I absolutely got the 58 right, but only because the other two sounded identical, so the different one had to be the 58. Regardless, they all sound good.
I for sure thought that Mic "C" was the SM58. I have a SM58. I have developed a new sense of appreciation for my SM58 more after watching this video. You've saved me from pouring more money into a mic when I already have a fantastic mic to begin with. Great!!
The 58 is brighter than the other two (no I couldn't tell the difference tbh!) I have an SM57 and recorded an audiobook with it when I was re-fitting my space. With a bit of work, it sounds fine, a little rougher than the SM7 or a good condenser but perfectly serviceable, clean and clear, although not as much as my go-to a C414.
If you recorded a podcast with one of these mics and asked me if you used and SM7b or SM58, I wouldn't be able to tell you. I have an SM7b and am really familiar with it so in this direct comparison, I was able to tell which was the SM58. I'm listening on my studio monitors. The SM7b is just a bit smoother which is what I like about it. I can not tell a difference between the SM7b and SM7db. At the end of the day, the SM58 is a great mic at a great price, and it's so close that most everyone will be fine with using a 58 and putting the savings toward something that will make much more of a difference.
Actually I was sure that mic B is the SM58 as I own one, it’s a little bit brighter than the other two, but to be honest there’s almost no difference at all between SM7B and SM7dB. 5 SM58s = 1 SM7B + cloudlifter 5 SM58s = 1 SM7dB With some EQ you’ll have the same tone of SM7B, so why spending the extra money? For the looks?
Great comparison! Was able to tell the SM58 apart just due to the fact that I know it's a brighter microphone, which is an audible difference. The SM7B & SM7dB do sound incredibly close if not identical. I'm curious whether they meet the qualifications for a stereo pair.
I bought a couple SM58s, just a cheaper barrier to entry into the podcast game, especially to have a spare or bring on a guest. I like the way it sounds on my initial testing and actually like the way it looks too. I was worried the SM7B/DB would make my voice sound too dark and un-natural, plus it is played out at "the mic to get" for podcasting. Why not try something different?
Hahaha what a reveal ! My preference all along was for the "B", and I am so glad it is the SM58 because it is the one I own and use for my videos. But seriously the difference is so insignificant that for 99% of the listeners (myself included), they all sound perfectly fine. Now, considering the price difference, I am so glad (for the second time I know) to own and use the SM58 that I purchased thx to your review 😀😀
A and D sound the same to me SM7b/db can't tell the difference indeed. But B sounds different and a bit "nasal". The deep and warm sound signature of the b/db is hard not to recognize TBH
HOW DARE YOU ASK MUSICIANS AND BEDROOM SOUND ENGINEERS TO LISTEN WITH THEIR EARS AND NOT THEIR EYES! but in all seriousness great video. May I suggest that next time, maybe let people comment which is which and see who gets it right later. Maybe even let people pick their favorite sound and see who gets surprised.
I liked the video. Thank you for sharing it with us. I also have a request; if possible, please review the Maono PD400X and maybe compare it with the SM7B and others.
I would definitely go with ether of the sm7bs because I absolutely hate the phasy s sounds from the sm58. The sm57 is better imo but has even more emphasis on 6k which can sound a bit harsh at times. Also it doesn't have a popfiltter natively if that is an issue for you.
5:31 , A and C sound the same to me, so i guess B is the SM58.. the difference seems almost significant to me.. A and C handle the low tone of your voice smoother, while B is kind of rough.. Nice comparison though.. I am wearing headphones, so without, maybe it's not that noticeable.. or maybe I'm completely wrong haha, let's see.. You've got some pretty good videos, .. and you make many microphones sound similar somehow,.. probably your voice. Bandrew's voice makes many microphones sound much more different than yours.
Ok, so looks like I was right.. there actually IS a slight difference between A and C also, but they're like 95% similar..I like the sound of C better. The difference probably just comes from the circuitry, since it's essentially the same microphone.
As a casual listener with some interest in mic quality for streaming, my guesses are that mic A is the sm58, and B/C are the SM7 mics. The A mic doesn't seem to pick up all the rumble quality of your voice. - wow ok I got that wrong! I've been on the fence between for my next mic between the rode podmic and the SM58, and I do think you're right, it's the look of the SM58 that initially made me not consider it, but it does sound really good! The SM7B has never been a consideration for me because of the price.
Yeah...the 58 has a bit more character...and needs a slightly different EQ curve...but you are right...I doubt anyone would be able to tell. In fact, that would make for a fun video
When the voice is higher in tone/energy you can hear the 58, but something I would be curious to hear is a 58 with the sm7 FOAM put in place of the metal grill (so remove the metal grill with its own foam and slap the sm7 foam over the 58 capsule). Cause a bigger foam and longer distance to the capsule may well be the reason for a mellow sound with less brightness.
I would love to get the sm58 and the sm7b, however i would have picked the db if I didn't get surgery and brought a mic preamp because I was struggling to speak into my Rode podmic.
Bro, I got it!! I could tell the 58 right away simply because the plosives were a little bit more heard. I chose A as the dB because the C sounded just a bit darker and smoother and that made me think the A and C were certainly the Sm7s but the A was the dB because it seemed just a bit more crisp or a bit more presence. I'm sure you didn't have it boosted, but it almost sounded more activated. Maybe I got lucky on those two, but I got it. But, like your point, 99 vs 399 they are so close, an extra pop filter and maybe a tiny bit of eq and no one would be able to tell definitely. Thanks for the fun interactive video! BTW, I have the 58 and OG Sm7b. Love both.
IMO the SM58 is a all great mic to have for backups / and for live use as well, and given the cost, how can you not have some around just as backups we all know there are always those bandaid applications were you need a mic and yah... the 58 works across the affect area quite well, apply liberally and call your doctor in the morning... (don't lube the mic)
Sensational comparison, as always! I managed to guess exactly which was which in the first few minutes of the video. Tip for those who want to hear these differences: buy Sennheiser HD 560s headphones and listen, in addition to the subtle differences, to every detail of the songs you know. Thank you and congratulations!
I guessed it right. The SM58 seemed a bit "lighter" than the other two (because you're not holding it next to your mouth), while the SM7DB seems to have just a tad more presence than the SM7B. But again, that might have just been a lucky guess.
Love it! Somehow I got it right! I knew the 58 immediately, but just guessed on the other two. I'd love to see the same comparison with a foam-nosed SM57 instead of the 58.
Yes, the SM58 is definitely up there with the Beringer xm8500, which is also a microphone, paper weight and potential something else, trip hazard maybe 😂😂😂❤ but at 20$ it does work, surprisingly. I know it's one of Dylan's all time faves. 🎉
You know I'd sing the praises of the SM58. Everyone should own at least one, eh? (Well, almost everyone. More on that later.). The SM7B was smoother, again to be expected. It's not a bad microphone but not for everyone. There are other good microphones in that price range and the SM7B's design is a bit long in the tooth. Whether it's worth $399 is a matter of personal choice (understanding that you'll likely need an inline preamp). The SM7DB has one built in and is more expensive but, to my old ears, doesn't sound as smooth and warm as the SM7B. You could add a Fethead to the SM7B and wind up spending less with a smoother sound. As for the SM58, it's hard to argue against it. Decent sound, built like a tank, etc. For some people, though, the SM58 may get lost in the mix. Maybe the Beta 58a is a better choice for them. Or something like the SE v7.
SO...who was able to correctly guess between the SM7DB and the SM7B?
No shaming allowed in the comments people...lets keep this stuff clean!
While the SM7B and SM7dB were identical to my ears, the SM58 was immediately obvious from the plosives alone.
i got the sm58 but i didnt have any idea between the sm7db and the sm7b
Very similar, OK, identical on my TV soundbar which is how I watch TH-cam - except for the plosives. Also, the SM7b just looks so much better.
I absolutely got the 58 right, but only because the other two sounded identical, so the different one had to be the 58. Regardless, they all sound good.
@@fnswrestlingSame here. The SM58 seemed just a tad brighter.
They’re all wonderful mics, but for the money, the SM58 is an absolute legend.
All I knew was that I like B...which was the Sm58. Kills the boom adds a touch of airy highs. And a fraction of the cost. Well done!
Lol. Exactly what I was going through! Pretty crazy...
I for sure thought that Mic "C" was the SM58.

