"Why would you let another dog approach your dog when it has something?" etc. They acted like I was abusing my dog and starving them or something and not acknowledging the real problem - and it lead to me getting bit. I found your channel and we're making progress. It's slow cause I don't have other good dogs or people to help me, but it's better than the alternative. Thank you so much for your videos.
I prevented my dog resource guarding, by never giving him a reason to resource guard to begin with. He has me (or guests) hold his chews. And I can take stuff from him if I have to (I mostly trade to keep preventing resoucve guarding if I'm able to.) It's jsut I avoid it whenver possible, and I avoid having treats or toys out if he's with other dogs, cause it can lead to fights. And I don't want fights. Sometimes it's just easier to prevent it from starting in the first place, than fix it afterwards. However, blaming you in that way is not very constructive. They could tell you that messing with their stuff can create resource guarding, and explain that whole thing, but that doesn't fix it. So gotta figure out how to fix it.
I really like that Joel recognizes that these behaviors while not great, aren't actually problematic until the dog crosses the line. Its natural for a dog to growl to show other dogs "it's mine!" But ince they cross the line you cant ever let them do it again.
My dog, one year old, 22 lbs, resource everything that has MY scent. Every time my son reaches for anything that has my scent, he bites. Today, he bit me when I took my top away from him. I'm at my wits end. I love that you don't do what every other video recommends and that is trade for a treat.
I’m a professional dog groomer,not a professionally paid or trained dog trainer, who works at home with my own pack of role model standard poodles, a number are service dogs or retired, and I’ve done your procedures with other dogs for years. I’m absolutely delighted to see your methods just as similar to my own. I am a petite 5’1”,and originally had to find my big girl voice working at a horse ranch where I had to get the attention and respect from 2000pound horses. That helped me immensely working with dogs and helping any dog I touch by proxy. Love seeing your stern but easy way of gaining respect.

I always tell my dogs that no one starves in my house but if the 1 would even contemplate that behavior again he gets his food taken away. Only when he sits and behaves does he get another chance. I feed my 3 dogs at safe distances and they usually go and check each other's bowls when they are done. However now they know if one would walk up to another they just walk away. I supervise feeding so there is no stealing food but growling, etc. is not tolerated.
I buzz of this guy , delivery is brilliant, no acting for the camera he's just always honest. I love how at the end when prince is playing a bit rough , he spoke to the camera with his eyes on the dogs. Pro 👍💪
Do you have a video on this subject with a dog that is ACTUALLY aggressive? My dog would flip out and snarl and snap and bare her teeth and go into a complete meltdown in this scenario. THAT’s what I need help with. This dog was giving just little growls and basically wagging its tail the whole time.
Same! My dog is super smart too so I can take bones, toys, etc from her with no problem. It when she has something she really wants that she’s not supposed to have that we have problems with. I think it’s because she knows she’ll get her stuff back but she won’t get the stuff she’s not supposed to have back. She’s usually very submissive to me but in these situations she gets crazy. The shock and awe method as shown here makes her worse and I think she potentially would bite me if I pushed her far enough. But if I’m calm and soft but still firm she not as bad and can usually get whatever it is away from her. Not sure if she goes into a fight or flight mode or what but it’s very confusing.
The whole point is that it starts as a little growl or the body stiffens before the dog goes full on attack, if you can’t see those early warning signs you need a professional and should stop looking at TH-cam videos
Agree that if your dog is acting that way with you then he doesn't see you as in charge. You need to fix yourself or get a goldfish. If you listen to the very beginning of the video he tells you exactly what to do to fix yourself. The whole point here was that this dog is known to attack other dogs but around Joel he isn't nearly as severe just based on Joel's attitude alone.
I have a feeling you have solved the problem by now. So there are methods and attitude. Attitude in this context means you believe that being in charge is the right thing to do. But how do you feel like you're in charge if you know the dogs going to bite you? That's where you think through the situation and set it up so you can role-play. This could mean putting a muzzle on the dog, using a barrier, using a tie back, one dog trainer even uses a bite suit. So which comes first methods or attitude. I think for "I'm the boss" attitude to be genuine then a person must have methods in their mind at least, if not already hands-on experience applying them or at least experience watching an experienced person apply those methods prior to obtaining "I'm the boss" attitude. On the other hand a person could have an attitude of being in charge and still simply fail due to poor method and technique. So maybe confidence is what requires knowledge of methods and techniques. I really do think you fixed the problem by now. Let me know if you didn't.
Your videos are the best, most helpful. I've searched on you tube for the best. I currently have 1 dog 1.5 years but getting a puppy and I think they both will be the best behaved. Not perfect yet but working on it.

