This Wood Splitter may NOT BE SUITABLE for all viewers!!
Our main source of heat during the winter is a wood burning stove and Paul's always had a DIY wood splitter to help get the job done. It might scare off a few people with it's design, but it's worked for years for Paul. It needed a little TLC before winter hit, so he re-vamped it to get it in tip top shape again and what do you know........it works like a charm! Check it out!

Laffed my ass off when I realized you had MacGyvered a boat throttle quadrant to run your power train. And it looks like it works really well for the purpose. There is nothing more satisfying than making something useful out of a pile of junk. Have fun and stay safe.

That reminds me of some of the contraptions my husband use to build. People would tell him "that won't work" but when he was done it would work just fine. Good job, that is one my husband would have loved to see. If he were still alive he would probably go down to the shop and start building one just like it, even though he had 2 already. One was store bought and one he built. LOL

In the late 60's I worked for the state parks in Minnesota. They had a homemade wood splitter consisting of an old Steel Tractor Wheel with a splitting wedge welded to it. Driven by a gas motor to rotate the wheel, a platform notched for the wedge was where you place the wood to be split. Your screw setup would have been a great safety improvement.

The efficiency of those splitters is just mind boggling. I think they'd give a processor a run for its money. People who consider that splitter dangerous haven't seen the flywheel splitters that have a splitting head on them. You end up playing chicken with the splitting head for *every* piece of wood...

I don't think I have seen one of those splitters since late 1970s or 1980s, dumber people would not block up the front tires of the pickup and when you hit a knot it would bounce some, especially with iron wood. Very nice design on it especially the holder shelf so you do not need to bend down and pick it up again. You are an artist. Hope you and family stay safe and healthy.

Besides the light near the engine, you might consider adding a light under the control box so it isn't shining into your eyes. Otherwise, it appears to me to be an excellent wood splitter. I'd go so far as to say it's safer than the hydraulic splitters, but then, I've never operated either type. I like your way of thinking through issues for easy resolution.

Also, it doesn't look like the cone has any teeth, just spiral threads, so I don't see how a piece of clothing could get caught on it strongly enough to pull you in. Definitely requires care and attention, but all implements require that:)

Might even throw a couple E-Stops on it somewhere since I have sensors that can shut the engine down. May use a front wheel bearing for a GM 3500 4WD and an electric brake fire a trailer to carry that CV shaft though. Then I can bolt the spike on an eight lug pattern as designed and have an emergency brake available.
Still pondering. Which is why I keep watching this video. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I owned a nor-tech screw splitter that had a motorcycle chain and two different size gears for the power reduction. It was powered by a massive old b&s 7 or 9 horse single cylinder engine.
It worked, but was always a little terrifying.
The only way to kill it was a tab that grounded out the spark plug. Took a few revolutions to actually stop.
It would often grab the round and start flailing it around, bouncing the unit off the ground...
Sold it and bought a hydraulic splitter, I preferred to keep all the fingers and hands I started with.

My dad bought one of these at the Nebraska State Fair in the mid 70s It was so much better than a wedge and sledge hammer!! I remember once dad wanted several pickup boxes of wood split and we couldn't go hunting until it was done. So we figured out how to do it faster. Put the F250 in 4 th gear and put my little brother in the cab. Once I got the screw to start I would yell hit it. My little brother would mash the gas to the floor!! My other brother was rolling logs to me. So we whipped threw a lot of wood in a hurry! We had to kick snow onto the screw tip as it got very hot!! We avoided Y's that day because they would drive the F-250 across the yard.

I've been using a Stickler for around 30 years. The old-fashioned boring way---bolted to the rear wheel of an old Nissan pickup. Not really any more dangerous than using a hydraulic splitter. Understand what you're doing, respect the machine, don't get in a hurry. Just prop the log against the ground to stop rotation. Adjust the throttle setting by putting a dime or nickel beneath the throttle stop screw. Working by myself isn't very time efficient due to the need to remove the split wood and bring unsplit wood to the splitter. A helper is the way to go. Put them in charge of the wood supply and removal, then I sit on a stool feeding in chunks and tossing split pieces to the side for the helper to remove. I'd guess that depending on the wood it's about the same as a hydraulic splitter. Faster if the wood splits easily; the same if it's stringy like elm.

That’s friggin slick! I’ve ram a few home made splitters powered by janky hydraulics and Datsun engines and this is way faster....

Couldn’t you just stick a whole axle In there ? Like a narrow 14bolt or something? One hub flange to motor other hub flange to splitter and maybe a emergency brake for the drive line input or just let it spin free. Then you just put some diff oil in and I bet it last perfectly a long time especially something like a full float 14 bolt ?

Gee - this is beyond funny in a world going 'carbon-neutral', producing ever so much more stuff to keep safety health crowd off your back. The beauty of the recycling will probably lost on them tough.

I did like your videos, until i seen the oil burner, because it saves you from having to bring it to the depot. We all live on planet earth. Yes i know someone, somewhere else is burning it, and your going to tell me it ok. I was introducted to your page from Matt's off Road Recovery. The best parts of his videos are him picking up all the garbage. Respect to the Man.

I likes it. A lot. Seems like it only needs half that much motor. Are you running in low gear? How much does the screw cost? Looks actually safer than a flywheel splitter and I don't see the wood flying up and grabbing stuff connected to your body but I can see if your shirt got caught in the screw you would be screwed.

Thats awesome! Turns the whole idea of splitting wood on its head! Or least on its side! 😜

You need a clutch that instantly disengages that thing, with a huge four foot wide clutch actuator bar running just behind the head so the operator can kill the rotation ......and it not only needs to kill rotation it needs to instantly brake the rotation.
You're going to regret it...first time a idiot gets his shirt, coat, boot lace or whatever caught .......
You comment haters can comment all you want but I been a safety supervisor for decades and that is one dangerous machine.
Any farmer who operates PTO equipment would tell you the same thing.

Just remember that the people talking down your lathe weren't around to see what any lathe of that era looked like when it was new. I worked in a commercial laundry that had washers run by the jackshaft belt and pulley system like that. In the early 70's the flywheel came off the steam engine when it locked up and they converted them to electric like your lathe. I worked for them in the early 90's and they were still running those 1917 washers, commercially.

Love the fabrication but for all that work why not just buy a 35 ton unit from wherever? Safe and you don't have to lift the wood but just slide it on the down plate. Guess not as fast. But 3 days for the build you could have been making a ton of $ on another project. Love the talent.

my grandfather had a setup fab Rats would have liked, it was model-T striped down to motor frame and drive-train, a second rear axle mounted on top of the back frame, and a saw blade about 3 feet across attached to the axle, a belt between the rear and upper axle spun the blade and tilting table was added, we would cut logs all day long with that thing never thought it might be dangerous, of course now people would be afraid just looking at it, and yes you still had to crank it up front and adjust your mix on the column,

I don't see how your wood splitter would be less safe than any other wood splitter. They are all dangerous. I wouldn't recomend wearing a scarf or tie while using yours though. Also incorrect attire for table saws, adjusting the carburetor on a running engine, snorkeling or parachuting.

Those kind of screw splitters were a thing in the 70's and 80's with a strong and slow electric motor but way to dangerous. And before that big beltdriven flywheels with big solid axes on that was even more dangerous..spinning and not being able to stop if something went wrong.
