Good morning, everyone. A number of you have asked for / lamented the absence of / specific comparisons to hybrid cameras. But please check the links below, where I do in fact compare earlier versions of this sensor found in the RX10 Mk III and Z150 to the a6300 and FS5! The primary difference between the sensor in the ‘90 & RX10 IV on the one hand and the earlier version in the Z150 & RX10 III is phase detection AF. Please check them out!
I run a food media channel and currently shoot content on the A7S and A7SII, had the Sony VG10 a couple years ago and always wanted to return to the camcorder form factor so I don't have to deal with issues like crappy battery life and limited record times when shooting episodes. This camera piqued my interest but I was unable to find a decent enough review of it until now. Thank you for such an in-depth review of the camera. It's all the information I needed to help me in my decision making process.
Shot gun VS Wide Field View getting into the shot.....and a Light Package does not fit into shoe as the shotgun is higher....so mount the light up, but won't a shadow appear ? See email...
The amazing part is that the AX700 has the same sensor, the same lens the same processor (and but for one codec) produces the same image including HLG for around $1,700. Thats just crazy - cool!
@Arvid Kracht How do you come to that conclusion that it's better? I'm not doubting you, but just wondering if you're just using your eyes, or if you know the mechanisms that are making it a better quality image? Cheers buddy.
I just hope that the Z90s shutter speed can operate independently from the iso. I have a Sony HXR-NX30 and to this day it’s incredible, but man I hate that the iso and shutter speed won’t work independently.
I feel that Canon have taken a step in the right ergonomic direction with the XC10 and XC15, by incorporating a swiveling grip. Traditional camcorder handling meant that the wrist was in a neutral position at or near eye level; but a swiveling grip means being able to achieve comfortable neutral position at any level. I'd love to see a Sony with a similar form factor to the XC10.
I got the Sony Vx-2000 which I think I have had since the late 90's and it gets a lot of respect in the skateboarding industry but it is slowly deteriorating and this thing looks like it would be the ultimate skateboard camera. I love the old school feeling of that top handle while filming runs versus all this new DSLR with handles and phones, etc. Old school is my preference but I need to get what would be the ultimate skate cam to replace my VX-2000 and also the better quality image of course and this looks like the ultimate. Thanks for the awesome info.
You can get an XLR adapter for the AX700. It's not a handle, but it does the job for audio. This could actually be more useful than the handle for the Z90 and NX80 since it is also compatible with the a7 III, etc.
Thank You. I just signed in to say Thank You. I watched the entire video several times over the last 6 months. It's great. I've been shopping and studying for the last year and narrowed it down to the z90 or the xf405. Pretty sure I'm going with the Z90. I watched every videos out there but this was the most compelling from a pro.
I've been using this since Jan 2018. One superb feature: Non stop 120fps at full HD....without cropping. This allows me to film 2 hours plus, and select the key events (accidents) later. Only one problem: It doesn't do in camera editing like my Canons....BTW Nikon has just launched the P1000, (3000mm zoom)....but the sensor is tiny.
CyberEditing Wow - never thought of shooting 120fps the entire time! That will change the look and feel of the footage when (if) slowed to 24fps, but I gather that’s not what you’d do. Do you use other cameras at normal frame rates with it?
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions (chuckle) I deploy a total of up to 30 cams, most of them simple action cams looping from sunrise to sunset at full HD,, 30 fps. Those cams are time synced. They are my slaves, faithfully catching crashes from various angles. It is sad, but a part of human nature to enjoy close up action like this. I try to show why accidents happen, so that others avoid the same mistakes.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable & informative review video to watch and went a long way to cementing the Z90 on the top of my "gear wishlist." The simple & clean production here results in one of the few long-form, single product reviews I've been able to sit through. Well done. I'm subscribing for sure, looking forward to diving into your older vids and the new ones to come.
Nice discussion. I have no need for the multi cam functionality of the z90, but i was seriously looking at the nx80 or canon xf400 for my work. The majority of it is weddings, but i also do a little commercial work. The only reason i haven't pulled the trigger is because of the bad lighting conditions i have to contend with and i like to have that blurry background for some of my shots. I know i can get it by zooming in some, but it may not be possible when i really need it. I get tired of fiddling with lenses and missing moments as a result with my current cameras. Was thinking of getting this and keeping a mirrorless on my shoulder to switch when i need it. I dunno just thinking out loud :)
Hugh, I am very impressed with your unique style of reviewing the Z90! In a short review, you touched on all(?) the salient uses of the little gem. Two of my gurus agree with you. I have been eyeing the Z90 since it was born. I am semi-retired now after 30 years of photography and video, I am like a kid at Christmas, expecting a Z90 one way or another. BTW, I just subscribed to your site!
