    I was in Germany (U.S. Army) when he won the Triple Crown. Our day room (with one TV) was half full at Kentucky Derby day. It was packed at Preakness day. Our CO brought in a bigger TV and placed it in our dining hall for the Belmont - it was standing room only. Halfway through the Belmont, the hall was rocking and shook like an earthquake, everybody were screaming. I'll never forget that day, everyone were hi-fiving and hugging everyone..he brought us all together as one that day//

      lovely story, Mikey Likey!!
      My dad was career USN.
      In the 1970s we were in DC.
      My dad' s job was in USN admin. at the Pentagon.
      I was a fascinated young schoolgirl. I vividly recall watching all three races on our family tv.

      He is awesome. It's hard to believe Zenyatta was larger than him and most other in history at 17.2 hands and over 1200 lbs. Of course she's not in Secretariat's league. She was massive even if she were a Colt. I think she was overrated, but a great horse. . Hope her fans don't see this. Lol

    in 2012, after a review, Secretariat was finally awarded the record of 1:53 flat, setting a new Preakness record that still stands as of today. January 20, 2022. He still holds the three records for the three TRIPLE CROWN RACES. AND THOSE WERE THE BEST TRIPLE CROWN VICTORIES OF ALL TIME!

    I'm not a horse person, but for whatever reason, I've kept up with Secretariat. In the Seventies, I was in my 20's, and this beautiful animal caught my attention. Even today, in my 70's, I watch these videos mainly because Secretariat was such a fantastic horse. That horse showed me how to keep going as a human. Yes, he's been gone for many years, but he's such an inspiration to people today. If a horse can do it, we, as people can look to Him for inspiration. He will always be close to my heart.

    Ron Turcotte is an incredibly humble guy. Eddie Sweat did not get the credit he deserved. What a team. Amazing. I was just starting out in the Navy in 1989 and was at sea with my squadron when the CO of CV-67 came over the 1MC and announced that Secretariat had died. That shows you what kind of effect he had on America.

    • @Dannykeith46
      @Dannykeith46 9 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Mike Rodriguez- so now you are claiming SEC used Steroids?? You will stop at nothing will you to embarrass yourself!!!! Listen to me carefully "SHIT SHOVELER"......NO ONE takes you comments seriously anymore and true to your true profession which was to clean up Sham's horse crap, you are nothing but a DONKEY!!!!!!

    • @Dannykeith46
      @Dannykeith46 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Mike Rodriguez- Just remember, Secretariat Buried Pancho Martin's precious Sham....BURIED HIM....EMBARRASSED HIM.....HUMILIATED HIM.......and your and your ass-whipped staff will go to your grave hating Secretariat for it. Pancho Martin made it perfectly clear in all of the major newspapers before the TC that Sham was the finest horse on the continent and to deny that would be your grandest lie. He, you and EVERY member of that humiliated staff could not possibly fathom the butt kicking Secretariat would lay on Sham. God, you guys were so intimidated by Secretariat that you completely lost the Wood memorial to Angle Light because Pincay was under strict instructions to wait for Secretariat to make his move, preventing him from closing the gap on Angel a furlong earlier. Because Secretariat pulled up every time Turcotte asked for speed by tugging on the bit by his silver dollar sized abscess, SEC never made a serious move, costing Sham precious moments to narrow the gap from Angel Light at the top of the stretch. Sham would have buried Angle Light if SEC was not in that race and you surely know that asshole!!! Now go ahead....come back at me with some more of your absolute retarded bullshit to deny what is truly accurate!!!!!!!

    • @Dannykeith46
      @Dannykeith46 9 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Mike Rodriguez - Bottom line is WITHOUT Secretariat's existence, Sham would have won the Wood and all 3 TC races, placing his lifetime record as 9 wins in 13 starts, a triple crown, a '73 horse of the year award and not having to retire as a 3-year old meaning "God Only Knows" how great he would have been as a 4-year old. Sham would have been an all-time great, but that was all shattered courtesy of Big Red!!!!!!!!

