That friend Guy, happens to be Yug, who Yahtzee has collaborated with in owning the Mana Bar and the Australian Gamer along with the pilot for Game Damage.
"The fights descended easily into incomprehensible chaos, the characters are so small, and the camera zooms out so far" As much as I love Brawl and the Smash series in general, that is literally Smash in a nutshell.
@@qty1315 No. I think everyone understands that the further away you are from something, the harder it is to hit it with a projectile. It's not some crazy clever game mechanic. It's physics. It's nice that they panned the camera so you can, in theory, see more but it moves too crazily like it's forgetting that there's a game happening instead of playing a movie. The mechanic is shitty, it doesn't add much if anything to the combat, all it does it make it feel lile you're fighting a button-masher that much more while obscuring everything, which makes it that much shittier Also on other fighting games, I've noticed if the camera doesn't pan, it forces the characters to stay near each other, obviously to keep on fighting If you can't close that yard long gap then whatever combo happening was probably designed to do that, if it's too strong, that is a balancing issue
@@qty1315 Sorry, I'm not trying to seem elitist, and no I don't follow any metas, I generally play older games that have nothing but a cult following left (this game could be a decent example) You know how you pick up a game but there's this one really annoying thing, like a long animation or angled down camera? After awhile you either just put up with it or do your best to avoid it Sometimes that avoidance can lead to people being rather turned off by the game, to the point of not playing Anyway that's my take on the camera, I don't have that much to say on balancing for pretty much any pvp based game since it's always slightly changing whether it's a new character, patch, control lag, or a stiff wind Also on projectile based characters, maybe put a delay on the projectile so it can't be used to juggle somebody continually Or don't allow a character's moveset to be so easily exploited, idk. Basing a character or ranged combat in a game where people literally beat each other is pretty redundant anyway, so of course it's broken and generally seen as annoying The few dedicated fighting games I have played, there wasn't much trouble closing a gap though, so I have yet to see that strategy consistently do much, but again I also don't watch several tournies to see any consistency
@@qty1315 I am being funny but now that I think about it their are people that dumb to say what the internet.... the greatest achievement of mankind.... used to tell other the earth is flat ....
I like how he dared a bunch of dumb fanboys to spam his email at the end because, if the mailbag episode is to be believed, that''s exactly what they did.
The best part of Yahtzee not knowing who Marth is, is that he (still technically) is _another_ character from a video game exclusive to Japan. Fire Emblem was what, a decade old by the time Melee rolled around? And they seemingly only added Marth because Roy (protagonist of the 6th just-released game) was there for promotional purposes (ala Corrin/Byleth) and they shared a cloned moveset. Hilariously, this led to the release of FE7 internationally, for the first time, and caused a huge wave of popularity and profit for importing eastern media (mostly Japanese, due to the quality of their cartoon animation, wild variety of subject matters/culture clashes, and continuous stream of just _GOOD_ games)...except for MOTHER 3, which remained Japan-exclusive until it's release on the Virtual Console about a decade later, despite remaining a cult classic and one of the most-heavily-requested official translations of a video game in the world during that period. Other games limited to Japan include Final Fantasy 2/4/5 (the west got 3&6 titled as 2&3, for some not-entirely-clear reason), Super Robot Wars (the 2D-Fighter-esque equivalent of SSB for Giant Mecha Anime) and Touhou... ...which as far as I'm aware, despite the music's popularity, most if not all of the Bullet Hell's are still *officially* Japan-exclusive, the same way Secret Of Mana 2 was until very recently, where it was released as Trials of Mana despite there having had been multiple fan translations for years, just like Mother 3.
@@beesree39 ...wait, what the fuck? Looking at the Wiki's now, I see that you're right, but I _swore_ there was a big freakout about the VC release because it indicated that they were going to (or simultaneously did) release it outside of Japan. Why the fuck did they release a VC port for Japan, and not sell it to Western audiences? It's a huge hit over here now, and no-one cares about the themes of bereavement, drug use, and animal cruelty in this day and age...
1 viable one? lol how about FOX 1V1 FD NO ITEMS? 24/7 :P honestly if mk was banned or nerfed brawl would be universally agreed to have a more balanced character roster then melee for the most part
Everyone's "that guy" with pretty much any game though. Any shooter, any fighting game, any online game, any racer, etc. This is pretty much an impossible thing to get away from. You'll always have friends who don't play the same game as you or don't bother to get as good as you for it to be enjoyable for everyone in the group. But when you *do* have people come over and play on your console, half the time they can't transfer their data/progress and their just stuck using what you've got. A way around this if they play on their own platform and they are just as dedicated as you to play the game in question. For example, CS:GO. I don't play it, but my little brother plays it with friends every single day for hours on end and have a blast because everyone is as dedicated to get very good at it. So unless you have that, then you'll always be "that guy", just as each of your friends will be "that guy" for whichever game you may not be as good at or play at all.
It baffles me that people get angry at him for these reviews. I mean, seriously, how often does he have good things to say about games; even the ones he likes he beats up relentlessly. And, while I love Smash Bros., I sympathize with having a minority opinion and can see where he's coming from. I for my part hate Mario Kart with a passion, for more reasons than I care to go into here. People look at me like I'm crazy when I say that, but it's not like I'm trying to keep people from liking it, I just want no part of it.
