I discovered that the most important part of organizing is maintenance. Taking the extra few seconds to put something back is golden.

For me the idea of putting things away instantly doesn't work with my brain. But doing a 5-minute pick-up three times a day has the same effect and I find that far more manageable and less stressful.

I think this is my biggest problem! I’m not saying you have it but I have adhd & many people don’t know that this is one of the more problematic symptoms of adhd, just getting started. ADHD is an executive function issue which is why it’s a problem getting started and organizing your thoughts in order to figure out how to go about it. My point is that whether you have it or not, many people find it helpful to follow content creators, Drs, or others that talk about this stuff and give tips, advice etc on it

For upkeep, don't walk back & forth in rooms, have a basket. Anything that doesn't belong in your current room goes on the basket. When you move on to the next room, you take from the basket & put in if necessary. This way you don't get distracted before your room is done.

I never declutter because i dont allow clutter to begin with 😮 Friends say i have Ocd i think its called. The reason my home is always neat, tidy & clutter free is because its the way i was raised. I had a very strict disciplined military father who ran all 5 of us kids like a platoon of soldiers. All orders had to be obeyed pronto. Only sickness was the exception. We all did the dishes, mowed the grass & shoveled snow. We learned to cook, do laundry & how to iron. When i become an adult & lived on my own i had no problems how i lived at all. My entire work career every boss i ever had praised me for my organizational skills in being productive, saving time & money. For me its always just been a normal way of life. Before my father passed away from cancer in 2010 i thanked him for helping me & giving me the basic life skills to take care of myself & my son. Well this has been my story & wish all success in decluttering & any other chores you might tackle. Best wishes 😇💙

Sometimes I wonder if my kids would be different if I was more like your father. I grew up in a very tidy home. I’ve tried really hard to keep those habits alive in our own home and my kids just don’t seem to care. OCD is not just a fairly common preference for neatness. OCD is a debilitating anxiety disorder that can only be diagnosed by a qualified mental health professional. It consists of obsessional, intrusive thoughts, and/or repetitive behaviors, compulsions, that are difficult to stop. Sure, obsession with cleanliness, neatness, and order can be a symptom, but so can problematic hoarding.

One of my biggest organizing mistakes: I organized our pantry, but didn’t put labels on the baskets. I just assumed everyone would see what the baskets contained and they’d keep like items together. Nope. Chaos won after only a week or so. I was so discouraged I didn’t fix it for a couple months. Now that the baskets are labeled everyone knows what goes where. It’s been successfully organized for over a year now. 😍

    • @xchrysantha
      @xchrysantha 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

My mom has done this lol. We have very different ways of organizing and associating things. One time I used our PASTA POT MADE FOR MAKING PASTA to make *gasp* PASTA. She got SO mad at me because she always uses a strainer instead when it comes to three of the pastas we use (I can't even remember which ones), and a specific amount of servings determine which strainer she uses. When I tell you this wreaks havoc🤣
All of that is to say, what makes sense to us individually is totally valid, but we as humans sometimes take it for granted and forget that just because it makes sense to us doesn't mean it "makes sense." If that makes sense😅

A pile is where I put the stuff that I don’t know what to do with, don’t want to toss, and think “hey, I’ll fix it later”……knowing full well that I’ll probably never look at or touch again, unless I’m desperately digging for an all important thingy-paper needed right now because my life depends on it…..then the pile’s a mess to never be touched again.
What needs to happen is for someone to invent “the smart paper” that knows when it’s contents are no longer of any use, and voluntarily vanishes.

I like to work on one room at a time. And I usually like to start with my easiest rooms first to gain momentum.
If your house is really bad, (no judgment, we've all been there) Every day I start in the rooms I've already cleaned before starting a new room. It only takes a minute, but I get my already finished rooms back to 100% . If I don't do this I find by the time I finish my last room my earlier rooms can be bad again. And that's just demoralizing. It also helps to build a "tidy the whole house every day habit" which is important.

One benefit is I can't really see Pinterest post! LOL I can see other people's houses if they're lit correctly though. 1. Have a place for everything
    2. Have a process to put back everything into that place
    3. Have separate time included in your everyday life/ routine to clean, put away, and keep tidy.
    4. Have a weekly, by weekly, monthly time to do the bigger tasks
    5. Share the jobs within your family evenly
    6. Make it fun- it is not terrible if you’re enjoying it!
    Good luck!
Take time yo sit down with the family to have suggestions for changes- as they all live there!!!

I’ve been getting rid of polystyrene and cardboard boxes over the last few months and filling the bins each week. Couldn’t believe how much there was as I’ve been decluttering for 7yrs and I’m organised. (Some was left over moving boxes.) Also getting rid of the ‘what if’ stuff and that’s been 100% trash rate too. It’s been helping me go through what I thought was sentimental too. My op shop is going to have to open an 80s section. So freeing!