Just started watching this and what do you mean when you say no picture profile around 2:10 seconds. How could it not be on one of the picture profiles. I used to have the z90 and it was incredible. I sold it to get the gh5 and it was a good move but I am missing it and I'm going to get the ax700 and I'm sure you know a very similar unit and good little brother of the z90. But there has to be some kind of pic profile in place doesn't there. It's hard to remember. I took Doug Jensens course but that was 2 years ago. Doug is the best and I enjoyed you interview with him. I've studied with him a lot and he's as good as they get.
I just picked this camera up in March and I am more than pleased with it. There is a bit of a learning curb , but like you stated in your video, dedicated camcorder videographers take the time to figure it out and keep going without complaining. I come from a news back ground and while the Dslr/mirrorless cameras produce great images they just plain suck for my work flow. This camera came highly recommended by a former news shooter turn B&H salesman. I was very hesitant at first but I decided to give it a try because of some reviews and the price of course. I can tell you that It was a very good pick up. I think if more mirroless/dslr shooters try this camera more than a few will be converted. Unlike those cameras this little baby has nearly everything you need in a package that is not much bigger , maybe even smaller once you rig those other units out.
All great points! The Z90 and NX80 are the two highest image quality and ergonomics "bank for the buck" that the industry has today. For the money,...it's VERY much worth every penny and more. You gotta love that Sony 5K+ sensor full pixel readout and 4k scaling. It's detail,...detail,...D E T A I L galore!!!
I am looking for an adapter for the hot shoe mount on the z90 so i can fir a non sony light or other accessories. Can you help me as to where i can get this, even the official name
Just bought this camera two weeks ago and I'm very happy coming from the sony x70 that is its predecessor. I've owned a BMPC 4K too and I can tell I have a good point of comparisson speaking of quality image and the z90 is amazing. For the depth of field there are a few tweks you can do with the built-in nd filters and playing around with zoom and light if you know how to do it so thtat's not a problem. Maybe this is the perfect documentary camera or promotional web video camera aside of course its broadcast capabilities. Thanks for your review it was very helpful for me!
My ideal camera: ergonomics and video&audio capabilities from Panasonic, video autofocus from canon, fullframe foto capabilities from Nikon, eye-focus from Sony, run&gun features from Sony camcorders, lenses and special features like light-painting from Olympus, menu from Blackmagic. Where can i get this?
@@brandonor yes, I hope this is good decision hahaha 28mm field of view is not the best ;) I will need to buy gorilla 3k tripod to do wide shoots, but... I love this zoom, quality, and normal covered lens (not like in sony zv-1). But to be honest with you, I start to missing my m50 and 11-22 lens ;) but... there is no good zoom lens for M system.
My wife watched your video with me. She had no idea what you were talking about, only willing to listen to "this guy's sexy voice" even though I'm pissed, I gave it a like.
@@3BMEP I just purchased this camera as I venture into video. I've been watching a ton of videos about its features. By FAR, he has the sexist voice. Also, I only understood 1/3 of what he was talking about. I might get a glass of wine and watch it again. lol
Another terrific gear review which, as always, is about more than just the gear. You touched on many different subjects here - of course. But you really got my attention with the rant, I mean critical analysis, of the user experience. I have an a7mk3 and an FS5. Yes, the FS5 delivers great image quality and there's the variable ND filter, and blah blah blah and even though I bought the camera with the intent of shooting in 4K - I really like the image quality in 1080p HD - rendered in a 10 bit 4:2:2 color space. But what I hate - is actually using the camera. Even with all the buttons and dials - the camera is still unintuitive and frustrating and really lousy for use on the fly - unless, of course, you simply opt for the AUTO button - which I never do because I don't like the way it exposes. When face detection is activated - and I almost always use it - you LOSE ACCESS TO MANUAL CONTROLS. This is insane. My workaround is to hit the rocker zoom - which - hey - deactivates the face detection and allows for access to the settings. How staggeringly stupid this is!. The other work-around is to deactivate the autofocus - an even more horrendous choice. Then there's the stunningly lousy EVF and LCD. I mean, Wow - they are from another era. And I could go on. But I won't Better to re-reference your video. The FS5 should be the perfect run and gun camera. But it's not. I've been taking the hybrid A7mk3 everywhere instead. I know exactly where the shutter, aperture, and ISO dials are - face detection (and eye AF) stay intact - it's easy to carry around and something close to a pleasure to use - most of the time. And I really do like the image quality I'm getting. A lot. 8 bit and 4:2:0 meaning less than nothing to me in the context in which it's used and displayed. The question for me is: what does a future upgrade purchase look like? Is it the FS5mk2? Well, of course it isn't. There needs to be some joy in the experience of capturing footage - I need to not have to worry - in fact, not have to THINK - to use the camera well and enjoy the experience. As of now - I have no intention of buying another Sony camcorder until they completely revamp the menus and dials, and functionality of the camera. I eagerly await the a7Smk3, and I hope SONY doesn't blow that.