+CrescentGuard He does it because it is funny. Its okay to make fun of something you like and pick flaws in it because nothing is perfect. There is no point to get offended by someone making fun of games on the internet. It that does bother you then dont watch his videos. He isn't going to change.
The problem in this case is that, although Brawl is terrible, Yahtzee clearly either didn't play it or went out of his way to only tell lies. This game has tons of crippling flaws but he barely mentioned any of 'em. He was too busy lying. He was clearly just mad that so many people kept recommending it to him after he gave them his email address specifically to give them a way to make recommendations to him.
I remember this I absolutely adored this game, back when I played it. I played through the single player campaign with my little brother, and it was the most fun either of us had ever had with each other.
Tommy J I played the one on n64, GameCube, and Wii. And to me the core gameplay was the same. Only difference was from melee to brawl the single player became worse. It was so similar that I didn't really enjoy brawl, it was just the same thing. Looks like Smash 4 is the same too.
+Tommy J Brawl is actually still quite competitive. Sure, it's the LEAST competitive smash game, [stupid trip mechanics], but its still highly competitive. Mid skill level players can beat a button masher every single time. Hell, I mainly play smash 4, and i can beat mashers in brawl [I've only played brawl for like 3 hours total]. But you are right, the other smash games are much better in terms of the combat.
+12131213 For someone who is not competitive, the only real difference between the games is the characters and story mode. So if you don't plan on playing to get good at the game, then there's no real point to owning the other ones unless you want the characters. However, from a competitive view, the games are all vastly different. New move sets, different hit boxes, different movement mechanics, different frame data, New tech skill, ect. There are a large amount of differences, but if you are curious in getting into competitive smash, then Smash bros Melee has a very big scene, as well does Smash 4.
Yeah I've played the smash bro games with my friends, who take that game so serious and constantly play it. They go off and show some fancy moves with fox, falcon, and Pikachu. I pick up a controller and pick game n watch and after a month of playing and winning I'd say maybe 75% of the time my friend says " use your smash move" at which I ask " the hells a smash move?" They were shocked I was beating them without using the best move sets.
Just because they play it a ton doesn't make them good. You can bash your head against a wall for years and make no improvements. Trust me when I say it is VERY possible to be good at a smash brothers game. It's surprisingly technical
Then Fire Emblem Awakening happened, and they *_SPOILER ALERT_* *_SPOILER ALERT_* *_SPOILER A L E R T_* *_If you didn't get the point by now..spoiler alert. Read at YOUR OWN RISK!!_* made Marth(or at least, one of his descendants at the very best) a female. Which makes Marth even cooler. I actually main him and Ike. I'm such a douche with Ike. I'm proud of myself for that.
What an incredibly powerful force. ..Though, I like Brawl, but I'd rather consider myself a rather frequent player, not a fanboy, since most of Brawl's fanboys tend to be assholes to everyone.
I kinda grew up with Smash Bros and I can guarantee you that if you get good enough, the people who don't know what they're doing are the most terrifying opponents you can find. You can read your opponent when you know they aren't just a random number generator Hurling attacks with no rhyme or reason.
Coming soon, Yahtzee has to review the new smash bros game since it has a story campaign. Though that's weirdly falling alsosortakinda a new kirby game because the japanese title.
The creator has said the new one will be somewhere in between Melee and Brawl in that respect. I've got really high hopes for it. It seems like they're taking what was good about each one and finding the equilibrium. And they're taking special care to balance the characters now. It could honestly be the best one yet.
2:57 Oh I know I've been "that guy" on a couple occasions. specifically when I convince my friends to buy/download a game I already have and then proceed to rub in their face how much better at it I am than them :D
To refresh Yahtzee's memory: Marth is such a big deal because he's the flagship character of Fire Emblem. It was his inclusion in Melee that brought the series to the US.
*Cracks knuckles* *Places on fedora* HAO DAYUR U MAYK A VIDYO ABOWT A DIFFUREENG OHPINYUN ABOWT A NIN-10-D'OH GAYM?! Dear lord that was painful to even do, I apologize for any aneurysms I may have caused. In all seriousness, Nintendo games usually aren't meant to be taken seriously. This was made EXTREMELY obvious by Tomodachi life.
I suppose i'm somewhat of a nintendo fanboy since I thoroughly enjoyed Brawl and all its faults since I tend to ignore a games faults as hard as I can to appreciate the good parts of it. League of Legends for instance too is another part of this for me. I love it even with its busted state.
Also a lot of the thing with Yahtzee is that he reviews mostly based on his opinion, that's what makes it funny. You can't let his reviews get to you because you have to realize he's stating his opinions as a fact. Though he does make a lot of good points based on his opinion... In my opinion.
I don't know what makes Yahtzee think he could be pro brawl players by button mashing. That'd be like saying chess is flawed because you could guess the optimal move. Or saying rubix cubes are bad because it's technically possible to solve them with luck.