Great ideas! Thank you so much for the unrealistic expectations section. There’s just no way you can have the time, money, and energy to keep a home spotless with small children. I tried in pre-Pinterest days. You can’t control the gifts coming in. Each developmental phase seems to require more stuff, too. It’s overwhelming because it’s overwhelming!
I ended up copying my kids’ preschool; the school had centers for each activity. I called them departments. When someone would ask where’s my book, I would say in the book department-the bookcase. Where’s the glue? In the glue department in the linen closet. I whipped up baked goods in the baking department. It did not produce organized adults, but it did save my sanity and make my life much easier.

I am currently doing it all wrong. Reorganizing 450 sq ft apartment all at once. Everything is all over everyplace. But that is me. I sort out the things you do not see, like closets, and work towards the general mess. I am praising myself for seeing the piles go to where they need to go. I am taking the time to put quick masking tape labels on everything, later on I can think about making circuit labels . A lot of the crazy happened when I brought in a LOT of craft materials from my old house. I have been at it for weeks, and I do not recommended it for anyone, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and my spaces are so much more organized. So the moral of the tale is, you may have to go about things a way that makes it worse until it gets better. Once this overhaul is finished I can organize like a normal person.

So when I went to get boxes/bags for some of them, my mom came along, saw multiple stacks of books, packed *all* of them in a big box and put it in the garage. :I She was so happy to help me! So I thanked her and after she left, I had to dig the box out, resort again -- and then I was done. Lesson: always make sure you are helping, not hindering.

For kids toys I always got my kids involved. I didn’t say, “go clean up your toys”, I was specific. I would say something like, “put all the Legos in here and tell me when you’re done”. Then, I would praise them and have them do the next small task. They learned how to clean up and it gave them a sense of accomplishment as well. Every mom I shared this with has thanked me.

I don't know how many rooms (bdrms, living areas, bathrooms, storage areas, closets, linen closets) you have, however, the 1st thing I would do is decide (on paper) what sorts of things belong in what "room/area".
Then, I would try to tackle 1 shelf/cupboard/box/pile every 2nd day (maybe 1/2 an hour or less).
Make a box/basket/bin for each "room/area" and take it there... little by little, you'll get everything into its space.
Then, make the decisions of donating or keeping space by space... you will eventually be happy with the home you've created for yourself.
Also, don't be afraid to step away from what a space is "intended" for.
My "living room" is a library because that is what I love.
I once used a China cabinet, bookshelves, and a curtain to create walls in my formal dining room, so I had a bedroom in a house that didn't have enough bedrooms for me and my kids.
I am physically disabled, have a heart problem, and audhd, so I understand the difficulty in all the ways... try to have fun with your space and make it truly YOURS. 😊

They have been intimidated by Pinterest, magazines and TH-cam interior decorators. I am happy to help them choose products that will enhance their home but I always remind them that they can have their the way they want it to look and do not need to be a slave to fashion and trends. Great video! When I started decluttering I was overwhelmed & tended to get nothing done. It was more...move it to another place until I decide what to do with it. So 1 evening I had about a half hour to myself before bed & I caught my medicine cabinet out of the corner of my eye as I walked past the bathroom. Lightening bolt! I decluttered it within my half hour. The next night it was my spice drawer and my jewelry box the next. I found the key for me! Small bites of time.
My other mind trick (for me) is I ask myself if I could only keep 100 things, would this be one of them? It really helped with sentimental items. Or I pretend Im moving to a smaller house. Would I take this?
Anyhow, it took 2 years but Im pretty much done. Now Im maintaining. I stopped shopping just to shop & I watch what I bring into my home.

I have had my fabric boxes out in my living room for.. ok well we don't need to say how long... and just got overwhelmed when I first pulled them out to measure, fold, catalog and organize on boards to make them easier to see and find. Between your advice of breaking the task down on a list of what needs to be done as smaller goals, and Cassy from Clutterbug talking about setting an alarm for an hour and just do what you can, I made progress on this eyesore. I didn't get a noticeable dent, but I got started, and that felt good. Going to work on it more tomorrow and hopefully over the next few weeks... yes there is so much of it... I'll finally have made a "time to go" pile and the keepers on boards and organized.

And here it is: Saturday. My plan is to organize an entire room. But ... I'm going to check out TH-cam first. Because.....of COURSE that's what you do when you declutter, right? By a stroke of luck, I ran into this good video. I guess I was supposed to see this. I will turn off the computer after I complete this and.....DE-CLUTTER. Thanks.

