Just paid for a class on this camera yesterday and came across your video today. Learned so much more from your video than what I learned yesterday. Thank you for putting this together.
This is unbelievably helpful, and I'm incredibly grateful for your taking the time to do this. For 30 years I've been shooting with film or with a camcorder form-factor so when I picked up this little Sony sweetheart I was overwhelmed by the myriad of new options. This is exactly what I needed. You rock.
@@Jason_Hermann Your video is over an hour long. Most others intros are 20-25 minutes. That's because you say an extra sentence or two about each item. You give some context and meaning rather than merely identifying what's what. That's why your's are so useful. Question for you: S-Log is a new thing for me. It looks like you're also a FCP user. Do you have anything in your videos about how to treat S-Log footage in Final Cut? Thanks so much.
@@MitchellRoseFilms Hey there, and I do have a video talking about S-Log2 th-cam.com/video/jnn82Fhc4Do/w-d-xo.html , but not Slog 3 which is what this camera is capable of and what I would recommend using... Hi again. I got this camera for a new project I'm working on which has very kinetic camera operating. I had read that the stabilization was first rate. I have to say I'm very disappointed in the stabilization. I just got an iPhone 15 Pro and the stabilization is far superior. Even just walking in a circle around the subject, the a6700 looks like it doesn't even have stabilization turned on. And Active is to overreactive - for this piece, when I move the camera quickly it overcompensates. Very disappointed and I'm probably going to shoot this film on the iPhone.
The stabilization is relative to the size of the sensor, so yes the iPhone has way better "effective" stabilization. You need a gimbal for a real camera like this to get butter smooth footage. @@MitchellRoseFilms I have this one: th-cam.com/video/X0ELPTehTxk/w-d-xo.html
Just curious, did your camera come with instructions? Because mine didn't. I know I can download it online, but I kind of expected a printed manual to be included with a 1700 $ camera... guess not 🙄
Hey guys! This is also my first camera and it just came in today! Very excited to master this damn thing. How has the experience been for you guys so far being that you are all also beginners?? Was it hard to get the hang of? Do you think you should’ve started off with a “more simple” and less advanced camera? (Asking everyone above^^)
I just got one and this is exactly what i needed. Thanks. Camera doesn't come with a manual. Found it online and it's 528 pages of dense copy. It's nuts how manufacturers rely on people like you to do this these days 😎. Super helpful, keep it up.
By far the best tutorial I have come across in the 25+ videos I have gone through in the past week since I bought my camera. Other videos gloss over the mechanics of navigating through a complex web of cascading menus and focus on the purpose and impact of various camera settings. For me, menu navigation was the biggest stumbling block. By offering a set of prescriptive suggestions for different situations, this video also provides a great starting point. Then it point out the impact of individual options to experiment with. Just what I was looking for.
8 years with my A6300 and I was happy. However I now have the A6700 and I am blown away with all great advances. Your "Beginners" guide was so helpful. Thank you for the excellent overview. My challenge is if I can remember more than two of the features. 🥴
Finally a proper how to use guide for beginners with clear and precise information. It is very hard to find a video like this. I've seen some others and they all tell you how you should set up your camera based on what they think it's best. So thank you for not going down that same path.
I’m bet there’s thousands of people like me out there that want to use a good camera, buy one, but just get overwhelmed by the options and (seemingly) complicated process of setting apertures and shutter speeds and ISOs and, on top of that, six million options in the menus! “Can it really be this complicated to take a photo!?” Absolutely super video. Appreciate there’ll always be a certain degree of trial and error for the new user but this video is pitched perfectly for new users like me. I’ve been looking at the RX10 iv but the chap in the shop upsold me to this camera saying “you’d be getting a way better camera for not much more money” with the sigma lens. It weighs loads less and I feel much less intimidated by it so looking forward to getting out and about and shooting! Thanks so much for this video it’s awesome and I’m sure I’ll be watching it a few times as I get to grips with my new toy!
Thanks for the very kind words and congratulations on the new awesome camera! The fact that you can put any lens on the A6700 and the sensor is larger, does make it a lot more powerful than the R10 IV for sure! The true beginner guide video. Very simple for easy to understand, clean tutorial, very organize, very informative and effective step by step technique. My respect to you Sir Jason!! Thank you for this video guide.

