories in VRChat. Also our secretiveness is part of our RP scenarios to keep the story secret for those joining.

before layer 4, I wanted to play the game again, but now it sounds alot darker than I thought.
As long as you don't dive in those parts, just use your common sense and you'll be fine. Even when it comes to exotic clubs, most happens in private instances, public ones are just full of trolls and bored people most of the time. What these video forget to tell is good luck being invited to the dark side. If you're uneasy, you can also block people pushing you that way. There's tools to protect yourself, don't give in peer pressure.
You forgot something inside the Iceberg. A person names Moshiro or DeathCamp or Death many many more names. Alot of 2017/18/19 Player know him and his story. The impact of him can be seen to this day. He was a Reason why the Orginal Laughing coffin broke, his work is seen in every "Modded SDK", his influence was the reason for ripping when he started a group called On Gang which was a parody of the Off Gang group but he Ripped every avatar in VRChat to the time. That User is a Legend and only OG Player how was conncted to the Toxic and Modding Community know him. The problem is that many of the people who were there at the time have disappeared, but there are still the owners of the Nanosdk who was friends with him.

Phantom smell/taste are definitely real. I don't experience them often, but the two strongest times I did were as follows: first, in the vr versions of resident evil 4, I was in a castle with some clay pots and I leaned over to check if there was anything inside these pots (turns out there is but you have to shoot them first) and immediately was hit with the smell of a slightly musty clay pot. Second, in vrchat, I was in just B club on the rooftop and I stg I could taste the fondue covered bananas. It freaked me out a little at first lol

On that last one about dead bodies. What could make it even worse is when their bodies bloat, pop, or/and decay. Hearing little pops, small movement, or their controller position shrink with oils spilling them away. Good thing we can't see it!

Vket coverage in the west is completely different yeah. I met music enthusiasts who are in dancing worlds all day and completely ignored Music Vket was a thing while it was open and in the front page of VRc. I grabbed them on the last day and made them visit but it's baffling how unaware people even in related cirrcles are to those festivals.

Murder mystery or Dagonrompa in VR version is a good role play that's worth mentioning. There are a few groups spitfire's or freedomfire's group being the most popular. Each game could last 8 hour or more.

Just though I might mention it, PCVR is by no means anywhere near a majority of the playerbase. Roughly 75% ish of the playerbase are actually quest users.
I've not witnessed it first hand, but I known one person who nearly choked to death on food/drink in a vr drinking party and another who got drunk on a regular basis and died from it (though I'm not sure if they were in vr when it happened)

The seizure guy became A.I Angel ( Angelica A.I ) he rebranded and became one of the first Vtubers. His original content was building worlds, avatars and clubs. So not all bad but screw crashers and seizure inducing avatars for they have real world consequences.

So, to give ya some info in the ID ARG its still going on, technically it restarted, 2 years ago it kinda ended suddenly due to mental health issues with some of the folks running it so they needed to put it on a halt for their own self care reasons, that happened around jan or feb in 2020. we thought it was dead and such from no activity but recently activity had popped up like late march was the first signs of it stirring once more, with ID showing up again on April first, its a whole new chapter of things seeing how its played out as a Cycle reset but its active once again.
Ive been loving and playing vrchat since years and this video is just great and came unexpected lol

My viewpoint on VrChat kinda changed after watching this, like, I feel off. I always thought VrChat was a complete heaven.
You should still be able to hear someone breaking down your door while in vr.
Headphones are a thing, so while possible... I think it's pretty unlikely to hear someone (unless you're playing at a low volume).
I remember the last time I hung out before my hiatus from here was in the 2B AFK, and I think I remember seeing that 2B avatar with green name thinking it's an AI. That connected the missing dots of my memories and debunked me that it is a real person indeed.
Some people create alts for that kind of purposes, like ephemeral art pieces. It's not always a tragic story.
There's also game worlds where you get currency every few minutes so it's common to see alts there for days and weeks, only moving when the owner needs something to be brought. It's like having your personal farming NPC... xD
Kind of surprised this hasnt been said but the Ancients of VR chat is an in depth meme club revolving around borpa and doge, etc....

fr i do think having one is more dangerous cause it leads to drinking in secret, and getting piss drunk without being able to seek help. having alcohol depend on parental judgement seems smarter imo, you can seek help, not have to worry about hiding it, and the parents can regulate it.

For anyone wondering AllTheFallen also makes mods for games such as The Sims and specializes in cub, l*licon, and sh*tacon p*rn. It is very disgusting to say the least and I'm still not sure how it's not banned off of the internet because there are genuinely people who defend the community especially in the Sims4 subreddit and says that it's just a "kink/fetish" which liking children or baby animals is not a "kink/fetish" it's a mental disorder and you should be put in prison if you like children or animals that way.
Oh and I sure as hell would not mind if any of pedophiles or zoophiles are completely wiped from existence off of the earth.

@@SonicExpert1991 Maybe I'm just bad at searching, but I only found a few worlds having actual books and not just phamplets of 3-4 pages. There's more nowdays because some big creator sells their template asset but it's always weird to enter a "reading room" themed world with not a single book around.
I don't know if I can help, aside maybe for things like D&D, but meeting other world explorers is always nice.
Still kinda weird the iceberg didn't mention "Udon" and barely talks about prefabs in layer 3. This alone is its own rabbit hole: things like arcade machines in worlds are very recent.
Also for layer 5, the Aincrad story is not to be mistaken for the current "porject Aincrad" which is a world still in developpment. it's unrelated
VRC is basically the internet for VR. You will find everything their. Iv already been to the dark places of the internet so nothing really shocks me in VR. Bad people doing bad thing? Yep. Thats pretty much it.
It's insane that so many people now making VR content got into VR because of recent events or news
I had always just assumed that everyone knew about VR's progress ~2014+ and chose to ignore it thinking it was a fad. I still can't believe that VR is considered in its infancy when it's been a part of my life for so long.
The price of entry into VRC full immersion is still high so yea but fair point
To be fair if you have a quest it does feel like the infancy of VR, horrible FOV (funny enough compareable to 2016 PCVR) and stuff like that.
A lot joined because of the lockdown, and when Quest2 came out. Remember the new year party when the servers broke because there were too many users at the same time? xD
Honestly that would suck to see someone having a seizure in VR. Especially you can't do anything to help except watch. I would of stay by the guy to make sure he alive. If things would of went left I would of phoned called the company and hope they send someone his way.