It's on my list!
Stay tuned!!
thank you sir ✌🏻
I really thought 58 is B cause I heard a little more upper mids. with that being said, 5 seconds of EQ could make them pretty much the same
I liked my sm58 as an all purpose mic so much I just went ahead and bought another one instead of a "better" dynamic mic.
There were moments early in the video where mic B sounded “almost plosive” compared to A and C. That was my 1st difference indicator
The SM58 is just not classy enough to go with my gold plated handgun and fully sic platnium electric toothbrush.
Thats my defence!

HyperX soloCast Vs Moano PD200 X vs razer sirein mini. Which one is the best for TH-cam y'all?
Omg, i liked and i would swear SM58 was the SM7b !! woooot ?

Welcome recent convert!
I did pick a slight difference between the SM58 n 7b's But they are so close that most people wouldn't hear a difference if the arent "ABing" them.
Yeah...the 58 has a bit more character...and needs a slightly different EQ curve...but you are right...I doubt anyone would be able to tell.
In fact, that would make for a fun video
I use the Sm58 poor cousin the Samson Q2u for my pod casts
But none of these are shot guns. Plus you shoot your videos with a Canon.
Got the brightness of the SM58 but no difference between the other 2
Love my SM58 :D
Well done video. Sm58 for the win 🏆

A- SM58, B- SM7B, C - SM7dB. Am I right? Will find out when I finish the video lol
I put on the headphones for this and correctly got that “B” was the SM58, but the difference between A and C was a total guess
A- SM7db B- SM58 and C- SM7b it was hard for me to pick between sm7b and sm7db tbh
Cool timing, Dave Rat has an SM58 plosion reduction mod this morning, too.

Lol
Have you checked for background noise pickup between them?
Why?
You mean the off axis rejection of the mics?
I did that in my review
I actually guessed that you would put the sm7db as A to trick people even more because usually the sm7b would be A
That's cheating!!
Lol
@@DarkCornerStudiosIs it cheating if I watched your videos enough to see how your mind works 😏
@theoutsiderjess4869 lol...I need to out think the thinkers it would seem...lol
