There is a ton of footage for the 2011 Joplin tornado if you would like to see what an EF 5 tornado is capable of - lots of footage of the tornado, survival stories and before and after footage.
I’m glad you enjoyed this! I love the characters, the cinematography, the music score, and of course the tornado visual effects are awesome and super realistic, and look great for 1996! To answer your question, yes tornadoes are actually this extreme in real life. In fact, they can be even more terrifying. There was an F5 Tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma that was 2.6 miles wide. It was in a field, but if it was in the middle of a city it could’ve wiped it off the map. F-5’s have the power to debark trees, rip well-built houses and bigger structures completely off their foundations. They can even turn 2 by 4’s into 300mph missiles that can impale through steel! As well as carve mile wide trenches in the Earth several feet deep, leaving a long destructive path with nothing left but clay. They can also carry semi-trucks for miles and can make them orbit around the tornado like a satellite. And they really do make those loud roaring sounds sometimes, and most of the time it sounds like a freight train is right next to you
Thanks for the info! It just reinforces my thoughts of never wanting to be near a tornado 😃🤣 It's amazing and terrifying how destructive nature can be.
@@VerowakReactsvery true! I actually saw a tornado in person back in 1999 when I was 7. It was the famous F2 that formed in the middle of downtown Salt Lake City. I lived in the nearby county of Sandy at the time just a few miles away, and I just got back from a dentists appointment with my mom. The building was located up on a high hill overlooking SLC. Was super windy and stormy outside with hail everywhere and lightning, and mom and I quickly ran to the parking , I turned and saw the tornado and was so shocked I just stood there in disbelief, frozen. I remember saying “Mom! Mom! there’s a tornado!” And she didn’t believe me…. The thing was behind her and I said “no look!” She looked down and I remember her gasping and yelling. Tornadoes are pretty rare in Utah, and don’t hit cities very often. It was crazy
I used to be a weather spotter in Missouri. We provide the "ground truth" to confirm radar tracking for storms. Most counties in the US have formal and informal networks of weather spotters who report to the weather service observations on Amateur radio bands. In my case I was in St. Louis County and we have a few storms in the general area every year. 2011 was an especially bad year. A Tornado struck the airport causing considerable damage and shutting the airport down for days. One thing that is really cool is that this movie spawned a whole crowd of storm chasers. Some are really professionals, in it for the research or public safety aspects of it. There are others who are thrill seekers. In some instances the number of chasers cause traffic and safety hazards depending upon their mentality. But I like to think of myself as more a retired spotter. One rule they have though is called the "bent Neck" rule. If you have to bend your neck to look at it, get to shelter. In all my time spotting, I only saw one and didn't even realize it was a tornado. It looked more like a fog bank than anything else. It was a low grade tornado F-1 or F-2 wrapped in rain which makes determination difficult. I did have occasion to go to the US NWS Storm Prediction Center for the annual meeting of the storm chasers before it degenerated into an insurance seminar. Located in Norman, Oklahoma, its an impressive building which ironically has a cafe in the basement called the Flying Cow Cafe, complete with T-shirt sales. www.ou.edu/nwc/visit/cafe
A lot of ppl fail to realize how fucking great this cast was. Every single member of the team is a major actor/actress w tons of big movie and tv roles. Like Roach from “The People Under The Stairs”, “Cameron from “Ferris Buehlers Day Off” and Phillip Seymore Hoffman…
Rest In Peace Michael Crichton 1942-2008 Roger Ebert 1942-2013 Philip Seymour Hoffman 1967-2014 Richard Schickel 1933-2017 Bill Paxton 1955-2017 Ennio Morricone 1928-2020 Eddie Van Halen 1955-2020 Jeremy Lubbock 1931-2021 and Marilyn Keith Bergman 1928-2022, Roger Ebert and Richard Schickel were famous film critics, Eddie Van Halen, Marilyn Keith Bergman, Jeremy Lubbock and Ennio Morricone did the songs for this movie
40:43 There’s no tornado insurance (constant payouts are likely the fear of insurance brokers), but if you’re lucky, and the damage was large enough to wreck a few neighborhoods or a whole town, then the government (FEMA) will often pay out to rebuild after “disaster emergencies” like hurricanes or tornados. It takes years, though.
