Hi Rocco! I wanted to say thank you so much for your detailed videos! Last week my dad asked me to help him sell his old Sportster 1200 XLH, but he couldn’t get it running. It would turn over but just would not fire/start. We were going to just sell it as is but I decided to give it a go at repairing it myself. Let me preface this by saying I had less than zero knowledge or motorcycles and am also female (not that females can’t be mechanics or ride Harleys, it’s just not as common). We started with a new battery and spark plugs but no luck. Then we siphoned the gas and put in fresh, still no luck. My dad didn’t know what else to do so I started searching online. I came across your video on how to replace the petcock. I followed your steps and found that the petcock was fine but the fuel filter was full of sand so I cleaned it out. Still nothing. Then I followed your video on cleaning the carburetor. Even though my tools were lacking, I was able to: take out the carburetor, clean it top to bottom (more sand in the main jet), found a hairline crack in the fuel valve that you warned about and replaced that, found out the choke didn’t stay out like you said it should and had bad threads so replaced that, replaced the gaskets in the manifold and back of carb, and removed the gas tank to clean out the excess sand that seemed to be an issue. This evening, although it was a bit of a struggle, using your videos I was able to put it all back together and to my shock and delight the bike started right up! Tomorrow I’m going to attempt an oil change, but I think with your help I’ll be fine! The part that you might find the funniest is that I’m a little intimidated by the bike when it’s running so I did all of this without knowing how to even start it myself, had to ask my dad when I needed it! Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you and keep up the great work! If I can do all of that from your videos than you are definitely a great teacher! - Missy
Thanks Rocco, I tested with the vacuum pump and it held pressure, but very slowly went dropped pressure a bit, so I am assuming it may be in it's way out and ordered a new one at the Harley dealer today. Guess we'll see how it goes.
This is the second video of yours I have watched. Excellent narration but the best part is you narrate *while* you work vs. 5 minutes of talking before the work starts. I have learned a ton and now have my 2001 XL back running after it had been sitting for 4 years. Well done sir and many thanks.
“Don’t get crazy” 😂 cracks me up every time! This video was so helpful. My gf and I have been following along with our Harley and having a blast. Thank you a for the helpful videos
Thank you for this Video. I had just picked up a 2000 888 Sportster that has only 474 miles on it but has sat in an unheated garage since 2003! At first couldn't get it started, it would turn but not start.. I narrowed it down to the Carb, but didn't know where to start on carb clean/repair... the few manuals I had were very un-clear! Thank you again for your Saving Grace!

This video saved me a lot of $ and time. I've been trying to figure out why it won't run right for months. I was about to load it on the truck and take it to a shop when I started watching this. I put the slide together backwards just like the one in your video. Bikes on the road!
You are the man. Thanks so much for your videos. I was cleaning my sportsters carburetor. And got stuck putting the too back together. So I grabbed my tablet and watched your video. I got it back together and as you say. It's runs beautiful. Thanks so much
Rocco, thanks a ton! Helped me get a Sportster running for the cost of a can of Carb Cleaner, appreciate your detailed instructions! You're a great teacher!
I really like how Two Wheel Rocco shows and tells exactly what he is doing! I really picked up a lot of info from his videos. Please keep up the good work! Jerry
Thanks for the in depth video, and the phone call! Bought a bike that clearly had a carb issue like you described, only ran on choke...and sure enough idle jet was totally gummed. Cleaned all jets and passageways...reassembled and fired it up, no more choke needed except to start. Thanks again...ride safe!
You are the men, I will folow all your step, But like you said be careful, with the bolts, was already in bad shape, now is stripped the "BREATHER BOLTS ", 14 mm dammed As soon i got fixed i will do the complete cleaning, and also the fuel filter in the tank, Thank you so much so clam so professional
Just watched the video, cleaned my carb and made my bike run. Before this i changed the oil, the spark plugs, the battery. Thanks for the help. I would not have been able to do it without this video!

@@TwoWheelRocco Off topic question: Actually, when I bought my bike the previous owner got some chrome polish on matte black on the engine. It has left really noticeable white spots. Any suggestions on how to properly get rid off/clean this part of the engine? Thanks for your consideration!

