Our first home was about 900 sq.ft. After having 2 kids, we had the opportunity to get some land and build a house. We decided on one that was about 1550 sq ft. It was a challenge to find a builder that would build a house 'that small'. "Small" is completely relative. I love your ideas.

@@SilverGirl-925 we purchased our house from the original owner who was 99 at the time and they raised two children in it. We have one bathroom, unfinished basement and thank goodness some attic space. I love the house just big enough for the two of us. There’s no den or family room either. 😀

The cost of utilities is a HUGE deal when you own a home. We pay about $300/month on average for gas and electricity for our 1100sqft house. My friend pays close to $500/month on average for electricity alone for her almost 2000sqft.

I grew up in a 1300 square foot home. However, downstairs (which was the basement, with the same amount of square footage as the upstairs) we had my brothers two bedrooms, family room, storage room for home canned food from the large garden my dad grew. Then there was a full size bathroom and a large laundry room. Technically the basement doesn’t count as square foot space, but honestly it doubled our square footage, and we used it. I think when people say you don’t have a small home it’s because they know you have a basement where you have useable real estate. I’m assuming your laundry room is down there, and a place to store over flow items, Christmas stuff, luggage, etc. I think a lot of people would like to see how you use your basement, because those of us that grew up with one know that it definitely adds to the useable space inside of a home. You do a fabulous job with the small space upstairs. Buying the right furniture and accessories makes a world of difference in what we can manage in a smaller space.

I have a theater background and tend to pull inspirations from there. Since backstages have limited space, I think my home the same way too. A lot of theater set pieces tend to serve multiple functions. It's one thing in one scene, and you flip it over and it becomes another piece for another scene, etc. I also prefer things that can expand, collapse, and be quickly transformed without additional tools. That's also what I look for with my various items too. If you have limited space, it means you are always transforming the space as situations arise, and you want the cost for that to be minimal. So I really relate to the multi-purpose part.

People who say your home is not small are not living in reality. Especially for a family of 5. It is small, but you use it amazingly. My husband and I have almost 1,700 sq feet and I feel like it’s small! But thank you for your helpful hints! Love your channel!

I think technically a “small home” is 500-1000 sq feet (a “tiny home” is under 500 sq feet). But I agree that 1100 for 5 people is definitely small. It counts!
When I owned a home it was officially 1400 sq feet. It was fine for us when we had 4 people living there, one of whom was a baby. By the time I sold the house, I had at least 6 of us living there full time, along with several “part timers” (eg, shared custody kids) and 2 cats. That’s a lot more people per square foot, and it feels much smaller! By that point we had turned the dining room into another bedroom, and installed a door into the attic space for additional closet hanging space and storage, as well as storing things in the (tiny, wet) basement and 2 storage sheds in the backyard (we did NOT have a garage, though.) That was a lot of stuff to go through and downsize, at the end. Decluttering regularly is a great idea!

I just LOVE YOU and your genuine self !! I don’t really think you realize how much that’s truly appreciated these days, especially coming from someone whom is a younger individual with 3 young children. Kudos to you!! I’m not old ( at least I’d like to think I’m not; 😂 (probably a couple years older than you tops) however, I’d like to say not everyone is as “mature” and appreciative as yourself to “create” what you have in your house and make it your HOME 🏡…❤.. so many people lose sight of that these days trying to keep up with others or even moreso trying to outdo them, just to look good and make it a sudden competition. All it does is put a lot of pressure on our ourselves and even more on our children. I love your videos, your ideas and most of all you! I feel like you’re sitting in my living room talking to me 😂 and I have a friend for life! 😊
Plus I do have my coffee ☕️ in hand as I watch!! 😊

Great tips! I'm a recent retiree, and I have been having SO much fun re-organizing our "small-ish" home. A few months ago, I purchased an immersion blender with attachments. It is fabulous! I immediately was able to donate eight, small kitchen appliances! My appliance cabinet used to be stuffed full, but now it is well-organized with room to spare! Also, I put a vinyl placemat from $ Tree under my stand mixer so I can easily slide it in and out of my appliance cabinet. It has been so much easier for me to use! One last tip, if anyone has an appliance cabinet, AKA, "appliance garage" (with an electrical outlet) it's easy to add convenient lighting to the place with a small, plug in light. Any cabinet can be luminated with battery op lights.