I’ve seen so many suggestions about not removing whatever your dog is guarding because it will make it worse but I agree that if aggression is shown especially towards kids being too close that object is GONE and a verbal correction is immediately made. I gave my 10 month old Labradoodle a real marrow bone and she growled when my son got close. I immediately jumped up & yelled “No” then removed the bone. She never growls at me but will do it with my son. She received her dinner being hand-fed by him which does help. Love your content💯

My pup resource guarded her food from us when we first rescued her and we fixed that pretty quickly, but we’ve been having doggie play dates with some friends and I’ve noticed that even though doesn’t do it with people, she still does it with other dogs. She also resource guards me with other dogs, she tries to nip (not bite) her friends when I pet them. So clearly we still have some issues to work out, but I’m thankful to now have a starting point!

My husband always smacks the cage and we raise our voice loudly but he just doesn’t stop. Idk how to stop it. He gets very nippy! When he is alone, he is great! I will continue trying this method. I appreciate your hands on / real life show and tell - it is helpful to see actual case and how you apply corrections. I have a 7 month old puppy that is showing signs of resource guarding so it is a challenge to understand if it is part of the "2nd fear phase" and insecurities or something I should be trying to address now - I don't want to do something that would further enforce these tendencies especially with her.
I'd love to see a video on teaching an overzealous, young dog to not be so crazy when playing with a calmer/less physically robust dog. My puppy is very friendly, but plays with dogs the way he wants dogs to play with him. He also doesn't care about other dogs correcting him, he sees it as the other dog reciprocating his rough play style. I try to correct it, but as soon as the dogs start playing again he's right back at it.
What a coincidence this vid popped up! I'm babysitting a 3-month-old dobie and he has serious resource guarding issues. He attacks my dog when he sees my dog chewing a bone or if he has anything fun. Sheesh. Constant supervision and management. Thank goodness for crates and thank goodness my dog is patient and listens to me.
Great info, as usual. I wish I had known this with a past little shitzu that would viscously growl at me if I got close to her when she was eating. I had no clue back then how to handle it. She frightened me.
My method for resource guarding was to sit with my pups and fool around with their food bowl while they eat to get them used to the fact that there could be a human hand there. My last dog showed food aggression so every time he growled I sat him down in a sit/stay position for 10 seconds then allowed him to keep eating. Few days later food aggression was gone, and now any of my family members can mess with their bowls and not even get a growl. This method you show also seems to work great!
My 4 month old border collie doesn’t growl with me but she growls at other dogs if they come near her while she’s eating. My 1 1/2 year old pit/border collie won’t eat her own food around her. She also resource guards me when she’s excited and hasn’t seen me in a while. I started feeding them in their crates which helps with meal time but I don’t feel like I’ve addressed the issue. I think this video has helped and I’ll start working on this method and hope I can adapt it to when she resource guards me. Great videos!

We just adopted a pup, about 5 m/o from shelter, and he resource guards high value bones and food against me and our other 2 dogs. I have a highly reactive grazzer dog. His ideal world is access to a bowl of kibble where nobody bothers him or comes near the bowl so he can graze at will. Since he's come into my family (I married his owner) I've tried to instill respect for me and structure around eating: here's your food. Finish within 30 minutes or it gets taken. My wife will not impose boundaries like this so the messages are mixed and the dog returns to his food guarding ways. I've never met a dog as stubborn as this one. Recently he's taken to attacking people who offer him food because he knows he won't get it the way he wants. I can't get my wife to act like a leader to him so it's continuing this way. I'm at my wits end about it. We're getting a behavioralist to come to our home.
Thank you. I wasn't sure where resource guarding is because he's the Alpha dog with another dog but the real answer is it's my house. I say the toys are to be shared and I can pet who I like. My first male dog and the dynamics are interesting. Female dominant dog, marks etc. Large alpha dog still a pup watching your videos help.
i don't have multiple dogs with my dog, but i do have cats, and the dog jumped at our younger one today when he got too close while eating. good thing i have him in the kennel at the time. i've been trying various methods to fix the behavior. so far he no longer guards against me, it's just the cats i worry about since one of them is nearly 15 years old (and my baby)
You do learn the different growls and barks, my daughter has a great pyramids lab mix who is a good dog with one exception she resource guards and she attacks other dogs in your food and I keep telling my daughter she needs to work on this
Totally agree about a video resource guarding the owner. I have a new dog that won’t let my older dog receive affection from us. She literally resource guards US, and refuses to allow him to eat, play, or have our attention.