To be honest, You have the best and most informative videos about Sportster carbs that i could find over the internet. SUbscribed for life :) Because of Your videos i want to try to clean and fix my 2006 883 by myself instead of giving it to the mechanic. I have a strange problem that my Sporty is choking for a sec instead of accelerating when im trying to fast rev on neutral or sometimes just when i have to stop on the road and then accelerate on first gear. It's like engine stops just for a half second, looked like it dies and then it accelerates good. It only happens when i open throttle just slightly faster than normal on first gear. Today i cleaned whole fuel tank and fuel filter. It was pretty clean. Intake manifold doesn't have any leaks that i could see from spraying some wd-40 around gaskets. I bought it with slip on mufflers (i don't know the brand) and from what i know, previous owner only changed main jet for a bit bigger. From what i read it can be a pilot jet problem? I wanted to clean a carb and put bigger pilot jet, haven't looked there yet, but it should be #42 so i'm planning to get #45. Should i try this? Or maybe am i missing something? Could You give me any hint where i should look and what should i do next? Or should i just leave it to the mechanic? Thanks for any reply!
I would try the Air/Gas screw. Turn out and test ride 1/2 Then 1/4 see what works on that circuit. let us know how many turns it is? Make sure your air filter is nice and clean. no oil on filter. Let us know how this works out. Take a look at this video th-cam.com/video/kivgNpZWHeY/w-d-xo.html. Any questions just ask.
@@TwoWheelRocco thanks for replying so fast! The mixture screw is still factory sealed, so i need to drill through it tomorrow. Air filter is almost new, fresh and clean. I've seen this video before, but i don't think it's the same cause, my Sporty is idling really good cold with choke on (it can die when i rev to much on cold and then choke goes a little too fast a bit and then it decelerates and dies) and after engine gets really warmed up it runs on idle great. Oh and one more, in this season it looks like he got a little problems with starting up- i have to start the ignition 2 times for like 5 sec to start it. (It was 3rd time i started it after like 6 month or more winter break, maybe thats why?)I don't know it's somehow related..
@@TwoWheelRocco Fresh plugs installed yesterday too, forgot to mention, i will clean carb, just waiting for the new pilot jet and carb cleaner to come.
Just got my self an '82 FLH 1200cc. It's been sitting for 7 years so I'm going to try to drain everything, clean the tanks and carb, replace the fuel lines, and swap the battery to see where that takes me. Never been a gear head but hopefully with your videos this won't be too bad!