@@asterix7842 pretty sure he should know he's not gonna win a battle with an F1 tornado much less an f5. If you can't secure the door just drop down and pray. Your not stopping 250 mph winds .
FUN FACTOIDS: For those who didn't notice, the storm chaser who was cowering on the floorboard of the truck, in the drive-in movie scene, is Jeremy Davies. Two years after "Twister," Davies went on to play the part of Corporal Upham in the movie "Saving Private Ryan." Additionally, Alan Ruck, who plays the part of "Rabbit" the map reader, also played the part of Cameron Frye in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."
Thanks, Verowak! 🌪 Jan de Bont directed this one. You'd probably enjoy SPEED (1994), which he also directed. 🔸 The wonderful *Helen* *Hunt* had a small role in one of my favorite flicks which deals with temporal mechanics, PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED (1986), directed by icon Francis Ford Coppola. Ms. Hunt has a substantial role in AS GOOD AS IT GETS (1997), directed by James L. Brooks, which every cinephile should get around to, at some point.
I live in Kansas Wichita Kansas we all Kansas Oklahoma surrounding states we had to dodge these things this summer it was fairly active several tornadoes this year
The tornado hitting a drive in actually happened... 5 mi from where I live. Beaver county PA, the drive in was SpotLight 88. My family went to watch movies there. In the path quite a few businesses were destroyed. May 31, 1985. Deaths and injuries. It's now an outdoor fleemarket. The film based that scene on this true tornado incident.
To answer your question: yes, if you live in an area where tornadoes occur, you can purchase tornado insurance, and you can also purchase hurricane insurance if you live in an area where they are prevalent.
If you can afford it. Hurricane insurance has gone through the roof over the past decade or so. Probably because people build right on the coast now. Until the 70s there wasn't a lot of stuff built directly on the beach. In fact most places had laws preventing things being built there.
Yes you can get it for most Natural Disaster type events. But You forgot the parts about A it is an additional opt in policy, B annual premiums are prohibitively high (say 15k/yr for earthquake insurance in CA), C the layout is "supplemental" to your entire primary coverage being exhausted, D there is another deductible you pay first after that, and E it is mostly a laughably small maximum sum. That 15k premium CA coverage 10 years ago had a 5k deductible AND paid out 15k lol. So if you have 15k a year to PAY THEM you may as well just put that much a year into a saving account- since actually needing it may never come or only every decade.
If you're looking for another storm centered film I'd recommend 'The Perfect Storm'. Based off a book that was written about a massive storm in the early nineties. Great film
I saw this in the cinema with two big blowers in front of the big screen and a brand-new Dolby surround sound system. It was quite the spectacle at the time. 😃
I went to 5th grade in Wichita back in the 70's. We had tornado drills back then almost as often as fire drills. Went to my very first concert there to see Elvis. Mom and us girls moved back to Tucson, Arizona that summer...where I attended my 2nd concert that same year which was also Elvis (birthday present). Now I live in Texas. 😂 Another disaster movie I enjoy on this same subject starring Bruce Campbell is *Tornado.* "I've got to go. We have cows!"
Wow nice! My uncle was the guy who got all the live real footage of actual tornadoes in this movie. He was also a technical advisor with the crew and even appeared on Oprah to help promote the movie. Martin Lisius is his name. He's well respected in the weather community and as a result of his work here, Chevrolet even had him do a commercial for a truck at one point.
I live just south of Omaha, off and on for over an 8 year period. I had a tornado warning whistle about 50 yards from my apartment. It would go off the first Saturday of every month at 10am. I was a HEAVY drinker at the time and it drove me NUTS at the time. We never had a tornado while I was there, just a few watches. About a week before I left permanently I was staying with a friend at the local AFB, I was already out of my apt. We had tornado warnings every night for a week. We had a tornado touch down the last night I was there. It made me thankful for the tornado warning sirens.
