I've always lived in smaller, quirky kitchens. Not those Instagram perfect ones. Sure they pose a lot of issues, but I find there are lots of ways I can also make them work for me with a little planning. I'm sharing some products, tips, and hacks I use to keep my small kitchen more organized and make it best function for me.

Thank you for understanding that most of us do not have Pinterest or IG kitchens or homes. Yes my home is nice and clean and cute but its normal. Its not a million dollar home. It’s a 150k home with one bathroom and 4 bedrooms. We live normal. I shop at target and T.J.Maxx and boutiques. Not Saks or Nordstrom or LV lol. I love that you are just like most of us. I love that you are real and relatable. Please never change!! ❤️❤️🙌🏻

Thank you for this video. I live in a rental. My "pantry" is a cabinet my coworker gave me for free. I made a makeshift "island" to have more cabinet and counter space. It's easy to organize your kitchen if you have a giant home. But most of us are just trying to work with what we've got. 😆

I too use an old bookshelf my friend gifted me when she moved to store things like cans. If I had one more floor to ceiling cabinet I could put all my food and appliances in there.
And all you see on the internet are people with extra pantries (not something we usually have in Europe) or like 3 different upper cabinets for mugs and glasses and tumblers and one drawer for utensils and one for silverware, etc.
If I'd that much space I wouldn't be watching organisation videos 😅

We hit the road in our RV right after rona hit and our timing couldn’t have been better. 😅 It was a massive downsize for us but FT RVing has freed us in so many ways. We thought we’d do this, “until things calm down,” but I honestly love it. That said, the tiny kitchen has presented many challenges, but I think I’ve figured it all out. It is NEVER going to be a Pinterest kitchen because it’s so small and my husband and I are both chefs (training our twelve year old to cook and be self-sufficient on top of that), and we eat a whole food, organic diet and use no nonstick or plastic. We gained a whole lot of food storage space when DH ripped out the bulky microwave. 😂 Everything in its place is critical for functioning and sanity in here.
I’ve had the big kitchen with negative space around each item in the cupboards, the gorgeous pot rack, several sets of photo-ready dinnerware, and everything grab-and-go. That is a different world from tiny kitchen living. My Visions cookware is stacked in a deep drawer so the pot I need might be on the bottom and I have to take everything out to get to it. There is no grab-and-go! We use Corelle dishes now because they stack well, they’re clean with no potentially toxic glazes, and they’re lightweight but durable. Almost all of our cast iron and All-Clad was left in storage but one saucepot hangs on a hook and three pieces are stowed in the oven, and that means things have to go *somewhere* when I use the oven. It ain’t pretty! But it’s clean and functional.
I now want to have a purely functional kitchen when we eventually settle down and build our small home. I’m never going to have the big home to clean again. That’s a nightmare. RV living has spoiled me to having everything in easy reach and less to clean. I wish more people could experience this freedom.

I use vertical space as much as I can, I add shelves on the walls, inside the cupboards, or baskets inside the doors as you demonstrated. And forget about round storage containers that create wasted space, get square or rectangular ones! Perfect also when you store prepped meals and leftovers in the fridge and freezer.

I got expandable drawer dividers and liked them, but wanted lots more so I cut up cardboard boxes, folded them over and made them about 3-4 inched too long so I could fold the ends to opposite directions and tape them to the inside of the drawers. Custom fit, and can be cute if you use colored cereal boxes or top with colored tape.

Kallie, you've got some great ideas & tools to get a kitchen organized well. Here's one little thing I like to do. For my spices,I like to sort them between sweet & savory. If I'm baking, I know which group they're in, & the same for general cooking. My favorite item you showed was the skillet organizer! It's perfect for any kitchen, big or small!

    • @barbarastraley6168
      @barbarastraley6168 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I do the same with my spices. They are kept in a drawer so I use multi-colored labels to write and stick on the tops of the spice jars to make it easy to just look down and see what each one is without pulling them out. They are grouped by color. Pink labels on the “sweet” spices, orange on the hot/spicy ones, green on the herbs and yellow on the blends (Old Bay, herbs de Provence etc.). This would also work well with a rectangular plastic basket on a shelf.

    • @Ashley-li5yv
      @Ashley-li5yv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Interesting. I have two bins for my spices. The ones I Mos commonly use, and the ones I less commonly use. I don't have the time to buy and label and fill up a ton of spice bottles that don't hold all the spice anyway so the bins work just for for me. And I usually remember what the bag looks like anyway.

Some great ideas in here that I plan to pass on to my daughter who lives in an apartment. You will love your new kitchen...we bought a 70's house about 5 years ago and 3 years ago we renovated the kitchen into my dream kitchen. My kitchen is original from 1972, so I definitely feel your pain on the quirky cabinets LOL. I don’t have adjustable shelves, but shelf risers are a game changer for me. I also ended up getting the most minimal stackable set of cookware that I could get, since we were replacing our old set. I actually own that same silverware organizer and absolutely love it, and now you have me thinking about buying a second one to organize things like peelers and mixer beaters and things like that, the little things that can get lost in a regular utensil drawer sometimes. We use bins everywhere in our kitchen, and they’re especially great in the lower cabinets and also in weird, awkward corners. One other important thing that a lot of people forget is to measure before they buy containers, because it helps to really maximize the space that you have, especially if you do have a smaller kitchen without a ton of storage. It’s amazing what an extra inch or two of storage in a cabinet can do!

