- Dixville Notch is a remote, unincorporated township in New Hampshire's North Country. Population: 12. A Notch is a term used in Northern New England to describe a deep narrow valley, or mountain pass, typically carved by glaciers. We have several of them, and they tend to be gorgeous if you can get in a position to view them.
Table Rock is THE location for viewing Dixville Notch. It is an outcropped ledge overlooking the notch, with sheer cliffs on either side. There are 2 ways to ascend up to it. One option is a fairly quick, and exceptionally steep 0.7 mile path up. Another is a more moderately graded 1.5 miles up. We opted for the "get it over with" shorter path. Thunder showers earlier in the day cooled temperatures for us quite a bit, but also left a lot of humidity in the trees. There was a lot of wind topside, but after the humid slog up the mountainside, we'd have welcomed a hurricane.
For those that live up in the North Country, the closest city is actually in Canada: Sherbrooke, QC. With the border still closed due to COVID19, things are eerily quiet. We spent hours soaking in the wind and views atop Table Rock, and only encountered 4 people all afternoon.
