I gotta say, I love that you all use the old scanners. We just got in the new Panasonics about a year ago and we are already starting to switch to the Zebras, which are both pretty much smart phones. Those old scanners though, man.. those things were like bricks. People have saved themselves from dog attacks with those old brick scanners.

The worst case was when I had knocked on the door and began to walk away at a casual pace. The homeowners dog burst through the front door and began to attack me.

I work for FedEx Express, I remember it being super hectic at the warehouse in the morning. Loading your truck was always stressful. Making sure you got everything and trying to leave at a decent time. And some lazy drivers who don’t feel like going to some area, try to hand off their stops to you. Idk how this guys makes it look so chill.
Now I drive the straight trucks, and do bulk routes. So it’s a lot more chill for me now 👍🏼

Saw a bunch of comments about running away from the door. There's a reason for that. You run from, not toward the door because it's faster and safer because you don't have a package in your hands. It would be great to run both ways but not safe. Most FedEx guys get paid by the day. If you can be more efficient but still safe, you can get paid the same for fewer hours. It's not about not being seen. 99% of the time when we are seen, we get a big thank you and sometimes offers of drinks and snacks. No need to run from that. ;-)

I started running for FedEx ground after about 3 years of being a package handler. I was trained to load by both CID labels and by street name. CID labels help when it's an unfamiliar route but the knowing the street names of a familiar route helps with organizing the truck and knowing what stop is in what section. Some times some of the packages arent scanned and you cant rely on the scanner are the manifest so knowing where they are in the truck helps you get in and out. I'm fortunate to have single story buildings so I typically grab either one or two boxes if they aren't ICs and for big factory businesses I back into the docks and unload, and load if I'm doing my pick ups.

Idk about cities or how FedEx ground works but in more rural areas it's usually a zone you cover. A lot of the same businesses and people order every day or frequently. You basically learn your zone and when you have a new address its most likely on a road you've driven down or delivered near.

I am also a FedEx Driver (thru a contractor) and I actually have three routes I’m trained on. One is a small town in Union Co, New Mexico (60 stops, 80 packages on average, but spikes during peak season coming up since there is no Walmart close by). The other is the surrounding area of a town in TX 40 minutes from the first (30/50 on average). The third (my primary) is rural Union County, which is light on stops and packages (15/20) but I usually cover 500 or up to 600 miles, which is like going from Amarillo, TX, to Houston delivering along the way.