I have 5 pets (mix of cats and dogs) and they all get fed in separate areas ... more because some eat a lot faster and have no morals when it comes to food theft! I think it just allows them to be more relaxed and enjoy their meals.
Some of the ways I stopped resource guarding with food in my dog was hand feeding her half her food and also patting\stroking her while she was eating. As Joel says desensitization to having people and animals around her when she was eating.
I have a 7 months old border collie mix and she has resources guard since I got her. We have worked through some of it with me (I can walk around her and even get my hands close while she eats but no touching). Recently I started fostering a 3 month old stray puppy. The playing is pretty rough on his end and she is going wild over anything and everything that they can put in their mouth. I can't avoid but feel that I'm way over my head and at the same time it was me or nobody for the little stray.
Take all the aggressive dogs toys away and separate the two. Have the foster play with all the toys in their own safe space while in view of the aggressive dog. We did this with our own dogs and our resource guarder learned to share. It did take clapping and yelling “no” like this video when he would try to get the puppy through the mesh/metal barrier
You can give the puppy away. It depends though. Are you raising them to be aggressive? Is there a chance of injury? I know you love your puppy but you may need to make a difficult decision
We got my dog after his brother from the same liter passed away from stomach surgery we rescued him since the year that we have had him we got 2 six month old pups that are brother and sister and my dog has now started resource guarding since they’ve been here with treats and with toys even if all the dogs have their own I have been trying to break him of this habit and stopping it before it gets started as he tries taking toys out of spite even if he doesn’t want them he jumped on my 6 month old female but I was able to catch him before he could bite down or cause any serious harm
My dog resource guards me and clearly doesn't treat the rest of my family the same way that he does with me. He doesn't have any issue with toys or food. We have 2 dogs and he is ok with our other family dog, but when we have other dogs in the house he gives an almost 2 second growl before he launches at them. He doesn't listen to me when I use the loud voice to correct his behavior but he is overall a very obedient dog.
I have a weird problem with my two golden retrievers. Their both females and they do have litter mate syndrome. I’ve been working on training that out and it’s going well much better than it was. But Luna has a tigger of if I get on to her when she growls at honey. She full snaps and attacks honey where as if I just walk away she postures at honey and calms down. It’s really difficult to deal with cause it’s only when someone gets on to her.
Is it possible to train a dog like that to be good with resource guarding at all times? We have a dog like that and any time that I am anywhere near the dog there is never any problems; however, when I'm away from the dog he will often resource guard against other dogs to the point of fighting. It's frustrating for me because he never does anything like it when I'm around and able to correct the behavior.

