Loved everything about this video. The trail was a delight to follow, albeit vicariously, with you. I loved the wetlands with the boardwalks, the ponds, the climb up Zealand Falls, the walk through the boulder fields, even the wet scrambles through the more difficult sections. Although this might be easier to enjoy sat watching your exertions in front of the TV with my coffee than it was for you all. The descent to the parking lot through the autumn colours was sheer delight. This has been added to my rapidly expanding wish list for my future visits,(ever the optimist). Loved the gentle musical accompaniment which added to the, seemingly, serene environment.
If you find yourself back in the Whites someday, Crawford Notch, which is where a lot of these areas are accessed from, is a splendid place. Franconia Notch gets a lot of attention, and a lot of the areas are more easily accessible, but Crawford is such a gem.
Funny how we're willing to get up at ridiculous hours to go climb mountains, but can't be bothered during the week for zoom calls and emails... 🤷🏻♂️😆 RHAB's squeals of delight when going through the mud made my day. 🤣
Yeah, he almost got his trail name changed to McAB (Mud covered Adventure Boy) after this one. He has zero issues with getting dirty. None. His dirt dosage is heavy. Sarah made him change into a completely clean outfit before she let him back in her car. So true on the early rising. The mountains are pretty much the only thing that will get us up before dawn. If I had to get up that early for work, I'd probably quit. 😂
Zealand pond and falls looked like it should home Gandalf the Grey 🧙♂️❤👍the falls were great, like the rock face had spung multiple leaks! 💧 🚰 Zaiden AKA RHAB...rock hopping adventure boy, was particularly full of beans, the balance he possess if formidable! The Zealand house would be great to stop and use as a HQ. Yeah, that was a full face plant during the 2 mile slog. We were around 7 miles in at that point I think, and after all the rock hopping, his legs were starting to buckle a bit. That was a rough couple miles leading up to the shelter. Trail conditions were horrid, and all the zig zagging and hopping around we had to do made this run 1h10m longer than when we did it 3 months ago (the trail was a lot drier then). It was basically the dead marshes. If one has the money, the Zealand Hut makes for a great base camp. It's about $180 per night, per person to stay (includes dinner, and maybe breakfast) though anyone is welcome to come in to get out of the weather, refill water, and all that for free. They also sell cookies (biscuits) and other baked goods to passers by. A little farther in there are areas where camping is permitted, or what you folk would call wild camping.

Dang! That was an aggressive day of hiking with kids. Well done. Those falls were really neat to see. Then the mud! Ugh. Muddy trails are the worst. We went on one last Saturday inadvertently. Great fun with the kids on this hike and adding the Lord of the Rings spin on it was fun too. You were probably saying "My Precious" dead feet need a serious rest! Awesome hike. Have a great day and lots of Ibuprofen! Take care.
Yeah, thankfully there was no lasting soreness, just that 2+ miles of hopping rocks took the wind right out of our sails. Nothing a good night's sleep and a lazy Sunday couldn't fix! Thanks for stopping by!

There was a time, not long ago, when they'd be begging for mercy after 4 or 5 miles. We've all come a really long way in the last year. As long as we can keep things fun, and there are interesting places to stop along the way, they handle things pretty well. The post hike meal is also a prime motivator. They get really excited for that. Thanks for watching!

Lol your description.. This certainly looks like a grueling hike. Congrats on making it in the end though .. And at least it didn't result in any PTSD flashbacks haha :P

