I don’t think we’ve ever had a horse like secretariat. He can run on anything he can run for any distance, and he poses for any camera. A gift from God.
As a 12 year old boy I watched him on TV. In 1982 I met him in person at Claiborne Farms. I was the first to reach his pasture. He did EXACTLY what the man describes in the video. He looked at me from across the pasture, ran directly at me and skidded to a stop, then ran the entire fence line and stopped right in front of me. The most intelligent and magnificent horse I will ever meet. I think he was half human. Words and video can't do justice. You have to have met him. Remarkable animal.
This horse was so special, it was as if he came right out of Heaven. I do not believe we will see another like him. God surely had His Hand on that horse.
i had a poster of him on my wall as a young girl--and i wept in 1989 when he passed! one of the most magnificant animals ever on this earth! run on Big Red....run on Pony
What's amazing is that Sham's heart was also bigger than normal. Sham gets overshadowed by Secretariat but that horse is also one of the greatest of all time. 1973 saw two great competitors and champions.
I fell in love, with Big Red in 1973. He captured our imagination and our hearts, and I ran with him, stride for stride, through the races of the Triple Crown. I'm 61 years old, and I still tear up, when he ran away, and left Sham in the Belmont. "Moving like a tremendous Machine". There will never, will be another like him. I love you, Big Red.
Sometimes in my life I am so grateful to be alive when something happens. Being around during Secretariat's reign which will never be equaled is one of them. I am so glad that I have lived in a time where Secretariat was here!!! Most gorgeous, amazing, horse ever.
I am far from a horse racing expert, but I remember Secretariat's Triple Crown run like it was yesterday. I was 15 years old at the time. Who could ever forget the way he obliterated the field at the Belmont? It put an exclamation point to his magnificent career. It was obvious I was watching one of the greatest athletes in history--human or otherwise.
I was working at my summer saleperson job when he won the Belmont. People throughout the store stopped and stared at the tv screens. For me, it was a moment in time I will always know where I was. Entranced by a creature who truly was God's chariott.
Very enjoyable video. Saw Secretariat in 1984 at Claiborne Farm along with Riva Ridge (won two of the TC races in 1972) and others standing at stud. Riva Ridge was a beautiful, outgoing, sweet tempered horse. Secretariat was also an extrovert, a real ham who could quickly detect someone with a camera or a carrot. Yet his bearing had a dignity of "somethingroyal." Glad I got to meet him because his racing was only part of the story. His personality was the other part.
And people wonder why I love youtube so much. It is so wonderful to be able to relive these great moments. I so well remember how excited I was when I saw the 1973 Belmont Stakes. I fell in love with this horse.
I too, watched him in 1973. I am 68 years old, so I remember it very well at 29 years old. There will never ever be another event that was so great. As far as a horse, no others really even come close. At 1 1/2 miles distance, his time beat the great Man O War by nearly 5 seconds, 2:28 4/5 for Man O War, and 2:24 flat for Secretariat. There will never be another horse so grand.
What a treasure !!I can't say enough about this wonderful footage of our much beloved Secretariat along with these very heartfelt interviews . I love it ! Thank you so much for posting this beautiful tribute cf. I deeply appreciate it!
Secretariat was Horse of the Year as a 2yr.old in 1972. Do you know how rare, to unheard of that is? It's even really rare for a 3yr.old to win HOY, but completely unheard of for a 2yr.old to win it. No horse in racing history could have beaten Secretariat in the 73' Belmont Stakes!!! NONE!!! It was, and will remain the single most intimidating performance ever accomplished by a thoroughbred, ever in racing, IMO.
My Mother and Grandmother were vactioning in Greece when Big Red was lost. Mom told me that the name; SECRETARIAT appeared on the front page of every major European newspaper when he died. He was truly special.
Yes I was pleasantly surprised by how good the movie "Secretariat" was. They did a very respectable job considering the task of creating compelling entertainment while documenting the greatest racehorse that ever lived. Watch it in spectacular blu ray.
The most beautiful animal ever.Dont know who came up with the name Secretariat, but it is the only name that could have fit him.The name is both powerful and elegant at the same time.Watching the 73 Belmont ,never gets old.
Saw the movie last night. Moved me to tears, what heart ,what a true masterpiece from the Lord. There will never be another, and for him to be euthanised was such a tragedy.
When I watched the Belmont, all alone in my room at college, I saw the actual presence and the work of God for the first time in my life. I cried as did everyone else on that day. After that, I have never doubted the presence of God and I never will. It was a spiritual revelation shared by all who saw it. The film shows the race, but not the emotional revelation that was present that day. Words are not enough.
I remember him, and I thank you for posting this and sharing your love for him. Secretariat will never be equaled. I saw him once, when he was in retirement. I once read what some one else wrote about him, and it stays in my mind; "Secretariat was an angel, sent here to show us what magnificent gifts animals are. He was not of this earth."
It's just too bad no one got to see this horse as a 4-5 yr old. I can only imagine what he might have done then. When you're considered the greatest horse ever and dont even run as a 4-yr old you know you accomplished some impossible things.
Last summer the racing commission finally amended Secretariat's Preakness time to what it really was, 1:53. So ALL of his Triple Crown records still stand. I was so happy when they did that, his Preakness Run is so amazing!
it's quite odd.....his greatness so trancended the sport he became an iconic figured that, much like other great athletes, is a testament to the greatest we can be. you get that when you hear Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky. Muhammad Ali....the type of incredible force for that age that no one had ever seen before. Secretariat is a friggin HORSE and we look at him that way, that he represents the greatest. awesome, damn.
Tears in my eyes! I wish they would've talked at least a little about Secretariat's relationship with Eddie Sweat- his indespensible groom! I seriously cannot wait for the movie to come out this fall!!
Its funny,in Nack's book on Big Red,he commented on how mrs.Tweedy and Lauren were upset when he made that early move in the Preakness. They thought Turcotte was blowing it. Well I guess that vanished after the win.