    • @Dannykeith46
      @Dannykeith46 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Mike Rodriguez- EXACTLY the response I expected from a piece of trailer park trash like you. You have NO EDUCATED response because everything I said is 100% accurate.......what a f%$%$ing loser you are....you and your bitter trainer Pancho Martin who was humbled beyond belief in 1973 by the greatest horse who EVER graced a racetrack!!!!!!!!!!

    Secretariat was always my favorite horse so it was with great pleasure to watch him win the triple crown in 1973. I absolutely went crazy watching him win the triple crown. My family thought I had lost my mind! One item on my bucket list of living life was to own an Arabian horse. By far the most beautiful animal on this earth. My dream came true in 1992 when I bought a pregnant mare. In May of 1993, I watched as she gave birth to a chestnut colt. And imagine my surprise and delight when I saw he had three white stockings, on the same legs as Secretariat! I named him Pharo after his Dad, el Pharoah. I gentle trained him, when I mounted him for the first time he didnt even try to buck me off! and I rode him a lot. He had a choppy trot and he couldn't run for diddly squat but I didnt care I owned a horse that was marked like Secretariant! I think he was the love of my life. RIP my Pharo.😢 you will always be in my heart.

      A lot of us were with our dad's at Belmont the day Secretariat raced the greatest race ever run. My father hung out an hour after the last race to let the traffic clear out, and me being a 12 year old kid in love with Secretariat picked up all the pristine programs off the floor and took them home and put about 20 in a box. About 15 years ago, I saw how much they were selling for and went to my parents where the box was in the attic only to find out my father had tossed the box out when putting a new floor in.....when I told him the programs values, he said "If that's the worst thing that happens to you in life, you're doing okay"...lol....he passed away in 2017 at 92, and when he got really sick, we talked a lot about our trips to the track on weekends and the great times, win or lose....when we lost it was "Pizza again", but when we won, we would go through Little Italy and get calamari or scungilli at Vincents on Mott and Hester.....medium hot sauce because the hot would make a bull run across a field. lol......great memories driving to the tracks, coming home, and of course, being there. And the tops was always the 73 Belmont Stakes....

    I was fortunate enough to see all 3 races of the 1973 Triple Crown on TV as a nine year old girl in Wyoming. My sister and I were literally jumping up and down and screaming for him to win and deliriously happy when he did. It occurs to me that both Secretariat and Seabiscuit came at times in our history when we as a nation were depressed, divided and not doing very well. Seabiscuit bounded on to the scene during the traumas of the Great Depression, and Secretariat showed up in all his glory as Watergate and Vietnam were tearing the country apart. I think they were both gifts from God, sent to bring us together and remind us of the meaning of awe.

    This Kentucky Derby was one long relentless drive by Secretariat. It's considered the best KD performance in TC history, and not just because he broke the 2:00 min. mark. Turcotte split the two horses in front him from behind. Then Turcotte pulled on right rein and took him to the outside in a crowded field. From that point, without pushing him at all, Secretariat began that drive, going faster and faster passing the remaining ten horses, each 1/4 mile faster than the previous one instead of slowing or tiring at all. At the point in the video with the widest gap with 4 or 5 horses in front of him, Turcotte wondered if Secretariat would be able to keep this up. Well, he did, finishing the last 1/4 mile in 23 sec FLAT. Never before had this been done, EACH 1/4 FASTER while driving fm the outside 3 or 4 wide in a 1 1/4 race.

      Secretariat was amazing, I firmly believe that his jockey Ron Turcotte, (who never takes credit for Secretariat's wins) was the best jockey ever, especially for Secretariat. He rode him humanely, not cropping him to death, just hand ridden. I believe that says a lot about the horse and the jockey!

    • @whatevergoesforme5129
      @whatevergoesforme5129 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Turcotte did push some horses beyond their limits just like any jockey and was reputed to push harder than other jockeys. It just so happened that Secretarial was a freak of nature and was the perfect horse with a massive heart that wouldn't burst unlike one of the horses Turcotte pushed. Turcotte knew that he was riding a superb and intelligent horse so he could not really take the credit himself.

