I live in Oklahoma and depends what category it is. It goes from EF0 to EF5 85 to 250 miles per hour maybe sometimes a little more. And twisters and tornadoes are the same thing and they come a lot quicker than hurricanes. Hurricanes you have a few days to prepare yourself before it hits you it last a lot longer. Tornadoes can show up the last minute, but they’re fast and done.
As I watch this reaction... out-of-season tornadoes are making their way across Oklahoma for the 3rd day in a row. Apparently some small ones passed through my neighborhood while I was sleeping this morning.
It's a unique feeling to watch the weatherman put a flag up on the weather map right on top of your apartment complex, and hear him say, "you have 13 minutes to get below ground. Nothing above ground will survive". It's another unique feeling to return to your apartment at 2am, with half the city dark... and your apt didn't even lose power.
As a life-long Midwesterner, I love watching reactions from people who don't live in tornado country. While it's not 100% accurate, it's definitely pretty damn close. Tornados are absolutely terrifying, and all the worse for the fact that they don't give much warning and often come in the middle of the night.
As a fellow storm chaser, we always tell people the deadliest part of storm chasing are other storm chasers. Many chasers have died from crashing into each other. A lot of time as well if you're trying to escape a tornado there could be a lot of chaser traffic slowing you down.
I could see that. I'm not a storm chaser, but was an "adrenaline junkie" of a different kind. Volunteer flagging/communications/safety responder for sportscar racing in the US (think F1 or Le Mans 24hrs instead of NASCAR - we have officials on every turn, instead of just the start/finish line). Your comment made me wonder if we have something else in common - are there people out there that might not be suited for it? I still recall a couple of times when I was a Corner Captain, assessing my crew, and handing out assignments. "(worker 1) on Yellow Flag, (worker 2) on Blue Flag, (workers 3 & 4) on Safety, and (worker 5), go back to the concession stand and bring us all some coffee." Every time I see that scene at the drive-in where Jo has to practically drag the dude out of the truck to go into the oil change pit in the garage, it reminds me of 'worker 5'. Funny thing..whenever I miss the 'ol gang', I don't watch racing stuff. I watch "Twister". I can hang the name of a real person on every personality type in the film. I'm "Rabbit" (maintain your equipment, trust your training, trust your people). And Dr. Melissa Reeves is every woman I've taken to the racetrack that I didn't meet there. 🤣 I'm glad the screenwriter didn't make her a villain, though. Some people just aren't cut out for it.
I love how at the beginning Jen was like "I love weather disaster movies, I don't care how farfetched they are or when people say 'Oh that wouldn't really happen' I don't care, I love it!" and then later when Helen and Bill anchor themselves to the pipe Jen is like "What do the experts say about this?" Lmao, also Holden and that damn Apple Sauce reminds me of Harry Winkler making his own Apple Sauce from the movie Here Comes The Boom. Great reaction and you two are as funny as always!
Clicked this one so fast! This is my guilty pleasure movie. I was about 6 when this came out. We rented it on VHS from Blockbuster. I was obsessed with it after the first watch, and watched it 4 more times that same day. Watched it 3 more times the next day before we had to return it. It's been my once a year summer watch since then.
The scene when they're strapped to the pipe reminds me of the comedian. Ron White when he talks about the guy that says he was going to strap himself to something during a hurricane. He said it's not that the wind is blowing. It's what the wind is blowing.
I was in two tornadoes as a kid back in the seventies. The first was in the Missouri Ozark mountains in my uncle's house. The house was built into the side of a mountain, and we huddled in the basement as the tornado lifted and passed over us without causing any damage. The second time we were driving down the hi-way in Louisiana when it began to rain extremely hard. The hail and the wind were blowing our van all over the place as we pulled over to wait it out. You couldn't see anything. Then as fast as it started, the sky cleared, and we started driving again. A couple of miles down the road we drove through a small town that had been ripped apart. Trees down and roofs removed from their houses. Fun times.
Twister is just another name for tornado. The difference between tornados is there size and wind speed that they measure called enhanced fajita scale (EF) and they go 0-5. EF5 being the biggest. My hometown here in Oklahoma has been hit by an EF5 3 times. The most recent one in 2013 I was about 2 miles from it. But the one in 1999, 3 years after this movie, hit my house and lucky we were saved by the storm shelter. I’ll never forget that day and the monster coming towards us. This movie’s tornados I think are more accurate looking than the new movie. Important tip that I learned that day, if the tornado looks like it is not moving that means it’s heading right for you.

To Jen's earlier ponderings.....yes, storm chasers sometimes DO lose their lives. The 2013 El Reno tornado claimed 3 storm chaser's lives. Somehow, NO storm chasers were lost during the 2011 Joplin tornado. It was a miracle, really. There are some REALLY great documentaries about these 2 storms. A fascinating watch. Drive-in's are awesome and need to be brought back. I've spent COUNTLESS summer nights at the local drive-in.
The El Reno Tornado is the only Tornado that caused Storm Chasers fatalities. The 2013 El Reno Tornado caused four chaser fatalities, and also killed 4 others. The El Reno was a MASSIVE and erratic tornado that expanded to nearly 2 miles wide (largest tornado ever recorded), spawned numerous orbiting tornadoes (rotating around the main), just crazy rotational speeds as well (155 mph sustained with peaks of over 300 mph). Twister would just be a regional name for a Tornado.

