Mythbusters dedicated a whole episode to testing certain scenes in the movie. The sharp turn at high speed was accomplished by having the estimated weight in water barrels standing in for the passengers. The barrels were placed and secured on the right side, the same side where the passengers were during the turn. The turn was possible. The bus, operated via remote control, did not tip.
27:58 Fun Fact: The bus jump WAS actually performed...TWICE because the first jump looked "too perfect"... The way they did it was by having a little ramp to launch the bus, the jump was only about TEN feet instead of 50, and there was NO GAP in the road. The gap was painted in during post-production.
The Rock is all around great! There are over the top things about Nick Cage and about Michael Bay, but The Rock has the right amount of them applied in just the right way. And Sean Connery is wonderful as usual.
You win the internet for the "Annie are you OK?" bit. Perfect comedic timing. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have trouble with brain off movies in general but this one is just so well done.
Fun Fact This is Director Jan De Bont's Debut Film He would also Directed Twister in 1996 (which I know you already watched and really liked) Also He was PA on the set of Point Break that is where he met Keanu I would highly recommend Point Break as another 90' action movie Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze Surfing and Bank Robbery that's all I'll say
Remember, the 90's movies that are suggested are the ones that have stood the test of time. There were stinkers, but they have disappeared from collective memory. On a different note, movies can have just so many "Oh, c'mon!" moments before devolving into silliness. The older Bond films are a master class in riding that line or falling off the edge. Jumping the bus was acceptable here, at least IMHO 😊. Great reaction. Fun movie. I'm thinking you can be excited to watch the others from the list. 👍 Oh, and there were two answers to your pop quiz - this and the Lake House (2006). Years later it was revealed through separate interviews that Reeves and Bullock both had crushes on each other after working together, but didn't realize the other felt the same.
I think the jump is the one thing that really pushes the line. The speed the bus maintained through tight turns and ramming into things is what I put in the acceptable category. But even watching the jump scene the way they did it, it has such an unrealistic upward launch that I only tolerate it because the rest is so good lol. But I always cringe so hard that they kept the jump in when I see it.
Sandra is also quite good in the 2000 movie, "Miss Congeniality". Almost as much action and lots of laughs. Reves is very good in an overlooked 2006(?) movie "Hardball". Good reaction.
The guy (Bob) in the elevator, had a (small?) role in Twister, but he's been in so many TV-series that, if you haven't seen him in one, I'd be surprised.
@@pavelvecera8489 I'm a fellow who remembers the 90s and also knows that pit hasn't gotten better In the years between. If that's your bag good luck otherwise let the buyer beware
I was going to say Lake House to your trivia question at the beginning of the video....while techinally true, I accept it as wrong because the quiz master has final say and you said Speed
Verowak is becoming one of my favorite reactors, because of how expressive her face gets as she's watching, and her eyebrows goes up and down a lot, lol. But I never imagined she was an engineer before TH-cam, so she's a smart lady too. Keep up the good work Verowak, and I can't wait to see you dig deeper into Stallone's career. My recommendation would be 'Cop Land', a movie I think is a bit underrated.
I hope you watch the Keanu+Sandra sequel, The Lake House. This time, she's travelling TWO YEARS ahead of him and he needs to catch up to her, because, love. Pop quiz hot shot, what do you do? WHAT do you do? 😂😂😂
FUN FACT: Michael Kamen was initially going to score the movie, however De Bont wanted Mark Mancina to do it after hearing his compositions in some Hans Zimmer’s scores
Pop quiz Verowak: a person tells you there's a movie with a bomb on a bus...once the bus goes over 50mph the bomb is armed...if it drops below 50 it blows up...what movie do you watch? 🤣
You'd love The Net with Sandra Bullock and also Virtuosity with Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington that NO ONE talks about but is the perfect movie that you are looking for!
My first experience with Keanu Reaves was in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, which I suggest you watch if you're ever in the mood for a goofy movie (perhaps watch it's sequels too).