I am a great organizer, except the bedroom! too funny, but true I'm out at 4 am and back in at 10 pm, I never see it. After my divorce (freedom) my brain kicked in to obnoxiously clean, I could finally get along with myself. So I re-figured out lifestyle needs etc, avid DIYer here. I made the cutest organizers from household things, made an art nook in my room to destress, (totally works), but what I ran into is a mom/family with sticky fingers and a need to undue my life's work because they don't understand me or my needs to have things a certain way. My way is reachable, useable and purposeful, I label everything. I cover my worktable cans with sticky paper, and my cardboard DIY's with sticky paper. I had open grid systems that my desk folded and unfolded (if I had company)one day it was gone, replaced with half smashed cardboard boxes and ziploc bags! Every visit they take things from my home every time I go on a trip or job contract away from my home family feels the need to put everything in their garage sales. I had nothing to sell because I kept all organized for seasonal uses. In a cozy 720sf (pretty large here) it was a well oiled machine. How do you get others to understand this is me, this is my way, and I really hate ziploc bags tossed in an odd box. One hand they think everything is about "space" (to them everyhings got to be wide open) well these stacked boxes may take up less space with everything shoved in, its not practical. at all, you can't use it. It feels like you're getting ready to move all the time (Ick, I've moved 8 times in 1 year before). Getting them to understand the cubie shelves, the wall paper and sticky paper, peg board, cork board, fabric, hangers, hooks, art bins, file organizers and magazine paper holders all cost money and a lot of time. Is there a way to accommodate differences and still be organized like you need to be (for sanity)? Interested to here other ideas or opinions how to control this type of (organized vs disorganized lot of space)situation. Not enjoyable at all.

Always put things away immediately after using them and to the place where they belong... this advice of a friend many years ago made my life so much easier... AFTER I organised my whole home in the way that really everything HAS a place to go! Don't let clutter into your life in the first place... you definitely don't NEED all this stuff.
When I buy a new Pullover one older has to GO instead. Just an example. 😂

Thank you so much for your content!! I have to constantly come back and watch videos like this. I had a pile on my dresser for months from emptying out luggage and purses in a pinch. This video made me not only get up and clean it, purge, and declutter but rearrange how my dresser was in my room altogether. Thanks Kallie!!

2:00 all I can think is “wow you have a spare room?? You’re so blessed!” A lot of us live in cities, in a 1 BR apt with a kid. You have to declutter for real! But anyway, your advice still applies, but it’s like 1 shelf/corner at a time.