Labels are amazing. Hubby resisted it when we moved into this home 19 years ago but 2 things that really helped was the fact that I labeled a shelf for our son's appropriate snacks which helped when we had a sitter, and our wall-o' light switches ( 3 seperate switch banks, 2 of which had 3 switches each) 7 in total. It STILL helps us not turn off the power to the area of our home that powers the pellet stove. When accidentally turned off, it sometimes smokes up the house begore relighting quickly and sets off the smoke alarms. Not pleasant for ANY of us, especially my dog who is terrified of Thunderstorms etc.

I literally just bought and installed the exact same white drawer dividers in my daughter’s dresser last week! I also just received my order of very similar bamboo drawer dividers for the kitchen but I haven’t installed them yet. Thanks for always having the most realistic/more relatable content. You’re great!

Great ideas ! I like risers; I use them to give a little separation between large dinner plates and salad plates, bowls and mugs, etc. It makes it so much easier to access dishes and put them away. You don’t have to lift heavy dishes to get what you want. I also use pretty wrapping paper or dish towels under drawer dividers.

I would only paint the bottom cupboards with the lighter green. The darker green (IMHO) might make the room appear too small. It almost looks black. But like I said, this is my humble opinion.

Loved this! Can u please do a kitchen tour before ur renovation? We've seen video clips & shelves here & there, but not sure if we've seen only the kitchen all at once (maybe I'm wrong). It Would be fun to see before and after

Had my kitchen cabinets repainted a couple months ago from dark finished wood to white. Just FYI, you might consider using the dark green as an accent & not on all the cabinets. It later may feel too dark. I have a kitchen about the size of yours. Oh… and I got a pan organizer at a big box store & to my dismay not all my cast iron fits in it. Yours looks like the spaces are wider. Love your organization vids & all your hacks. Thanks!

Love this!! Thank you 💙 For your pot lids, you could use command hooks on the cabinet door. Use 2 at the bottom of the lid. Heavier lids might need 3 (one on top). I love that the lids are not taking up cabinet space.

Great video. The storage in my 1950’s kitchen is plentiful but not specific like the new kitchens. One of the best organizers I found for my sheet pans was a chrome cutting board/bakeware organizer I bought from LTD Commodities. I bought two. Now my sheet pans no longer lay on top of each other, which is a pain when trying to pull out one of the bottom ones. Now they are on their side and easy to grab and to get to. Your videos have gotten me so organized. Thank you!

Thanks to you, I got my knife block off of my counter. Looking forward to future changes to using my weird space since our kitchen renovation is getting pushed back thanks to the current sky high material costs.

First of all, your videos are so well made - straight to the point, very simple and clear. It focuses on the objective and what really matters. Please know that it’s very much appreciated and enjoyed. 👌🏽
I’ve realized that simplifying a kitchen and making things practical are always a win. I love my small kitchen and have maximized just about every space to make the most of it. The good thing about that is that everything is within reach pretty closely and it makes keeping things tidy a lot easier. When I was younger, cooking used to intimidate me.
Now while I prepare food, I enjoy listening to music, a good book, a great interview, or a discussion on a topic that is new or I’m unfamiliar with. Sometimes I’ll even make myself a drink and enjoy as I food prep. I never imagined how much joy would come from things done in the simplest ways.
Over all all, I can feel intention in the content of your videos and that is such a beautiful energy. Much respect and thank you for that. You’re such beautiful human, with a beautiful family, creating beautiful things in such a beautiful space. ❤️ Gracias. 🙏🏽

Light colors expand your space, dark colors contract your space.
Bright, happy and tropical is uplifting.
    White appliances add visual space.
(The stainless fridge box is black and sucks the life out of the kitchen.)

    3 things:
    1. My kitchen is new but it doesn't have many drawers or adjustable shelfs like the new, modern, fancy kitchens do since is an inexpensive model that came with the house- so these tips helped a lot.
    2. A lot of people on YT are talking about stocking up on food before "Hyperinflation", what do you think about that, or how do you handle it with a smaller space???
    3. I also love the tier organizers, but I as well can't help thinking about the wasted space underneath. Love your tips, thank you!😊💕

I have really appreciated your tips on cupboard door organization. The kitchen in this house has considerably less storage than our tiny 100 year old bungalow did back east. I bought the Dollar Tree command hooks several different sizes and attached the Dollar Tree trays to the inside of our cupboards, and walls of our pantry. We both cook and bake, so no way to declutter spices and baking items. But, unused small kitchen appliances and tools are donated!! Thanks for all the great suggestions. 👍