Have you noticed in the Belmont's race, how the narrator says the word "machine" exactly when Secretariat is seeing crossing the US flag pole???? i always love to see that........Peace,,,,,
The standard of Greatness is in the number of years their accomplishment remains. Let's just remember 1:59 2/5 and 2:24 and know that no horse before of since has broken 2:00 at Churchill Downs (Accept Sham) and no horse has ever run Belmont faster that 2:26. Secretariat did it in 2:24. the distance that two seconds at that speed is something like 13-15 lengths. Secretariat lives in the presence of the God's.
@kwgrid Bill Nack's is phenomenal and truly fitting for Secretariat. The imagery he gives is wonderful and puts you right there in the paddock with Big Red, it's a must buy and a must read.
Oh, God ... whenever I get depressed about getting older, I remember Secretariat, and kick myself. What if I was too young to remember him? Wouldn't it be awful? Jesus, we love you Big Red.
Absolutely fantastic. I would love to own this if you got it from a dvd. One of the greatest atheletes ever. Gorgeous. Thank you for posting. RIP Eight Belles and Barbaro...
I remember watching this horse at the victory ceremony on TV....he was like a victory spirit majestic pure it impressed me so much i remember to this day...than you... rjmendera
He didnt accelerate through the entire Belmont..they got that wrong...he did that at the Derby. But obviously his 2:24 is impossible to think about split-wise. The best horse to ever run on a track.
I wasn't a horse fan at all before meeting Secretariat. My personal experience changed all that. Every equine enthusiast should have had the chance to meet him. Sorry you never got the chance. He was something else.
So long as we're fact-checking, they didn't just whiff in inaccurately crediting him with negative splitting in the Belmont instead of the Derby. To wit, from 4:57 : "...but to become the first horse in 22 years to win the Triple Crown, he would have to..." Oh dear. Of course, it was in fact exactly a quarter of a century since Citation last won it in '48. Anyway, gorgeous vid. The clarity in the standard quality setting is so good, I'm afraid to click on the "high quality" option!
I've been thinking a lot about Secretariat and Man O'War this week. Both tremendous athletes with big hearts and wonderful spirit. Thanks for posting this footage. My own horse (Agadir) was a big chestnut. There is nothing in the world like a horse.
I recently read that Secretariat had approx a 22lb heart, 2.75 times larger than the average horse or the same size. Most of the fastest horses of all time, when a necropsy was done, also had hearts much larger than the average which I find very interesting.
I can't believed I missed the Belmont Stakes 1973. What a wonderful horse he was. Hm, let's see if this century will bring some superhorses as well; if I'm still alive in the year 2100, I'll be interested to take a look at the Top 100 racehorses of this century, remembering Rachel Alexandra & Zenyatta... Can't wait for Rainaways racing career to start. =)
cf, where does this video come from? Boy, wouldn't it have been a thrill to visit Big Red in his paddock at Claiborne. I would have taken off running down the fence just to see him race me! I think from his personality he'd thought that was great fun. Of course, he'd have been laughing at my speed!
thanks, cf It's late, but somehow fact that alysheba has this NEED to bring Secretariat down seems so clear. He deserves the high praise. To think he'd not only win the Triple Crown for 1st time in 25 yrs, but set records in all three races, not maybe, one, not two, but ALL THREE, all on his own except for 2 whacks in KD stretch, & other world & track records he set. As Nack said if he'd run at 4 "he wld have carried the proverbial refrigerator on his back, how about 1 1/4 in 1:56 4/5?" he said
Please allow me to second that recommendation. I blew thru it in a couple of days at leisure this summer --Secretariat-style, one might say-- and learned a whole bunch. And that'll learn ya to stop lending out books cf! ;)
What a magnificent animal that left a lasting legacy. Even now, nearly forty years after his accomplishment, his ability continues through his daughter, Terlingua, to her infamous son, Storm Cat. I wait with bated breath for the movie, but worry that like so many horse stories, it will be butchered to suit an audience that has little true grasp of equine reality. I will hold out hope though.
cf1970, another great video. I liked the quality of the Derby footage. Maybe there is a clean copy out there somewhere. I remember seeing a clean clip of the Belmont one year in the preview show. Probably a reel on a shelf somewhere in the CBS archives...
@kwgrid I have "Secretariat's Meadow" and also Raymond G. Woolfe's book, "Secretariat." Plus I've googled and read tons of articles online and utube interviews. I haven't read Bill Nack's book so I don't know how good it is. Of the two books I have, Raymond Woolfe's is the best. Lots and lots of great pics and little details. :)
@THE0591301 how I envy you. It warms my heart when I read of his personality. Read that he wld mosey up to an admirer at his paddock fence, give impression he wanted to be petted and wld drop a mouth full of grass in their hand.
How wonderful it would have been to have breed Secretariat and Ruffian and see what foal would have been produced. Secretariat was the best when he ran he would take your breathe away. Seattle Slew was good Affrim was good to but Secretariat would have beaten them both.
and fm 1: thru 1:30... not bad either, look at that coat ! Watch how he walks, his hind legs, read one guy said Secretariat had so much muscle, he didn't walk, he waddled.
I don’t think we’ve ever had a horse like secretariat. He can run on anything he can run for any distance, and he poses for any camera. A gift from God.
I'm grateful to own a great grandson of Secretariat. He too is an amazing horse and looks just like his great grandpa. He's 24 now and retired.
As a 12 year old boy I watched him on TV. In 1982 I met him in person at Claiborne Farms. I was the first to reach his pasture. He did EXACTLY what the man describes in the video. Did this horse even have a single conformation flaw at all?? He looks absolutely perfect- like artwork.
Beautiful, wonderful tribute to a magnificent and one of a kind athlete and horse - so much more that the word horse can convey.
Thank you for letting me relive seeing Secretariat. I saw all the races as a 20 year old and loved this horse so much. He was truly magnificant.
Happy belated birthday to a horse I have loved since childhood. He was the greatest there ever was. I can see him running around Horsey Heaven.
Oh, what an amazing animal. Secretariat was so special he will be remembered forever.
My Mother and Grandmother were vactioning in Greece when Big Red was lost. Mom told me that the name; SECRETARIAT appeared on the front page of every major European newspaper when he died. He was truly special.