@@cliveklg7739 Like every person that covered it (which were storm chasers) I watched said it was 2.5 miles though. And they also said while the condensation funnel was what the chasers thought was the tornado (which would've been the 2 mile or so you were talking about), the actual tornado was far larger (2.5 miles) at it's widest.
The soundtrack was awesome also. Wherever I've watched a natural disaster movie I hear the Van Halen song Humans Being. Song is synonymous with Twister. RIP EVH
They actually tried something similar to Dorothy in the 70s and 80s called TOTO (Totable Tornado Observatory), but never worked. The 3 sensor deploy units from this movie can be seen on display at The National Weather Center in Norman, OK. The guy on TV at the first that really isn't in your reaction is Gary England, he was a meteorologist in Oklahoma, my home state for 41+ years before he retired. F5 tornadoes are really rare. The Fujita scale started in 1971 and only 67 total have ever been recorded. Also, unless it is your very last option, don't take shelter under overpasses because the windspeeds can actually increase due to the Venturi effect. Yeah, high-end F4 and F5 tornadoes can pull bolts out of concrete, they would have been ripped in half at the end, if not impaled.
A couple of things about this movie: They call the Tornado in the opening sequence an F5, however the Fujita scale was not in use in 1969. Also i believe this movie was being played at a drive-in in OK when it was released and a tornado hit while the movie was playing.

when I was a kid, I lived in eastern Aurora Colorado, and we had a tornado touch down not too far east from your house. We had to huddle in the basement.
The new one is good.. but the original one is far superior in everyway literally!! Music. Characters. Action. Special effects. Memorable . Just brilliant!!!!
I like the new one too, but I agree this one is superior. The plot was a bit insane in the new one. The "antagonist's" entire business structure made no sense. It's like it was shoehorned in by an 11 year old writer because they wanted a bad guy. And much like everything else these days, the CGI was terrible. Clouds, grass, and dandelion fuzz all exist in real life and are very easy to film practically. It shouldn't feel a cartoon when you're watching them. All in all though, still a good sequel.

For me this is absolutely my favorite comfort movie. I think I know just about every line by heart. Such a fun time with great characters. Dusty is the best!
I live in Oklahoma. We had a pretty big outbreak this year, a few big ones hit north and about 10 min east of us this year. If you live in an area that has a lot of tornadoes you aren't nearly as scared of them as a person that has never been around. Most of the time the sirens go off and we look at the weather and look outside first (it sounds dumb because it is) Only been through one that hit my town, we moved after. The movie nails the fact that a tornado will take one house and skip the next, its heartbreaking. The biggest thing I remember because we were in a shelter was when looking at the damage a toothpick was sticking into a stop sign, so you could see both ends, still sharp going in one side and out the other. Crazy to think that tiny piece of wood went through metal without breaking. The community really comes together for those impacted to help get each other back on their feet.
PS: Oh yeah! To answer your question! Over the past weekend, we did get some damage! The saddle shed, for example, is a total loss. 😢 I made a "Facebook" album dedicated to the damage. The insurance inspection will hopefully happen ASAP so that we can begin recovery.
I saw Twister on the VHS when I was really young, it was so terrifying and it messed me up as a child, which gave me nightmares. To this day, it’s still a great movie and I still watch it with the family 🔥💯
I read a lot of journals that were wrote by soldiers during the American Civil War, and 1 person had a similar experience as the F5 barn scene at the end of the movie. His name was Sam Watkins and he fought for the Confederacy and served in the 2nd Tennessee Infantry. 2 years into the war he wrote about a night in camp, it was storming and raining and lightning flashes was the only time he could see anything. He saw a bunch of his men come running out of the trees shouting to everyone run. Sam and a young soldier Billy Wagner ran and took shelter in a near by barn. He describes everything was pitch black, things slamming into the walls and sounded like a runaway locomotive. It lasted only a few minutes and after it passed he looked up and saw the roof was gone. He rolled over and saw Billy had his head and chest crushed in with bricks. He saw his arm was broken and his body was otherwise mutilated. He went on to say Billy was about 16 with curly blonde hair, and that he looked like a girl. The book is Sam Watkins: Company Aytch "
One of my favorite movies. This came out in my first year in the Navy; I was 25. If you are looking for a couple more amazing disaster movies, 1972's The Poseidon Adventure and 1974's The Towering Inferno are two of the best. The Towering Inferno is my all-time favorite disaster movie and has my favorite actor, Steve McQueen, as a battalion chief in the San Francisco Fire Department. Speaking of drive-in theaters, one of my favorite memories is of being at a drive-in during the summer of 1982. I was 11 years old and the movie was E.T. Seeing E.T. for the first time under the stars was a truly magical experience.
I remember watching Twister AT a drive-in. The scene where the tornado took out the theater screen, you really couldnt tell where your screen was and the movies’ screen was, it was kinda nerve racking and thrilling at the same time.
One of the real life storm chasing teams from Discovery's Storm Chasers was killed in the 2013 El Reno, OK tornado. Very few chasers are killed by a tornado, but other road hazards. The CGI cow was originally a giraffe from Jumanji. 😂
I always enjoy Twister and reactions to it. Helen Hunt was great in it. It's a 2 hour Dodge Ram Truck commercial, playing not long after the new model had come out. Sales did pick up after the movie. I was working at a gas station during a likely EF1 tornado in Ohio, myself and 2 customers waited it out in a back room, after lightning had taken out the pumps and debris hitting the large glass windows. It cut a path between the station and our home and caused tree and fence damage but mostly went through fields and woods areas.
This is one of my absolute favorite movies. I live in Kansas, have all my life and I have never once seen a tornado. I've seen videos from people who have never once stepped foot into Kansas and they make it out as if tornadoes are just constantly sweeping across the stat all day every day.
We had a round of tornados through lower west Michigan a few years ago. I was in the basement dealing with some flooding when the power went out. Pretty much oblivious, I finished up what I could and called it a night. The next morning I got a call asking if I was okay after the tornado... So I went outside and saw that the roof had been torn off the carport across the parking lot and a building a block over had been demolished. And that's as close as I ever want to get.
I was in 1st or 2nd grade when this movie came out, but I still remember how HUGE of a deal it was that they were filming a movie in Oklahoma (happens much more often now, but then it was extremely rare that a big budget movie got filmed in our state). The meteorologist on the TV in the very beginning in a really young Gary England if I remember right. He's a legend in the OKC area. The meteorologist interviewing Jonas is Jim Giles, another well known meteorologist from the 90's. I love how they added authenticity to the movie by having some of the characters wear apparel from University of Oklahoma and Muskogee State University. Those are arguably the two best colleges to study meteorology in the country. So it makes perfect sense for the characters.
Yes, drive-in movies are very prevalent across the Midwest. I live on a farm in South Dakota, and there are 2 near me, one 45 miles & one 32 miles away. They are a great way to see movies. I was going to tech school when this came out, saw it twice (it helped I lived a half a block from the movie theater). I also worked part time at the Dodge dealership in that town, and this movie brought in a ton of business for the redesigned Ram pickup.
Jamie Gertz is one of the best "doomed" love interests in film. They didn't make her dumb or mean. They just showed an adult relationship that didn't work out. Presumably she was written into the film primarily to be the everyman so they could throw a lot of exposition towards the audience in a natural way.
I have been in a tornado just once. Loving in Northern PA at the time one touched down across the street behind our neighbors house and ran parallel from the road. My mom and I ran to our storm cellar. She wouldn't let me go out after it was gone. Because she was thinking about that opening scene in Twister 😂😂😂. But it was only a small f-1, so it didn't do any real damage.
Comment of the day was incorrect. He wasn't the only one killed by a terminator, alien, and a predator. Lance Hendrickson was also, even though Lance was a robot named Bishop in Aliens, it still counts.
This movie came out the summer before I left home for college. There was a tornado that went through a drive in theater in the town I was going to college at. It was mentioned on Entertainment Tonight at the time - it was said the tornado came through the screen while showing the movie. Wasn't there at the time, so I can't say if its true; some people online swear it was, others say it happened when no one was at the theater.
such a classic movie. i saw this movie when it first came out in 1996. ever since then its my 2nd favorite movie next to fast and fuirous. but anywho. my mom would rent this movie every single day when i was a kid. and now i know the movie almost word per word. can never get tired of watching it.