I love this movie, its hard to believe its 30 years old lol Dennis Hopper is incredible in this 14:02 the glass breaking wasn't planned it just happened and they left it in lol 20:58 that gets everybody lol 21:45 they actually tested that on Mythbusters and it did work lol 27:38 they actually made a bus that did jump so it's as practical as possible lol 37:45 one of the biggest explosions ever lol 39:00 youre not too far off what they actually do lol
It's hard to believe Keanu Reeves went from Bill and Ted to the Matrix and John Wick...this movie was jumping the bridge (pun well intended) for his career. Now that's an Excellent Adventure for sure!
13:20-13:40 Since my job involves a lot of driving, I can tell you that if you need to exit within the next 2 miles off a highway, it can be an 80mph speed limit, you're not going to get above 43 at certain times of the day. Everyone else id flying by you, but you won't have time to pass safely and return to exit.
38:30 Movie Flaw: The bomber would know that the bus blew up at this point because even though the news choppers couldn't fly into the airport to film it, they DEFINITELY would have been able to see that HUGE explosion and all the black smoke, and they would have reported it.
This movie had a 60 (most have a 100, basically 1 page per minute) page screenplay. You can tell because the movie ends at 60 minutes and then they tag on the train. Which is just a repeat of the previous 20 minutes. The bus will crash because there's no road so speed up to jump the road... There's no train tracks so speed up and jump the tracks... If it's your first time then you can stop watching when the bus explodes...
So, Dennis Hopper, who played the bomber, was kind of a wacky but legendary character, on and off screen. This is a little more obscure, and probably isn't one of the top movies of his that you'd normally be suggested, but a personal favorite of mine that was my first real introduction to him when I was younger, but you should check out "Flashback"(1990), a sort of odd couple comedy/action with Kiefer Sutherland! Maybe not an iconic movie for most, but I guarantee you that it's still a good time!
2:21 - "Jump before you hit the bottom!" I assume you're referring to the myth that if you're trapped in a falling elevator, jumping just as it hits the ground will save you from serious injury or even death. Sorry to say, that's one of those myths that is definitely not true. If you fell just one or two floors, you would probably be ok -- maybe just some bruises or a broken bone or two -- but much more than that and it will not end well for you.
I love the 90's action movies. My favorite childhood. I really love your reaction to this movie though. You're so cute and funny. You should watch Speed 2: Cruise Control.
30:56 I never understood why the truck towing Jack wasn't driving closer to the bus...it's foolish to be pulling that creeper (the thing Jack's laying on) with THAT MUCH cable...the longer it is, the less stable it would be.
I got stuck in an elevator last year late one Friday after work hours. It took over 90 minutes for them to get me out of there. And I can assure you, even though I was alone, it does get hot very fast in there with no air circulation.
You know when the bad guy knows your every move you've been hit by a smooth criminal. :P Dennis Hopper was firing on all cylinders in this. Also so quotable. (The bus jump always bothered me too even as a kid lol) You'll have to check out the Bill and Ted movies... and The Lake House. [edit] Just wanted to add... fun and entertaining reaction.
Having been there many times, the speed limit on the hiways around LA may be higher than 40 but a lot of the time you'd be lucky to get anywhere near that because of the traffic
Well with you saying you're a Civil Engineer I'd absolutely recommend the 1996 disaster action flick DAYLIGHT staring Sylvester Stallone about a tunnel collapse.
This is such a "good" (read entertaining and re-watchable) movie that to this day I cannot believe no one in the process of making this film said "we're cutting this 'bus jumps the gap scene, right? RIGHT?!?!" "Eh, I can pass on. I don't know if they exist." Might I introduce you to one Mr. Steven Seagal? (Actually, "Under Siege" wasn't bad.)