So for everyone coming up with quasi-intelligent comments on how he played or reviewed the game wrong, let me break it down for you and show you that he not just wrote this to insult you all. First and foremost, he says that YOU ASKED him to review this game! Second, he establishes that he doesn't really like fighting games, nor multiplayers games, so SSBB surely is not a game catered to him. Then he admits that this game's single player is not enough to judge the whole game on. Last, he did not have enough time to unlock a substantial part of the game, something that he, again, just admits. So what he had to do is play a game within a limited time-frame, which consists of gaming concepts he doesn't like. He also states that the review of this game is rather pointless. He is not the target audience, it is a brawler and it is full of fan service. What he elegantly describes is the 'that guy' syndrome. My friends had the exact same problem. We played the game almost always at the same friend's house and liked it as a party brawler, but the host also played it the most when we were not there, so he was always better than us. What he didn't describe, but what I will add as a complaint, is that the Wii controls are complete shite for this game. I bought a classic controller to play this game. In retrospect, the Wii really was a shitty piece of gimmicky hardware. A brawler like this should be played with normal controllers. Another thing: why do you care, if you feel he 'insulted' a game you like? You like it, right? Are you a bit afraid that negative reviews will influence your view of the game? In that case, you almost admit to blindly liking a game. Just admit that either you are a blind fanboy, admit that every game has its faults and so does this game or admit that some all games are for a specific targeted audience and that in this case Yahtzee clearly wasn't part of that audience.
Nintendo was in its prime during the snes and n64 days. They were making revolutionary awesome games. However they have been riding the nastalgia train since than. That train only has so much intertia. They need to start doing things new that actually matter or their success will slowly grind to a hault over a period of years.
I loved the gamecube, there is some great stuff on the gamecube. However the degree of meaningfull innovation on the gamecube was far less than on the previous systems. Ont he snes and n64 entirely new genres and game design techniques were developed. Since the n64, Ninteno has stuck with the same old characters, and outside a select few(mario sunshine), there has been very little deviation from n64 gameplay mechanics. Japan used to be an epicenter of gaming innovation and creativity. Ive read however that modern japan thrives on nastalgia. The guy who made sold snake gave a talk on this at GDC i believe.
Sean Halnon Xenoblade Chronicles X, while xenoblade isn`t a new ip, X is looking very promising, they are also doing a few new ips as well as crossovers (there`s a persona one in there somewhere). Fire Emblem has been revived with Awakening and once again not an old ip, doing quite well so far. I'm not saying Nintendo aren't still riding the nostalgia train, they are trying to go in a new direction while still bringing along some older titles
Sean Halnon Yeah right, like: Baten Kaitos, Skies of Arcadia, Lost Kingdom, Megaman X Command Mission, Phantasy Star Online, Xenoblade Chronicles, Pandoras Tower, The Last Story All those uncreative rehashes of the same games they released over and over again... There are a lot good non Mario/Zelda/Starfox/Metroid games on Nintendo Consoles, but most people are just looking at those and then go and complain about Nintendo, while other companies milk their products like Final Fantasy, God of War, Halo, CoD, Battlefield, Kingdom Hearts, Dragonball, GTA etc. for the last decade(s), but that's ok, because it's Sony, Square and whatnot who made these, so those are ok, but fuck Nintendo for "milking" their products...
The more I watch this, the more I understand the guy. He gives good reasons as to why it's not his type of game, and despite what fanboys may say otherwise (I.E. being a good and not at all confusing game) He is entering this at a neutral beginner's standpoint. Also, thank you for Minority.
SSBB is, regardless of its shortcomings, simply a good way to let out some anger. Want a good fighter game, that actually requires skill and has an engaging storyline? (Or eight, or nine, tenth one soon!) SKULLGIRLS!
Also eh...unlockable content is pretty cool and rewarding when you get it i makes you player actually earn stuff and feel rewarded when they unlock more playable characters really without unlockable stuff or achievements what would your goal be going towards except for simple fun? I mean ya know assuming you've beaten brawl's story mode that is really there shouldn't be laws against this sort of thing as it's perfectly fine really the levels were kinda samey but it wasn't that bad really but going through them again with the great maze could be annoying if your "that guy" who is so much better then others at the game maybe get a second person to help you get the characters....or simply keep on fighting on shadow moses island which can be ended very quickly if you set the match to both be 1 stock each and quickly having one person lose a life each match till like the 15th one is over you should be able to get snake pretty quickly. Sonic would be more difficult honestly as either do classic mode 10 times each with a different character or playing 300 battles or in subspace where he is literally obtainable at the end of it so yeah...the easiest option seems to be just do classic mode with 10 seperate characters...it takes a while but hey with it being sonic the freaking hedgehog it makes sense why it may not be exactly be the easiest character to unlock in the game eh...even in like a game like brawl you can improve and get more skilled quite a bit...trust me as one of my first experiences with smash it's true. I wouldn't say nintendo is just to much wanking off it's old franchises as if it can still do new and unique things with them well that's pretty admirable and interesting and means those franchises can surely last a while. also a "Few more virtual boys"? you mean failures? well...thing is even back then they were pretty rich so they could survive quite a bit of failures and now again after the wii u? with on the switch they still use there old franchises and other ones they don't use as much and new ones to. There now the richest company in japan actually also you ask who is marth and how is he a reward? I dunno...could say the same for lucas and ness (especcialy lucas as mother 3 wasn't released in the west) . which really earthbound is less known then fire emblem I would say. Anyways with marth even back in melee he was a reward for here in the west to pique potential interest in the series with him requring effort to unlock while in japan? him and roy would already be known over there. In brawl fire emblem has debuted at that point in the west and he was in melee so...he would already be known here in the west at that point to also looking back...I get why mother 3 only released in japan honestly with some of it's content. in this day and age yeah I get why really. Also like I said before pretty sure most would play mario kart then mother 3 did I defend the name nintendo wii on a internet forum? no I was to young then lol but now? I do more defending stuff on internet forums (like say reddit for example) and youtube though nowadays. I won't just a enjoy a game even smash regardless of it's faults as like if it was like sonic 06 I probably wouldn't enjoy it as at that point it would honestly be a bad game but here brawl really isn't a bad game honestly And as someone who isn't a fanboy I enjoy it. But no I won't just go spam your email with hatred lol. I will say though now I know more about smash bros or maybe even a bit more about fighting games then you so eh...I'd say I know what im talking about more then you when it comes to smash bros now (i've had a lot of experience with the series since then when I first played brawl and even then brawl wasn't my first time playing smash bros honestly)
"Engineering a scenario in which Mario can brutally beat the stupid out of Princess Peach while the crowd screams for blood is very satisfying" This is the highlight of the review for me. Or rather, highlight of the actual review part of the review
The 10 hours of 'play' is quite easy to do. Just sit two characters on a multiplayer map that nothing happens on, go to work/sleep/school/whatever for 10 hours and when you come back bam, unlocked sonic.
