i actually loved seeing tahani end up being fulfilled by her own company and competence. she started the series so obsessed with the idea of having a soulmate, and seemingly unable to be alone with herself despite also often feeling alone when surrounded by people; to me, the complete lack of mention of romance at the end of her arc was a beautiful and subtle way of displaying her character growth over the events of the story. she also started her arc as an out-of-touch socialite with no practical skills, and i love that instead of showing her finding completion through the pseudo-romantic connection she originally wanted, she found it through genuine connections with her friends, reconciliation with her family, and learning how to do literally everything by herself.
Tahani's ending also *very* much gave me the feels. Her realization that she was basically *born* to be an afterlife architect and finding true passion in it for the first time, taking the things that she truly enjoyed doing from her old life and leaving the rest behind to do something new and *hers,* was her most satisfying moment in the series for me. I like the fact that she didn't end up paired off, but wholly focused on her own potential to grow and contribute just for the love of doing so. She now uses her experience to be satisfied that she did a good job, instead of trying to impress people who *genuinely* could not give a shit about her.
This show is so smart, and deeply empathetic, it doesn't look down on viewers, but takes them through the journey along with the characters. Thank you for analysing it
My favorite line from the whole show is when they are hiding under the train as the bad place people leave. When the pop up and Michal says "you guys!!! I was so scared for you!" just gets me every time. It was that moment I knew he was truly on their side with everything, no more tricks
Walking past a piece of trash on the ground, fully stopping for a couple seconds, then turning around to pick it up is an experience I've had MANY times, and it's all because I thought about this show in that moment. It really made me evaluate the choices I make almost every day, and each time, I try to be a little bit better. I'm not joking when I say this show legitimately changed my outlook on life. We can all be better. Even the desire to be better makes us better, and I've been so much kinder to myself and others since realizing this. And of course, there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. Take it sleazy.
this show honestly got me through the pandemic. I was going through a very bad identity crisis, and the show made me realize that maybe, just maybe, I will be okay, no matter what I decide to do with my life, as long as I can continue growing and learning. it's not only a great show, but it's also a fantastic portrayal of what makes humanity so human. flawed, selfish, a bit trash, but still, capable of change and true self-improvement if given the chance.
The fact that just listening to the epilogue being talked about makes me nearly cry is an indicator of how amazing and heartbreaking that ending it. One of the best shows I'd ever seen
you missed a point about tahani ending up not dating anyone - THAT WAS THE POINT! it was to show how much she grew - how she used to need constant validation from other people - her ending up with no one was to show how she eventually learned to not need a relationship for validation and ended up liking herself without needing someone
I watched the ending of The Good Place shortly after my dad passed away. It was such a beautiful and perfect ending. It lead me to some really positive thinking. I'm grateful The Good Place exists in the world we currently live in
This show was so refreshing to me it wasn’t just another formulaic satire show that was ripped straight from peacock which already makes me enjoy it a lot but it’s also super clever, creative, and original
i genuinely really think the good place is one of those shows that are a one in a million find. it's a show that genuinely grew. there were good parts that would've been great gimmicks. like the first season set up would've been a great thing that could've been the whole show premise. a group of bad people find out they're actually in hell and they get reset when they find out. but instead of having any consistent stage, they make a journey out of following what it means to die. what it means to live. what it means to be good or bad. what it means to have an afterlife.