High end f4 May 2003. To this day, while there are a few things that are off in this film, it still gives me enough chills and reminders of that night. Neighbor of mine had a similar situation as the well scene at the end. He wasn't strapped down, but he was holding on to something and the twister emptied his pockets out and pulled his blue jeans (with belt) off completely.
First time I've seen anyone not recognize Cary Elwes from The Princess Bride. In that scene at the end, it wasn't just flying debris that could've killed them. It's possible to suffocate in a tornado when negative air pressure sucks the air out of your lungs. There was a Discovery channel reality show a few years ago called Storm Chasers, following a group of professional storm chasers. There was also an IMAX film director who built a specially designed vehicle to get footage from inside a tornado. For another great disaster movie, you should check out Volcano (1997), with Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche.
I live in Moorhead, Mn. right across the river from Fargo, ND. On June 20th 1957an F5 hit Fargo. It was a very slow tornado so many people had a chance to get out of the way, it was also very well documented at the time. Dr. Fujita came to Fargo to study the damage and go over the 200 pictures and video of it. That was the start of his research to later develop the F scale. I was born in 72. A couple years after seeing Twister I did some amateur storm chasing in my area and the best I got was some rotation which was cool, but I wanted a picture of a tornado. : )
The first-time storm chasers were killed directly by a tornado was during the El Reno Tornado in 2013. Two storm chasers part of TWISTEX were killed when their car was hit by the subvortex. A independent storm chaser was killed in the same storm.
Released on mother's day weekend 1996 and it was phenomenonal. The next film for director Jan De Bont after SPEED (1994). Loved the story and characters with so much going on (tragedy, excitement, fear) in every moment. The action pieces that involve facing the storms are so good. The award-winning special effects are too good to look this real. But the intensity of recording and documenting such things is fascinating. Because of this movie, stormchasing was in much higher demand than usual. Everybody was into how twisters worked and wanted to be part of that world. This was the No.2 film of 1996 and the first-ever film on DVD. The soundtrack was dope with contributions by Van Halen (Humans Being) and Respect The Wind by Mark Mancina feat. Eddie & Alex Van Halen. I've been on the Twister ride at Universal Studios Florida simply called TWISTER:Ride It Out. RIP to Bill Paxton (Bill) and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Dusty). You can't compare to the recent TWISTERS (2024) because it was more fun and over the top. The original is just more real and that's ok.