This guy is so smart and really knows dog behavior. You have to be alpha dog and always, always, be consistent. My Doberman as a show dog and I schooled him to be literally polite with other dogs and humans and to be a friend with all little kids--the local Doberman club asked me to have him on display for a "meet the breeds" day at a local mall. The only time he fussed was when the kids left. He was such a trooper!
Not true at all. You’re dog needs to know you’re the leader, but the whole “alpha” shit is a myth and not the way to train you dog.. he literally explains it in his other videos too. You’re dog respecting you and seeing you as the boss /=/ alpha
So the treat thing worked at first but now Im over it and feel like my dog needs to feel a sense of dominance but am afraid we will hurt the progress made thusfar. What if were not around? I would like to see more vieos on resource guarding.
What do you do if one dog is resource guarding a human? Our older dog started resource guarding my husband after he brought home a 9 month old German Shepard Dog. However the GSD is Much Bigger so when the older dog starts growling when she comes near, the GSD will take it as an attack/challenge and they immediately get into a fight because the new dog won’t back down. The older dog never resource guarded before and was literally the best dog (a little bit of a nervous nelly but very well behaved) But now we have a dog fight once a week because my husband is doing work in the computer and doesn’t recognize the signs fast enough to correct either of them and they don’t fight around me. I do 100% of the training because I’m a stay at home mom so I’m here with the dogs. He doesn’t and when they fight over him it’s always when I’m not in the room. What do we do?!
My puppy has an OCCASIONAL resource guarding issue with toys. Most times he brings them to the other dogs & they will tug of war or chew a bone together, but sometimes he gets mad & will try to attack when another dog gets near. It seems so random & I don’t know how to determine when it will be a problem 🤷🏼♀️
My 13 week old puppy is only resource guarding with like treats so like a dental bone or she got a hold of raw hide ring she found and we went to get it from her not thinking if it and she snarled and snapped. We got her these teeth sweet potato things and she guards those but toys and food she does not. What is the best course of action.
I adopted boxer/pit mix puppy and she’s created bad vibes now at the park we use to go to. She 8mo now. She’s not allowed back. All of a sudden she viscously bites all the other dogs over toys. She bullies others too. She tries to bully our older dog at home too. Never has she done any of this. Everyone looks at her like a monster and I don’t blame them. At this point she’s been very defiant and is cruising to be rehomed
It’s interesting how the other dogs could already read that he was guarding his food. I wonder.. making your own dogs get close to guarded bowls and other dog aggressive situations, if that helps in making them the great helper dogs that they are.
I have been letting a Pitt I found on the streets decompress at my home. Then, when I brought my 14 yr dog home, at dinner he went into attack mode. It started as soon as I picked up the dog food bag. Gonna try again next week and feed them both in crates. I am really afraid though.
I still can decide if fully positive reinforcement or this mix of positive and correction is the way to go. So far both methods have their ups and downs and I'm not skilled enough to tell if I'll have issues in the future for being to strict or being a push over.

I learned this resource thing the hard way. Dante is a month old collie whom has had knuckle bones since he came to me. Last night as with every night it was time for the bone to go away and I went to pick it up (as I have done for the last 3 months) and he showed his teeth and went at me. My natural instinct was to grab the scruff of his neck and in a very loud voice say NO. I'm pretty sure I did it wrong all the way around but I'm not sure now I can trust him - or me.
My Chihuahua used to do this to me. I can't explain how I broke her of it other than picking her food up and pretending I was eating it. The hand fed her for a bit. Pretending to eat a chunk here an there. She stopped tho.
i now put the bigger dogs in individual rooms to feed them. i only give them treats now when they are in the same room, but i dont even want to do that anymore.
I spent three weeks with a Dogs that one back to its owner and pretty much the owner doesn’t want to do any of the work to help the dog except put them in a muzzle so he doesn’t bite her 😢 Hopefully this video helps them as they are not wanting to do what’s best for the dog
My 13wk old ACD doesn't react to me taking away any of her "resources ". But if the cat gets anywhere near the pups food dish, the puppy growls and charges after the cat.
Stamp it out now with the shout & clap intervention, or be prepared to say goodbye to the cat (one way or another). It's good you can take action while she's still young - shouldn't take long at all. I'll say that my method when my rescue dog was new to the household and barking at the cats whenever they got near was to calmly take her collar without saying anything and relocate her to an adjoining room on her own for 5 minutes. It took about 5 relocations over 24 hrs and she was cured. She was young, too, and pretty malleable still - also had happily experienced cats in her foster home, so I knew it was only a case of having issues with NEW cats - but I was aware she was highly sensitive, so took this much lower-key approach first. Whichever works!
My german shepherd doesnt resource guard from people. She guards from other dogs which happens at the park. She even goes as far as stealing toys from other dogs, and growls at any dog that gets near it. I feel that she is getting worse. The main challenge is disciplining her when it happens which is outside in the open where I can't get to her.
This is awesome but when you drop some thing on the floor and your dog grabs a hold of it and resource guards whatever it is he should not be having how do you stop that? He will have something like my measuring cup I dropped on the floor today in his mouth and he was growling and actually snapping at me that's the only issues I have with this dog… He will not out yet and if it continues with me trying to get it back even with a wiener he will start the growling and have his teeth clenched so you can't open the jaw… He is a Corso Rottweiler cross
My only problem with this is that my dog would finish that bowl so fast I wouldn't be out of the fence, in 3 seconds he would be "wow that was great, can I have some more" :D