***** No, he wasn't. This is one of the ways you unlock Sonic: Fight for 10 hours or more (cumulative between multiple players) in Brawls, then defeat Sonic.
Suddenly, you've turned in 'that' guy. Don't pretend you dont know what guy, that guy is so good at the game because he plays it on his own, the loser! That's me! I'm that fucking guy! I was playing Tekken 6 to unlock all the unlockables at uni, and when my flatmates played against me, I'd regularly get Xbox 360 controllers lobbed at me for being 'bullshit' with Lars and Paul Phoenix =/
The only thing I would want to correct Yahtzee on here is that he's misguided in thinking more people would buy Mother 3 than the next Mario Kart. Mother 3, even for as fabled as it has become would have niche appeal at best. Mario Kart on the other hand has mass appeal, something Mother doesn't. That comment seemed like it came out of some sort of grudge. Otherwise, I can understand, but respectfully disagree with everything else said in this video.
I realy don't see why people are angry with yahtzee here. Yes he called it horrible but with a few good bits, but he does that for just about every game. Realy when people watch a zero punctuation vid they should expect 1 of 3 ratings: horrid, bad with interesting bits, or good but kinda stail. That is unless it's portal.
The thing is that ussually there is humor in his reviews this one was made just to piss off people who asked for it and every other fan of the game in its way
As someone who hates Brawl, I can explain it. Nearly everything he said about the game is a lie & he almost certainly didn't play it. If you're gonna hate on a shitty game, you should do it honestly.
Nintendo is like a Phoenix. It rises from its own ashes. It fell at the release of the Wii U, was reborn around Mario Kart 8, and will be in its prime in 2015. They still have a shit ton of money though.
Jesus Christ OMFG! Jesus!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You've come to enlighten me? JK. I'm an atheist, and actually, I think the Wii U might be Nintendo's greatest console they've made. Nintendo will never go bankrupt. It has fucking billions of dollars.
JealousBishop Yeah, since sony has to directly contend with nintendo. The problem with these idiots that they're just thinking "america america america" or whatever country they're from, they don't seem to think that these companies exist anywhere else.
Alright, so here's my (rather weak) defense of the wii. It is really really good for party games and multiplayer stuff with older family members who have no idea what a thumbstick is and still wear clothing that they got in 1910. There were a few really good games on it, such as the first person shooter metroid game and spiderman web of shadows, but alot of the possible innovation that could have been done with the wii feels like it got swept aside to cater to "family friendly" games. So much for motion controls revolutionizing the gaming industries, huh?
Here's the problem though, from the point of view of consumer you can pay $400 or however much the Wii cost and then $60 more for each game that you'll probably play a couple times with family and friends or Nintendo can quit fucking around with hardware and just release their games on the Xbox or PlayStation which most people who play games already own and we can stop playing around stupid hardware Gimmicks and get good games like super Mario sunshine and the decent Mario party games again
i would be surprised he didn't mention the final smashes, considering they're a bit of a big thing in the game, but considering he said he played vs for one night and the single player for the rest i guess its not too surprising.
The irony of Brawl being the one game that has an extensive single-player campaign that actually doesn't take a huge amount of time to complete, and he'd have the whole roster available in less time than it takes in vs. matches.
Yahtzee, please play Street Fighter 3rd Strike: Online Edition on 7 Stars and only mash buttons. You won't get very far. Then play online and only mash buttons. Results will be similar.
Gareth Gobbelcoque I would agree. However, he has a friend who is into fighting games, and they can easily play offline together. I mostly said online edition as it is easily available on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and is the most modern version of the game. Again, I agree, online is not very good, but I mostly meant against another person.
***** Like I previously said, he does not necessarily have to play online, just against another person. Also, I say online edition because he could easily get it off of PSN or Xbox Live.