As a polyamourus person, in my version instead of divorce papers, he would be seeking consent to have a second wife! 😮 ❤❤ Helen Hunt is the alien "Princess Aurora" in the original "The Bionic Woman" that was on "NBC" while the parent series "The Six Million Dollar Man" was on "ABC"! Jamie Gertz is the rich girl in "Square Pegs" that was on "CBS"! She roller skates in "Solar Babies"! But she plays the Earthling Human wife and mother in a "CBS" sitcom about a family that moves into a cul-de-sac neighborhood secretly inhabited by alien life forms disguised as Humans! 😅😂 It has meta comedy! 😅😂 "The Neighbors" should not be conflated with "The Neighborhood" that's on "CBS". Hmm. "The Neighbors" may have been on "FOX"? 🤔 It has been years! 😮 How many cast members in this movie have since died? 😢 Helen Hunt's family has a big ranch in Oklahoma. She spent a lot of time there during the making of this movie. Driving from Ada to Tulsa takes you right by the big gate! 😊 This movie means a lot more to Pauls Valley & Garvin County residents than the sequel does, because they made scenes here! Maysville still has that diner that was made for the movie, though it is no longer a functioning diner as it was when left as a gift to the town. The locals already had their establishments that they preferred. The location is kept as a part of the "Twister" tours location sites for tourists to see. 😊 Our older city lake is the one shown during the closing credits. Alas, the ground based scenes didn't make the final cut. 😢 I got to spend hours talking to the security guard at the lake set, who stopped me to ask me where he could have fun locally. He was realky asking about bars though, and since I'm a teetotaler I talked about actual places to have fun, not become intoxicated! 😊 Dawn broke up conversation during which my car had been idling the whole time! He had to go shoo away the families who sneak in to fish without a license! 😮 A lot them seemed to only speak Spanish, though. 😮 Some of Dad's city hall/government co-workers still got credited or at least thanked during the end credits! 😊 One guy though, was disappointed because his scene was cut! 😮 My best friend works as a campus custodian or janitor for "OU" in the building that teaches Meteorology and also houses an active weather center. It has "The Flying Cow Cafe" and the "Twister Museum"! The scene of the truck driving through a house was made in a location in Norman! It may be a part of the tour there. I've never been there, but he takes it for granted! 😊 "Twisters"! The girl gets to use the rodeo line literally rather than figuratively and so I appreciate it the most! 😊 Bye-bye for now! Namaste! 🙏
Holden, I’m with you.the opening of the film traumatized me and actually prevented me from watching the movie as a whole for a very long time. But on the bright side, I got to see Bill Paxton just own the screen alongside Helen Hunt and Cary Elwes. I would recommend Mighty Joe Young for the channel, it’s one of my favorite Bill Paxton films
About 15 years ago a tornado came through my hometown. I was luckily where I was on the other side of town but unfortunately a friend of mine lost her grandparents in it. Tornado and Hurricanes are definitely the most terrifying weather events to go though,Also fun fact twister was the very first movie released on dvd.
Grew up by the auto-rama drive in in north ridgeville Ohio. 2 different movies shown on 2 different screens. Sometimes they showed some really great movies so we'd spend the weekend going back and forth. Now people bring their kids in their pajamas and blankets in case they'd fall asleep. Would make their night a little easier 😊
I Loved drive in theaters. Back in 1978 I met my wife while we were stationed in Millington and we started dating. The first movie I took her to was at a drive-in just North of Millington, it was Star Wars during its first run. What a ride those dates led to, 45 years later we are still together.
Lance Henriksen also holds that honor of being killed by a Terminator, an Alien, and a Predator. Also, the girl that played young Jo is Alex Vega from Spy Kids.
Been through two tornadoes, two near hits. Hit my neighborhood twice. Once in belleview kentucky in 1988 and another in Crittenden kentucky in 2007, there is youtube footage of the one that hit crittenden going across i75.
Fun fact the actor that plays jo helen hunts character as a little girl is alexa vega She was in spy kids 1 2 3 And made an appearance in number 4 I used to have a crush on her When I was younger I still do I'm a big fan of hers Also I know phillips seymour hoffman's nephew in real life We're friends With that being said rest in peace bill paxton and philip seymour hoffman Twister will always have a special place in my heart I still haven't on dvd and blu ray I still have yet to get twisters on bluray I got to experience the sequel in theatres Not as good as the original but it's still very good
Had a tornado hop over our house (what the insurance folks said - if it had stayed above any longer it would have torn the roof off. Sucked windows in, wind speed piled hail up agianst the sliding glass door and melted it pushing the water under the door and into the house. Siding on the house now was patterned from hail hitting it and denting it. Mom and I were home and went to the basement. Brother and dad were at a near by gym playing basketball. Took them a couple hours to get home with fallen trees, etc.

They tried to get stock footage for the movie by staying in Oklahoma throughout the storm season. And back in those days it was extremely hard to chase tornados with a success rate of about 10% . Along with that that season was very quiet for tornadoes in Oklahoma so there didn't get anything stock footage.
I love this movie it's 28 years old and still looks incredible lol That little girl in the beginning is Alexa Vega This movie is basically a 2 hour commercial for Ram Trucks and I love it lol 8:51 yes they filmed outside but usually during clear/normal sky's and just made the sky look bad with cgi 9:35 great line "can I drive?" "No" "then would you?" Lol 10:37 "where's my truck?" "There it is" lol 11:35 this was shot as practicality as possible but all the tornado shots are cgi. But the wind/rain/hail and debris is all real 11:55 there was an idea to make that cow a zebra instead to tie it into Jumanji which came out a year before this but they decided against it lol 18:00 the tornado going through the movie screen is easily one of the best shots in the movie lol 20:19 you might've missed it but their fingers are all bandaged up from cutting those cans lol 20:55 that's a full size semi truck built out of aluminum so it could be picked up by a crane and they did the explosion twice lol 22:00 they actually went through a house set lol 22:50 those are actually fence posts going into the barn which actually happens I've seen pictures of one that went through a concrete curb it's insane The only tornado experience I've had was when I was living in Billings Montana and we had an outbreak of them. 4 touched down officially that day in June 2010. One went through a small airport and one F2 damaged the local arena in town. There's actually a video on yt of it hitting the arena.
If you didn’t know, Twister was co-produced by Warner Bros and Universal along with Amblin. Warner Bros owns domestic prints while Universal owns international prints. Also the reason why the drive in shows a different movie in that scene. Domestic prints show The Shining while international prints show Psycho. Also Twisters is co-produced by those companies as well but it’s the opposite way instead. Which is Universal owning domestic prints and Warner Bros owning international prints. Another fun fact: Twister was actually the first movie to ever be released on DVD back in March of 1997
I’ve been thru several tornadoes in my life, by far the worst I’ve experienced was March 24, 2023 in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. They say it sounds like a freight train, believe me, it’s so much worse.