In 2007 an EF5 scrubbed the entire town of Greensburg, Kansas off of the southern plains. There is extensive photographic evidence of the damage and the rebuild of the entire town. Google it. An EF4 passed about 600 feet north of my house in KCK as it was tracking from western Kansas City Kansas on its way to Liberty, Mo. in May 2003. We were fortunate enough to be on the outflow side so everything that was picked up by the storm and north of the storm got spit out on us. We lost part of a roof three walls of siding, most of our west and north windows and 10 assorted fruit trees. Two people died in it. Good reaction. Glad you enjoyed this one.
What I didn't know, was that Bill Paxton got this role thanks to Apollo 13 - Tom Hanks was initially considered to the role, but after working with Bill in Apollo 13, he suggested to cast Bill - and it was great cast. Twister also inspired entire generation of storm chasers and brought people attention to the community of weather research, and after Bill Paxton passed away, storm chasers gathered in Tornado Alley and formed his initials with their GPS signals on map, with Wakita in middle. It's sort of tradition for when the storm chasers pass away (like they did it for Twistex team as well), and Paxton was the only non-storm chaser who earned it as his role in Twister brought lot of people interest in the field, one of most known chasers who was inspired by Twister, is Reed Timmer. Also, Dorothy device is inspired by real life device NSSL tried to launch in 80s, but unsuccessfully - T.O.T.O. (as Dorothy's dog in Wizard of Oz, hence the device name in movie was Dorothy). In nowadays, Dorothy, D.O.T.3 (Jonas' device) and T.O.T.O. are displayed in National Weather Service center in Norman, Oklahoma.
This is my best friend's favorite movie. For her birthday 2 years ago, i took her to see this at a popular drive in across town. What an experience!! The surround sound in the car made it feel like we were in the movie! Added bonus- a thunderstorm came through half way into the movie until it was over. I cant describe how fun that was! If you ever get the chance to see this at a drive in, take it! You'll love it, V! Also, i recommend What Women Want. It stars Helen Hunt and Mel Gibson. Until next time!
Thanks for a fun review. Having lived a lot of my life in "tornado alley" I enjoyed (as much as possible) this movie. I've never personally seen a twister (but heard one going overhead in the dark). I DID see the aftermath of one of the most infamous one's of the 2000's....the 2011 Joplin MO F5. Finger of God indeed. I went to Joplin the weekend after it struck to volunteer with cleanup. I've never EVER seen destruction like that...and hopefully never will again. The area where the tornado passed through town was almost a mile wide...and there was nothing above 3 feet high. Finger Of God. Peace [This was also the BEST advertisement ever for Dodge Trucks...hugs the ground while tractors and semi's fly through the air]
3:00 you should see Helen Hunt in Quaterback Princess (1983) 5:15 after the probe named.TOTO invented in 1979 in real life. 16:10 the "core" here is a reference to the area of highest precipitation. I have a lot of this knowledge as I was a meteorology major and wanted to storm chase. Nowadays, I do spotting from home location as I am one of the people responsible for activation of the sirens for my town. So all stationary work for me. Storm chasing is dangerous, not as much as tornadoes being the threat but other storm parts like lightning, hail, flooding, straight line winds, but the biggest threat really is other drivers both chasing ones and ones who are not who may actually get distracted because of the storm.
I used the DVD for this movie to set up my very first surround sound system back in the day. It was perfect for it! Cool movie and ya gotta love Helen Hunt. Another excellent Helen Hunt movie is "As Good As It Gets" There's some other dude in it too, Jack Nicholson, or something like that. ;)
Awesome reaction... Spent some of my youth in tornado alley. The sound of the National Weather Service breaking into TV and radio broadcasts every tornado season will always haunt me lol... (Also the town sirens going off... And the feel of the atmospheric pressure change... The calm and the rain and the hail when they're near...) And yes, there's tornado insurance. :) Mooo! Great reaction to a fun but slightly emotional film.