He's running like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE! Belmont time, 2:24. Distance, 1.5 miles. Average speed = 37.5 mph. I think I'll give this horse 5 stars.
I remember watch each of the Triple Crown races on TV that year, it was truly amazing.
The most beautiful animal ever.Dont know who came up with the name Secretariat, but it is the only name that could have fit him.The name is both powerful and elegant at the same time.Watching the 73 Belmont ,never gets old.
I know ... incredible that a horse's neck can make you want to burst into tears!
Saw the movie last night. Moved me to tears, what heart ,what a true masterpiece from the Lord. There will never be another, and for him to be euthanised was such a tragedy.

there will never be another horse like the mighty secretariat love you big red
Thank you for that video. The most magnificent horse of our lifetime.
What a beautiful, beautiful horse! Thanks for the memories Big Red! I loved every race and cried when you won the Belmont!
One of God's perfect creatures ,one of the likes we will never see again!!!!
Thanks cf for this documentary on Secretariat-what an animal-they are working on a movie about him. The'll never be another in our lifetime.
Tears in my eyes! I wish they would've talked at least a little about Secretariat's relationship with Eddie Sweat- his indespensible groom! I seriously cannot wait for the movie to come out this fall!!
You were God's gift to us mere mortals. I will always remember you.
Big Red: THE GREATEST EVER!!!
The greatest non-human athlete in world history.
Secretariat was a case of the horse needed the jockey for technical purposes only.
Thank you for this Video, What an amazing horse and what an amazing owner!
Without doubt the greatest racehorse in my lifetime, Amazing Animal, and what a looker.
Its funny,in Nack's book on Big Red,he commented on how mrs.Tweedy and Lauren were upset when he made that early move in the Preakness. They thought Turcotte was blowing it. Well I guess that vanished after the win.