I remember at the time this was advertised as Jurassic Park, but with Tornadoes (the fact it was produced by Steven Spielberg and Michael Crichton had a writing credit helped), and at times it truly feels like it. I don't know how to explain it, bu it does.
I have had a run-in with a tornado. This year (2024) back in the first part of May, A tornado knocked a tree into the apartment I was in at the time and punched a hole in the kitchen ceiling... at 3am in the morning.

On Easter Sunday of ‘81, I was 7 years old and living in NE Oklahoma with my family, and came face to face with a huge toranado. Over 40 years ago, I can still smell the incoming rain and hear the tornado sirens blaring. My dad had just dug a hole, laid the concrete down, and placed our storm shelter in the ground that weekend. The concrete still hadn’t set yet, when the rain started. We all climbed into it. So, when the winds started going and the rain had raised the storm shelter up a foot or so off the ground, it felt like we were on a ship going through a hurricane bucking and getting jerked all around. I’m not sure how long it actually lasted, but it felt like an eternity, especially to a 7 year old. It terrified me, but thankfully after all was said and done, we were all ok and the house only suffered minimal damage. Ever since, I’ve had a deep respect for Mother Nature’s power! Also, this movie soundtrack rocks!
An old girlfriend of mine was in one. It threw her van in a deep ditch, landing on its side. The tornado went directly over top of her. Being in the ditch saved her. Btw they say the eye of a tornado is calm and quiet. She said that is false. It was super loud and you could see all the debris it picked up, flying around inside. It was very frightening for her.

I live in Oklahoma and depends what category it is. It goes from EF0 to EF5 85 to 250 miles per hour maybe sometimes a little more. And twisters and tornadoes are the same thing and they come a lot quicker than hurricanes. Hurricanes you have a few days to prepare yourself before it hits you it last a lot longer. Tornadoes can show up the last minute, but they’re fast and done.
As I watch this reaction... out-of-season tornadoes are making their way across Oklahoma for the 3rd day in a row. Apparently some small ones passed through my neighborhood while I was sleeping this morning.
It's a unique feeling to watch the weatherman put a flag up on the weather map right on top of your apartment complex, and hear him say, "you have 13 minutes to get below ground. Nothing above ground will survive".
It's another unique feeling to return to your apartment at 2am, with half the city dark... and your apt didn't even lose power.

As a life-long Midwesterner, I love watching reactions from people who don't live in tornado country. While it's not 100% accurate, it's definitely pretty damn close. Tornados are absolutely terrifying, and all the worse for the fact that they don't give much warning and often come in the middle of the night.
yeah, this weekend has been wild for that. Storm chasers near downtown OKC were seeing small twisters spin up and dissipate in minutes, at times.

As a fellow storm chaser, we always tell people the deadliest part of storm chasing are other storm chasers. Many chasers have died from crashing into each other. A lot of time as well if you're trying to escape a tornado there could be a lot of chaser traffic slowing you down.
I could see that. I'm not a storm chaser, but was an "adrenaline junkie" of a different kind. Volunteer flagging/communications/safety responder for sportscar racing in the US (think F1 or Le Mans 24hrs instead of NASCAR - we have officials on every turn, instead of just the start/finish line). Your comment made me wonder if we have something else in common - are there people out there that might not be suited for it? I still recall a couple of times when I was a Corner Captain, assessing my crew, and handing out assignments. "(worker 1) on Yellow Flag, (worker 2) on Blue Flag, (workers 3 & 4) on Safety, and (worker 5), go back to the concession stand and bring us all some coffee." Every time I see that scene at the drive-in where Jo has to practically drag the dude out of the truck to go into the oil change pit in the garage, it reminds me of 'worker 5'.
Funny thing..whenever I miss the 'ol gang', I don't watch racing stuff. I watch "Twister". I can hang the name of a real person on every personality type in the film. I'm "Rabbit" (maintain your equipment, trust your training, trust your people). And Dr. Melissa Reeves is every woman I've taken to the racetrack that I didn't meet there. 🤣 I'm glad the screenwriter didn't make her a villain, though. Some people just aren't cut out for it.
"Twister" is just a colloquial name for a Tornado. Tornado = Official. Twister = Non-Official.
I love how at the beginning Jen was like "I love weather disaster movies, I don't care how farfetched they are or when people say 'Oh that wouldn't really happen' I don't care, I love it!" and then later when Helen and Bill anchor themselves to the pipe Jen is like "What do the experts say about this?" Clicked this one so fast! This is my guilty pleasure movie. I was about 6 when this came out. We rented it on VHS from Blockbuster. I was obsessed with it after the first watch, and watched it 4 more times that same day. Watched it 3 more times the next day before we had to return it. It's been my once a year summer watch since then.
Yes, this is my favorite movie. I have been so surprised to learn how many people also really love this movie.
The scene when they're strapped to the pipe reminds me of the comedian. Ron White when he talks about the guy that says he was going to strap himself to something during a hurricane. He said it's not that the wind is blowing. It's what the wind is blowing.
I was in two tornadoes as a kid back in the seventies. The first was in the Missouri Ozark mountains in my uncle's house. The house was built into the side of a mountain, and we huddled in the basement as the tornado lifted and passed over us without causing any damage. The second time we were driving down the hi-way in Louisiana when it began to rain extremely hard. The hail and the wind were blowing our van all over the place as we pulled over to wait it out. You couldn't see anything. Then as fast as it started, the sky cleared, and we started driving again. A couple of miles down the road we drove through a small town that had been ripped apart. Trees down and roofs removed from their houses. Fun times.
Saw 'Twister' in theaters during my Sr. Year of HS. I'm struggling to realize that it was 28 years ago. 🤦♂️
Twister is just another name for tornado. The difference between tornados is there size and wind speed that they measure called enhanced fajita scale (EF) and they go 0-5. EF5 being the biggest. My hometown here in Oklahoma has been hit by an EF5 3 times. The most recent one in 2013 I was about 2 miles from it. But the one in 1999, 3 years after this movie, hit my house and lucky we were saved by the storm shelter. I’ll never forget that day and the monster coming towards us. This movie’s tornados I think are more accurate looking than the new movie. Important tip that I learned that day, if the tornado looks like it is not moving that means it’s heading right for you.
In Ohio - we had a record year for these this year. So far everyone I know (all over the state) are ok - thank God.