another marvellous instalment Hugh! PS, I remember a conversation I had with a Sony Stills manager at the SMPTE..letting off my steam with regards to 'consumer'-UX and artificial feature limitations in the Alpha line. He was on the same stall as the 'Pro-video' guy. But he had no compellings answers. I really felt sorry for the guy. The silo departmental culture of Sony was so obvious, and imo it's the biggest problem holding itself back, apart from not listening to its dedicated professional user base. Waiting for A7S3..
We have an NX80. Audio menu rubbish, On board microphone not adjustable without digging in to menu, Menus leading nowhere, We have a Panasonic HXC 1000 and the menu is so much simpler and looking at the upgrade HCX1. Having said all that I was totally blown away by the picture quality even though no offer of 50/60p unlike the panny
One other very irritating feature is the battery life, in my case I found it woefully short on time as opposed to the panny which can last me ALL day. I was figuring out the menus one day and was left with 50% battery left after about half hour use...... Thee machine never recharges the battery to 100 pc state so I bought a separate duel charger only to find that also does not charge up to 100 pc but does slightly better then cam charging. Just my observations.
Great video and review. Not only Sony but all brands should design the camera the way cameramen want to operate, and they should experience/use the camera after they produce it to see how effective it is. I am not sure if the engineers who designed the menu system ever try to use the camera in a practical way :)
You mention the NX-80 at the end of your video if you don't need SDI FTP or another feature. Are these the only differences between the NX80 and Z90? I don't need these features either and the price of the NX80 is a lot lower so would the NX80 do everything else that the Z90 would? Thanks and GREAT videos!!
I was hesitant to start watching a 30min product review video but I'm glad I did. It's actually very good. I'm glad you addressed the ergonomics issues as it seems to be the one thing camera manufacturers don't get or don't want to get, at least on lower end cameras. Why the zoom-focus selector switch at the place where camera operators are used to find the ND filter switch? Why the zoom-focus selector switch rather than two rings? In truth, who needs to use zoom via ring on this type of camera at all, if the rocker switch is well designed and works right? It's almost as if they take sick pleasure in shortening the lives of camera people with shitty ergonomics :/ Anyway, subscribed :)
Your videos are always thought provoking so thank you. I am always frustrated by the lack of attention companies pay to the needs of their consumers. I want to spit nails every time I launch FCP X. I recently by chance have started filming live events, interviews, lectures and salon type venues and although I love the video quality of my 5d IV there were just too many negatives with the record time limit and I was not prepared to buy another manufacturer GH5 and lens combo and still not have everything I wanted. I looked around at what Canon had to offer and my friend who works at ABELCINE recommended the XF400. It only took me a few minutes with the camera, the poor LCD and the ridiculous interface to realize that I could never use it and make it work. I spent the next 24hrs doing tons of research and then went to B&H where the Z90 jumped out at me among about 30 or 40 cameras that they had going live on display. Just 30 minutes with the sales rep was all I needed to realize that it would do everything I needed it to and more. That combined with the very reasonable 4k 60mbps codec made me pull the trigger and know that I could just leave that on permanently. While it is no where near the beauty of footage I can get out of the 5d, it seems like a perfect choice for my needs. I will post an update after using the camera for a few weeks. Bob
Thank you for this review..3 yrs later is there an update to this camera model? I need something this small .. particularly something that manages low light decently.
What about the JVC GY-LS300? Wouldn't that be a good option? Super 35 sensor, built-in ND filters, Micro Four Thirds mount (with Variable Scan Mapping to compensate for the few Micro Four Thirds lenses that don't cover the full sensor), includes streaming and XLR inputs.
Your commentary has me sold. ..the price of the camcorder does not. $2500 for a camcorder with what it has would make recording the street bullfights in the Azores amazing. But I would have that cost of a camera on me ALL THE TIME. I can't leave it laying around with such an investment.
very nice Camera then.... But; in this days, more and more people filming with cameras like a a6500, X-T2, GH5, 7D2, A7R3; and so on. While this also can do Log Profiles (yes external...) have good sharpness and good lowlight capabilitys, i can hardly see that videocameras still made (at least for ordinary use)...