A couple of notes: 1) Glenn never questioned whether the people he was torturing were bad, be they babies, children, etc., for the same reason everything happened in the first place: he believed the system was infallible and he had faith in it. The soul's points were totaled and it ended up with him, and even if he ever thought to check the math one day he would get the same number because the problem is systemic. Glenn's statement is one of the many times the show takes the subtextual through line of the show and turns it into text. 2) That is also the answer to *any* "what about babies, children, etc." question: The system was considered infallible and so not questioned. And honestly, I'm not sure they changed the math at all in the end, only made sure that given the chance to be better, a soul would get the chance to choose so. 3) While yes, Jason is probably the *dumbest* character in the show... don't sleep on him. He's dumb as a bag of rocks and never really gets any smarter, but in his life he did and saw so much in his tiny little Jacksonville world that he ends up with some of the most poignant and insightful moments in the show. Whenever someone comes to him with a problem, he tells them a story that sounds like nonsense, but it's not. It's always something that contains a parallel to the problem the person is having and how he handled it. Almost all of them are turning points either in the story or the character's arc. I think it would have been very hard for the show to go the places it does without these silly, seemingly random stories. Whenever I think of this show, hell, whenever I think of certain things in real life, I remember the story he told about how his buddy was a single parent who worked multiple jobs and didn't have time to research every tomato he bought. No one else in the show had seen the kind of poverty he'd seen, and wherever things went from there would have been much worse without him. Don't get me wrong, he's not my favorite character by far, but every time I watch through the show I appreciate him a little more. I still haven't come around on Tahani. :P
Another note about Jason because I can't help myself: If you are down on him, I recommend that you re-watch the whole show with an eye on his words and actions. He is unique among the four and able to have the insight he does because he is the least self-centered of the bunch. Chidi's anxiety, Tahani's inferiority complex, and Eleanor's extreme insecurity and avoidance, had each of them turned deep into their own heads. If you put aside the likely millions of dollars worth of property damage and so forth, Jason lived outside of himself. He had a real social group, and was a truly loyal and supportive friend to the people in his life. He knew so many different kinds of people in so many situations, and he had a ton of hobbies and new things he wanted to try all the time. He's spontaneous, always coming up with crazy ideas, and he always wants to cheer up the people around him when they're sad, or make them feel better if they start to get too down on themselves. Even if he's not really sure he understands their situation, he *listens,* and finds something to say about it, and it's enough. He questions authority and the people around him, not out of defiance or anxiety or aloofness, but out of actual concern that someone might get hurt or do something they regret later. Whether or not he even seems to understand what's going on, it's often enough to give the person enough pause that they do actually review potential repercussions and sometimes come to different conclusions. And people treat him kind of badly. They come to him for advice or an ear, usually as a last resort. When he says something actually relevant or insightful and they take something from it, suddenly knowing what they need to do, they treat it like an accident because he's too dumb to be able to say anything truly useful. They often don't even bother to thank him and sometimes backhanded-compliment or even insult him as they walk away. He is so genuine, and approaches everything thing they do with so much enthusiasm, and the wins of each person and the group as a whole with an almost contagious joy. And for all that, for as much joy and passion as he puts into every moment of his existence, always wanting to do the next thing, he's the first to realize that he's done. I realize I'm making it sound like he's my favorite character, but I always feel like there is so much depth and good to him that people tend to miss because of his cluelessness and rather slapstick tendencies. I think it's kind of a shame because he really is so important to the show, so I always feel the need to stick up for him.
Thank you for making this video! I recommend The Good Place to everyone and it's become a comfort show for me. There's just something so special about it. When I first watched it, it felt so fresh and different. It still feels that way even now. Also Chidi's wave speech makes me cry every time 😭💙🌊
Oh man. As soon as you hit with that title card music I just got a wave of...not quite nostalgia since it's a fairly recent show. But I was right back there at the time I was first watching it.
1:01:27 Another way to describe it not saying suicid* is voluntary euthanasia which is actually legal in a lot of places! Euthanasia is ending someone's life by peaceful means to end their suffering and it can be done because someone has a terminal or severe physical illness among other reasons. If wikipedia is correct, the term comes from the Greek words "eu"-meaning good and "thanatos"-meaning death, which combined means "well-death" or "dying well" and I feel it fits really well to what The Good Place does. It can be a tricky subject but I think the show handled it really well.
I fully admit that I was a little bored somewhere in the middle of The Good Place, but goddammit, I cry like a baby whenever I think about Jason waiting for Janet and Chidi leaving Eleanor. I just wasn't ready for that kind of emotional impact.
This was the perfect show to binge watch in quarantine. I quickly became obsessed and it’s without a doubt one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. It’s funny, endearing, teaches you a few lessons, and didn’t overstay its welcome. A lot of shows seem to be dragged on by their creators and feel like they’ve run out of ideas, but every episode is vital to this series and it ends perfectly. If you haven’t watched it yet, you are missing out!