i have been following you for a while dude, i really like your videos brother and i use them a lot while i work on my 883 custom, it is a 2006 with 14,000 miles a real beauty. thanks for the videos and happy new year.
93 sportster 1200 bought it and it had baffles removed from stock exhaust and hypercharger k&n intake, other than that stock w/ 5k original miles. Cleaned carb, new gas, etc. Idles fine but won't take gas if I roll on the throttle (so not to use accelerator pump) and bike dies. I bought emgo slip on mufflers off amazon per your video review (hoping it will help solve the problem). I have tried the following pilot and main jet combos with better luck as they get bigger, but still not right... 40/170, 45/180, & 48/185 and adjusted the air screw in 1/4 turn increments from 3/4 to 2 turns out (with stock pipes). Will try the slip ons tomorrow, got any tips? No exhaust leaks btw, and already replaced intake seals and all vacuum hoses so intake leaks are sealed. New petcock so nothing is blocking the jets. Every time I replace something it gets a little closer but still not there. Think I might need to get a different intake next, but I'll see how the exhaust does first. Any advice appreciate, I know these carb bikes are finicky, thanks.
Rocco, when you give that sportster gas the slide moves up, you let off slide moves down, mine don't do that. when you give it gas the slide doesn't move, its a 2006 1200c the card is together correctly, and it shoots gas when you twist the throttle like it should, what do you think? and it is clean also
I would remove and clean your carburetor slide system. Make sure rubber diaphragm is free of holes and moves freely. What is your motor doing? Let us know how this works out. Thank you for your Sub. Ride Safe and have a great day.
So I just purchased a CVP premium tuner kit, also replaced the accelerator pump. I installed everything, however I think I have a small spring leftover about the size of the one that goes on the air/fuel mixture screw but a little smaller. Can you tell me what all gets springs? I put everything back together and the carb doesn't seem to be getting any fuel. It wasn't having any issues before. I put everything back together, turned the fuel back on and tried to start the bike. When i rolled the throttle nothing was coming out of the accelerator pump needle and after taking it back apart there was no fuel in the float bowl. Possible issues?
I would look at your Petcock vacuum line. That's what controls the fuel. Look at this video on how to test petcock th-cam.com/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/w-d-xo.html. Any questions just ask. Thank you for your Sub Joshua. Ride Safe and have a Great New Years..
Also are the “stock” screw sizes on the float bowl on the carb M4X0.7x8mm screws or M4X0.7x12mm screws. Looking to change out my old ones for newer ones 👍🏼
I would replace the pipe and see how it runs. I don't know what jets you're running or how your A/G screw is adjusted. install the pipes and will take it from there. Not a big deal. Let us know how it works out. Take a Look at this video. th-cam.com/video/Cjixbd1ctqY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=x5VxEVbPoCTzZX6s
Rocco, Your video's are amazing, and when i had my sportster i appreciated the knowledge you gave on the number of the factory jets. Just recently bought a 95 dyna fxdl and pretty sure the carb disassembly is the same, it has aftermarket kurican air filter and scremin eagle pipes. Could you give me some insight of what the factory numbers are for the jets, and what they should be for the aftermarket filter and pipes. I have looked everywhere and can't find anything. Thank you for all your help.
I would start 48 starter 190 main.. 1 3/4. turns out A/F screw. What was in this carburetor? Let us now how that works out. Thank you for your Sub Eric. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Rocco, Thank you so much for taking the time for answering my question. Its a 1995 dyna fxdl- has a 40 mm carb- kurican bloodline airfilter- screaming eagle pipes with baffles out. It has a 170 main jet, and 42 slow jet. They had screw at 2 turns out. ( I set it at 1 3/4 turns. Do the jet sizes in it sound right for air filter and pipes? I guess I am basically trying to figure out why my back pipe sounds like a bird chirping or a slight whistle. I know this coming winter I am going to put brand new Vance & Hines short shots on it and will ultimately be replacing the exhaust gaskets with it. Do you have any other suggestions on why that back pipe is whistling. It's not a metal on metal chirp, its coming from the pipe itself. I took the slip on off and it's still has that chirp/whistle.

Hi Rocco. Low mileage ‘99 883 that has sat for over 5 years bogs down bad on acceleration. Per your suggestion by email I replaced damaged accelerator pump diaphragm. Same problem. Wondering if accelerator pump nozzle is clogged from the sitting. Can the nozzle be removed from the float bowl cleaned? I saw a test where they filled the float bowl off the carb, pushed down the acc.pump rod and fuel squirted out the nozzle. Did not work for me.
Twist throttle and look at that needle. if it squirts gas your good. 5 years sitting probably clogged. Remove float bowl and with small vice grips at the base of the needle twist and pull to remove, it's a machine fit clean with wire that you used on idol jet you could put fuel in the bowl and use the accelerator pump with carb rod to pump, To see if it works without putting it on the carburetor on the bike.clean with wire that you used on idol jet and compress air to clean. Clean needle seat also. You could put fuel in the bowl and use the acccelerator pump to test. see if it works without putting it on the carburetor on the bike.when reinstalling make sure you point the hole in the needle towards the throat of the Carburator. Any questions just ask, let us know how this works out.
Ask 4 ur help again please. Pulled carb & You were right, the acc. pump valve, needle and the orifices in bowl were completely clogged. Carb cleaner compressed air and wire brush needle did the trick. UNFORTUNATELY Here’s what I see after around the block a couple of times; still bogs down then takes off, also now wants to stall when off the accelerator. Back home I find unused fuel dripping from air side onto filter and filter cover as if the acc.pump fuel not being used, and very black plugs. Last thing when I pulled carb off also wet on the manifold side. Ideas?
I would look at your float needle it's not seating properly and will having an overflow of fuel which is causing a very rich condition. That needle is located under your float. Remove the pin on the float and clean jet needle and reassemble. if it does not work the first time you can buy a new needle jet at HD Dealer for $23, Problem solved. I rejetted my 2000 1200 from 42 to 48. Learned 42 was drilled bigger then the 48..put in the 48. Think i lost main jet needle cvp collar wont know until tomorrow. But i do know my needle wiggles a little left to right and idle is super rich and take off in 1st gear is ruff now was fine before. Decel is so smooth and no carb farts with the 48 instda 42 but somehow its running like crap if i brap the throttle some black smoke comes out. Take off is mighty ruff. Hi Rocco. Thank you for your video about carburetor repair. I have Iron Horse Texas Chopper 107 S&S engine and I have an oil in the air cleaner filter. I replaced the oil and oil filter, 20W-50 as is in manual and the level is good as well, 2 inches from the top. Do you know what can causing this problem and how to repair it ? Kris
Happy to help. When these motors sit for a while, the oil cavitates to the dry sump in your motor from your oil can and when you start the motor after it sits for a while, the oil will escape through the breather and try to work its way back into the oil can. the check valve is allowing the oil to bypass it. It happens on most Harleys if they sit for a few months, some bikes could sit a week or two and have a little oil buildup in the dry sump in your motor, the remedy would be to start your bike and ride it once a week at least and you will not have that problem again do not overfill your oil can, This is what happens when this oil gravitates to the bottom of that motor you tend to put more oil in and this really aggravates the problem. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and all your support Kris. Ride safe and have a great day
I followed exactly what you did and put everything back together. The gas is on and when I pull the throttle, gas isn’t spitting into the carburetor and won’t start do you know what could’ve happened?