Well it's all about your needs. I own a gh5 and a gh4 but I'm thinking off pulling the trigger on the z90 for some run n gun work and use the dslr's for a more artistic look where I have time to light up the scene. Also i think the zoom on these cameras are really useful because sometimes we don't have time swapping lenses mid shoot. Also the xlr's are horrid on dslr's
Yeap it is, but i get your point, those small cameras are really killing it, but in my opinion still bigger is better. Don't forget the build it nd's the amazing AF the brilliant iq and somwhat okish 4k quality. The only downside is the final image, don't know if you can really get the cine look with z90.
Great review. If you're not streaming live events would you say the NX-80 is a better buy? I'm just curious if the image quality between the NX-80 and Z90 is significant. Thanks!
Fantastic review. Congratulations. I have been using underwater for underwater cinema for more than two years, this fabulous camera with the magnificent GATES Z 90 case. I've done a lot of in-depth studies filming in HDR HLG with it and it's absolutely fascinating. Thanks for your research.
So, hold that thought, I'm still digesting how this 1 in sensor is showing up so many places. I use an AX100, that's good enough for me, but to see how the sensor and features have improved to these AX700/NX80/Z90 ... well, lets think how the Rx 0, 10 (3-4), 100 (4-6) could be used in conjunction. What a marvelous ecosystem, even down to the ability to add XLR inputs via Mi hotshoe... you need to pause and reflect on the whole thing. It is a thing of beauty and it's no shrinking violet...
I agree, I really am excited about the future of 1" sensors and all the benefits that come with it. Fun thing for video shooters is that 1" is about a crop factor of 2.7, close to Super 16 film (I think thats 2.9?) which nobody would say is a bad look for video. I've used my old RX10 mk2 more than any other camera because it just the job and looks great at 200mm f2.8. I just wish that I could get the mk2 with PDAF, because AF is almost useless.
So now that it’s been a year and the NX80/AX700 are at the top of my list (and the AX700 does 1080p60 just in a different format. What’s the verdict? As it only records 2 channel audio (rather than 4) I’m struggling to justify the $400 price bump from the 700 to the 80 for just the Handle XLR and ustream when as you well said TH-cam streaming over OBS on a laptop is more likely my thing (a hobbyist). If it recorded 4 channel audio the handle is worth it but at present I’ll record XLR audio separately and use the onboard 2 channels for the camera Mike surround audio or a small show 3.5mm Rhode Mike. What am I missing to justify not just getting the AX700?
Thank you for this great review. I consider to get this camera since years. I own the X70 but would like to update for my work as a tv reporter. The Z90 is great but do you think there will be a follower soon? I am just afraid a newer version might com out after i purchase this one. I would use it for TV-work and experienced that the Z150 is much better when I downgrade the footage from 4k.
I have been debating moving from my Panasonic G9 and moving to the Sony nx80/ax700 for video. I like shooting wildlife stuff (birds) and I think it would be better as a all around video machine. Autofocus is a big thing for me. Whats the answer???
Whatever camera you used to shoot this has very attractive rendering-hair and skin texture look especially natural which is very hard to get right on video. Did you shoot this with your GH5 or the Sony? If it was the GH5, which lens did you use, I need to get one for my interviews because my clients would love the look that this lens delivers.
Well, if you don't have a life partner, get ready because when people see how good you look in this video, there's going to be a line of suitors at your door a mile long.
Great sounding video! Would you mind sharing with me your EQ and compression settings? What lights do you use? I love the look and feel of your videos.
Thanks for the kind words. I don't do anything special in either regard. These days, I use the default settings of the built-in Compressor of FCPX and use izotope RX7 Advanced for clean-up. We do list the gear we use in the show notes, if that's of any help.
@@3BMEP It took me about a minute from the start to find the voice intelligible. Too much low end. It's screams, "I'm on a microphone" instead of just reproducing a natural voice and with the rapid intro pace, I didn't catch any of that introductory information, i.e. before the actual review of the camera began. BTW, that's not unique for TH-camrs. If something matters, say it clearly like it matters. BTW, I loved hearing that opinion "Who cares. You got the shot. Move on." I lost count of how many times I was thanked after years of events, just for being the person there that was capturing the moments for the participants enough that they could say they were a part of it. That's how I learned to just be there with what you've got and make people happier.
This has been a very interesting monologue, I use a Sony FDR AX700 and after bothering to use a very good set of tutorials found my way around the camera very well. While I do my own post in a novel way, after setting up profile 10 with HLG, sharpened the profile and a number of other adjustments, the output is so good that the main reason for doing any post on it is to reduce the bitrate for TH-cam. I don't want the handle on the top as the shoe mount happily handles a Rode mike or a light for close range. The ND filters are very good and with a bit of practice you can shoot hundreds of clips with no stuff ups.
That's a perfect application for a camera like this. You should keep in mind that you won't get as shallow depth of field on the Z90 due to the smaller sensor, so if you're expecting your footage to match up perfectly, it won't. If that is irrelevant to you, then for everything else, it would make perfect sense as a B cam for the FS7.