My kitchen is very small. Luckily, I live alone and don't entertain. This cuts down serving items and reduces footprint and volume of small appliances and their storage. It also clarifies how to use storage space for everything.
I have a Pasta Cabinet that is mounted above my fridge; the difficult accessibility discourages me from eating so many carbohydrates that contribute to obesity and diabetes.
I have a similar-sized wall cabinet above my stove fan that has the exhaust pipe snaking through it. So little space makes it perfect for specialized Asian cooking ingredients (like spring roll wrappers, ramen, rice noodles, kombu, and bonito flakes) on the left and 'toppings' (like fried onion rings, croutons, and shaker cheese) on the right.
There's a Flavor Cabinet that fits on the wall between the fridge and the stove; it holds my spices, bouillons, packet mixes, salts, vinegars, Asian cooking sauces & misos, vinegars, and the like. Very handy for cooking.
Directly below the Flavor Cabinet is the Cookware Cabinet, which has a pullout bottom shelf and an adjustable upper shelf that holds a large plastic bin; here is where all my pots, pans, lids, skillets, baking dishes, ramekins, sheet pans, cooling racks, etc are kept.
The 18inch countertop above is too small for very much prep work, but it's good for resting items pulled from or ready to go into the fridge, as well as resting vessels before filling or while mixing. I also use it for making smoothies in my small rocket blender.
The cabinet also has a small drawer at the top I use as my Utility Drawer; rather than using open containers to organize the contents, I use several plastic boxes with adjustable dividers. Even the shallowest drawers can accommodate two of these boxes stacked one on top the other; my tiny Utility Drawer holds three boxes. (Calling it a 'Utility Drawer' helps me to keep out any item I might mindless toss in; everything in the Drawer has purpose.)
The other side of the stove is where my Beverage/Cereal Cabinet is, directly above the Microwave that's just wide enough to fit between the stove and the sink. I've decanted cold and hot cereals placed all on one shelf in this cabinet. I have my teas, hot chocolate, lemonade mix, sugars, syrups, honey, and powdered milk stored here, adding water from the adjacent sink and heating as needed in the microwave.
Hanging under the bottom edge of the cabinet is a small Joseph Joseph drawer, just big enough for MW popcorn.
The microwave affords me an 8inchdepth of countertop space about 2ft long. This is all the prep area I have available, but I have expanded that space by placing a 14inch-deep cutting board over the top drawer of the base cabinet below. The countertop steps up from the cutting board by about 1-1/2inches, which holds a place for bowls, utensils, measuring items, and foods to be prepped.
The inside of the Beverage/Cereal Cabinet door directly above has a magnetic bar holding my knives (handy to doing prep work). Above that is the leftover stainless steel backing for the magnetic bar; it holds magnetic hooks from which I hang my potholders (handy to the stove).
The base cabinet below the microwave is the only Drawer Base Cabinet in the kitchen.
The Top Drawer (when the cutting board is removed) holds my cooking utensils and most used prep tools, necessary to active cooking.
The 'Middle' Drawer holds the less-used utensils, gadgets, and prep tools.
The 'Lower' Drawer holds food storage supplies (vacuums, ziplocks, foil, parchment, beeswax wraps, etc).
The Bottom Drawer, being the deepest, holds oversized prep tools (colanders, salad spinner, immersion blender/accessories, etc).
The sink is outfitted with a rollup dish drying rack (useful to secure a moved cutting board while still in use) and a spanning dish rack (avoiding the need to have a countertop dish drainer/rack).
The last bit of 18inch-wide countertop sports a countertop ice maker (my fridge's freezer is too small to store ice or accommodate ice trays). Proximity to the sink makes water refilling a snap and there's a wall socket the other side of the ice maker from the sink, for safe access to power.
Between the ice maker and the sink is just enough space to hold a 6inch-wide ridged silicone glass drying mat, good for glasses, tea infusers, reuseable straws, and other small kitchen items.
Below the sink is the rest of the Sink Base Cabinet. If I should ever own my own home (I currently rent), my first act would be to get a plumber to reconfigure the pipes under the sink as flat to the back wall as possible. Then I would get a carpenter to install a pullout shelf the width and depth of the sink base cabinet. (In fact, I would outfit ALL the base cabinets with pullout shelves; it's the most efficient way to utilize all that cabinet depth, especially for the elderly).
On the left side of the Sink Base Cabinet is installed my Ikea pullout garbage 'can'. My kitchen is a galley kitchen set along one side of the walkway from apartment door to living area. The kitchen faces the bathroom door (that opens out into that walkway) and the door to the only closet (also opening into the walkway). Having tried for several years, there really is no affording space on the floor for a garbage can, so putting the receptacle inside this cabinet was the best thing to do. It pulls forward and lifts out for removal and replacing bags; quite handy.
On the left side of the cabinet is an enameled 2-tier pullout for storing cleaning supplies.
In the center there is more cabinet bottom space for storage.
At the top of the cabinet opening, across the full width of the cabinet, is a tension rod for holding a roll of plastic trash bags and to hang cleaning tools and spray bottles.
On the inside of the cabinet's right door is hung a basket for sponges, extra Dobie pads, copper scouring pads, Swedish washcloths, spray counter cleaner, and dishwashing squeeze bottle. Putting these things here keeps the area around the sink and faucets clear and uncluttered.
To the right of the Sink Base Cabinet is a mirror of the Cookware Cabinet, configured with the same bottom pullout shelf, adjustable solid shelf with large plastic basket, and a shallow Drawer at its top, just under the countertop with the ice maker on it. The shelves are for lesser-used small appliances as well as storage for all small appliance accessories.
The drawer at the top is the Dining Utensil Drawer, for flatware, reuseable straws, chopsticks, etc.
Across from the Appliance/Accessories Cabinet is the Appliance Tree; this storage unit has a quarter-round footprint and stands about 7ft tall, efficiently making use of an unused corner. The theory is that many of these appliances are too cumbersome by weight or volume to drag out of a base cabinet so ease of access would increase their use. Another thought is that being more visible, instead of shut away in a cabinet, might encourage use of these appliances. Here is stored my stand mixer, crockpot, rice cooker, citrus and vegetable juicers, and several Dash mini appliances.
Above the Sink Base Cabinet and the Appliance/Accessories Cabinet is the Dish Cabinet.
The Bottom Shelf holds the daily use dishware (plates, bowls, glassware, tea items, and servingware.
Slipped over the Bottom Shelf, next to the microwave, are cup hooks, holding mugs.
The Middle Shelf is where food prep vessels are kept: mixing bowls, batter bowls, large measuring cups, microwave cooking containers, etc.
The Top Shelf is where less-frequently used containers are kept: Mason jars, thermoses, lunchbox, bento box, tiffin, etc.