We have a Murphy bed in our playroom. Most of the time it’s a play room and on occasion it’s a spare room. It’s perfect for a queen size bed. I love being in a small house because it has to change with our family. We can’t just keep spreading out and keeping stuff we don’t need-our home has to adapt to now. It keeps things more intentional.

Oh my goodness girl! Yes! That is tight especially for 5 people. Our home is about 1400 and we only have two bedrooms and 6 people! It was built in an era about 100 years ago and in that time homes were built with using every extra nook. So no extra space to cut into or use. It’s tight! Our baby is in our room and our three girls 6-12 are in one room. I’ve watched your channel for a long time. Basically since Miles was born.:) My favorite ones you make are the small space home ideas and creative ways to organize with no room and out of the box creative ways to change up your rooms! Like your desk you have in your bedroom! We have a tiny kitchen with one drawer! 😂what? I know. The last person to live here was a single man. We really have barely any room for food storage ,So we put our food in the basement ,at the bottom of the stairs on a shelf .
So many areas are multi use areas. I’m currently considering moving our dining room into our living room. We just are so tight in our tiny dining room now with 6 of us at our small table.
Currently our living room is a play room on one end and a tv/couch rest area on the other end. We separate it by a chair turned in towards the couch.
I love your DIY dollar tree videos and mom hacks so much! I also resonate with your motivation videos. ❤ honestly I just love you and your outlook, humor and honesty about everything. In a video you said in regards to a tidy home…”you are living here , for goodness sake you are living here.” about cleaning. Don’t we put so much expectation on a clean home that we see online?! It’s too much. So I now always repeat that to myself when I’m looking at the house at the end of the day. ❤❤❤❤ You are the best Kalli

Having grown up living in (and cleaning) a large house, I actually prefer the little 2bed apartment we live in now. I get inspo from "tiny house" double-duty furniture pieces, and it takes a fraction of the time to keep it clean and orderly when you're more aware of the space limits. It's also way less of a burden when you move home.

Batteries - I remember seeing an article written by a firefighter. His own home almost burned down as he had stored used batteries in a cardboard box, just thrown together. Two had touched ends together making a connection with enough energy still stored and they sparked and the entire box caught flame. Please store them side to side with no ends touching, for your family's safety.

A family of 6- coming from a 1100 sq ft and moving into 3200 sq ft, I couldn't believe the amount of stuff I could fit into my small home. When we moved into the larger home, I was shocked by the amount of stuff the came out of the small home and seemed to have just enough space for it to fit in the larger home. This was because I had systems and storage solutions that worked for a small home (installing extra shelves into closets, using every corner). With a larger home, items had room to breathe and spread out. I didn't need the 6 shelves in the linen, coat closet, and hall closet anymore. I love this video! Thanks for sharing. 😊

I've been working on organizing my home, it's 1200 square feet, and if there are too many things ou, I get ocd and feel the clutter closing in on me. 😮‍💨🤪 I try to declutter a little all the time. Just me and my husband now with our 2 small dogs but also accumulate a lot over the years. It's nice when people give Christmas gifts, but then it's just more "stuff" that I've got to find a place for.

You mentioned about decluttering one thing every day. I do what I call “soft decluttering”. When I open a drawer, cabinet, or closet, and it’s looking a bit untidy, I’ll take two to ten mins to quickly declutter and organize the contents. A closet declutter (usually the longest) can be broken up by shelf, or rack. It’s an easy, small effort/big reward method of decluttering.

I have a table in my eat in kitchen that seats six so the room that is supposed to be a dedicated dining room I don’t use as such and I found a great table on Amazon that when completely collapsedIt looks like a small console table, but it can be folded out to become a square card table, and then folded out even further to seat eight for special occasions, .So that room can be used for other things instead of just a dining room all the time I love the idea of having multifunctional spaces multifunctional furniture.

Love this. I have a kitchen cabinet I put the kids art crafts in because like you I kept walking into the other room to grab them. Now, that I think of it I also do my kids hair in the kitchen. Hair stuff going there now instead of the bathroom. Thanks!

Great ideas! Our house is just under 1100 square feet and we raised three kids here (now all married). We also used some of those same ideas, but some are new and helpful still. Getting rid of stuff that isn't being used is probably the most important thing. I love your channel and often share with our daughters, especially when you give ideas for kid stuff that they would use.