Oh man, fantastic! You reviewed this camera, I had one for about a month, ergonomics wise It wasn't a match for me. But regardless, flawless video as always.
This is a GREAT review!!! I love the way you list the attributes and the deficits all together, by subject. Best review I've seen yet! I'm wrestling between an NX-80 and a FS-5. Price is my main concern, portability next. I shoot outdoor, mostly video of trains. I've shot with a Sony CX-900 since 2014 and love it. the Z90/NX80 are basically the same form factor as the 900 with vast imaging improvements, from what I've read and seen. (Also, refreshing to see a TH-camr that doesn't open with "What's up guys?" Ha!)
If price and portability are your main concerns, then the NX80 is the clear winner. It's cheaper and smaller. It also has image stabilization for run-and-gun shooting. The FS5 is more of a cinematic camera. But, since you shoot outdoors, you might appreciate the variable ND filter. The NX80 just has a clickable ND filter.
Hugh...I dare say it does better at high ISOs than even m4/3...I've shot the rx10IV at 6400 and it surprised me at how rich and colorful it was, even at that high ISO...
Yes thumbs up and yes subscribed and yes ordered the camera. Excellent review thank you! I will also explore the 1,000 fps on a hummingbird as I think having such a compact camera is going to be a gamechanger. Hold your breath for my review
This camera is great, but i have a lot of image colour noise that it's hard even in DaVinci to get rid off. Your video looks very clean, I don't know what I can do to fix this issue. I also owned the Sony X70 which seems less noisy.
@@3BMEP The greatest color noise is on some landscape shots (forest, grass) - there is a lot of green noise, shot at dawn, with 3,6dB. But also in daylight the shadows look junk compared with X-70. I use a picture profile recommended by Doug Jansen (Vortex Media).
Have used the Panasonic AG-UX180 and the accuracy of the colors on the lcd is not accurate. also, the user interface is not as easy as Sony's in comparison. :)
Can I ask you, whit a 2000 euro budget witch is the best cameras for a documentary film. I would like to have natural color a good image quality, but the most important things it's to have a good ergonomic, i thought about pxw 70 or gh5 or canon xf400 ,or sony nx100 what do you think ??? Thanks a lot
We chose the GH5, but then you have the cost and weight of glass. Tough to beat the ‘5 with Sigma’s 1.8 zoom pair plus Speedbooster, though in fact we use primes.
I love the skin tones on this video, can you tell me which picture profile you used for it please? I'm trying to match the colour profiles of the NX80 and the Sony A7s2 to get as a close a match as possible in-camera. Any suggestions would be fantastic.
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions So would you recommend using it without any picture profile if you want to edit without grading? I’m pairing it with a Sony A7S2 for long conference workshop filming where the finished edits are nearly 2 hours long so I want to match the colours as well as possible in camera to avoid 12 hour render times!😀
Great article as usual Hugh. I would really like to see a review on the picture quality difference between the a700/NX80/Z90 vs the a6000 (1080p) and a6300 or 6500 1080 & 4k modes. No one seems to do comparisons between the traditional video cameras and these mirroless or DSLR camera's. I mostly dabble in event video work and have an a6000 and would like my next to be a 4k capable camera. I'm steering towards the camcorder, but need to see a comparison in different lighting conditions, indoor and outdoor. Perhaps you might be in a position to do such a comparison. Thanks
Mervyn Jack Check out our reviews to which I provide links below, where I do just that. You’ll find, for example, that the RX10 Mk III (same one “ sensor, sans Phase detection hybrid AF, as in the Z90) has less rolling shutter than the a6300 AND FS5, whereas the FS5 has fewer artifacts than either of them when shooting moving vehicles at night. There’s more, so check ‘em out!
Loved your long form rant on this camera. Very informative and entertaining. You have a great and unique style. Only surprise you did not compare to a6500 or other Sony mirrorless cameras, but not really sure if it was needed. Thanks.
Chuck Braverman Hey, Chuck! So glad you liked it! And I DO compare - check out the other videos I reference down below (or up above right corner where the little “I” shows up). I refer to my previous experience reviewing other cameras including the a6300 and FS5. Inference is a wonderful thing. :)
Sir actually I'm a professional photo and video grapher....also im a album and film maker...plz suggest sir which camera is suitable for me....for video ..nikon d500, or sony z90...pllz replay sir.....in occasion of filming and weeding...which is so useful cam?
I don't know the D500, and though I'm not a fan of using DSLRs for video anymore, it will allow you shallower depth of field than the Z90 -- if you pony up for the lenses to go with it.