During the 70's 55 MPH became the national standard max speed limit, at the time of this movie most states were just beginning to rise those limits and in busy towns most dropped 10 even on the highways. WV now is 70 on the highways and was 65 when this came out and KY is still 55. The oil embargo was the reason for that limit and later safety was an excuse to let it linger for a couple of decades. WV still in fact list 55 in law as the speed limit unless otherwise marked. I am not an expert on the process for all states but I used my own WV as the example. Some were faster or slower to change and in CA the environmental crazies likely held back the raises in speed because you burn more gas per mile as speed increases in a geometric curve up. 5 MPH more is often about the same cost per mile as low vs. high test gas. (High test is often cheaper per mile than low test) I do call them crazies because if you study most their plans beyond the surface they normally prove worse than the status quo. For an example there the Model T got 48 miles to the gallon and fails the parts per million on emissions standards but when adjusted for volume pollutes less than any production gas vehicle made today, most polluting more than twice the total pollution per mile. Likewise the EV's don't have emissions themselves but you consider the coal and gas burned to charge them and the energy loss between with transformers, charging the added weight 2-3X the equivalent and plus they are an environmental toxic waste site at end of life. With a solar top to help charge and extend range an EV or hybrid might start making since but until then they are even useless in many areas like my own WV in hills. With an engineering background I am surprised you were not informed on the old limits and the why's. My training was history from an engineering school with a dad that is an electrical engineer.
Die Hard on a bus. "Die Hard on/in a..." sums up a lot of 90s action movies. It got so absurd that people cynically quipped that Die Hard was just Die Hard in a building.
John McThiernan was initially going to be the director, but after realizing that it was another Die Hard clone, he quit and recommended De Bont, who worked with McThiernan as a cinematographer in Die Hard and The Hunt for Red October
Don't disrespect Dennis Hopper V. Countless movies most notably, Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, True Romance etc.,etc. Luv ya V. Great shoulders and hair.❤ Keep up the great postings.
27:55. "I'm just saying, no interchanges I've ever built would be able to do that. That's just not how they're designed." Um? Real ones, or simulators? edit: answered at 50:00.
There are plenty of bad action movies from the 90s, Vero. I promise you. You're patreon probably wouldn't ask you or suggest you to watch them, but they are there.
Jumping to survive a falling elevator is a myth. The elevator would be falling downwards so fast the tiny upwards thrust from jumping wouldn't make any practical difference eg falling down at 20 mps - jumping up at 0.5 = still dead, And that's assuming you could tell exactly when to jump.. 😂 . Best chance is to lay flat on the floor, That would spread the impact forces over the greatest area, Ie spread the load.. Still a miniscule chance though..
"There's no way the speed limit is 40." Well, no, but there's this little thing called rush hour where traffic is lucky if it's able to travel the speed limit.

The 80s had a lot of great action movies as well!
That decade practically invented the "Summer Blockbuster".
The bomber is two-time Oscar nominee, Dennis Hopper.
I think he gave the performance because being unhinged was part of his actual personality to begin with..he just dialed it up.
Loved Hopper in Hoosiers. It was a perfect supporting role and kind of made that movie just that much better.
Mythbusters dedicated a whole episode to testing certain scenes in the movie. Nice try. California was in fact one of the first states to raise speed limits to 65 once legally permitted to do so in 1987. West Virginia was not.
I know Speed 2 wasn't liked by many, but for me I liked it.
Instead of itching powder, how about pepper spray - just fills a thousand cubic feet with un-breathable air as soon as the bag zipper opens.
Speed is in no way Die Hard on a bus. Anyone who says that is an idiot.
@@ClaudioTV2005Not a Die Hard clone.

Bad 90's action movies ? No way ! No bad action movie has ever popped out of the Hollywood factory. Ever.
🤣
Saw on original release abd umpteen times since...DON'T BOTHER WITH SEQUEL 🎩
The people are soooo slow out of the elevator. Always bugged me :-)
Yeah, that’s definitely a run-and-dive situation. Minimize your time in the guillotine zone.
pop quiz.... what movie stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock.... "The Lakehouse"?
I was not expecting them to have started in another movie together hahaha
0:00 I was thinking of "The Lakehouse". Much prefer "Il Mare", though.
50 kph equals 31.069 miles per hour, So it would be easier to trigger the arming of the bomb..
Yes it would
She's a Wildcat huh? That explains the driving. We got a lot of bad drivers here in Tucson. Like, a LOT a lot.
"There's no way the speed limit is 40." Well, no, but there's this little thing called rush hour where traffic is lucky if it's able to travel the speed limit.
It didn't seem like there was much traffic :)
"[Jack's] luck is never gonna run out, is it." Well, since he completely dodged being in the dumpster-fire sequel, no.
Actually, jumping doesnt help..you are still falling at high speed..just a delay of maybe 1 second. Lol