On my 3rd view of this amazing video I finally began to soak it in! Also on the 3rd viewing I finally recognized your reference to turn the aperture ring to the A on the lens for it to work Auto with the a6700. So I appreciate your answering that question for me on your Yongnuo video even though I should have seen it here before (a testament to your extreme patience). Bottom line, thanks to you, the a6700 is no longer intimidating. Thank you for all the effort you put into this video❗
This camera is the A7R5 of the aps-c lineup of cameras. Been setting up the camera to shoot bees in action on my shrub. Took a while, made a number of errors, more like not paying attention to my settings. Now this beast locks on bees and tracks them as they dart around. Getting lots of great sharp hits. Surprisingly the lens I am using for this task is the 90mm 2.8 macro lens. Not only is it fast in focusing, but it is also razor sharp. It makes the a6700 sensor shine even more. I think as people get used to the tiny body, they will appreciate not having to lug a heavy FF body around. It is so small that people will not notice it, allowing you to take pictures with no one noticing.
Bought this camera with a nice starker kit yesterday. As someone new to photo (and my interest: videography) all the options are quite overwhelming. Thank you for taking the time to record this. You explain it all really well, in a nice pace and easy to follow (with some retries ;)). Already feel comfortable handling the different options. Looking forward to advancing to shooting in LOG so I can nicely combine the Sony footage with my drone's footage. You have yourself a new follower!

Jay, I purchased my a6700 today and it will be delivered on Sunday. I shot film for manny years, but it has been 20 years sine then so it will be like my first camera. I found your video today and the information is excellent. I will be using this to set up my new camera when it arrives. Thank you!!
This was awesome!! Just ordered mine and I can't wait for it to arrive. My first "real" camera also. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this.
Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to film this video. You explained everything in detail, which is exactly what I needed. Amazing video!! Thank you again

thank u so much fir this there are a few poeple on utube who actually sells good stuff good knowledge and ur one of them happy too u so into teaching ur audience rather than thiinking abt the duration and views and aal that was very helpfull love from india
Thank you Jason, very informative, maybe a little to much...I was wearing out my finger on the pause button. One question that I am a bit frustrated on. I put the memory card in my computer reader and it only shows the JPEG files, I can not find any video. Can you please tell me what I need to do to have the files show up on the card? Thanks
Oh man that is super exciting! You are going to love it and be sure to check out the other A6700 videos as well if you want to learn more. It's also nice watching the tutorials with the camera in hand so you can pause and fallow along, etc... These new cameras are extremely powerful with overlapping features and so on. All the best, Jay
I am going to be buying this camera and i thoroughly enjoyed what you did here. You have such a great way of explaining features by giving context to them. I think you really have a great talent. I'm subscribed and will watch some of your other videos as well.
One question I have that I couldnt find in your excellent video is using sRGB vs RGB color space setting. What is your recommendation? Thank you in advance.
Excellent video. Just one question (re: 37:25): How do you set the camera *back* to subject tracking mode once you've tapped a spot on the screen and "cancel tracking"? TIA.
Thank you and all you have to do is re-touch the screen on what you want to track and it will re-enable it. You must be in tracking mode though and not touch to focus mode, which is different than tracking.
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks man! I tried doing it that way a bunch of times in animal recognition mode on my cat, but the "tracking cancelled" message remains. The only way I can tell on how to get it out of "tracking cancelled" mode is to turn the camera on and off. I must be doing something wrong???
Interesting... What exactly do you have set for your focus mode, focus area, camera mode, video or photo, etc... Worst case you can try reseting the camera back to factory default.
Jason. Amazing video and so nicely explained. I am planning to buy the A6700 and mostly probably the 15mm f1.4 for talking head videos. Upgrading from shooting with my DJI osmo pocket 3 and Samsung S24 Ultra. Once again thank you for the amazing video. Keep it up.
Fantastic video, very informative. I've permanently added this to my Bookmarks Bar, because I KNOW i'll be referring to this again and again. Thank you!
This was a very helpful video! I really like how you explain things and also remind on important details here and there to ensure it's understood. I have some idea how to take pictures in M mode, but I'm for sure no expert or even close. This video was very good to follow (I'm not a native speaker, but no issue), since I had some idea what you refer too, but not that much.
I bought one today at a photography show as a 16-50 kit, to replace an ageing Lumix. It doesn't come with a charger, or even a charging cable! And as you'd expect, no memory card (but I sweet talked them into including one). You do get a neck strap, and printed manual.
Thanks for this video! Very helpful. Can you take photos without a lens? It's showing a grey screen without it. Working well with the lens attached though.
Hello and yeah a lens is required. The camera will take photos without a lens, but that is because a lot of adapters and manual focus lenses have no electronics in them, so technically the camera does not know if a lens is attached in those cases. Most modern lenses have electronics these days though.