Can we please talk about the growing number of TH-camrs now in this “pro-Sony” review loop. What gets me is that yes, every Sony release has the best features and specs around, but a lot of the time they’re just adding the things that the customers were asking for, without respect for designing it right. Which sucks.
Great video...”game changer”...unless you want to add an external mic...unless you want to change a simple process through the menu....unless you want to livestream ......unless you want to pick up the camera and shoot...games changer, Fortnight to Go fish...hmmmm..and please say hey to your crazier brother Michael Fremer😁😁😁
[CHRIS] Hugh, love and watch pretty much all of your videos. But I have to say that the stills grabs looked pretty bad, and even this TH-cam video shot on the Z90 looked...underwhelming, which is putting it nicely. Almost soft or blurry. Am I crazy here?
Two Bit da Vinci I can’t judge that :) But I can tell you what I see in my screen here in the bat cave. Some might call it artificially sharp; but one can always tone that down if desired. Colors pop without being off. I find that colors and IQ can change dramatically from one display to the next - I always view the final cut on a 42” plasma and a 55” LED TVs, and have given up trying to grade for anything other than my 5K Retina.
Still thinking about getting the Sony z90 but it's been out for like 4 years now close to four years shouldn't there be another one taking his place really soon I don't want to buy it and then have something better come out and then I won't be able to have to get the new one can you please tell me if there's anything new coming out that I should wait around for and the thing is with the handle getting into the shot this is the first I've heard of it well I heard something about the the lens case you know where it's at if you use the infrared like it you have to take off the lens cap button or whatever it is and now the handle gets in the way of some shots now I'm not so sure about what I'm doing what do you think
It would be great if someone came up with a built-in (or at least permanently attached), retractable shoulder mount for a camera like this. I know there are rigs you can attach, but having one on the camera at all times just speeds everything up. For event work, I would definitely rather use this than a hybrid.
This video camera SONY is my dream, which will improve the quality of video content. Please tell me what your price is on the secondary market, as my budget is very limited. Although there is a war in Ukraine now and the priorities for life and help are completely different, there is still a desire to do something, and I want to improve the quality of video content.

Have you ever thought of doing books on tape? 😉
If Jeff Goldblum became a cinematographer
HA...thats what I thought Immediately.....
Sent two emails....
Shot gun VS Wide Field View getting into the shot.....and a Light Package does not fit into shoe as the shotgun is higher....so mount the light up, but won't a shadow appear ? See email...
lol. .I was about to say. .Jeff Goldblum vibes.
The amazing part is that the AX700 has the same sensor, the same lens the same processor (and but for one codec) produces the same image including HLG for around $1,700. Thats just crazy - cool!
Arvid Kracht Agreed. The Z90 is a beauty beast. The menus are crap. But thats to be expected from a Sony.
@Arvid Kracht How do you come to that conclusion that it's better? I'm not doubting you, but just wondering if you're just using your eyes, or if you know the mechanisms that are making it a better quality image? Cheers buddy.
@@TEAMAGEPRODUCTIONS Z90 has 4:2:2 Chroma subsampling vs 4:2:0 chroma of the other two.
Tom Riccobono Thanks, Tom - glad to be of service. 😊
Michael Turner hybrid+dedicated cam sounds like the ticket.
Dan Gunn Welcome to the community!
Kirk Wardy Thanks for your take!

CyberEditing Whoa!
Panasonic HC-VX1 4K is the cats meow. Totally rocks. Crisp 4k and best of all fantastic audio.
Cliff Totten hi, Cliff!
Now this is what i call an intelligent review.. amazing!! one of the best i ever seen in the 55 years i've been alive.
Joe Bodego welcome to the community!
thank you, just bought the z90 2 days ago and i must admit its daunting but with guys like you, it makes it easy
I sent back a7 iii, and now I waiting for FDRAX700 (cheapest z90), reason ? weak stabilization in a7 iii, and I don't want to use gimbal
are you happy with the decision?
@@brandonor I changed camera multi times :P but yesterday bought ax700 again, but now with waaaaay more better price :)
@@KikoPL so ax700 after all
@@brandonor yes, I hope this is good decision hahaha 28mm field of view is not the best ;) I will need to buy gorilla 3k tripod to do wide shoots, but...
Vintage Rider 😉
@@3BMEP I just purchased this camera as I venture into video. I've been watching a ton of videos about its features. By FAR, he has the sexist voice. Also, I only understood 1/3 of what he was talking about. I might get a glass of wine and watch it again. lol
I watched this while researching a possible NX80 purchase. What a great insight, beautifully delivered. Thank you so much.
garry sheils photography I appreciate your encouragement - thanks!