The 2013 El Reno tornado claimed 3 storm chaser's lives.
Somehow, NO storm chasers were lost during the 2011 Joplin tornado. It was a miracle, really.
There are some REALLY great documentaries about these 2 storms. A fascinating watch.

The El Reno Tornado is the only Tornado that caused Storm Chasers fatalities. The 2013 El Reno Tornado caused four chaser fatalities, and also killed 4 others. The El Reno was a MASSIVE and erratic tornado that expanded to nearly 2 miles wide (largest tornado ever recorded), spawned numerous orbiting tornadoes (rotating around the main), just crazy rotational speeds as well (155 mph sustained with peaks of over 300 mph).
Twister would just be a regional name for a Tornado.

And they also said while the condensation funnel was what the chasers thought was the tornado (which would've been the 2 mile or so you were talking about), the actual tornado was far larger (2.5 miles) at it's widest.

This is my favorite movie of all time and am so happy to see you watching this! Twister is practically slang for tornado.
They actually tried something similar to Dorothy in the 70s and 80s called TOTO (Totable Tornado Observatory), but never worked. The 3 sensor deploy units from this movie can be seen on display at The National Weather Center in Norman, OK. The guy on TV at the first that really isn't in your reaction is Gary England, he was a meteorologist in Oklahoma, my home state for 41+ years before he retired. F5 tornadoes are really rare. The Fujita scale started in 1971 and only 67 total have ever been recorded. Also, unless it is your very last option, don't take shelter under overpasses because the windspeeds can actually increase due to the Venturi effect. Yeah, high-end F4 and F5 tornadoes can pull bolts out of concrete, they would have been ripped in half at the end, if not impaled.
A couple of things about this movie: They call the Tornado in the opening sequence an F5, however the Fujita scale was not in use in 1969. Also i believe this movie was being played at a drive-in in OK when it was released and a tornado hit while the movie was playing.
Fujita retroactively rated tornadoes back to 1916. Another took the retro-active work all the way back to 1880.

when I was a kid, I lived in eastern Aurora Colorado, and we had a tornado touch down not too far east from your house. We had to huddle in the basement.
The new one is good.. but the original one is far superior in everyway literally!! Music. Characters. Action. Special effects. Memorable . Just brilliant!!!!

I like the new one too, but I agree this one is superior. The plot was a bit insane in the new one. The "antagonist's" entire business structure made no sense. It's like it was shoehorned in by an 11 year old writer because they wanted a bad guy. And much like everything else these days, the CGI was terrible. Clouds, grass, and dandelion fuzz all exist in real life and are very easy to film practically. It shouldn't feel a cartoon when you're watching them. All in all though, still a good sequel.

Universal studios Orlando use to have a twister experience it was built on the scene at the drive in theater. Scary as hell.

I live in Oklahoma. We had a pretty big outbreak this year, a few big ones hit north and about 10 min east of us this year. If you live in an area that has a lot of tornadoes you aren't nearly as scared of them as a person that has never been around. Most of the time the sirens go off and we look at the weather and look outside first (it sounds dumb because it is)
Only been through one that hit my town, we moved after. The movie nails the fact that a tornado will take one house and skip the next, its heartbreaking. The biggest thing I remember because we were in a shelter was when looking at the damage a toothpick was sticking into a stop sign, so you could see both ends, still sharp going in one side and out the other. Crazy to think that tiny piece of wood went through metal without breaking.
The community really comes together for those impacted to help get each other back on their feet.
PS: Oh yeah! To answer your question! Over the past weekend, we did get some damage! The saddle shed, for example, is a total loss. 😢 I made a "Facebook" album dedicated to the damage. The insurance inspection will hopefully happen ASAP so that we can begin recovery.

I saw Twister on the VHS when I was really young, it was so terrifying and it messed me up as a child, which gave me nightmares. To this day, it’s still a great movie and I still watch it with the family 🔥💯
I read a lot of journals that were wrote by soldiers during the American Civil War, and 1 person had a similar experience as the F5 barn scene at the end of the movie.
His name was Sam Watkins and he fought for the Confederacy and served in the 2nd Tennessee Infantry. 2 years into the war he wrote about a night in camp, it was storming and raining and lightning flashes was the only time he could see anything. He saw a bunch of his men come running out of the trees shouting to everyone run. Sam and a young soldier Billy Wagner ran and took shelter in a near by barn. He describes everything was pitch black, things slamming into the walls and sounded like a runaway locomotive. It lasted only a few minutes and after it passed he looked up and saw the roof was gone. He rolled over and saw Billy had his head and chest crushed in with bricks. He saw his arm was broken and his body was otherwise mutilated. He went on to say Billy was about 16 with curly blonde hair, and that he looked like a girl. The book is Sam Watkins: Company Aytch "
The town Wakita after the tornado hit, was a real town that got hit by a tornado and the film crew got approval to shoot that scene!

