Types of Food Resource Guarding

- Resource guarding of food can present itself in many ways.
The first way: the dog only resource guards when it has full possession of the food (this is the most common).
The second way: the dog resource guards when no one has possession of the food, as in running across the room to guard the food when someone approaches it (this is also somewhat common).
The third way: the dog resource guards when both human and dog have possession (this is less common).
The fourth way: the dog resource guards even when the human has full possession and is encouraging shared possession (this is more rare)
The fifth way: the dog resource guards when the human has full possession and is not attempting to share, as in a person carrying food in a bag or backpack, etc. (This is usually the most rare but still occurs.)
Aspen is with us for human aggression, dog aggression, aggression to touch, grooming, and the vet, and resource guarding of many things. She has been prescribed many medications that have not worked, and her vet has recommended euthanasia.
We have seen her willingness to resource guard food she has full possession of (her bowl), food no one has possession of (loose kibbles on the ground), and now food the human has full possession of but is attempting to share.
In order for us to address the first two, we need to address the third first. She needs to see the handler as a benevolent leader in order to make progress, and that progress starts with this first difficult but necessary conversation. The healthy and balanced relationship between handler and dog is the only way to true rehabilitation. High level corrections won't solve this (dictatorship) and bombardment with treats and rewards won't either (pushover). It comes down to respect, trust, and communication. Much like marriage 🤣🤣🤣

For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕
I remember trying to hand feed a husky x malamute that was a resource guarder. I was handing to her, her own food and she was still growling at me. I hadnt seen a resource guarder do that before.
Back then I never understood why she would do that, until I watched this video and you said that the dog is used to scarying everyone away before eating, so that way they have full posession. makes sense! Thanks
Hi there! Awesome video with great info! Could you please tell me the brand of Bite Glove you use and your favorite protective equipment during an exercise similar to this video. Thanks! 🙏🏼
Please make a full paid course for resource guarding! 😅
We might be able to make specific resource guarding courses. But it is such a vast topic with so many variables, that just a general course would be a thousand hours long lol.
HAHA! that's a lot of projection! and from what I can see its none of that. The dog can see you're not confident.