I must say JR that this was quite a beautiful video and probably my favorite. Love the intro, love the scenic views and everything else this video encompasses. The Zealand Notch (I thought you went to New Zealand when I saw the title haha) at White Mountain NF like all the other hikes you’ve been on in NH calls my name! The great spirit through out the video that you and your family shown through each segment of the hike no matter how long, how wet, how tiring is an inspiration to everyone. I am glad you put out such great content and blessed with such great nature! Edit: Also, you aced the musical score for this video.
This is one of those places that most people who LIVE in New Hampshire have never heard of. Franconia, Crawford, and Dixville notches get all the space in the travel brochures, but there are roads that run through them. Places like Zealand, and a couple other lesser known notches, can only be seen on foot, and usually after a pretty solid hike. Next time you guys plan to come up our way, please let us know. It'd be fun to spend a few miles on trail with you
@@northeastfamilyadventures9186 ❤️that would be lovely! Thank you. It’s amazing how beautiful this world could be and how few of those other roads people had taken! Hopefully this will be all be well preserved for many generations to come.
Great New Intro! Very Cool! Zealand Falls was beautiful! My boys would have wanted to climb it too, they love anything rocks! Zaiden is such a trooper being able to hike so far! What was there meal of choice afterwards that was a pizza, burger or Steak kind of hike, well deserved! Take Care- Melissa and Curtis
Don't we all? Can't be a proper adventure without at least a little type II sauce. 😉 Speaking of which, we've been missing a bit of your type II enthusiasm lately. You got anything coming out anytime soon?
@@northeastfamilyadventures9186 I have a bunch of trips filmed and not edited. Started a new job and haven't had time. Things should calm down after thanksgiving at work. Unfortunately, I stopped recording in september and I've done a lot of hiking since then. I was just afraid if the backlog got too long I might never get to it. I'm looking forward to winter. I enjoy those videos more, but working up the will to record with frozen fingers is tough.. lol
I so enjoyed seeing the sights along with your family on this epic adventure! Loved the LOTR references…and your intro was great! 👍🏻 Awesome that you did this hike again after losing your original footage- amazing sights at the boulder fields..I’ve not seen anything quite on that scale. Really enjoyed the views at 16:46 and again near waters edge at 18:13..so glad you had sunshine for this one, although it would’ve helped if it had dried up some of the mud you encountered. I’ll remember your rankings of ‘fun’ next time I’m out! ~ LoL.. thanks for sharing your adventure. Happy Thanksgiving to your lovely family 🍂❤️
I wish I could take credit for the fun scale, but that was developed long before any of us started getting into it. Someone was once introduced to me as a "Type 2 fun enthusiast". I played it cool at the time, but first chance I got, I had to look up what that was. Turns out, I too am a "type 2 fun enthusiast" I just didn't know it until a couple years ago. 😄 This was actually a great hike first time we did it. That 2+ miles of swamped trail wasn't nearly as swampy then, and it took us an hour less to get through it. Challenging conditions help build character though! Thanks for stopping by Amy!
Great video guys and a great effort! Difficult underfoot but wee turbo wellies Zaiden was definitely showing yous all how it's done. 😀. I could see the pain in your face JR at the end, you looked tired! When its rough underfoot it certainly makes the walk harder and every step is a potential ankle breaker. Great views at the lake and another enjoyable walk. Thanks guys! What was the chosen meal by the way? Cous cous?.. 😁😁Paul
Cheeseburgers with pizza for dessert. Zaiden has waterproof trail shoes, but it doesn't work if you get in it over the tops of them, which he did, constantly. The trail would have been a breeze with proper wellies. Wouldn't have cared about the mud and water so much then, but at 2C I prefer to keep my feet dry if I can, so it was quite the dance. The way down on the leaves covering skittering rocks underfoot was just icing on the cake. I was feeling great next morning, but everyone was pretty tired at the end of this one.
Hahahah that's what Kat says! Evening guys, just settling down for the day and you and your no doubt wondeful video will see us into the land of nod, back soon with more comments! Already loving the LOTR vibes radiating from this one, excepting to see hobbits in barrels floating down the river! And you ate 2 miles in loving it 🦫❤👍☕
We have to feed the children constantly on hikes to keep them going. They eat very little at a time, so they have to stop a bit more... kind of like hobbits really. They were enjoying second breakfast at the last homely house.
Wow, great new Intro, JR! Somehow, I get the feeling that Aria was involved, maybe in music choice and artistic direction? Congratulations to RHAB, for climbing the Zealand Falls, it was "pretty scary, but we made it." That had me smiling. That was a good trail for RHAB to get his name. The second half did look a little Type II! So, now I am curious, what did the kids have to eat afterwards - their favorite post-hiking reward?
Thanks for the feedback. The inspiration for the new intro came from some stuff Aria has been doing with her tablet. I had to use completely new software to put it together. I suppose it would be possible to do with Vegas Pro, but it was definitely easier the way it was done. The second half wasn't quite as type II as stumbling through the dark in the 15th hour of Franconia Ridge, but it fell into the zone. A 20 or 50 foot water crossing is a ton of fun. 2 straight miles of it was quite a dance. For the victory meal, the children went for something they knew would never be granted under any other circumstance. Cheeseburgers, a pile of french fries, and pizza for desert. I wish I had the camera handy for that discussion in the car when they asked for it, would have been a worthy epilogue. When I asked why not ice cream, they said they had ice cream for desert all the time, but we never let them have both cheese burgers and pizza. 🤔
@@northeastfamilyadventures9186 Oh boy, I'm have a good laugh at Aria and Zaiden's victory dinner. Cheeseburgers, fries, and pizza! Yep, would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that conversation. Ah, children. Enjoy this time, they grow up fast, and they totally deserved their meal!!