***** Oh I love his channel, watch it all the time, and maybe I will write him. But, if you want to play 3rd Strike, again, it's on PSN and Xbox Live. If you don't have either, well, I guess you're outta luck.
what i loved about smash bros so much compared to other fighting games is that you actually COULD get good at it, because it doesn't follow the usual mortal kombat or tekken formula where there's umpteen billion fucking combos for each character and every character has different ones so there's no standard formula to get familiar with. sure you can get good with scorpion but that doesn't do you a damn bit of good if you switch over to johnny cage, and even if you're good with scorpion you still aren't going to probably use 80% of the combos he's got available because there's too freaking many to memorize. but with smash bros you have one blueprint for controls and the only difference for each character is figuring out the best timing with which to use those moves, due to things like reach and swing speed. the stages of that process usually involve "are they above you" "yes" "then do your up+A or your up+A smash," repeat for instances in the other 3 cardinal directions, problem solved. but what's nice is that if you hit up+A then no matter what character you're playing with they're going to attack upwards. it's consistent in a way that's very easily learnable, which is nice because then you're not stuck specializing in just one character with a moves list the size of the comments history of this video. as a result i don't think i've ever lost to someone who button mashes at this game because all i have to do is point in their direction and click attack and my character does it, while they're over there trying some ABAAB quarter circle half turn bullshit. and i'm not even considered that good at the game in any kind of casually competitive circles
I was laughing through-out the whole thing, but when he got to the part about Mother 3, I just pulled a double birdie in the direction of Japan. Because DAMMIT SERIOUSLY
Your commentary and metaphors are very funny, but you often drop the ball on actually getting games. Super Smash Bros is a franchise that you can definitely get crazy good at and totally own your friends who don't play much.
It's weird, I enjoyed Brawl, but honestly Yahtzee is correct, when he highlights it's flaws they're all true, but when he judges whether it's fun or not it's clearly his opinion and he doesn't make any attempts to say no one will enjoy it. I don't understand the negative feedback people have given him for this one unless you are indeed "a miserable fan-boy twat."
Yahtzee understands just how mediocre this game is. There's no real strategy involved in the combat save for "mash that button and occasionally press this other one and you might win". I tried the most recent Smash Bros. myself purely because I never bothered with it before and the combat is the same in all of them anyway so if I played one, I've played them all. The series itself would be so much more entertaining if there was a solid story involved like Brawl arguably has, but besides that it's just something you play when you're stuck in the car on a somewhat long journey, and even then it gets old as soon as you've gotten all of the unlockable content. I've held onto my Smash Bros. game purely for that reason, and it passes the time relatively well when you have nothing else but that's about it. Final score from me is 6/10. Story would push it up to a seven but the combat is so mediocre that I couldn't dare give it any more than that.
If you've ever played the game with even the slightest idea of what each button does, you would understand how to play the game. Put simply: read the fucking manual!
Saying the combat is the same in all of them shows how little you know about the series. Brawl is extremely slow with Smash 4 being a noticeable improvement, but still slow. Smash 64 (the original) is about the same pace as Smash 4, but Melee is far and away one of the fastest games out there when it comes to actions per minute. Just a simple youtube search of SSBM Apex can show you how bat shit insane that game is competitively.
Yahtzee I shall explain who Marth is for you, Marth is a character from Fire Emblem which is a turn-based strategy RPG franchise, which Nintendo had no plans of releasing in America before Super Smash Bros Melee, in which Marth was also an unlockable character along with another Fire Emblem character Roy, originally they were only going to be in the Japanese version of the game but Nintendo America basically said "No don't do that, put them in all versions of the game" and so Marth and Roy were put in the game and their appearances in the game was enough to convince Nintendo to bring the franchise overseas (too bad Lucas in Brawl wasn't enough to bring Mother 3 out of Japan)
That is a really good idea. It's up there with, "if you take the time to ask a question about a video you should take the time to read the description first".
Lol, I am "that guy" at Halo, Call of Duty, Super Smash Bros., and Mario Kart. In my circle of friends there are very few that can beat me at these games. I am the nerdy guy who takes video games to seriously and plays the games on Expert until I can beat almost everyone while everyone else plays Flappy Birds.
Same, but I hate when someone beats me as Meta Knight in brawl and then uses this as justification for their high skill level. Meta Knight can spam so many moves that it isn't even funny.
Also, I am astounded that he complains about Brawl's fighting system. REALLY?! WHO PRACTICES FOR 10 HOURS IN BRAWL. The game gets laughed at by the fighting game community precisely because it's so accessible and easy to learn. It's to fighting games what Kirby Air Ride is to serious racing games like Forza. In other words: so insanely easy you must be suffering from an extreme case of farmville casualitis to find it difficult. I'm not saying this as some Smash Bros/Nintendo zealot. I'm saying this as someone who actually plays real fighting games.
So many people arguing the "button-mashing" comment That's the case for literally any fighting game. If you let off more hits, and land them, you will likely win. No shit, mashing buttons makes that easier and with how simple some games and their characters are, it's really easy to offset combos so of course it happens. Also this is how "that guy" gets created. "That guy" just knows when to start mashing the buttons so they can maybe pull off whatever combo they practiced for hours while their friends did something else
If you think you can even stand a chance in Brawl by randomly mashing buttons, then you either need to stop smoking weed or actually play the game. Not knowing what you're doing in this game will either send you down a bottomless pit since you'd have no idea how to use a recovery move, or you would mabey land a small hit since you would have no idea how to perform a smash attack, which is impossible to pull of with random button pressing. This game doesn't have combos, which is the main reason people win in games like Soul Calibur with random button mashing
I haven't played a single Nintendo game since gameboy advanced became obsolete, nor will I have interest in doing so in the future. No personal vendetta against the company, I'm just someone who likes all of my eggs in one basket, namely the PC basket. Seeing as how Nintendo has a strict policy on keeping all of their games on their own systems, that means I'm always stuck out of the loop and to be honest, I was never at a loss from this. Most of their games have been rehash after rehash of the same franchises to the point they make Call of Duty games look like a breath of fresh air. Maybe one day technology will advance to the point that someone could develop an actually functional emulator for their systems.