She also resource guards me with other dogs, she tries to nip (not bite) her friends when I pet them. So clearly we still have some issues to work out, but I’m thankful to now have a starting point!
Thank you for sharing this! My dog doesn’t resource guard his food, he resource guards our other dog. We cannot go near her or her cage. He’ll lose a few screws! My husband always smacks the cage and we raise our voice loudly but he just doesn’t stop. Idk how to stop it. He gets very nippy! When he is alone, he is great! I will continue trying this method. I appreciate your hands on / real life show and tell - it is helpful to see actual case and how you apply corrections. I have a 7 month old puppy that is showing signs of resource guarding so it is a challenge to understand if it is part of the "2nd fear phase" and insecurities or something I should be trying to address now - I don't want to do something that would further enforce these tendencies especially with her.

I'd love to see a video on teaching an overzealous, young dog to not be so crazy when playing with a calmer/less physically robust dog. My puppy is very friendly, but plays with dogs the way he wants dogs to play with him. He also doesn't care about other dogs correcting him, he sees it as the other dog reciprocating his rough play style. I try to correct it, but as soon as the dogs start playing again he's right back at it.

What a coincidence this vid popped up! I'm babysitting a 3-month-old dobie and he has serious resource guarding issues. He attacks my dog when he sees my dog chewing a bone or if he has anything fun. Sheesh. Constant supervision and management. Thank goodness for crates and thank goodness my dog is patient and listens to me.

Great info, as usual. I wish I had known this with a past little shitzu that would viscously growl at me if I got close to her when she was eating. I had no clue back then how to handle it. She frightened me.
I have a Dutch shepherd pittie mix and he is very very food aggressive and we tryna work on that. And it’s pretty hard but we going.
My method for resource guarding was to sit with my pups and fool around with their food bowl while they eat to get them used to the fact that there could be a human hand there. My last dog showed food aggression so every time he growled I sat him down in a sit/stay position for 10 seconds then allowed him to keep eating. Few days later food aggression was gone, and now any of my family members can mess with their bowls and not even get a growl.
This method you show also seems to work great!
My 4 month old border collie doesn’t growl with me but she growls at other dogs if they come near her while she’s eating. My 1 1/2 year old pit/border collie won’t eat her own food around her. She also resource guards me when she’s excited and hasn’t seen me in a while. I started feeding them in their crates which helps with meal time but I don’t feel like I’ve addressed the issue. I think this video has helped and I’ll start working on this method and hope I can adapt it to when she resource guards me. Great videos!

We just adopted a pup, about 5 m/o from shelter, and he resource guards high value bones and food against me and our other 2 dogs. I have a highly reactive grazzer dog. His ideal world is access to a bowl of kibble where nobody bothers him or comes near the bowl so he can graze at will. Since he's come into my family (I married his owner) I've tried to instill respect for me and structure around eating: here's your food. Finish within 30 minutes or it gets taken. My wife will not impose boundaries like this so the messages are mixed and the dog returns to his food guarding ways. I've never met a dog as stubborn as this one. Recently he's taken to attacking people who offer him food because he knows he won't get it the way he wants. I can't get my wife to act like a leader to him so it's continuing this way. I'm at my wits end about it. We're getting a behavioralist to come to our home.

i don't have multiple dogs with my dog, but i do have cats, and the dog jumped at our younger one today when he got too close while eating. good thing i have him in the kennel at the time. i've been trying various methods to fix the behavior. so far he no longer guards against me, it's just the cats i worry about since one of them is nearly 15 years old (and my baby)
You do learn the different growls and barks, my daughter has a great pyramids lab mix who is a good dog with one exception she resource guards and she attacks other dogs in your food and I keep telling my daughter she needs to work on this

I have 5 pets (mix of cats and dogs) and they all get fed in separate areas ... more because some eat a lot faster and have no morals when it comes to food theft! I think it just allows them to be more relaxed and enjoy their meals.