I live in Iowa. The college I graduated from is Iowa State University. Our team mascots is the Cyclones Cyclone is a term which used to be used interchangeably with Tornados. We had tornados south of me today. THey were predicting the possibility as far back as last night. The final house scene is actually in the same town as a college roommate of mine. We roomed together shortly after the release of this movie. Yes, tornados are covered by insurance, as long as you have good insurance. Other people get some help recovering from federal agencies such as FEMA. Similar to if you live in a Hurricane area.
I read a lot of journals that were wrote by soldiers during the American Civil War, and 1 person had a similar experience as the F5 barn scene at the end of the movie. His name was Sam Watkins and he fought for the Confederacy and served in the 2nd Tennessee Infantry. 2 years into the war he wrote about a night in camp, it was storming and raining and lightning flashes was the only time he could see anything. He saw a bunch of his men come running out of the trees shouting to everyone run. Sam and a young soldier Billy ran and took shelter in a near by barn. He describes everything was pitch black, things slamming into the walls and sounded like a runaway locomotive. It lasted only a few minutes and after it passed he looked up and saw the roof was gone. He rolled over and saw Billy had his head and chest crushed in with bricks. He saw his arm was broken and his body was otherwise mutilated. He went on to say Billy was about 16 with curly blonde hair, and that he looked like a girl.
My favorite part of the movie is the monstrous sounds they give the tornadoes. That shit is so real…I always say after surviving a high end EF 3 that the sounds arent exactly a train noise. It has that as well but its more like 50 trains and a it 100% has that growl to it like its alive. Most terrifying sound Ive ever experienced and Im so glad they included it.
Oh! I'm not really a rom-com person, but As Good as It Gets (1997) is a good one. It stars Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson. The drive-in movie made me think of it. 😄
While I've never been in a tornado, I live on the edge of Tornado Alley, so I've been close to a few. The sky really does take on a sickly, greenish hue when you're near a twister. It was only very recently I learned that the guy who played "Preacher" (a.k.a. the guy who almost got his scalp taken off by a flying hubcap during the drive-in movie tornado) also played Cadet Copeland (a.k.a. one of the jerk cadets) in _Police Academy._ His name's Scott Thomson. I know the sequel features all new characters, but I hope a few of the members of Bill's and Jo's chase team show up in the upcoming movie.
That was an amazing reaction! Thank you so much for watching this icon! Believe it or not, they actually interviewed 2 people who actually were in the middle of the tornado and survived. So everything Bill and Jo saw were exactly as the survivors described it. Helen Hunt has also been in these films: Quarterback Princess, based on true story about a girl being a kicker on all boys football team, and Soul Surfer, which based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton’s shark attack and overcoming her obstacles to get back in the water. If you want more natural disaster films I recommend Dante’s Peak and Volcano. 👩🏼👨🏻🌪
I love this movie it's 28 years old and still looks incredible lol Fun fact this was the first movie to be put onto DVD lol The little girl in the beginning is Alexa Vega This is essentially the best 2 hour commercial for Ram Trucks, I heard that truck had a v10 in it too I love that thing lol 10:17 great line lol 12:55 "Wheres my truck?" "Oh, there it is" lol 16:00 the movie The Core i worth a watch if you like disaster type movies 16:12 there was an idea to make that cow a zebra instead to tie it into Jumanji which came out a year before this but they decided against it lol You can see the path the tornado took during the credits
I've watched this movie several times, and I never noticed the Star Wars reference ("That's no moon. It's a space station.") until now. I'm glad you mentioned the movie, or I would probably still be wondering where the quote was from.
Great reaction as always. I watched this in the theater as well as the Twister- Ride It Out, ride/experience at Universal in Orlando . That's as close as I ever want to be near a tornado. 😅
More Helen Hunt? Watch "As Good As It Gets" More Paxton? Watch "Frailty" and/or "True Lies" (Not a main role in either, but both characters are memorable)

Michael Crichton and his then wife wrote the script for this movie not based on a novel, but based on an ILM proof of concept shot, basically proving that they could do convincing CG tornadoes. This was also the first movie released commercially on DVD. In reality, there as a weather package that the idea of Dorothy is based on, the real one was called Toto, Dorothy’s dog. It did not work as well as shown here, it was mostly deployed in the 1980s.