What a brilliant video. I will favorite this because I will need it in a couple of weeks. I currently have a6400 but upgrading to a6700. Lot of similarities between these 2 models but also lot of new features on the a6700 that I will be excited to try out. The new menu layout seems great! Can't wait.
You just earned a Sub... Thank you. I just got mine today, and I am watching this video to get to know my new camera. (even though I have used mirror less cams for quite some time). Awesome work... Thank you
thank you for sharing your knowledge and insight in such a simple and beginner friendly way. its intimidating jumping into this space and you have made it alot easier - THANK YOU.
This is a great video, thank you so much! I just purchased the A6700 and this has been most helpful. I have learned so much from you already. I have book marked this video to refer to again.
Longtime Canon user trying to learn how to do the basics on my new a6700. Just had a breakthrough. The trash can turns touch screen on and off when you are in the photo mode. I haven't watched a lot of the video yet Looking forward to watching the rest of it after my big break through.
Jay, With a7cii there is a movement away from buttons in favor of touch screens. Can and how can you change the screens to fit each person’s style. It would as useful as you foc video
Hello, Customizing the function menu for both photo and video will help a lot with this. I show you where that is towards the end of this video. I will consider making one on that topic though as well, because I made one for the A74 and people seemed to really like it. th-cam.com/video/PA6L7ivrpIM/w-d-xo.html In the meantime that video might give you a few ideas, although a different camera , a lot is still the same...
@@Jason_Hermann As I see it, there are 3 menus to play with. First, the main menu where you van organize your favorite functions (found on A74), second, the function (fn) button and finally, the new screen functions, which seem to be new on the latest cameras. These are the ones that are vertical on the left and right side of the screen. With these you do many thing including shooting. Then there is the other screen with 99% of all necessary functions. My fingers are already getting tired of touching the screen. Am I missing something. I now have an advanced cell phone.
Wow Jason, your videos are Excellent! Such detail and so well explained. Great pace and demonstrations. I first saw your video on the Sony RX10 and now switching to a6700 + Sigma 18-50 f2.8 & Sony 70-350G. Your guidance helps a lot. Also your a6700 Review was awesome. Just wonder does a6700 IBIS work with Sigma 18-50 (with no Stabilisation). Thank You.
Awesome, thank you for the kind words and yes the IBIS definitely works with the Sigma and Active stabilization should also work if you need a little extra digital stabilization as well.
Hi again Jason, Thank you for such a quality explanation of a6700. Superb detail on 'Set up' menu. Can you tell me how to cancel Tracking/ /Auto Tracking? When I touch the screen to change 'Drive mode' - tracking flickers around the screen and Drive mode doesn't open. Ha, it'll be something simple, still getting used to the camera. Thanks again for your inspiring videos. Colin.
Hello Colin, the circle center button inside the rear control wheel will cancel tracking. Often it's easier to go thru the Fn menu than trying to touch the screen for settings I find as well Colin as it does what your describing if you don't touch it perfectly. All the best, Jay
Hi Jay, thank you. That's great, using Fn menu rather than trying to hit the icon accurately on screen. For sure the Menu is quite intuitive when you get used to it. I'll also make use of Custom buttons and My Menu for easy access. My daughter's half Marathon this Weekend, a good time to use the a6700:)! Thanks again. Colin.
excellent video. I may have bit off a bit more than I could chew with purchasing this camera so i appreciate your indepth review. Do you have a video on updating the firmware? I see my firmware needs to be updated.
Hello and thanks :) I did a firmware update tutorial video for the Sony A74 which is basically the same exact process: th-cam.com/video/rT0hCG01H80/w-d-xo.html Firmware Download for the A7C2 is here: www.sony.com/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce-7-series/ilce-7cm2l/software/00301105
I just got this camera as an upgrade to the ZV-1. I'm a disc golfer and am trying to be a big boy and use the manual setting to record round videos. Since I'm alone I have to do all my zooming in post. Filming outside, how do these settings sound for filming 4k/60: ISO as low as I can go, Shutter Speed 1/125, Aperture ~6?
Jason, love the channel! Question, if you could have either (but only 1, not both) would you go with the Sony rx10iv or the A6700/sony 70-350mm/Sigma 17-50mm combo?