How utterly sensible you are! I love and totally agree with your use of your bedroom as a daytime office for your husband.
I live in a 300 sq ft studio with a bad layout and am perfectly happy because I live in my head and not for stuff. It works for me.

QVC was my Mom's pre-Amazon. 😂 I've always stored my measuring cups the way my Mom did which wasn't functioning when I cook a lot more than she did. Hanging them has been a great time and organizing solution.

When talking about the size of your home, the number of people who live there also has an effect on how it feels.
Also, if the main activity if everyone in the home is watching Netflix, all that requires is tvs in multiple rooms. But if the activities include gaming, football, skiing, cycling, etc, that stuff requires more storage space for the required equipment.

We are a family of 7 in a 1,100 Sq ft 1.5 story home that has only 3 small closets total. Fitting five kids in is not easy but doable with creative ideas on use of space like the ones you share here. I always keep my eyes open for additional ways to utilize what we've got so thank you for helping me think outside of the box here.

I love your video! Your home is definitely considered small for American middle class/suburban standards, and we live in a similar size house with only one kid and it feels “small”. These videos of yours are so helpful in keeping me honest with stuff that is actually important! Thank you for sharing!!

We've got 3 soon to be 4 kids in 775 sq ft and until recently a big dog too. I kind of enjoy the challenge of it, and it certainly forces us to be more minimal than we might otherwise be! Great tips, which we've also worked out over time, though I wish I'd have thought of the vertical space hack years ago!!

You gave me lots of ideas! My house I feel is small also. We did finish our garage and now we have about 1,500 square feet, but i run salon out of the bottom 1/2 of our house, that is my “office’ so we don’t “live’ in that space, I think we probably live in about 1,200 square ft. And you are so right about maximizing what you have. Sometimes the solution isn’t get a bigger home it’s less stuff.❤

We just decided to get rid of some items in our bedroom that are just causing clutter to put a small walking pad and a small weight bench with band and hand weights in there on one side. Additionally , since I no longer work from home we are going to get rid of my desk that has become a place for clutter and we are going to put a small but comfy chair there and make a little reading nook on that side. I am really starting to reduce things I have and go with things that give purpose to us in our home.

We have always only had one bathroom. Most of the time, we only have 4 people at home, but at special times of the year, we grow to 6. We have a medium size bathroom, but only one. We have a rule that you leave the bathroom as clean or cleaner than it was before you enter. This Meaning, our toilet gets washed every time anyone poops, not just airfresher.

Love this! I think people are starting to realize smaller homes are the way to go. Me and my husband share our 964 sq ft house w/ 2 dogs. I work from home and use my dining room table which is on one side of the living room. When I’m done working I just put everything away and it’s tidy again ! Love your content Callie!

We raised 3 sons with 1300 square feet. 3 bedrooms one bath. Was it tight, sure. But perfect for empty nesters now. We did add one bathroom 4 years ago. It would've been wonderful way back when but somehow we made it work.

Houses in the UK are a lot smaller than ones in the US, so we have to be quite creative with space.
A lot of houses don’t have utility/laundry rooms & have their washing machine in the kitchen. If they also have a tumble dryer that is often in the garage.

My boyfriend and I live in a one bedroom apartment and I work from home full time.... I am constantly de- cluttering but our place is now fairly organized and cozy- I do like your idea of shelving closer to the ceiling for storage of items used less frequently

Thank you for sharing these! They’re always so helpful! I hate people have been rude about home sizes. We’re a family of 6 living in 1500 square feet and we have to be really creative about space as well. My four kiddos share one room with a trundle bed to help save space and we use another bedroom as our school room/play room! They love it and have never complained. You do a great job sharing useful tips! I’ve learned so much about how to make my home more functional, organized and peaceful! Thank you! Keep it up! 👏🏽

I also love to make everything have dual functions. I find it odd when people have a something like a coffee table, that has no storage! What a missed opportunity to stash throw blankets and such. 😂

Thanks for the hints. Try living in the UK, most of us live in small homes so space and organization is so valuable. In my life I have found having children and grandchildren the biggest problem to keeping organized. My heart used to sink when I went into the lounge or a bedroom and found it a sea of toys.