I tried to say the exact same thing to some Nintendo fans only to be told to shut the fuck up and the classic trump card line of"Mario saved the gaming industry".
Imagine there were a rule that stated that "If you're bad at a particular genre of game, you're not allowed to review it" and how much better each side would feel. There'd be no reviewer who begrudgingly plays a game their shit at and will always have given it a low score, and there'd be no fans of the game getting butthurt by said low score. But utopia is a long way to go...
You don't get better at games unless you play them. It should be noted that a well-paced, easy-to-learn hard-to-master gameplay experience transmits across all genres, and benefits everyone. New players don't feel like attaining a level of experience to play with the higher ups is impenetrable, and old players get new opponents and by extension new gameplay experiences. Also, I think it's a good idea to have everyone playing genres the don't like, as long as they qualify that it's not their favourite (as Yahtzee did). If a critic doesn't like fighting games, finding the controls rather impenetrable and lacking context for everything, then you know the game won't satisfy new players and more likely caters to the fanbase that already owned the last 3 games and can kick my ass every time no matter what I do. A veteran of that particular genre will then know to look to another reviewer who is also a veteran to get a more qualified opinion. Honest criticisms from new players is what convinces companies to lower the barrier of entry and acquire a larger player base. TLDR: Progress isn't made in a room where everyone just jerks off by themselves.
My apologies, it looks like I missed a crucial part of my thought - this should only apply to people who _don't like_ the genre they're bad at. Of course, if you happen to be bad at fighting games but you like them, then play and review to your hearts content. But if you dislike the genre, you're obviously not going to hold a neutral starting position, and that's almost as bad as holding a favourable starting position! Believe me, I'm as against circlejerks as much as you are, but I'm also against unfair negative bias.
R.I.P. GameTraders Robina.
I wonder if his friend Guy still lives in that house.
Turn and face the strange, ch-ch-changes :(
That friend Guy, happens to be Yug, who Yahtzee has collaborated with in owning the Mana Bar and the Australian Gamer along with the pilot for Game Damage.
The irony is, this isn't even the worst review he's given a game.
It's an: "It's not for me but if this is your thing it'll suffice."
i guess that's why game magazines had genre specialists reviewing.
Hunt down the freeman enters
"The fights descended easily into incomprehensible chaos, the characters are so small, and the camera zooms out so far"
As much as I love Brawl and the Smash series in general, that is literally Smash in a nutshell.
The mechanic is shitty, it doesn't add much if anything to the combat, all it does it make it feel lile you're fighting a button-masher that much more while obscuring everything, which makes it that much shittier
Also on other fighting games, I've noticed if the camera doesn't pan, it forces the characters to stay near each other, obviously to keep on fighting
If you can't close that yard long gap then whatever combo happening was probably designed to do that, if it's too strong, that is a balancing issue
@@qty1315 Sorry, I'm not trying to seem elitist, and no I don't follow any metas, I generally play older games that have nothing but a cult following left (this game could be a decent example)
You know how you pick up a game but there's this one really annoying thing, like a long animation or angled down camera? After awhile you either just put up with it or do your best to avoid it
Sometimes that avoidance can lead to people being rather turned off by the game, to the point of not playing
Anyway that's my take on the camera, I don't have that much to say on balancing for pretty much any pvp based game since it's always slightly changing whether it's a new character, patch, control lag, or a stiff wind
Also on projectile based characters, maybe put a delay on the projectile so it can't be used to juggle somebody continually
Or don't allow a character's moveset to be so easily exploited, idk. Basing a character or ranged combat in a game where people literally beat each other is pretty redundant anyway, so of course it's broken and generally seen as annoying
The few dedicated fighting games I have played, there wasn't much trouble closing a gap though, so I have yet to see that strategy consistently do much, but again I also don't watch several tournies to see any consistency
@@qty1315 That's great, so it does become possible for the gap to be closed and giving a newer, less skilled player a chance of doing something?

1:38 Good to see Yahtzee finding his own little slice of heaven in a game he's not all that fond of.
Mailbag Showdown makes this even funnier.
Other games limited to Japan include Final Fantasy 2/4/5 (the west got 3&6 titled as 2&3, for some not-entirely-clear reason), Super Robot Wars (the 2D-Fighter-esque equivalent of SSB for Giant Mecha Anime) and Touhou...
...which as far as I'm aware, despite the music's popularity, most if not all of the Bullet Hell's are still *officially* Japan-exclusive, the same way Secret Of Mana 2 was until very recently, where it was released as Trials of Mana despite there having had been multiple fan translations for years, just like Mother 3.
mother 3 is still Japan exclusive?? it wasn't on vc out of Japan lmao

No one has mentioned how perfect the closing music is, considering the topic. Great Video from forever ago Yahtzee.
I'm that guy.
I wanna be that guy :)
I WANNA KNOW WHAT LOVE IS!!!
I WANNA BE IN THE MINORITYYYYY
I wonder how the guys are *GAMETRADERS ROBINA* are doing today
It went under shortly after (and possibly because of) this review. By the time this was uploaded to youtube it was already long gone

AardvarkLord LOL YAAAAAAAAAYYY WOOOOOOOO VIOLENCE!!!!!!!!