Thank you and easily the A6700 and lenses.... You can always buy, barrow, or rent more lenses if you ever wanted to get into portraits or macro for example and get a few killer prime lenses, go manual lenses f/1.4 and stuff like that. The RX10 IV is an incredible all-in-one camera and I would really enjoy having one for my daughters softball games and/or maybe for a vacation/ travel situation for the pure convenience and versatility. Carrying the extra weight is a burden depending on what you are up to, but when push comes to shove I usually want the better quality and the power the mirrorless camera provides with limitless lens options. In addition the A6700 has a way better battery 👍
battery on charge but just got the sony a6700,,,, took few shots in my living room low light .. no card yet ..wow .. its a killer..put the sony 70 350 on full zoom wide open 50 sec auto iso..the zip on my suit case looks nearly macro ...
Good question as the manual does not say for some reason. By default it appears to be the standard focus button meaning it will just enable the center area focus as an over ride when pressed... That is how it is working on my camera anyway 👍
Can you recommend a budget monitor that mounts to the hot shoe of a6700 that we can turn around and use while vlogging? Just want something bigger than the flip out viewfinder - thank you!
I really appreciated this video! Question: Does Subject Recognition in AF work in the Manual mode? My goal is to set slot 1 on the top dial to all the settings I need to film myself in talking head video. That means I need to put the camera in Manual to plug in the aperture and shutter speed. But will that disable the Subject Recognition? I ask because of that last part in the name "...in AF."
@ happy new year! Still learning here 😅 please forgive me if I wasn’t clear. I’m using a Sigma 18-50 lens. What I want to know is if Subject Recognition will still work of the dial atop the camera is set to M (Manual).
Yes, but the battery must be left in and you need a PD power source for the charger which I have linked in the description area if you are not famalier Jonny 👍
thank you it's super helpful to have this being a beginner noob. the simple explanation helped me absorb more than I thought I could. I was wondering if you would make a video specifically creating settings for indoor outdoor and sports or even video settings at a beginner level using the 123 on the dial. while explaining your thought process on changing the iso/aperture and the shutter speed? it would be insanly helpful.

Ride on Jared and definitely would love to hit the trails with you sometime, because I need to learn how to hit those big drops better ;)
Im picking up this camera tomorrow, and this was great for me to watch. I loved in particular how you explained thefunctnions by examples. I just cant wait to get my hands on it😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video man.. Just bought this camera.... Learned a lot from this vid
again this is a free tutorial best ever for 6700, very clear the language and simulations
Jay, I purchased my a6700 today and it will be delivered on Sunday. I shot film for manny years, but it has been 20 years sine then so it will be like my first camera. I found your video today and the information is excellent. I will be using this to set up my new camera when it arrives. Thank you!!
Awesome to hear and enjoy your new incredible camera David :)
Thank you for all of your hard work creating these videos. They are beyond helpful, you do a great job!!! Thank you very much
This was awesome!! Just ordered mine and I can't wait for it to arrive. My first "real" camera also. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this.
This is the best guide video I've ever seen
Thank you a lot! This is perfect guide for me because I've just bought this camera and have no experiance with photo camera.
Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to film this video. You explained everything in detail, which is exactly what I needed. Amazing video!! Thank you again
Hvala!
My first camera. Absolutely amazing video to get me started. Very thorough. Exactly what I was looking for. Followed you as you went with mine in my hands.
Awesome! 👍
Incredible helpful and in depth. I haven’t finished watching it all yet but it has been helpful so far!
Just watched this video right after receiving my new a6700. Super in-depth guide, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
This might be my first real camera and you just got a new sub. Thx!

Thanks
Yeah, they are in a different folder.... see here: th-cam.com/video/kv8HYCYGyTw/w-d-xo.html
@@Jason_HermannThank you Jason, "You da man"!
I need to showing this video because important to me how to handle the new camera sony thank you Sir ♥️ and Im so glad to see your tutorial 💞
Amazing video! Very helpful. My 6700 is expected to be available Sat for pickup and this really helped me prepare.
I just got a camera, big thanks from me, from Thailand. That's helpful
Thaks for making such a great video and it really helps me a lot as. Beginner of Sony A6700.
Appreciate your efforts.
I really enjoy your style in how you teach and do tutorials. Thank you for this!
This video is amazing and extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
What a huuuuuge help. Thanks Jay!
You bet my man, and thanks for the comments 👊
Thank you so very much Jason for such a comprehensive review of the Sony a6700.
I am going to be buying this camera and i thoroughly enjoyed what you did here. You have such a great way of explaining features by giving context to them. I think you really have a great talent. I'm subscribed and will watch some of your other videos as well.