Hey Ghost, thank you so much for your video, The Good Place is my comfort show and I completely agree with you, it's not nearly talked about enough. The opening credits little song brings me so much inner peace, I am a sucker for philosophy and ethics and I love Chidi's character so much. I have such a soft spot for Jason, with every rewatch he just gives me more and more to love. The funeral they threw each other is stuck in my brain. Please keep making content, this was so nice and so much work!
Ok i need to rewatch it all for a fourth time now, but i know i will be bawling my eyes out at the finale. Bittersweet is a great description of the ending bur it never fails to make me cry
Im proud to say that i managed to catch this show while it was first airing and didnt have a single thing about any of its 4 seasons spoiled for me, I got to experience every twist and turn completely blind and it was an unforgettable experience, the turn from "this show is really weird" to holy shirtballs "this show is brilliant" hit so much harder when you're not expecting it. The ending is probably my favorite ending of anything I've ever seen, it was one of the few times i got invested enough to genuinely mourne the show once the last episode ended.
After the first season, I was so scared because I thought for sure they would just follow the formula again and it would get stale. I cannot describe the sheer happiness I experienced when I was wrong.
32:51 That scene was the most effective use of a Cheers! Reference ever! (For the Zoomers: Ted Dansen starred as a bartender in the very long running sitcom Cheers! It's kind of a classic) Ted Dansen back behind a bar. I-conic
I really love this silky little show so much, thank u for such an in-depth recap and honestly for the appreciation that the show deserves. I also have seen myself changing my ways of acting after having watched this show a couple of years ago, not in a "there's a point system that will be better if I pick up street trash" but more in a "we are all in here together, the leats we can do is care for each other" I feel like this show radicalized me in ways I didn't even realized at the moment. And I always find myself looking back on it when things are bad, using it to remember that we are all human and we are all trying our best, in the context that we exist in. I'm so so sorry for the rumble 🥲😹
I recently rewatched this show and was reminded of how amazing it is. Truly one of, if not my favorite show. Micheal is my favorite character. The absolute delight he takes in the small pleasures of life is so lovely to watch and reminds me to romanticize my own life. I really love how Micheal is so fascinated by simple human experiences. It helps me feel so much more excited by my own life. Just one of the reasons why I love that show so much and I really think everyone should give it a watch
I watched this show for the first time just after the fourth season showed up on Netflix. I've been rewatching it lately and what's wild to me is how all of the jokes still land. Some of the jokes are even funnier post-pandemic. It's just sooo gooood!
I love how you ended this video with a brief story of its personal impact on you. I love this show so much! I definitely did think it had a sloggy middle but the overall quality makes up for it. Best ending to any show ever, and best first season, too.
I’ve always loved this show, I discovered it when I was in middle school and it has followed me ever since. I watch it once a year and every time I learn new things and discover something new about the show, it’s simply brilliant. This is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and your video really emphasises everything I liked about the show :) Great video man :) Btw I am now a second year philosophy student and this show is essential to my studies aha :)
Oh man this show Is indeed a masterpiece, My number 1 show ever, I am absolutely certain I'll be rewatching the show with my loved ones later on in my life
TGP was so instrumental during a difficult period of transition in my life. Even though it's years later, I am grateful to have found this video. While I think I have a wildly different takeaway from this series, that only makes me appreciate this video more. thank you for sharing
Thank you for sharing your perspective/passion for this show. I really enjoy long form content when it's a passion project/about something I appreciate and this show, I really, REALLY appreciate. While it does have flaws in places, it still straps a torch to my chest because damn, my eyeballs get sweaty and my heart gets warm, everytime.
Take it sleazy is the best motto for life. Get as much good as you can and if something bad happens, learn from it and don't dwell on your mistakes. I love when anybody talks about this show. So thanks for this stellar analysis.
The Good Place is probably the TV show closest to what a sitcom written by Douglas Adams would look like, and that is probably the best endorsement I have ever given a TV show.