Real-life meteorologist Paul Douglas, who has a cameo on the movie, came and spoke at an assembly at my school after the movie came out. I don't remember much, but he did mention working on the movie.
Good Bad Flicks just had a video on the production of the film that is worth checking out. Great reaction and yeah, doggo is safe! People that have houses damaged or destroyed should have insurance and FEMA to help with things but that's just to replace the physical things. The emotional toll can be devastating.
Being hit by debris isn't the only way they could have died at the end. It's rare that it happens but, if you're caught in a tornado, the updraft can pull the air right out of your lungs, causing you to suffocate. If you're interested in how accurate this is, there was a great Discovery channel reality series a few years back called Storm Chasers about, well, a group of professional storm chasers. There was also a film maker with a specially designed vehicle, designed to enable him to get footage from within a tornado.
Yes, natural disasters are covered by insurance except flood or earthquake. Those have to be covered by specific insurance. Most insurance does not cover hotel stays. And you have to argue with the value of your home and property with the insurance adjusters.
If you want to check out another Helen Hunt performance, she’s great in As Good As It Gets. Very fun movie with Jack Nicholson. I didn’t know that about Tom Hanks!
In regards to the game twister I played it a few years back and discovered i was pretty darn flexible, however I'm probably not as flexible now. 🤣 This made me laugh way too much
As Good as It Gets is a good Helen Hunt movie.
There is a ton of footage for the 2011 Joplin tornado if you would like to see what an EF 5 tornado is capable of - lots of footage of the tornado, survival stories and before and after footage.
Imp the greatest tornado footage of all time is the guy from Fairdale, Illinois recording on his phone from the attic. Absolutely TERRIFYING.
@@VerowakReactsyou’re welcome for the info! 😊 anytime!
Yes, like a hurricane, or a flood, or a fire, or a mud slide, or even an earthquake, people rebuild.
That cow scene was a must see (or better said must HEAR) back then for all homecinema owners.
Came here to talk about the cartoon on your thumbnail 🤣👏
Hahahaha I couldn't resist! 🤣

Her dad held door for no reason as everyone below was just fine even when door was gone
I didn't understand why he felt like he had to hold the door. Like you said, everyone else was fine. He would've been too, if he'd just stayed put.
@@ronfehr7899 He didn't know that at the time. The tornado could have easily sucked everyone out as it passed over.
@@asterix7842Good point. He probably just got sucked up because he was still holding onto the door.
Thank Spielberg for that. He told Jan De Bont (the director) to kill the dad in order to explain Joe's obsession with getting Dorothy flying.
Alan Ruck was also Connor in the tv show Succession.
FuN fAcT an actor played more than one role 🙄 christ will you people ever SHUT UP
Thanks, Verowak!
And I liked her in Rollercoaster (1977). She was only 13 during shooting and I think she's done films even before that.
I live in Kansas Wichita Kansas we all Kansas Oklahoma surrounding states we had to dodge these things this summer it was fairly active several tornadoes this year
That sounds absolutely terrifying!
@@VerowakReactsyou get used to it. Like earthquakes in Alaska and snow in Canada.
"We got cows" 🐄
To answer your question: yes, if you live in an area where tornadoes occur, you can purchase tornado insurance, and you can also purchase hurricane insurance if you live in an area where they are prevalent.
Flood and earthquake ins too!
But
You forgot the parts about A it is an additional opt in policy, B annual premiums are prohibitively high (say 15k/yr for earthquake insurance in CA), C the layout is "supplemental" to your entire primary coverage being exhausted, D there is another deductible you pay first after that, and E it is mostly a laughably small maximum sum.
That 15k premium CA coverage 10 years ago had a 5k deductible AND paid out 15k lol.