Very nice production - always a great job on the music selection! Love that area. RHAB was in full swing rock hopping on this trip. Was that a trail you took up the falls where you mentioned you and RHAB took a different route? Man that Ethan Pond Trail was a swampy muddy mess 🤣 Mud builds character! Good idea doing this one as a point-to-point. What's the family's favorite post trail meal on these long hikes?
On the trail from the Zealand/Ethan Pond trail junction up to Zealand hut, there are 2 spurs off the trail. You showed the lower falls on your last video, that's the first spur. Where Zaiden calls "Daddy, come on!" That's the second spur that leads to the lower part of the upper Falls. Where we climbed up the side and crossed over the top, that wasn't a trail, we just looked for a way to climb up, then bushwhacked back to the trail, rejoining it just below the hut. A little adventure within the adventure. He REALLY wanted to climb those falls, though we only got about 80% up. Couldn't find a way up the last ledge or at least not one I was willing to chance. The mud definitely built character. It was actually fun for the first mile maybe. RHAB even enjoyed face planting in it. By the time we got to the shelter, no one wanted to see any more of it. The novelty had worn off. Post hike meals are usually either pizza or burgers. This time the kids used their special long hike privileges to order both... Burgers and a pile of fries, followed by pizza for dessert. That was the price of their forgiveness. Money well spent. 😁
@@northeastfamilyadventures9186 Oh I see...your bushwhack was worth it for the view of that part of the falls! Face plant...oh no. My kind of folks...it's usually pizza and/or burgers for me as well...haha.
I also have my alarm set for 05.00 now when I am shipping out for the day. I remember you losing all that footage with the GoPro, how is that going now, you still having issues? Looked a rough trail to follow, especially for an eleven mike hike, so your kids did real well. Must admit, I would love to own a house on Zealand Pond, great Falls there too, real exciting place for kids to climb. It's the muddy time of year and dead feet need a good rest every now and again, looked tough going, so well deserved meal of 'anything they want' I would say! cheers Alan
GoPro is still being itself. I switched out the memory card right after the falls because I had lost a good 5 clips at that point, and the errors were becoming uncomfortably frequent. Less errors after that. The video after this one, it had a full memory card meltdown that forced me back to the car to get the spare card, and that was after a full and complete slow format. Some days I get no issues at all, and others it can be such a pain. This is actually a relatively mild time of year for mud... Usually. We've had an abnormal amount of rain lately, so things have swelled a bit. Normally, mud season is late spring when the melting snow saturates everything Still, that trail after the rock garden was atrocious. When we did it in August, it was a little wet, but not like that. Legit took us an hour longer to get through that section this time than last time, that's how silly it was.
Do you ever wonder if your family will turn on you when you’re out there narrating to the.camera? When they are tired. And tired of you. 😆 11 miles is a lot! I couldn’t get my family to do that right now. I still need to get out there and do that stretch. Looks just lovely.
Someone once told me that if you tell a kid they are something enough, they believe it and become it. I tell mine constantly how I think they are tough, hardcore little sh... adventure types. It has almost rubbed off. They do complain sometimes during the trips, but when some friend or family member asks them about these adventures, boy do they love to talk about how hard they are. To hear them tell it, we face certain death almost every weekend, but somehow pull through. Sarah on the other hand, she enjoys the hikes, but HATES the camera. Had it been within her reach at Ethan pond, I'm positive she'd have chucked it in. 11 miles is pretty much our limit on a day hike at this point. We've done a few 8-9 mile treks, which is a pretty comfortable distance for us now. We've come a long way from a year ago when we thought 5 miles was a long hike. And yes, this is quite a nice stretch of trail. There's some beautiful country in that Zealand area. I think next time we head in, instead of a point to point, might make a lolipop out of it and hit up Zeacliff and catch the notch on the way down. More elevation, but less swamp trail.
To have made that a TRULY epic adventure, you could have made a left turn off Ethan Pond to go up and over the Willey Ridge Trail and end at the Highland Center. Talk about some Type 2 fun! ;-) Seriously some great footage there!
Yeah, with the condition the kids were in by the time we got to the pond, that could have crossed into type III. For those with longer legs the 2 miles before the shelter were a mildly uncomfortable dance. RHAB spent that 2 miles hopping and jumping to places I could just step over to. He was so done. I had actually considered routing up to Zeacliff and crossing through the bottom of the notch. I thought it would be cool, but we were already pushing our luck with the 11 miles. 10 seems to be about all we can reliably get out of the kids in a day hike.
@@northeastfamilyadventures9186 Yep, I understand that. When planning a hike I always plan to the "lowest common denominator". And the slowest hiker takes point to set the pace. That is usually ME on the downhill!
Awesome hiking adventures my friend. Keep it up and more vidz to come.

They got cheeseburgers for dinner, and pizza for dessert. They took the "anything goes" for dinner deal pretty seriously!
@@northeastfamilyadventures9186 LOL they deserved it! Take Care - Melissa and Curits
Nice work team! I live for the misery
Nice hike
Thanks!
😊 👍
👍🎉😁
I really like your videos, long_lasting interaction registration💖😀
Thank you very much!
P.s what was the chosen victory meals? 🏆🍲🍔🍕🍗
Burgers on the way home with Pizza for desert. 😂
@@northeastfamilyadventures9186 sounds great lol 😆 🤗☕
@@TeaInValhalla Yeah. There is no other circumstance under which such a meal would ever be provided. They knew it, and took full advantage.
Do you ever wonder if your family will turn on you when you’re out there narrating to the.camera? When they are tired. And tired of you. 😆
11 miles is a lot!
Talk about some Type 2 fun! ;-)
Seriously some great footage there!