This show changed my life, for the better and it made me fully understand humans, emotions, and the dilemmas of life and made my life better. I will check back when I finish the video.
I get anxiety every holiday and to soothe myself yesterday I reassured myself by telling me that no matter what happened, eventually everyone who knows me will die and everyone who was ever remembered or was influenced by me will die. Helped lol
51:26 Not even Michael, an architect, knew about how no humans went to the good place in 500 years. I guess very few demons knew that. And also I guess Glenn was never assigned to a baby torture department...
I'm convinced I'm missing something because throughout this entire video, I was waiting for you to bring up Chidi and Eleanor's language barrier in season 1, which doesn't exist when they meet in life. You know, in episode 1, Eleanor comments on how good Chidi's English is, and he says he's not speaking English, it's a translation in the good place, clearly implying that he doesn't know English, at least not well. But when they meet after being sent back to earth to be alive, he speaks perfect English, and they communicate the same as before. I refuse to believe I'm the only person who has ever noticed this, so I'm assuming it was addressed at some point? I feel like I'm losing it. Someone else has to know what I'm talking about
Its probably that he’s multilingual, which makes sense. Especially with him moving to Australia, he probably knows English well, considering he speaks it as a kid.
@@looseleaflyra that actually is something I noticed. I just assumed that he spoke multiple languages and that he got better at English before him and Eleanor met in the new timeline which is why I didn’t bring it up
To further the point made at 17:00, when Eleanor is looking through John's file and you can't read any of it - it's actually a cipher that lists a bunch of his actions, for example: - Stole hotel room pen - Looked in hotel room bible for money - No tip left on pillow at checkout - Watched music video on coworker's cell phone after he said he was over his data limit for month
thinking abt how much of an impact this show has had on you reminded me of how i feel the exact same way. Chidi saying that we owe it to each other to be better is constantly on my mind
Subscribing bcz i finally found someone who loves this show as much as I do. like you said i just keep finding myself rewatching the good place. I rewatched it again after like 1,5 years i think and i LOVE THIS SHOWWWWW 😭😭
19:47 No, Sean knew the whole time about the axtra attempts. He was just torturing Michael by making him scramble over and over, trying to hide the failures and fix the scenerio.
@@Uf7f7d6cufihud6dgco that’s a potentially cool theory, but it just doesn’t make sense with all of Michael and Shawn’s interactions throughout the show
me and my brother love this show both watched it separately and we been trying to get my dad to watch it. We say how deep it goes how much philosophy is involved and it makes of sound like such a serious show but we always have to say ITS A COMDEY BUT SO WELL WRITTEN AND PLAYED OUT
only 609 subs? i feel that pain with having my channel for over 16 years and only breaking 500 earlier this year I just subbed, hope you get more subs because good video essays like these need to be rewarded!
I remember the first time I watched this show. I had an hunch and realized just a few moments before Eleanor which made it even more relatable. I have watched it 4 times with different people and there's ALWAYS a new life lesson to be learned. It amazes me how a show led in such a naive way, with walking stereotypes as character, actually convey such deepness By the way, Jason actually say a few very intelligent and amazing things in the course of the show , they make them even more memorable given the nature of this character
HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT ALL THESE EXTRAS ON THE DVDS?? I have the bluray box set but I have admittedly never watched it because I just stream the eps on Netflix when I rewatch but omg I need to watch the discs now!! I had no idea, I’ve even listened to the entire podcast and didn’t realize there was so much extra. I didn’t even know the selection shorts existed 😱😱
@@alewiina if you are a big good place fan I’d definitely recommend watching them. Even if I think the shorter versions of the episodes are better for the most part, watching the extended versions is definitely worth it to see all the cool differences and extended scenes. There are entire sub plots in episodes that were cut for time. You can also watch all the Selection shorts for free on TH-cam
@@theghostwiththemost789 thanks so much! I am a huge The Good Place fan, I’ve probably rewatched it like 20 times by now and I 100% agree with you that it’s the best show I’ve ever seen and it’s genuinely made me become a more thoughtful person. I even have a “Go do something good” sticker on the back of my car (the outro to each podcast episode - I highly recommend the podcast too if you haven’t listened to it!)