Hi Rocco. I apreciate your videos and have learned alot about my sportster from them. But i have a problem im not sure how to fix. The slide in my carb only pull when i give it full throttle. And there is an explosion if i give it more throttle. I have cleaned the carb, changed the slide and diaphragm because the white plastic on the slide was partially melted with a dent, changed the accellerator diaphragm. i plan to change the manifold gaskets. What can cause this? I have aftermarket V&H short shots exhaust and arlen ness big sucker airfilter on a 2001 883 sportster.
Happy to help. Your slide on a CV carburetor is vacuum operated. This means the bike has to be moving. When your sportster is at rest and you twist the throttle that's why the slide is not gonna go up, it might shake a little bit but it's not gonna go up. What jets are you running in your carburetor?. Thank you for watching and your sub desertsun. Any questions just ask. Ride safe and have a great day.
@@TwoWheelRocco Hi thank you for the fast reply. In the video about 18 minutes when you give it some gas. We can see the slide move up and down. I feel like mye slide does not react the same way. Im running a 50 pilot jet and 180 main jet. When not running stock exhaust and stock air filter. How should i tune the idle mixture screw? I seen the video you have about the issue. But that sportster is mainly stock. So you twist it to stock. Should i try a half turn or 1/4 turn more maybe?
@@eirikskogh What bike year and size? Sounds like pilot is to big. If you could send a video of the bike without the breather on it with you revving it up. To erocco3964@gmail.
Nice Job Rocco! I have a twin cam Electra Glide with 211 cams and a 95 big bore kit with a screaming eagle K&N filter and aftermarket Reinhardt's with true dual exhaust. The carb had a Dynojet kit in it and it appears they drilled out the velocity slide and of course changed the emulsion tube and the needle to an adjustable clip style with the Dynojet one that will not accept standard jets. The bike's only getting about 120 miles to the tank. I have put the CV emulsion tube back in but what jets do you recommend with this setup. Currently I have a 48 pilot with a 185 main jet. I am also putting the stock needle back in the new slide that should be here soon. What jets do you recommend with this whole setup? I really appreciate your time and knowledge on this matter. Just by putting the new emulsion tube and the 48 and 185 jets I almost have it up to 200 miles to the tank. Just would very much appreciate your input! Thank you Sir!!
Happy to help. Sounds like you have everything under control I would go with the 48 and the 185 main jet.as you are. 1 3/4 A/F screw. No more than 2 turns out. Any questions just ask. @@TwoWheelRocco Thank you Sir! I have the idle set between 900 and 1000. Of course when you first start her up, she needs assistance to stay running until she warms up a bit. Hopefully she responds well to the lower settings on the adj screw, maybe I can get her to over 200 miles on a tank! One more thing, I am replacing the needle with the old sportster needle, the N65C, I think, and add a few thin washers. I have read on some pages that that was the best needle for the CV carb. Hey Rocco, Thanks for these great instructional vids. I took apart my carb and rebuilt it. After I put it back together I started to notice on the freeway it would drag at higher speeds when I gave it throttle. Today it stalled out on me on the fwy and I barely made it home. Wondering what you think may be the issue? I did put a bigger idle jet in (a 47) and a bigger main jet (185), but not sure that would cause it to run so poorly. Please let me know what you recommend. Hello Rocco, Hopefully you have some advise for me. 03 Sportster 883, I have what I believe is a 185 pilot jet and 47 idle jet, had to upgrade a while back per hour advise and bike Idles smooth and runs great. I recently noticed that when I turn off the bike about let’s say an hour of riding, it sounds like it’s choking, or wants to start back up. It only does it when I turn off the bike. But if I turn off the fuel and let it be in a few second like that, it doesn’t do it or rarely. The mixture screw is at about 1.5 turns. Any idea what could be causing the bike to choke/stutter when turning it off?