One of my favorite movies. This came out in my first year in the Navy; I was 25. If you are looking for a couple more amazing disaster movies, 1972's The Poseidon Adventure and 1974's The Towering Inferno are two of the best. The Towering Inferno is my all-time favorite disaster movie and has my favorite actor, Steve McQueen, as a battalion chief in the San Francisco Fire Department. Speaking of drive-in theaters, one of my favorite memories is of being at a drive-in during the summer of 1982. I was 11 years old and the movie was E.T. Seeing E.T. for the first time under the stars was a truly magical experience.
I remember watching Twister AT a drive-in. The scene where the tornado took out the theater screen, you really couldnt tell where your screen was and the movies’ screen was, it was kinda nerve racking and thrilling at the same time.
One of the real life storm chasing teams from Discovery's Storm Chasers was killed in the 2013 El Reno, OK tornado.
Very few chasers are killed by a tornado, but other road hazards.

I always enjoy Twister and reactions to it. Helen Hunt was great in it. It's a 2 hour Dodge Ram Truck commercial, playing not long after the new model had come out. Sales did pick up after the movie. I was working at a gas station during a likely EF1 tornado in Ohio, myself and 2 customers waited it out in a back room, after lightning had taken out the pumps and debris hitting the large glass windows. It cut a path between the station and our home and caused tree and fence damage but mostly went through fields and woods areas.
This is one of my absolute favorite movies. I live in Kansas, have all my life and I have never once seen a tornado. I've seen videos from people who have never once stepped foot into Kansas and they make it out as if tornadoes are just constantly sweeping across the stat all day every day.
We had a round of tornados through lower west Michigan a few years ago. I was in the basement dealing with some flooding when the power went out. Pretty much oblivious, I finished up what I could and called it a night. The next morning I got a call asking if I was okay after the tornado... So I went outside and saw that the roof had been torn off the carport across the parking lot and a building a block over had been demolished.
And that's as close as I ever want to get.

I was in 1st or 2nd grade when this movie came out, but I still remember how HUGE of a deal it was that they were filming a movie in Oklahoma (happens much more often now, but then it was extremely rare that a big budget movie got filmed in our state).
The meteorologist on the TV in the very beginning in a really young Gary England if I remember right. He's a legend in the OKC area. The meteorologist interviewing Jonas is Jim Giles, another well known meteorologist from the 90's.
I love how they added authenticity to the movie by having some of the characters wear apparel from University of Oklahoma and Muskogee State University. Those are arguably the two best colleges to study meteorology in the country. So it makes perfect sense for the characters.
Grew up with this classic way back in 96'. Fast forward 20 years later and we have a sequel

Yes, drive-in movies are very prevalent across the Midwest. I live on a farm in South Dakota, and there are 2 near me, one 45 miles & one 32 miles away. They are a great way to see movies.
I was going to tech school when this came out, saw it twice (it helped I lived a half a block from the movie theater). I also worked part time at the Dodge dealership in that town, and this movie brought in a ton of business for the redesigned Ram pickup.
Went straight to the comments when Holden said, "It's the guy from Saw." Cary Elwes is the guy from Princess Bride, always.
Jamie Gertz is one of the best "doomed" love interests in film. They didn't make her dumb or mean. They just showed an adult relationship that didn't work out. Presumably she was written into the film primarily to be the everyman so they could throw a lot of exposition towards the audience in a natural way.
I have been in a tornado just once. Loving in Northern PA at the time one touched down across the street behind our neighbors house and ran parallel from the road. My mom and I ran to our storm cellar. She wouldn't let me go out after it was gone. Because she was thinking about that opening scene in Twister 😂😂😂. But it was only a small f-1, so it didn't do any real damage.

This movie came out the summer before I left home for college. There was a tornado that went through a drive in theater in the town I was going to college at. It was mentioned on Entertainment Tonight at the time - it was said the tornado came through the screen while showing the movie. Wasn't there at the time, so I can't say if its true; some people online swear it was, others say it happened when no one was at the theater.

High end f4 May 2003. To this day, while there are a few things that are off in this film, it still gives me enough chills and reminders of that night. Neighbor of mine had a similar situation as the well scene at the end. He wasn't strapped down, but he was holding on to something and the twister emptied his pockets out and pulled his blue jeans (with belt) off completely.
First time I've seen anyone not recognize Cary Elwes from The Princess Bride. In that scene at the end, it wasn't just flying debris that could've killed them. It's possible to suffocate in a tornado when negative air pressure sucks the air out of your lungs.
There was a Discovery channel reality show a few years ago called Storm Chasers, following a group of professional storm chasers. There was also an IMAX film director who built a specially designed vehicle to get footage from inside a tornado.
For another great disaster movie, you should check out Volcano (1997), with Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche.
There is a Drive-in Theater nearby where I live that I've been to a number of times. It mostly operates in the summer and early fall.
I live in Moorhead, Mn. right across the river from Fargo, ND. On June 20th 1957an F5 hit Fargo. It was a very slow tornado so many people had a chance to get out of the way, it was also very well documented at the time. Dr. Fujita came to Fargo to study the damage and go over the 200 pictures and video of it. That was the start of his research to later develop the F scale. I was born in 72. A couple years after seeing Twister I did some amateur storm chasing in my area and the best I got was some rotation which was cool, but I wanted a picture of a tornado. : )

The first-time storm chasers were killed directly by a tornado was during the El Reno Tornado in 2013. Two storm chasers part of TWISTEX were killed when their car was hit by the subvortex. A independent storm chaser was killed in the same storm.

