The only time I had a mite problem was from a bail of STRAW! Biggest truth!! I have never had to deal with lice.
One thing that helped prevent any problems: I put the trims from my Rosemary plant under their shavings in their nests.
I also treated with an herbal spray as you described.
    Thanks for a great video!

We have stick tight fleas and got them after using a bail of straw from TC. It was our first time with bugs and first time using straw from there.

The spray sounds great! We’ve had chickens over two years and thankfully we have not had this issue but I try to educate myself on these topics so I’m not left scrambling when I’m faced with new issues. We use an Amish recipe of hydrated lime wash in our coop and roost. It doesn’t allow anything to harbor in the wood. I applied it once at the very beginning. I’m getting ready to do our first deep clean, and I’m going redo the whitewash even though it’s still in good condition. I think it is an amazing addition. I will never be without it.

My girls (9) have a HUGE dusting area on the farm. Our kitties (11) use the dust spot too!! They also love our burn area where they find wood ash.

But you know, Woodash is what you soak to get lye. I never heard of using Woodash before today for this purpose. I just know that you soak Woodash in water and you get lye to make soap and it can burn you because it’s caustic. I would think if a chicken has it on their skin and they get wet it could be caustic. Just a thought.

I’ve never pulled my eggs after using ivermectin.. we use the same treatment on ourselves regularly anyway. Not my favourite parasitic treatment but it does work. We have recently run out though and I’m using other options.
I am still so confused about mites, never seen anything that resembles that, but I do deal with lice here and there!

Thanks for the info on the natural treatment. However, not everyone has access to the essential oils you listed. So would using only the garlic and cinnamon still work along with the deep cleaning of the coops often as well as using wood ash? Or do we must have the oils?

Hi, I look after quite a lot of ex commercial hens and other adopted chickens, including a poland boy, who had always been susceptible to lice, and he was always the first one I checked, and the most regularly ((for lice) they used to be treated btw with veg oil and a couple of drops of oil of oregano mixed in, and then gently brushed with a soft toothbrush or similar, onto affected area, and this would rid my chooks of the lice). I think through curing a chick, nearly 2 years ago, of severe curly toes (naturally), with food alone, the main ingredient being hard boiled eggs, I started feeding the chooks' eggs back to them every day, or as much as possible ... and now there is not a single louse on Roddy, or any of the other chickens! My chooks teach me a lot, and I'm certainly not as ignorant as I was 2 years ago!!

    Oh thank you!!
    New to keeping chickens.
They haven't started laying yet but they should any day now. I've been terrified of the knights and the lights so neem oil on the whole thing and and now I'm put lavender and rosemary branches in there under the wood shavings for their nesting boxes. Can you put diatomaceous earth on their roosting bars.
But I finally was able to buy your book and it should be coming next week I'm very excited.
Thank you for all you share!!

I haven’t seen any mites or lice on my hens but they most of them are molting and covered in dandruff. Could this still be signs of lice? Several of the hens have not obvious bare bottoms. Saddle feathers are gone even though I don’t have any mating roosters. Do I need a magnifier glass to see any critters that may be lurking?

That’s why I use Pineneedles that come off my property to bed my chickens. So far I have no problems with mites or lice. That is not to say that I won’t have a problem of some sort, but the pine deters them. I’ve also stripped some cedar branches that were cut off and use cedar fluff… not Cedar, bark, or Cedarwood… The actual greenery of the cedar. I did not use those for little chickens, but for a full grown adults in their coop. I keep checking my chickens, butts and necks all the time but I never see any sign.

I've had chicken with red mites and the commercial spray works but it's harsh. Diatomaceous Earth is ok but....honestly wood ash is way better that DE. Lice I have not had experience with and knock on wood I do not ever. Poor chickens that deal with that. Unbelievable that mites came from a bale of straw. Yikes. Double sided sticky tape on the ends of your roosting bars are a way to "collect" mites each night. Put new tape on every day until no more mites. Burn tape with mites...that was from an awesome video

I’ve got an unusual situation. We “inherited” a free roaming chicken when we bought a house. We’ve fed it and given it fresh water. We heard it has been around for approximately three or four years. She roosts up in our lemon tree every night. She started looking sick , skinny and wouldn’t roam outside of a small garden area around the lemon tree. I noticed her feathers around her neck had fallen out and her “crown?” was pale and her face just looks different plus she must be weak , she sits around a lot. She’s eating less but drinking water. I bought food grade diatomaceous earth, probiotics and Pure Planet Poultry Spray. Do I treat her and my little garden since she has no coop? I fee so sad for her and really want to help. I’m also gonna have to do all that by myself. I need advice, quick! 😢

The spray was easy to make and I believe it will work wonders. How are you straining the garlic out of the mix so that it can go through a sprayer? Are you making garlic water well a head of when you intend to spray it?

Something that works really well for mites it's called byemite. Depending on where you live you might find it under other brand names but that main ingredient in it it's called Phoxim. But be careful chickens can't get in contact with it.

Vivian it’s actually really hard to show them on camera without getting them all over the camera. You would definitely see them if you did an inspection on your chickens. Look on their bellies on the skin, around their vents, and on the back of their necks. You’ll see creepy crawlies for sure

If were picking up wood chips as our run bedding is that safe? Its from a local tree service but has been outside?
Will this likely bring about problems for my new chickens?

    • @SamStone1964
      @SamStone1964 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If the wood chips are fresh and damp and in a confined area without proper ventilation or sun you could have a problem with mould spores. Mould spores can be deadly for chicken respiratory systems. Old dry wood chips should be fine. And they won't bring in mites unless there has been a flock of infested wild birds living in them (not likely lol).

Amy, did you use Elector psp?
Im 3 years late watching your video. We have a huge infestation. They jump on us when we clean the coop. By the way, we clean the coop daily.
I am devastated by this infestation.
A friend told me cedarwood essential oil paralyses their mouths, ultimately leading to death. Have you heard or tried this?
I grow a heck of a lot of herbs, and use them in the coop daily.
Peppermint, catnip, wormwood, lavender, chamomile, artemisia-annua, rosemary, thyme, lemon balm and tansy. I haven't included garlic and will do so from now on.
Im desperate, can you help answer my questions? Thank you

@@floridahomesteader7983 Elector psp, and also used cedarwood.
I'm growing a heck of a lot of herbs for the coop. Wormwood, lavender, catnip, chamomile, rose geranium, rosemary, sage, peppermint & spearmint. Snipped into little bits and dried.
