You can't fake that sort of thing. I've been around vehicles, 4x4's all my life. I've built a few and driven a lot more. I'm 74 years young and still going strong. Thank you for sharing such a enjoyable time, not only doing fab. work but sharing your family as well. Well done!

    1. Excellent Ray Stevens reference.
    2. When I fired up my grandad's old 300 I6 after 18 years of sitting, it would have a decent oil pressure, then lose it all and sound just like that. Ended up having so much sludge in the oil pan that it was starving the oil pump, and wouldn't circulate anything. I dropped the pan, scraped all of the sludge out of the pan (it was a LOT!), threw a new oil pump and pickup tube at it, and it fixed everything.

      When I was a kid I got a mini bike as a trade. I tinkered on it and got it running and my dad helped me fine-tune it.
      Then he drained the oil and filled up the oil reservoir with kerosene. I thought he was making a bomb and stood far off. Then he proceeded to start that thing and not only red line it but he reached in and pushed the governor giving in a few hundred more RPM at least. Flames were shooting out the exhaust pipe and I thought the thing was going to explode! But it didn't and then he drained all the kerosene out which did a pretty good job of cutting a lot of the sludge out. I drove that thing for many years after that...

    I bet there's not a one of the channel's regular viewers that wouldn't have loved to be at that car show. I loved the family Jeep ride and the expressions on the kid's faces as they got airborne over those bumps. Meanwhile, the shop dog sat there like it was just another day in the life of all Fab Rats personnel. Michelle was spot on with her description of what's important for when it comes to ladies and cars. My wife has more than once tried to get in the wrong car because it was the same colour, and on one occasion there was someone sitting in the drivers seat! I could have warned her, but where would the fun have been in that?

    knocking motor is a perfect candidate for a swap with a newer 3800 V6. It will bolt right up, you can get all the parts you need from a 4th gen Camaro with the 3800 V6 as well as a stand-alone harness to let you keep the GM fuel injection and the distributorless ignition. You'll lose your purty plug wires but she'll run fantastic. You'll also gain a factory reliable 40ish HP in the swap compared to the old gen Buick motor. Depending on how the Camaro was equipped, you might even get an automatic transmission you could swap in if you so choose. You'd have to change the tailhousing but it would work.

    • @frigglebiscuit7484

    • @nintendogamer5472
      @nintendogamer5472 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rob A, there is a reason the ls swap is so popular. I grew up on sbc Chevy and jeep I6 and everything about a ls is better. A stock 4.8 ls truck motor makes better power than a 5.7 sbc with vortex heads and other upgrades for less money. The drive ability and mileage is so much better as well. Just for reference I owned 3 k5 blazers with 5.7 and a 83 gmc with a 5.7 and they averaged less than 10mpg with 200 hp tops, I have had 3 Cherokee and a wj grand Cherokee with 4.0 and they average 14-15 city and max 20 hi way with less than 200hp. My 98 ls1 5.7 Cameron with 6 speed has gone Dallas to Havasu 4 times fully loaded cruise set at 78 and averaged 30mpg each trip over 2k miles round trip, and the worst tank ever was 19 mpg the first tank cause I did burnouts at every stop sign and light. It dyno 325 rwhp and has 225k miles now. The ls is so much more superior its not even a contest or debate anymore.

    No seatbelts kids bouncing around in the back. Reminded me of my childhood. My dad taking the family to the beach in Florida. There was a place called the flats in between the duns for regular cars not 4×4's or dune buggies to make it through to the beach with out walking aways you had to bag the back wheels and haul butt.

    I've got a 69 commando that I bought and started wrenching on 30 some odd years ago. Your rear axle looks like a Dana 30, which is what came on most commandos. Blew mine up twice and got tired of fixing it and put in a Dana 44. My old 225 V6 still runs great, but if I blew it up I'd be looking for a 231 even fire from a late '70s Buick. Squeezing in an LS motor is going to be a really damn tight fit. The stock Ross steering box is a piece of junk but I haven't swapped mine out yet. I'm in the middle of a disc brake conversion on the front Dana 27 axle now. Good luck with this one, I'll be watching.

    Paul, watching you has inspired me to relearn my welding skills. (None prior to now) I can do a lot of things, being a basic shade tree mechanic. (Owning a YJ- this is a necessity) but I have shied away from welding. But since watching you, I have taken steps to learn. Thank you for the inspiration!

    1969 Jeep Commando with the bolt-on hard top is what I learned to drive on way back when. Buick engine was reliable, if you don't count the time the fuel pump failed. Floor rusted out, giving us an excuse to learn welding. And for some reason the steering gearbox bolt kept wearing out. Never did figure out why, just had to replace it every few years once things got too loose. Ended up on my brother-in-laws property as a log-hauler for a while, then sat between some trees for decades. He sold it as is recently to someone who is going to restore it, so it will live again!

    As long as it's been sitting with old dirty oil I'm pretty sure it was mostly sledge. At first start it had quite a clatter. I would bet a lot of the parts were not getting lubed. Probably plugged the pick up screen. It just took a while for the new oil to get things flowing again. By then it's pretty chewed up. At the start Paul wanted to go LS. That engine had a expiration period so with a fresh engine even a good used LS it will be a reliable vehicle. Can't wait to see the build and the finished product. I'm sure it will be a mean cherry machine.
    Stay safe healthy and happy 👍

    I haven’t read all the comments but I’ve never heard you mention this, so just so I know you know, you know that that little V-6 is an odd fire engine. I don’t know if they make an HEI aftermarket distributor for an odd fire or not. The nice thing about the Buick oddfire is that they have a great deal more low end torque than the evenfire V6 engine.

    Dad had a 1967 Jeepster Commando. It's what I learned to drive with when I was around 12 years old. Old girl has been gone a long time. Took me 32 years but in 08 I got myself a Wrangler. I've always loved my trucks but nothing plays like a Jeep.