I played through the single player campaign with my little brother, and it was the most fun either of us had ever had with each other.
can't someone like smash without being a fanboy?

The creator has said the new one will be somewhere in between Melee and Brawl in that respect. I've got really high hopes for it. It seems like they're taking what was good about each one and finding the equilibrium. And they're taking special care to balance the characters now. It could honestly be the best one yet.
This is still one of my favorite reviews and after all these years I still quote it regularly. ah the good ol days.

Dear lord that was painful to even do, I apologize for any aneurysms I may have caused.
In all seriousness, Nintendo games usually aren't meant to be taken seriously. This was made EXTREMELY obvious by Tomodachi life.
shadowraith10 But the big difference is messing around in that game was fun, brawl wasn't.
Yeah an 0.000000000000000000000025% chance if you make 18 random moves
Hilarious review yahtzee, fucking love the green day song at e end, you made my fucking day!
this game along with melee are probably the best games to play with friends
"First off, this comment was made 3 years ago." Point? I didn't know there was a time limit to respond to comments.

Nintendo was in its prime during the snes and n64 days. They were making revolutionary awesome games. However they have been riding the nastalgia train since than. That train only has so much intertia. They need to start doing things new that actually matter or their success will slowly grind to a hault over a period of years.
What about the Gamecube era? They were still pretty innovative and fresh then.
Sean Halnon
Yeah right, like:
Baten Kaitos, Skies of Arcadia, Lost Kingdom, Megaman X Command Mission, Phantasy Star Online, Xenoblade Chronicles, Pandoras Tower, The Last Story
All those uncreative rehashes of the same games they released over and over again...

I love that outro song.
Also eh...unlockable content is pretty cool and rewarding when you get it i makes you player actually earn stuff and feel rewarded when they unlock more playable characters really without unlockable stuff or achievements what would your goal be going towards except for simple fun? I mean ya know assuming you've beaten brawl's story mode that is
really there shouldn't be laws against this sort of thing as it's perfectly fine really
the levels were kinda samey but it wasn't that bad really but going through them again with the great maze could be annoying
if your "that guy" who is so much better then others at the game maybe get a second person to help you get the characters....or simply keep on fighting on shadow moses island which can be ended very quickly if you set the match to both be 1 stock each and quickly having one person lose a life each match till like the 15th one is over you should be able to get snake pretty quickly. Sonic would be more difficult honestly as either do classic mode 10 times each with a different character or playing 300 battles or in subspace where he is literally obtainable at the end of it so yeah...the easiest option seems to be just do classic mode with 10 seperate characters...it takes a while but hey with it being sonic the freaking hedgehog it makes sense why it may not be exactly be the easiest character to unlock in the game
eh...even in like a game like brawl you can improve and get more skilled quite a bit...trust me as one of my first experiences with smash it's true.
There now the richest company in japan actually
also you ask who is marth and how is he a reward? I dunno...could say the same for lucas and ness (especcialy lucas as mother 3 wasn't released in the west) . which really earthbound is less known then fire emblem I would say. Anyways with marth even back in melee he was a reward for here in the west to pique potential interest in the series with him requring effort to unlock while in japan? him and roy would already be known over there. In brawl fire emblem has debuted at that point in the west and he was in melee so...he would already be known here in the west at that point to
also looking back...I get why mother 3 only released in japan honestly with some of it's content. in this day and age yeah I get why really. Also like I said before pretty sure most would play mario kart then mother 3
did I defend the name nintendo wii on a internet forum? no I was to young then lol but now?

The 10 hours of 'play' is quite easy to do. Just sit two characters on a multiplayer map that nothing happens on, go to work/sleep/school/whatever for 10 hours and when you come back bam, unlocked sonic.

***** or minecraft, Xcom, etc etc
The thing is that ussually there is humor in his reviews this one was made just to piss off people who asked for it and every other fan of the game in its way
As someone who hates Brawl, I can explain it. Nearly everything he said about the game is a lie & he almost certainly didn't play it. If you're gonna hate on a shitty game, you should do it honestly.
I kinda like Brawl, maybe because button-mashing is about my speed. Playing with my siblings probably helps, too.
I wonder if unlockable characters being replaced by DLC characters made him miss unlockable characters?
Nah.
Damn! Yahtzee predicted Nintendo's downfall 5 years early!
JealousBishop Which will make their tragic downfall all the more moronic and hilarious
stalemittens Sony will be the first one to go down. Believe me.
So much for motion controls revolutionizing the gaming industries, huh?
fun fact if you go through a lot of Yahtzee's reviews he actually liked a fair number of wii games.
Ruben Ryan That doesn't mean he likes the wii
cuz he doesn't
Here's the problem though, from the point of view of consumer you can pay $400 or however much the Wii cost and then $60 more for each game that you'll probably play a couple times with family and friends or Nintendo can quit fucking around with hardware and just release their games on the Xbox or PlayStation which most people who play games already own and we can stop playing around stupid hardware Gimmicks and get good games like super Mario sunshine and the decent Mario party games again
djluke327 And a Paper Mario game that has soul again?
(Liked SPM; I'm talking about Sticker Star on 3DS, due to what you said about gimmicks.)
James Reid One could hope
Why did Yahtzee even buy a Wii? He hasn't had a positive review of a game on it to date and he's said time and time again how flawed a system it is.