VIDJACK and as always, I appreciate and enjoy your contributions here!
another marvellous instalment Hugh! Waiting for A7S3..
grafpez It will be interesting to see if Canon and Nikon step up enough to change Sony’s calculus.
You'd think the Panasonic example should be enough to rattle the cage..unless you're a snake in winter laying dormant ;-)
I'm saving up for a z90. It's been a long time to upgrade from my a58. Thanks for the video sir! Hopefully I dont miss my old lenses
DigitalCreations2012 Thanks for contributing to the conversation! Please keep me posted.
It's almost as if they take sick pleasure in shortening the lives of camera people with shitty ergonomics :/ Anyway, subscribed :)
welcome!
Bob
Bob Hanuman Lookong forward to it!
Great review. I am considering moving from a Pany AG-DVX-200. Thoughts? Also, importing into FCP. Problems?
Which model is good Sony PXW Z150 or PXWZ 90
wich is best Z90 or Z150 ? i dont understand purfect english pls guide
very nice Camera then....
Bachmann Manuel Agreed......but for specialist sports events, this is perfect.
Agree to you too. I just think for most video shooters there are better options. thnx for reply
Agree, for "run n' gun" the z90 is a very nice option.
So I just got my z90, going through the menu I'm noticing that there isn't a Full Manual Mode. Am I missing something?
Great review. If you're not streaming live events would you say the NX-80 is a better buy? I'm just curious if the image quality between the NX-80 and Z90 is significant. Thanks!
Yes, I would. 😊
I’m confused the ax700 shoots progressive and interlaced.
Well said, sir!
Josh Mossman the Mk II with PDAF is called the Mk IV. :)
Mr. Tommy Badger Z90!
Well, if you don't have a life partner, get ready because when people see how good you look in this video, there's going to be a line of suitors at your door a mile long.
Can you tell me which picture profile you used please? I have bought this camera and want to match the profile to my A7s2
Thanks for contributing to the conversation!
You will have to do more of these videos, I am not sure if its the New York accent or the content but this was very easy to watch.
Would you suggest Panasonic AG-UX90 or Sony FDR-AX700?
The Z150 does do HLG HDR with the 2.0 firmware update.
Once again, another fantastic informative video. Do you think the Z90 would make a good "B" camera to my FS7?
Chris Bishop absolutely.
Daniel Dougan just so!

Thanks guys. Just seems ideal even if dof isn't as deep. AF seems excellent too 👍
". . but you know, I couldn´t care less . . " (concerning rolling shutter). I totally agree.
Oh man, fantastic! You reviewed this camera, I had one for about a month, ergonomics wise It wasn't a match for me. But regardless, flawless video as always.
Compare it to the FZ2500, umlimited time 4kp30 capture, external MIC support
Very much like the RX10 III!
Hugh...this is an amazing camcorder...the NDs make it EXTRA special...and I couldn't agree more about that 1" sensor...stuns me how good it looks...
Paul Gero Right?
Hugh...I dare say it does better at high ISOs than even m4/3...I've shot the rx10IV at 6400 and it surprised me at how rich and colorful it was, even at that high ISO...
You should do a test, Paul! I already sent the z90 back. :(
So, RX10mk4 or the FDR x700 ? same max zoom range , 4k stills that are more than usable a hard choice realty
Where's the MJ pulsation place?
Yes thumbs up and yes subscribed and yes ordered the camera. Excellent review thank you! I will also explore the 1,000 fps on a hummingbird as I think having such a compact camera is going to be a gamechanger. Hold your breath for my review
This camera is great, but i have a lot of image colour noise that it's hard even in DaVinci to get rid off. Your video looks very clean, I don't know what I can do to fix this issue. I also owned the Sony X70 which seems less noisy.
What do you shoot?
@@3BMEP The greatest color noise is on some landscape shots (forest, grass) - there is a lot of green noise, shot at dawn, with 3,6dB. But also in daylight the shadows look junk compared with X-70. I use a picture profile recommended by Doug Jansen (Vortex Media).
Have used the Panasonic AG-UX180 and the accuracy of the colors on the lcd is not accurate. also, the user interface is not as easy as Sony's in comparison. :)
One Minute Creatives Good input, thank you!
Can I ask you, whit a 2000 euro budget
witch is the best cameras for a documentary film.
I would like to have natural color a good image quality,
but the most important things it's to have a good ergonomic, i thought about pxw 70 or gh5 or canon xf400 ,or sony nx100 what do you think ???
Thanks a lot
We chose the GH5, but then you have the cost and weight of glass. Tough to beat the ‘5 with Sigma’s 1.8 zoom pair plus Speedbooster, though in fact we use primes.