I have been craving a long The Good Place video essay with everything in me, and searching one after I finished the show and couldn't find any. I'm ecstatic
25:27 My interpretation of the high council was a member from each Place, thus Shaun would become the leader of the Bad Place as he sits with the leaders of the Good and Neutral Places
I rave about this show every chance I get. I've seen it like maybe 8 or 9 times? I don't think I never not cry at the ending. I make everyone I can watch it if they are willing because I also think it is THE BEST TV SHOW ever

54:00 this line always makes me cry. Every time without fail. For me, this 1 line embodies the reason why this show is such a masterpiece
New long form The Good Place content for me to watch?! Maybe this IS the Good Place
45:57 I think about this scene almost daily. I cried when I first watched it. I truly can’t put into words how much this shows means to me
Ok i need to rewatch it all for a fourth time now, but i know i will be bawling my eyes out at the finale. Bittersweet is a great description of the ending bur it never fails to make me cry
Easily, in my opinion, the best show of all-time, amazing video and I'd love to see this show get more recognition
Take it sleazy. It was nice to reminisce about this fantastic show for and hour
No joke I audibly cheered when I saw this video. No one ever talks about this show enough!
The Good Place is my comfort show, I can’t even count how many times I’ve watched it
If you love The Good Place, you'll love Severance. Definitely something to check out. Both are stellar.
I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF REWATCHING IT WHEN I WATCHED THIS BC I WANTED TO SEE WHAT PPL THOUGHT ON YT AND YOU GOT IT SPOT ON IN THE FIRST 5 SECONDS
maybe im just predictable idk
I always cry when Chidi leaves.
It's kind of a classic)
Ted Dansen back behind a bar. I-conic
I am on my 7-8th full rewatch, I’ve loved it since 2016
I really love this silky little show so much, thank u for such an in-depth recap and honestly for the appreciation that the show deserves.
Just wanna say I loved that you used the shows version of the swears throughout the video. Genuinely made me giggle every time😂
I love how you ended this video with a brief story of its personal impact on you. I love this show so much! I definitely did think it had a sloggy middle but the overall quality makes up for it. Best ending to any show ever, and best first season, too.
Damn underrated channel
Craving frozen yogurt and loving your appreciation of the series. Top knotch❤
I just think kids and pets go to their own heaven or good place automatically 😌
This could actually be true to some extent if Eleanor mentioning Dog Heaven is to be trusted
Damn hour long video about my favorite show of all time, yes please
(Cant watch it rn tho im at work but im putting it in my watch later)
I’ve always loved this show, I discovered it when I was in middle school and it has followed me ever since. I watch it once a year and every time I learn new things and discover something new about the show, it’s simply brilliant.
This is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and your video really emphasises everything I liked about the show :)
Great video man :)
Btw I am now a second year philosophy student and this show is essential to my studies aha :)
I love this show, and I'm glad to see more people discussing it :D
Oh man this show Is indeed a masterpiece, My number 1 show ever, I am absolutely certain I'll be rewatching the show with my loved ones later on in my life
I'm SO jealous of anyone who still gets to watch this for the first time.
Really nice video man, thanks for making this, lovely to see people talk about this show, it’s so incredibly close to perfect
The Good Place is probably the TV show closest to what a sitcom written by Douglas Adams would look like, and that is probably the best endorsement I have ever given a TV show.
bro im so fucking happy u made this, GENUENLY THANK U SM, this is absolutly so underaded and fucking fantastick
This show changed my life, for the better and it made me fully understand humans, emotions, and the dilemmas of life and made my life better. I will check back when I finish the video.
no matter how many times I watch this show, I cry like a baby during the entire finale. its just that good
I get anxiety every holiday and to soothe myself yesterday I reassured myself by telling me that no matter what happened, eventually everyone who knows me will die and everyone who was ever remembered or was influenced by me will die.
Helped lol
this whole video is awesome. but the piss kink question at the end made me holler with laughter! so good.