Some of the ways I stopped resource guarding with food in my dog was hand feeding her half her food and also patting\stroking her while she was eating. As Joel says desensitization to having people and animals around her when she was eating.
What tips can be used for dogs that resource guard their food and water from people?
I have a 7 months old border collie mix and she has resources guard since I got her. We have worked through some of it with me (I can walk around her and even get my hands close while she eats but no touching). Recently I started fostering a 3 month old stray puppy. The playing is pretty rough on his end and she is going wild over anything and everything that they can put in their mouth. I can't avoid but feel that I'm way over my head and at the same time it was me or nobody for the little stray.
Take all the aggressive dogs toys away and separate the two. Have the foster play with all the toys in their own safe space while in view of the aggressive dog. We did this with our own dogs and our resource guarder learned to share. It did take clapping and yelling “no” like this video when he would try to get the puppy through the mesh/metal barrier
You can give the puppy away. It depends though. Are you raising them to be aggressive? Is there a chance of injury? I know you love your puppy but you may need to make a difficult decision
We got my dog after his brother from the same liter passed away from stomach surgery we rescued him since the year that we have had him we got 2 six month old pups that are brother and sister and my dog has now started resource guarding since they’ve been here with treats and with toys even if all the dogs have their own I have been trying to break him of this habit and stopping it before it gets started as he tries taking toys out of spite even if he doesn’t want them he jumped on my 6 month old female but I was able to catch him before he could bite down or cause any serious harm

I wish I could go back in time and start again with my late dogs, there was so much I lacked. There was one dog who resource guarded his food.
My dog resource guards me and clearly doesn't treat the rest of my family the same way that he does with me. He doesn't have any issue with toys or food. We have 2 dogs and he is ok with our other family dog, but when we have other dogs in the house he gives an almost 2 second growl before he launches at them. He doesn't listen to me when I use the loud voice to correct his behavior but he is overall a very obedient dog.

I have a weird problem with my two golden retrievers. Their both females and they do have litter mate syndrome. I’ve been working on training that out and it’s going well much better than it was. But Luna has a tigger of if I get on to her when she growls at honey. She full snaps and attacks honey where as if I just walk away she postures at honey and calms down. It’s really difficult to deal with cause it’s only when someone gets on to her.

Is it possible to train a dog like that to be good with resource guarding at all times? We have a dog like that and any time that I am anywhere near the dog there is never any problems; however, when I'm away from the dog he will often resource guard against other dogs to the point of fighting. It's frustrating for me because he never does anything like it when I'm around and able to correct the behavior.
Part of our job as dog guardians/owners is to be the BOSS!

This guy is so smart and really knows dog behavior. You have to be alpha dog and always, always, be consistent. My Doberman as a show dog and I schooled him to be literally polite with other dogs and humans and to be a friend with all little kids--the local Doberman club asked me to have him on display for a "meet the breeds" day at a local mall. The only time he fussed was when the kids left. He was such a trooper!

Not true at all. You’re dog needs to know you’re the leader, but the whole “alpha” shit is a myth and not the way to train you dog.. he literally explains it in his other videos too.

So the treat thing worked at first but now Im over it and feel like my dog needs to feel a sense of dominance but am afraid we will hurt the progress made thusfar. What if were not around? I would like to see more vieos on resource guarding.

What do you do if one dog is resource guarding a human? Our older dog started resource guarding my husband after he brought home a 9 month old German Shepard Dog. However the GSD is Much Bigger so when the older dog starts growling when she comes near, the GSD will take it as an attack/challenge and they immediately get into a fight because the new dog won’t back down. The older dog never resource guarded before and was literally the best dog (a little bit of a nervous nelly but very well behaved) But now we have a dog fight once a week because my husband is doing work in the computer and doesn’t recognize the signs fast enough to correct either of them and they don’t fight around me. I do 100% of the training because I’m a stay at home mom so I’m here with the dogs. He doesn’t and when they fight over him it’s always when I’m not in the room. What do we do?!