Thanks again wish you were close i would just pay you to take a look lol
I would buy the manual on eBay for that 1988 model, I don't want to tell you something I'm not absolutely sure about. But 45 is a 1200 jet, how about the main jet, size. What exhaust and air filter? it all makes a difference. What carburetor did you buy? Did you buy one off eBay like Chinese $60 carburetor, that could be a problem. If the bike can start an idle, you don't have an ignition problem. You got a fuel curve problem. Check your accelerator pump that it's squirting and put the proper size jets in and that Carburator could be too much fuel. Like I said, if it idles, it's electronic ignition there's no points. it runs, Its fuel problem.

- Missy

I have the same issue with my ‘95 1200 Sporty but kind of intimidated about doing the cleaning.
Watched the video yet again today. Had my daughter do a full rebuild on my carb since the rubber parts were 20 years old. Starts and idles great now.

Try new plugs and clean carburetor, Let us know how this works out.

i have been following you for a while dude, i really like your videos brother and i use them a lot while i work on my 883 custom, it is a 2006 with 14,000 miles a real beauty. thanks for the videos and happy new year.
Thank you and have a great New Years.
You are on the right road. I like 45 / 180 What do you mean don't use acc. pump?

Rocco,
Your video's are amazing, and when i had my sportster i appreciated the knowledge you gave on the number of the factory jets.
Rocco,
Thank you so much for taking the time for answering my question.
I would start 48 starter jet 190 main jet 1 3/4. turns out A/F screw. eBay. www.ebay.com/itm/Carbruetor-Carb-Main-Jet-Pilot-Jet-for-Harley-Davidson-CV-40-XLH883-XLH1200/223662737958?_trksid=p2485497.m4902.l9144any questions just ask.. see how that works out.
Thank you, ordered them already. Do you think that could be causing the whistle sound coming from back exhaust?

Two Wheel Rocco thank you. I surely will let you know.
Two Wheel Rocco thank you. I will let you know. I’m grateful to you.
Im just trying to step in the right direction. Love ur content rocco!

Totally tore down my carb and cleaned it to your 2 videos, and with your extra tips you add in, I was able to see if they were Factory Jets. That's what I love about the way you do your videos.
Question: I seen you do the air screw and the turns for factory setting. As i was looking for my air screw, theres nothing there, it looks like it's sealed off. There's no kind of air screw that's visible. Just a metal plug like. Almost like it was built into the carburetor. Have you ever seen that?

Old carb had 180 main couldn’t find out pilot
@@jonathansantorelli4529 a new Carburator would start a idle and get you around the block. You have a problem with fuel, as in gas tank or Petcock. I'm will send you a video, test your petcock it's very common with these older bikes to have rusty gas tanks bad Petcock screens bad Petcock diaphragm. This is what controls your gas flow to your carburetor. Take a look. th-cam.com/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/w-d-xo.html. What year Sportster and how many miles?

