  • Today's video is a care guide and species profile on the Malawi Hawk (Aristochromis christyi). Malawi Hawks beautiful cichlids from Lake Malawi, with awesome coloration and behaviors that really stand out in a tank. Malawi Hawks are in the predatory hap category of African cichlids, and they look great with other haps in an all male display tank, or in a breeding group.
Due to their predatory nature, they shouldn't be kept with fish that are too small (such as small mbuna or community fish), or too different in terms of behavior (open swimming). Since you want to avoid territorial aggression and open swimming space with haps, it's best to limit décor in the tank.
The Malawi Hawk is one of my favorite fish of all time, and if they're kept correctly, I would highly recommend them! Let us know in the comments section if there are any other African cichlids you would like to see a profile on!

Hi guys I've kept haps for over couple of decades I had a 300 gallon had to move into a small apartment now I only have a 5 x 18 x 18 kept only my favorite ones nitrate level of 10 parts the fish are all colored up and looking great some people say that this tank is too small but the fish are proving those people wrong love your vids 😊👍👍

I've always loved these fish but they are definitely not for me. I really miss my big tank. I had Frontosa, Yellow Labs and Kribensis in there. I think they all got along so well because I got them all at the same time and they were really little. That's going to be one of my first setups when I can have a big tank again.

It's definitely one of my favorites for sure a must have. I happen to have one and he is a hugh blue faced bruiser. I have about 20 fish or so of different male specimens others like a trout, fossocromis and red empress plus many more high sought after africans. Just to give you a idea. Not a single nipped fin in my tank all getting along which as you know is not so easy to achieve in a chiclid tank.Love your podcast. Don't always chime in. Later bro.