My wife convinced me to see Twisters at the drive-in earlier this year. All I could think about was the drive-in scene from this movie the whole time.
Released on mother's day weekend 1996 and it was phenomenonal.
The next film for director Jan De Bont after SPEED (1994).
Loved the story and characters with so much going on (tragedy, excitement, fear) in every moment.
The action pieces that involve facing the storms are so good.
The award-winning special effects are too good to look this real.
But the intensity of recording and documenting such things is fascinating.
Because of this movie, stormchasing was in much higher demand than usual.
Everybody was into how twisters worked and wanted to be part of that world.
This was the No.2 film of 1996 and the first-ever film on DVD.
The soundtrack was dope with contributions by Van Halen (Humans Being) and Respect The Wind by Mark Mancina feat. Eddie & Alex Van Halen.

Maysville still has that diner that was made for the movie, though it is no longer a functioning diner as it was when left as a gift to the town. The locals already had their establishments that they preferred. The location is kept as a part of the "Twister" tours location sites for tourists to see. 😊
Our older city lake is the one shown during the closing credits. Alas, the ground based scenes didn't make the final cut. 😢
I got to spend hours talking to the security guard at the lake set, who stopped me to ask me where he could have fun locally. He was realky asking about bars though, and since I'm a teetotaler I talked about actual places to have fun, not become intoxicated! 😊
Dawn broke up conversation during which my car had been idling the whole time! He had to go shoo away the families who sneak in to fish without a license! 😮

My best friend works as a campus custodian or janitor for "OU" in the building that teaches Meteorology and also houses an active weather center. It has "The Flying Cow Cafe" and the "Twister Museum"! The scene of the truck driving through a house was made in a location in Norman! It may be a part of the tour there. I've never been there, but he takes it for granted! 😊

Holden, I’m with you.the opening of the film traumatized me and actually prevented me from watching the movie as a whole for a very long time. But on the bright side, I got to see Bill Paxton just own the screen alongside Helen Hunt and Cary Elwes. I would recommend Mighty Joe Young for the channel, it’s one of my favorite Bill Paxton films

About 15 years ago a tornado came through my hometown. I was luckily where I was on the other side of town but unfortunately a friend of mine lost her grandparents in it. Tornado and Hurricanes are definitely the most terrifying weather events to go though,Also fun fact twister was the very first movie released on dvd.

Grew up by the auto-rama drive in in north ridgeville Ohio. 2 different movies shown on 2 different screens. Sometimes they showed some really great movies so we'd spend the weekend going back and forth. Now people bring their kids in their pajamas and blankets in case they'd fall asleep. Would make their night a little easier 😊
I Loved drive in theaters. Back in 1978 I met my wife while we were stationed in Millington and we started dating. The first movie I took her to was at a drive-in just North of Millington, it was Star Wars during its first run. What a ride those dates led to, 45 years later we are still together.

Been through two tornadoes, two near hits. Hit my neighborhood twice. Once in belleview kentucky in 1988 and another in Crittenden kentucky in 2007, there is youtube footage of the one that hit crittenden going across i75.

Had a tornado hop over our house (what the insurance folks said - if it had stayed above any longer it would have torn the roof off. Sucked windows in, wind speed piled hail up agianst the sliding glass door and melted it pushing the water under the door and into the house. Siding on the house now was patterned from hail hitting it and denting it. Mom and I were home and went to the basement. Brother and dad were at a near by gym playing basketball. Took them a couple hours to get home with fallen trees, etc.

They tried to get stock footage for the movie by staying in Oklahoma throughout the storm season. And back in those days it was extremely hard to chase tornados with a success rate of about 10% . Along with that that season was very quiet for tornadoes in Oklahoma so there didn't get anything stock footage.

The only tornado experience I've had was when I was living in Billings Montana and we had an outbreak of them. 4 touched down officially that day in June 2010. One went through a small airport and one F2 damaged the local arena in town. There's actually a video on yt of it hitting the arena.
If you didn’t know, Twister was co-produced by Warner Bros and Universal along with Amblin. Warner Bros owns domestic prints while Universal owns international prints. Also the reason why the drive in shows a different movie in that scene. Domestic prints show The Shining while international prints show Psycho. Also Twisters is co-produced by those companies as well but it’s the opposite way instead. Which is Universal owning domestic prints and Warner Bros owning international prints. Another fun fact: Twister was actually the first movie to ever be released on DVD back in March of 1997
I’ve been thru several tornadoes in my life, by far the worst I’ve experienced was March 24, 2023 in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. They say it sounds like a freight train, believe me, it’s so much worse.

I remember at the time this was advertised as Jurassic Park, but with Tornadoes (the fact it was produced by Steven Spielberg and Michael Crichton had a writing credit helped), and at times it truly feels like it. I don't know how to explain it, bu it does.
I have had a run-in with a tornado. This year (2024) back in the first part of May, A tornado knocked a tree into the apartment I was in at the time and punched a hole in the kitchen ceiling... at 3am in the morning.

On Easter Sunday of ‘81, I was 7 years old and living in NE Oklahoma with my family, and came face to face with a huge toranado. Over 40 years ago, I can still smell the incoming rain and hear the tornado sirens blaring. My dad had just dug a hole, laid the concrete down, and placed our storm shelter in the ground that weekend. The concrete still hadn’t set yet, when the rain started. We all climbed into it. So, when the winds started going and the rain had raised the storm shelter up a foot or so off the ground, it felt like we were on a ship going through a hurricane bucking and getting jerked all around. I’m not sure how long it actually lasted, but it felt like an eternity, especially to a 7 year old. It terrified me, but thankfully after all was said and done, we were all ok and the house only suffered minimal damage. Ever since, I’ve had a deep respect for Mother Nature’s power! Also, this movie soundtrack rocks!

An old girlfriend of mine was in one. It threw her van in a deep ditch, landing on its side. The tornado went directly over top of her. Being in the ditch saved her. Btw they say the eye of a tornado is calm and quiet. She said that is false. It was super loud and you could see all the debris it picked up, flying around inside. It was very frightening for her.