He liked galaxy
True, it just seems a waste
Ddiaboloer Oh yeahhhhhhhhh
i would be surprised he didn't mention the final smashes, considering they're a bit of a big thing in the game, but considering he said he played vs for one night and the single player for the rest i guess its not too surprising.
The irony of Brawl being the one game that has an extensive single-player campaign that actually doesn't take a huge amount of time to complete, and he'd have the whole roster available in less time than it takes in vs. matches.
The ZP review that caused the most butthurt, lol!!
people are still angered by a 3 year old review? Sheesh, thats impressive.
Yahtzee, please play Street Fighter 3rd Strike: Online Edition on 7 Stars and only mash buttons. You won't get very far. Then play online and only mash buttons. Results will be similar.
Fighting games don't work too well online, The slightest amount of lag can and will decide the victor every single game.
***** Ah, I see. I am lucky enough to have a Pc and a PS3, so I got 3rd Strike. I wish Capcom would port it.
what i loved about smash bros so much compared to other fighting games is that you actually COULD get good at it, because it doesn't follow the usual mortal kombat or tekken formula where there's umpteen billion fucking combos for each character and every character has different ones so there's no standard formula to get familiar with. sure you can get good with scorpion but that doesn't do you a damn bit of good if you switch over to johnny cage, and even if you're good with scorpion you still aren't going to probably use 80% of the combos he's got available because there's too freaking many to memorize.
but with smash bros you have one blueprint for controls and the only difference for each character is figuring out the best timing with which to use those moves, due to things like reach and swing speed. the stages of that process usually involve "are they above you" "yes" "then do your up+A or your up+A smash," repeat for instances in the other 3 cardinal directions, problem solved. but what's nice is that if you hit up+A then no matter what character you're playing with they're going to attack upwards. it's consistent in a way that's very easily learnable, which is nice because then you're not stuck specializing in just one character with a moves list the size of the comments history of this video.
as a result i don't think i've ever lost to someone who button mashes at this game because all i have to do is point in their direction and click attack and my character does it, while they're over there trying some ABAAB quarter circle half turn bullshit. and i'm not even considered that good at the game in any kind of casually competitive circles
Until the newbie picks Meta-Knight and hits A.
SirMandokarla Then you hit the newbie with your controller. That's the beauty of party games XD
NeverdeadCube whats a party without the occasional acts of random violence.
rjlundholm89 Precisely. It is how males bond.
SirMandokarla If you're not stupid you could easily defeat a button masher.
I love how people are still arguing about this one. By which I mean 'grow the hell up'.
I'm a bit confused about how he knows who Lucas is but not Marth.
I don't know about other fighting games, but Smash Bros allows you to unlock characters by doing multiplayer matches too.
Which fake infinitely longer
up until this point i had no idea he was Australian, because i'm an American who can't tell the difference between them and the British.
Might be because that isn't an Australian accent. Like myself he just happens to live there
that does make me feel better
He IS british, he just moved to Australia. He mentions it in one of his reviews, i think it was Assassin's Creed 3?
Yeah, i also wonder why it didn't have a story campaign. "I thought Sequel means Game with MORE stuff in it!" -Yahtzee
Have you seen competitive gameplay of Smash? Also, Smash 4 is way better than this.
TheVergilus "most competitive fighting game ever" HELLO THERE, BLAZBLUEGUILTYGEARKINGOFFIGHTERSXIIISTREETFIGHTER3THIRDSTRIKEPERSONA4ARENATEKKEN6VIRTUAFIGHTER5
I dont think Yathzee would care about a Nintendo character.
Gamefan56 I was explaining who Marth is for him and why people like him so much
rbraunbeck96 Read that entire thing and I'm still not sure if Marth is a guy or not... BTW why the hell are his victory lines still in Jappanese
Hawk Lamptay 1. Marth is a guy
2. Idk
One of the end texts tells people not to explain who Marth is because Yahtzee doesn't care.
That is a really good idea.
It's up there with, "if you take the time to ask a question about a video you should take the time to read the description first".
Unlocking characters make's it more fun and rewarding.
Yahtzee is such a douche.... God I love him!
I think every gamer has been "that guy" at some point.
Same, but I hate when someone beats me as Meta Knight in brawl and then uses this as justification for their high skill level. Meta Knight can spam so many moves that it isn't even funny.
I'm the first to reply to have a profile picture
So many people arguing the "button-mashing" comment
That's the case for literally any fighting game.
I just like the opening song
If you think you can even stand a chance in Brawl by randomly mashing buttons, then you either need to stop smoking weed or actually play the game. Not knowing what you're doing in this game will either send you down a bottomless pit since you'd have no idea how to use a recovery move, or you would mabey land a small hit since you would have no idea how to perform a smash attack, which is impossible to pull of with random button pressing. This game doesn't have combos, which is the main reason people win in games like Soul Calibur with random button mashing
Oh well, hate mail it is...
Any changes all these years later?
Great choice of outro music Yahtzee! Green Day absolutely rules! How have you not gotten a copyright strike though?
I will say with smash it's normally meant to be more of a causal party platform fighter anyways

How about you don't watch videos you don't like, and quit wibbling on about imaginary social rules you wish you could impose on people.
Zachary Norris Bit late there.
Imagine if there was a world where twats kept their mouths shut. But I guess human mute buttons don't exist yet.