My puppy has an OCCASIONAL resource guarding issue with toys. Most times he brings them to the other dogs & they will tug of war or chew a bone together, but sometimes he gets mad & will try to attack when another dog gets near. It seems so random & I don’t know how to determine when it will be a problem 🤷🏼♀️
My 13 week old puppy is only resource guarding with like treats so like a dental bone or she got a hold of raw hide ring she found and we went to get it from her not thinking if it and she snarled and snapped. We got her these teeth sweet potato things and she guards those but toys and food she does not. What is the best course of action.

I adopted boxer/pit mix puppy and she’s created bad vibes now at the park we use to go to. She 8mo now. She’s not allowed back. All of a sudden she viscously bites all the other dogs over toys. She bullies others too. She tries to bully our older dog at home too. Never has she done any of this. Everyone looks at her like a monster and I don’t blame them. At this point she’s been very defiant and is cruising to be rehomed
Why don’t you hire a professional trainer instead of committing to a dog and then rehoming them when their behavior gets difficult to manage?

It’s interesting how the other dogs could already read that he was guarding his food. I wonder.. making your own dogs get close to guarded bowls and other dog aggressive situations, if that helps in making them the great helper dogs that they are.
I have been letting a Pitt I found on the streets decompress at my home. Then, when I brought my 14 yr dog home, at dinner he went into attack mode. It started as soon as I picked up the dog food bag. Gonna try again next week and feed them both in crates. I am really afraid though.
I still can decide if fully positive reinforcement or this mix of positive and correction is the way to go. So far both methods have their ups and downs and I'm not skilled enough to tell if I'll have issues in the future for being to strict or being a push over.

I learned this resource thing the hard way. Dante is a month old collie whom has had knuckle bones since he came to me. Last night as with every night it was time for the bone to go away and I went to pick it up (as I have done for the last 3 months) and he showed his teeth and went at me. My natural instinct was to grab the scruff of his neck and in a very loud voice say NO. I'm pretty sure I did it wrong all the way around but I'm not sure now I can trust him - or me.
What did you end up doing? Any update?

My Chihuahua used to do this to me. I can't explain how I broke her of it other than picking her food up and pretending I was eating it. The hand fed her for a bit. Pretending to eat a chunk here an there. She stopped tho.

i now put the bigger dogs in individual rooms to feed them. i only give them treats now when they are in the same room, but i dont even want to do that anymore.

I spent three weeks with a Dogs that one back to its owner and pretty much the owner doesn’t want to do any of the work to help the dog except put them in a muzzle so he doesn’t bite her 😢

My 13wk old ACD doesn't react to me taking away any of her "resources ". But if the cat gets anywhere near the pups food dish, the puppy growls and charges after the cat.
Stamp it out now with the shout & clap intervention, or be prepared to say goodbye to the cat (one way or another). It's good you can take action while she's still young - shouldn't take long at all. I'll say that my method when my rescue dog was new to the household and barking at the cats whenever they got near was to calmly take her collar without saying anything and relocate her to an adjoining room on her own for 5 minutes. It took about 5 relocations over 24 hrs and she was cured. She was young, too, and pretty malleable still - also had happily experienced cats in her foster home, so I knew it was only a case of having issues with NEW cats - but I was aware she was highly sensitive, so took this much lower-key approach first. Whichever works!

My german shepherd doesnt resource guard from people. She guards from other dogs which happens at the park.
She even goes as far as stealing toys from other dogs, and growls at any dog that gets near it.
I feel that she is getting worse. The main challenge is disciplining her when it happens which is outside in the open where I can't get to her.
This is awesome but when you drop some thing on the floor and your dog grabs a hold of it and resource guards whatever it is he should not be having how do you stop that? He will have something like my measuring cup I dropped on the floor today in his mouth and he was growling and actually snapping at me that's the only issues I have with this dog… He will not out yet and if it continues with me trying to get it back even with a wiener he will start the growling and have his teeth clenched so you can't open the jaw… He is a Corso Rottweiler cross
My only problem with this is that my dog would finish that bowl so fast I wouldn't be out of the fence, in 3 seconds he would be "wow that was great, can I have some more" :D
Try a slow-feeder or wobble bowl.