Nice work; did you loosen the throttle cables before pulling the carb off the intake?
Happy to help. I did not loosen the throttle cables. And you'll see there's no need. Choke cable disconnect from left side bracket. Thank you for watching and all your support Luke. Let us know how it works out. Ride safe and have a great day.
Ok why do I have the middle pipe on my 98 1200 and most have 2 pipe s with the bigger slipe on
Happy to help. That's the crossover. That makes the bike they say run better. And later years they change it to the bottom of your exhaust system. Personally I think they are ugly. Get a new engine pipe or even a newer exhaust from Ebay and put slip-ons on. Pollution EPA I think just bad design. Thank you for watching Cory.
Having a hard time getting that pin out of the float. tried hitting it. wont budge. any tips?
you will need to use a very small pin punch. Make sure you take notice of witch way the pin is removed. look close you will see an direction arrow on carb. float towers. Support float towers with 1/4 deep socket, when removing pin. tap pin lightly. Let us know how this works out
@@TwoWheelRocco couldn't get her to budge that way so I used a center punch and popped right out. Putting carb back on I notice in the back there's a hose that splits into 2 hoses one end of the split looks like it belongs on something the other has what looks like a flat head screw....any help appreciated......
Back of carb. on top you will see hose nipple. That is where your vacuum hose goes. That hose starts at your petcock goes to a tee pipe, one end goes too carb. the other to advance solenoid. That has been block off with flat head screw. Hope this helps Jeff. Let us know how this works out.
@@TwoWheelRocco mine in 02 xl1200 is it possible the vacume hose goes on the other side of the bike and not on the actual petcock. There a nozzle I found when looking at the petcock its on a round plastic disk....
Oh it's the VOES...
Hi Rocco! I have cleaned idle jet and main jet, than sprayed the carburetor with cleaner. Put it back together. It idles pretty ok but chokes down to the full stop immediately when throttle. Also there's a little bit of black smoke and a strong smell of fuel. Any advice? It did stutter a little before but now I cannot even ride :(
What is your Air-gas screw set to. I like one and 1 3/4 out
@@TwoWheelRocco The air-fuel screw was left untouched. I didn't touch it at all.
@@pitusmetallica Still capped off. So you can't touch it?
@@TwoWheelRocco No no, I mean, when I was cleaning the idle and main jets, I didn't touch the air-fuel screw at all. So in theory it should be fine.
@@pitusmetallica air/gas screw has a lot to do with the idle circuit. This adds fuel to fuel circuit.. Sometimes that can get so dirty that it interferes with the running of your bike. Remove screw spray a little cleaner. in Be conscience of the rubber seal, spring in the washer. That's what I would do. Let us know how that works out.
awesome video as usual

Great work as always.
Thank you for your support. And have a great day.
Hey! Do you recommend doing a full carburetor clean like this? I feel like my bike needs some love. I don't know what they did to it in the past. It's a 1999. I'd like to do this. Or am I wasting time?
Taking a good look may make me feel better. You never know what's inside.
Im having a hard time finding out where to get the rebuild stuff for it. How do I know what to buy? There seems to be variety out there
First two as the video shows clean idle jet and main jet and put it back together. It ran good and now will run better. What was the problem with your Sportster?
@@TwoWheelRocco leaking gas into the air filter. And coughs while idling. No black smoke. Alot of build up of gunk around the bike im cleaning off.
@@kymberliemerrill8996 sounds like you have a float needle jet problem take a look at this video and start there if your bike idols and your problem is leaking gas then clean your float needle jet. if that don't work then just replace float needle jet, dealer part. or ebay www.ebay.com/itm/163857642285?epid=805712769&hash=item2626ad332d:g:wH8AAOSwJQdW-9jg. watch this video th-cam.com/video/tS_-M4RuWc4/w-d-xo.html. let us know how it works out.
I just bought a 2003 xlh1200 and went for a test ride around the neighborhood and the bike quit on me as I downshifted to make a turn. I pulled out all the old gas and just put in new plugs. (the old ones were very sooty. ) the choke is a little tight to push in and out. Do you think I should rebuild the carb? The bike has 778mi. Thanks for the video. Liked and subbed.