LOL...Check him out...walking over to the fence & kissing the camera. What a character...what an Amazing horse !
Greatest horse the Lord ever made!!!!
Oh, God ... whenever I get depressed about getting older, I remember Secretariat, and kick myself. What if I was too young to remember him? Wouldn't it be awful?
Jesus, we love you Big Red.
Can't help feeling this is true!
:) Great one!
Absolutely fantastic. I would love to own this if you got it from a dvd. One of the greatest atheletes ever. Gorgeous. Thank you for posting. RIP Eight Belles and Barbaro...
Never before,never since,never again,a Secretariat !!!
that is one incredible performer! Beautiful and lovable to! =]
I remember watching this horse at the victory ceremony on TV....he was like a victory spirit majestic pure it impressed me so much i remember to this day...than you... rjmendera
You've done gone and done it again CF....Bravo sir!!
Also thank you for the Man O War Video too.
The three hacks that disliked this video must have a small heart! I wish I could have been alive to see this horse race.
He didnt accelerate through the entire Belmont..they got that wrong...he did that at the Derby. But obviously his 2:24 is impossible to think about split-wise. The best horse to ever run on a track.

Secretariat = mega rock star!! :-)
best ever never another like big red
We're praying for ya Penny!

too!!! This is a great!!!
@cf1970 - Thank you for posting as always. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
"O Rare Secreatriat"
Poor Sham got unlucky that he had this wonderful blazing colt in the same age as him.
The breatest horse ever, was a beautiful thing to behold. His name: SECRETARIAT
Please allow me to second that recommendation. I blew thru it in a couple of days at leisure this summer --Secretariat-style, one might say-- and learned a whole bunch.
And that'll learn ya to stop lending out books cf! ;)
Best of luck!!! your horse will have a royal bloodline !!!
0:34 - Could also very well be the sexiest horse of all time. The Brad Pitt of horses.

Great post...thanks!!!!
Horses back in them days were alot chunkier, and looked stronger, i think alot of them now are fragile and weak looking :/

Usain Bolt got nothing on Big Red.
After watching california chrome run a pedestrian belmont yesterday I wanted to see what a real superhorse loos like.
@dapplegray98 - if you have seen the movie Secretariat.. you should have seen her in the last part. :)
How wonderful it would have been to have breed Secretariat and Ruffian and see what foal would have been produced. Secretariat was the best when he ran he would take your breathe away. Seattle Slew was good Affrim was good to but Secretariat would have beaten them both.
the greatest
and fm 1: thru 1:30... not bad either, look at that coat ! Watch how he walks, his hind legs, read one guy said Secretariat had so much muscle, he didn't walk, he waddled.