I just assumed that he spoke multiple languages and that he got better at English before him and Eleanor met in the new timeline which is why I didn’t bring it up
@@theghostwiththemost789 yk that makes sense, glad to know im not the only person who noticed though.
To further the point made at 17:00, when Eleanor is looking through John's file and you can't read any of it - it's actually a cipher that lists a bunch of his actions, for example:
- Stole hotel room pen
- Looked in hotel room bible for money
- No tip left on pillow at checkout
- Watched music video on coworker's cell phone after he said he was over his data limit for month
thinking abt how much of an impact this show has had on you reminded me of how i feel the exact same way.
Great video. I only cried twice, lol. Such a great show
SERIOUSLY. This show is so underrated. Whenever I see video essays none of them actually capture the deep complex aspect of the show
12:40 my guy, this part had my mouth dropped towards the floor. Didn't expect it XD
this is such a nice video! looking forward to more from you
Just finished Rewatching the show for the 4th/5th time after seeing your video and OMG i cried like a baby at the ending, it's SUCH a good show aaaa
Your ending I was also expecting take it sleazy lol
I was so confused as to how it was a good place from the beginning
frozen yogurt was diabolical I'm sorry 😭
I love this show so much and am so happy to see a video essay on it!
Jason is my favourite! He’s truly the one with the most growth and I think you are selling him short.
@@veronicamaine3813 I wasn’t trying to sell him short. I think all of the main characters are fantastic, he’s just my personal least favorite
44:08 Obviously dogs either go to the good boy place or to the ruff place
Kristen Bell is a national treasure and she must be cherished and protected at all costs.
19:47 No, Sean knew the whole time about the axtra attempts. He was just torturing Michael by making him scramble over and over, trying to hide the failures and fix the scenerio.
@@Uf7f7d6cufihud6dgco that’s a potentially cool theory, but it just doesn’t make sense with all of Michael and Shawn’s interactions throughout the show
help ive watched this show multiple times and somehow i never realized that eleanor became the little voice in that guy's head??
this video is a masterpiece. thank you mr ghost for talking about the amazing show
How did I never notice Trevor still floating in the other episodes 😭
me and my brother love this show both watched it separately and we been trying to get my dad to watch it. We say how deep it goes how much philosophy is involved and it makes of sound like such a serious show but we always have to say ITS A COMDEY BUT SO WELL WRITTEN AND PLAYED OUT
only 609 subs?
i feel that pain with having my channel for over 16 years and only breaking 500 earlier this year
I just subbed, hope you get more subs because good video essays like these need to be rewarded!
the twist genuinely blew my mind when i first watched it
Motherforkin shirtballs I can't even listen to description of the finale with turning into a puddle 😭😭😭
my only hang up about the ending was that i would want the option to be reincarnated
Amazing!!!! Keep it up!
I love this show so much, I think about it all the time.
I remember the first time I watched this show. I had an hunch and realized just a few moments before Eleanor which made it even more relatable. I have watched it 4 times with different people and there's ALWAYS a new life lesson to be learned. It amazes me how a show led in such a naive way, with walking stereotypes as character, actually convey such deepness
By the way, Jason actually say a few very intelligent and amazing things in the course of the show , they make them even more memorable given the nature of this character
@@alewiina I haven’t seen the podcast, but it is something I’ve been meaning to listen to eventually
A Man With A Plan is another Schor masterpiece
I really really like this show! And the music is nice :)
It has been four years since I finished the good place. But watching this video had me in tears over the ending again
It's truly a gift to humanity ❤🇨🇦
I have been craving a long The Good Place video essay with everything in me, and searching one after I finished the show and couldn't find any. I'm ecstatic
@@lulubeukes2296 same honestly. There are some but not as many as you would think
25:27 My interpretation of the high council was a member from each Place, thus Shaun would become the leader of the Bad Place as he sits with the leaders of the Good and Neutral Places
Love the timing. I just rewatched the whole show
I rave about this show every chance I get. I've seen it like maybe 8 or 9 times? I don't think I never not cry at the ending. I make everyone I can watch it if they are willing because I also think it is THE BEST TV SHOW ever