    Although I had ridden many horses through Chicago's Lincoln Park bridle paths, I had never paid any attention to Horse Racing. By accident I caught the Kentucky Derby and saw this magnificent animal's performance so of course I had to see the next two races. I want to say that I feel Truly Blessed to have seen him and that Joe Brindley was right when he said Secretariat was God's horse.

    Anyone like myself who saw Secretariat's unbelievable performance at Belmont that year had tears in their eyes as we all watched as he literally became Pegasus, leaving the other horses behind at Belmont like they were standing still. 45 years later, I'm not ashamed at all to say watching it here again still brings tears to my eyes.
    I've seen and done many things in my life that were memorable, but watching a miracle on 4 legs make history ranks pretty high on that list, especially given the state of the country at the time.

    Just one more thing, which I learned from another poster: every year on the day the Belmont is run, a wreath of carnations is placed on Secretariat's statue; they know he'll be the true "winner" of the race.

      "Just one more thing" does Columbo put the carnations there?

    • @WickedFelina
      @WickedFelina 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is the blanket of carnations that was draped over him on June 6, 1973. Every year prior to the race everyone is fully aware, he has already won. ....and, one more thing even Greater still. every year, no matter if another horse won all 3, Secretariat again, wins the Triple Crown. Why? To this day he out runs every horse, every race because he still holds all three records.
      This year in the Kentucky Derby, the speed colts ran, as they put it "Blistering Hot fractions!" The final time was 2:02.61. Secretariat's final time was 1:59 & 2 5ths. Forensically, if timed today under the "NEW" system (which is 1/100th of a second instead of 5ths - which is
      .20 of a second) the possibility of Secretariat's, final time is pretty high that it was faster.
      Why? Under the old time, when you hit the 5th (or .20 of a second) one 100's over that 5th, the time clocks up to the next 5th which would be would be .40.
      Secretariat's time today could be 1:59.21. Therefore, his record could be beaten simply because of the change from fifths to 100ths, and only by one one hundredths of a second.

    All those associated with Secretariat (Except for the jockey), along with knowledgeable press, later commented that they thought the Belmont pace was much too fast; worrying that it could lead to race loss or even disaster. Actually not too off the mark, look at where the exhausted Sham ended up ! (5th spot). Even in the Preakness, from LAST to 1st in 21 seconds! Secretariat was truly in a league of his own...

      Barbara Barnes oh I agree Sham didn’t have a chance at beating the perfect athlete that the world was ever seen , I just think Sham would have knocked off a few lengths off the 31 had he not broke down, but that wouldn’t have taken away anything from the unearthly performance from Secretariat. The greatest of all time past and future

    • @johnwalsh3215
      @johnwalsh3215 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Barbara Barnes no horse could keep up with Secretariat really in any race he was in other than his first race and more just like a learning experience for him, he learned what racing was all about and how he would go about it, kinda like coming up with his strategy, he was so smart!!! The one race he is listed as second in his 2 year old season he actually won by 8 lengths but was disqualified to Second. The 3 races he didn’t win as a 3 year old he had health issues that played a roll in his not not winning I believe. The abscess in his mouth that we all know about from the movie then he had a fever and was scratched from a race and they brought him back to soon, then the other he had a respiratory issue and again they brought him back to soon, people were the main reason he had losses, healthy he was unbearable! Yes the ESPN video is a great one! But then what video about him isn’t a great video! I’ve seen this one half a dozen times at least along with the ESPN one and there’s one more 40+ minute one I’ve seen half dozen times for sure I just can’t think of the name of it? It’ll pop up one of these days and I’ll watch it again, I watch the short ones almost daily I’ll check out one or 2, gotta get my daily fix of him haha. Thoroughbred’s are amazing horses I wouldn’t own any other bred, I have 2 off the track Whoopsnotme and Regal Relaunch, Secretariat is their great great uncle through Bold Ruler but then what horse doesn’t have Bold Ruler in their bloodlines haha. What other athlete brings out a emotional response like Secretariat does decades later regardless of how many times they’ve seen the races, that says something about how truly spectacular he was. The greatest of all time past, present and future!!!