So if you have 15k a year to PAY THEM you may as well just put that much a year into a saving account- since actually needing it may never come or only every decade.
So many unnecessary comments to the simple question that I already answered.
If you're looking for another storm centered film I'd recommend 'The Perfect Storm'. Based off a book that was written about a massive storm in the early nineties. Great film
Chest Rockwell and Brock Landers on the high seas. Great movie.
Hey beautiful Ewok. Loved Bill Paxton as a actor. Rip. Sending love and positivity
Did you see the movie Frailty? He was SO good in it
@@toukiethat's a fantastic movie!
I saw this in the cinema with two big blowers in front of the big screen and a brand-new Dolby surround sound system. It was quite the spectacle at the time. 😃
We never really got tornados in Pennsylvania until the past couple years. Thankfully none near my house but we have gotten the warnings.
Another disaster movie I enjoy on this same subject starring Bruce Campbell is *Tornado.*
"I've got to go. We have cows!"
As an old military weatherman I can attest, this was as important to us as METOC nerds as "Full Metal Jacket" was to us as Marines.

"It's the suck zone"
"Shape her like a cow." 🤣
Jo, "I think I know how to make them fly" Verowak, "shape em like a cow..... Cows can fly!" 😂.... HA, that's udderly ridiculous! 😂
Surely you're not gonna milk _this_ one for all that it's worth.
3:00 you should see Helen Hunt in Quaterback Princess (1983)
5:15 after the probe named.TOTO invented in 1979 in real life.
Another excellent Helen Hunt movie is "As Good As It Gets" There's some other dude in it too, Jack Nicholson, or something like that. ;)
Ahh, Jack Nicholson, not a very well known actor 🤣 /s
Awesome reaction... Spent some of my youth in tornado alley. The sound of the National Weather Service breaking into TV and radio broadcasts every tornado season will always haunt me lol... (Also the town sirens going off... And the feel of the atmospheric pressure change... The calm and the rain and the hail when they're near...) And yes, there's tornado insurance. :) Mooo! Great reaction to a fun but slightly emotional film.
Good luck with modern GPS instructions when you're taking a shortcut through a field of corn, lol.
Recalculating!
That would make this movie a comedy 🤣
Yes, there is a movie titled The Core. You should watch it sometime.

16:00 the movie The Core i worth a watch if you like disaster type movies
16:12 there was an idea to make that cow a zebra instead to tie it into Jumanji which came out a year before this but they decided against it lol
You can see the path the tornado took during the credits
Helen Hunt lead role in 'As Good As It Gets' with Jack Nicholson was really good.
I've watched this movie several times, and I never noticed the Star Wars reference ("That's no moon. It's a space station.") until now.
I'm glad you mentioned the movie, or I would probably still be wondering where the quote was from.
Fun one, Verowak! 🙂

Great reaction as always. I watched this in the theater as well as the Twister- Ride It Out, ride/experience at Universal in Orlando . That's as close as I ever want to be near a tornado. 😅
More Helen Hunt? Watch "As Good As It Gets"
More Paxton? Watch "Frailty" and/or "True Lies" (Not a main role in either, but both characters are memorable)

My first experience with Philip Seymour Hoffman. So different from other roles I've seen him in.
Born and raised in Oklahoma. I live outside and literally remembered this movie when the Claremore, Oklahoma tornado ran me over. I'm never throwing away this belt. It was an EF-3

That's really neat that he went and spoke at your school! I've never had anything like that, so I think it's great when I hear about it
I used to love this movie as a kid. Such a great script and it's so fun seeing Cary Elwes as a bad guy. BTW had no idea Michael Crichton wrote it!
Couple cool facts. This was the first movie for that bodystyle Dodge Ram and they did most of the weather effects practical on set
Most tiny doorlock ever :-) Love this film

Yes, natural disasters are covered by insurance except flood or earthquake. Those have to be covered by specific insurance.
Most insurance does not cover hotel stays. And you have to argue with the value of your home and property with the insurance adjusters.