Sony is a nice brand so does this video, very useful and impressive
Thank you Im considering this camera. This TH-cam explained the camera's cabalities very well
One question I have that I couldnt find in your excellent video is using sRGB vs RGB color space setting.
Thank you so much for taking the time to go over all of this. Extremely helpful 🙏🏽
This is an excellent video for someone starting out like myself!
Very well done sir! I just unboxed my camera and this video was a fantastic resource to get me started. Cheers!
Great to hear and enjoy your new awesome camera!
Perfekt Tutorial! Thank you very much, Sir. Greetings from Husum, Germany.
I appreciate the kind words , thank you :)
Very useful video and thank you for it. I watched your videos for rx100 VII and now for a 6700...you helped me a lot....😎👌✌
Great to hear :)
Thank you!
The best beginner guide i see thank you
You're very welcome and Happy New Year :)
Thank you so much! Please give this guide for the A7C II when it comes out.
Will do!
I bought one today at a photography show as a 16-50 kit, to replace an ageing Lumix. It doesn't come with a charger, or even a charging cable!
And as you'd expect, no memory card (but I sweet talked them into including one). You do get a neck strap, and printed manual.
Thanks!
Thank you very much!
Awesome video, thank you for taking the time to help get new Sony owners up to speed to use this great technology. Much appreciated 😀
You're very welcome!
This is a great video, thank you so much! I just purchased the A6700 and this has been most helpful. I have learned so much from you already. I have book marked this video to refer to again.
You're very welcome and Happy New Year :)
Longtime Canon user trying to learn how to do the basics on my new a6700. Just had a breakthrough. The trash can turns touch screen on and off when you are in the photo mode. I haven't watched a lot of the video yet Looking forward to watching the rest of it after my big break through.
What a legend. Awesome video
best set up video on youtube
Thanks!
Made it to the end! Thank you for taking the time to make this.
You're very welcome!
Brilliant. Thank you Jason.
Brother your effort is highly commendable 🎉..
Tq..
Sounds like some good settings to me 👍
Jason, love the channel!
In addition the A6700 has a way better battery 👍
battery on charge but just got the sony a6700,,,, took few shots in my living room low light .. no card yet ..wow .. its a killer..put the sony 70 350 on full zoom wide open 50 sec auto iso..the zip on my suit case looks nearly macro ...
cant wait to get mine Monday - thanks Jay, this vid will help, coming from a Nikon (5100) background.
I will take it ❤ thank you for the guide 😊
You're welcome 😊
What does the default middle button of the wheel do in video mode? thank you so much!
Good question as the manual does not say for some reason. By default it appears to be the standard focus button meaning it will just enable the center area focus as an over ride when pressed... That is how it is working on my camera anyway 👍
@Jason_Hermann thanks for the reply. You are right!! Also I just subscribed 👀👍
Can you recommend a budget monitor that mounts to the hot shoe of a6700 that we can turn around and use while vlogging? Just want something bigger than the flip out viewfinder - thank you!
Sure, This is a great option for the money in my opinion: geni.us/rTYXkfx
Fantastic intro video!
Really great introduction to the camera. I´ll follow you for more...
I have had my camera for 6 years and didn't know about the dial to adjust for my blurry vision. So needless to say... thank you!
You are very welcome!
Or will the camera still automatically lock in on my face once the Recognition Target is set to Human?
In manual mode yes the subject detect still works, unless you are talking about manual focus? In the case of focus, no if a manual lens...
@ happy new year! Still learning here 😅 please forgive me if I wasn’t clear. I’m using a Sigma 18-50 lens. What I want to know is if Subject Recognition will still work of the dial atop the camera is set to M (Manual).
Yes it works in Manual mode and that is how I have my camera set-up in my studio.
@ thank you!!
Great video! I found it VERY helpful.
Jason can I plug in the usb -c cable to run the camera on AC power instead of the battery for youtube filming. If so do I leave the battery in? Thanks
Yes, but the battery must be left in and you need a PD power source for the charger which I have linked in the description area if you are not famalier Jonny 👍
Awesome...Thanks for the reply... I guess I could use my ipad charging block also.
thank you it's super helpful to have this being a beginner noob. the simple explanation helped me absorb more than I thought I could. I was wondering if you would make a video specifically creating settings for indoor outdoor and sports or even video settings at a beginner level using the 123 on the dial. while explaining your thought process on changing the iso/aperture and the shutter speed? it would be insanly helpful.
The best tutorial for a6700. Does it have raw editing in camera?
Thanks and no...