I love the skin tones on this video, can you tell me which picture profile you used for it please? I'm trying to match the colour profiles of the NX80 and the Sony A7s2 to get as a close a match as possible in-camera. Any suggestions would be fantastic.
Sean Conroy none! 😊
Do you like the Sony Z90 over the Sony Z150?
henryssurfshowcase so close! Minor differences very much a personal choice.
If you could choose 1 camera indoor stage lighting, Sony Z150 or Panasonic GH5?
I wonder what will replace the Sony z90
From Sony
Fantastic breakdown of the pros and cons.
Thank you for such a thorough review
🙏🏻😊
Thanx for a great video! I'm considering this cam for a multicam livestreaming of events in a party with a7III. Can it be color matched?
Should I get the z190 or z280?
Does the color science match the a7iii?
Salute sir.... Great content... greater voice.... greatest explination about Sony z90..

how long can the sony Z90 record for? sadly the DSLR I have stops at about 30 minutes.
dinoatcharterdotnet You can go until your 2 SD‘s are filled, theoretically forever.
Would you recommend this camera over the Z150 for live streaming? , We mostly live stream in low light conditions or extremely sunny .
Nick Taylor They’re close. It’s the details, but which ones matter are up to you. For what we do, I’d look first and hardest at the ‘80.
@@3BMEP sometimes I have distances to contend with , so I would want sdi out . But my major concern is low light & zoom .
Nick Taylor they are comparable, and both offer SDI out (the 150 and 90).
You helped me make up my mind! I'm getting a new pro cellphone. Brilliant review! Completely enjoyed the entire video.
Thank you.
Glad to be of service. :)
Doug is great! He’d know better than I.

@@3BMEP please let me know when you do
Sir actually I'm a professional photo and video grapher....also im a album and film maker...plz suggest sir which camera is suitable for me....for video ..nikon d500, or sony z90...pllz replay sir.....in occasion of filming and weeding...which is so useful cam?
I don't know the D500, and though I'm not a fan of using DSLRs for video anymore, it will allow you shallower depth of field than the Z90 -- if you pony up for the lenses to go with it.
Can we please talk about the growing number of TH-camrs now in this “pro-Sony” review loop. What gets me is that yes, every Sony release has the best features and specs around, but a lot of the time they’re just adding the things that the customers were asking for, without respect for designing it right. Which sucks.
@OLDSKOOL978 what's Sony family members..?
Gday
Great review
Have you considered using Linux instead of MacOSX for your video/footage editing ?
charlie brownau No. FCPX gives me what I need. You?
Great video...”game changer”...unless you want to add an external mic...unless you want to change a simple process through the menu....unless you want to livestream ......unless you want to pick up the camera and shoot...games changer, Fortnight to Go fish...hmmmm..and please say hey to your crazier brother Michael Fremer😁😁😁
good on ya Hugh, I'm happy with my NX-80, very!
Enjoy!
Well done. Thought-provoking and insightful. Thoroughly enjoyed your discussion.
Contemplating very much getting one of these, thanks for the review
Stewart Marsden my pleasure!
Im glad you pointed out the little naggy issues - i guess like everything, you need to learn how to drive it, ultimately it looks awesome
well stated. thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am a satisfied subscriber. thumbs up.
Which camera and mic did you use for this review video?
Gurmeet Singh see show notes below video!
Do you think the Sony AX700 is on par with the Z90?
[CHRIS] Hugh, love and watch pretty much all of your videos. But I have to say that the stills grabs looked pretty bad, and even this TH-cam video shot on the Z90 looked...underwhelming, which is putting it nicely. Almost soft or blurry. Am I crazy here?
Two Bit da Vinci I can’t judge that :) But I can tell you what I see in my screen here in the bat cave. Some might call it artificially sharp; but one can always tone that down if desired. Colors pop without being off. I find that colors and IQ can change dramatically from one display to the next - I always view the final cut on a 42” plasma and a 55” LED TVs, and have given up trying to grade for anything other than my 5K Retina.
and what was this Video Filmed with ??
Marco DiBenedetto We always tell you in the show notes below the vid!
Doug Jensen has a fantastic 5hr course for this camera on Vimeo.
Agreed! Doug is great! Did you see our conversation up at Maine Media?

Thanks Jeff Goldberg. Seriously though great video
It would be great if someone came up with a built-in (or at least permanently attached), retractable shoulder mount for a camera like this. I know there are rigs you can attach, but having one on the camera at all times just speeds everything up.
For event work, I would definitely rather use this than a hybrid.
Daniel Dougan Great idea!
I'd really love something like that on my hybrid camera.
Of course, one issue with that is the mostly fixed placement of the viewfinder. It's definitely not conducive to shoulder use.
Hugh, you are so right with your review!
Eddythemadmechanic So happy you liked it!
