This has been very useful, trying to decide which espinner to get (perhaps!) thank you!
May I help you with something in return? I heard you say Suffolk. I live in Suffolk, although I’m not a native, and there is a Suffolk accent, but we brits don’t pronounce the L. So just say sUff-uh-k, run it together with the emphasis on the suff part. The end of the word just fades away. Hope that helps! Same applies to Norfolk. No L.
I’ve no idea how the L got there, and we have similar spellings for calm, balm, folk where the L isn’t pronounced.
I’ve heard other people struggle with some of our English breeds, like BF Leicester is said just BF Lester, I’m sure y’all know that one! Corriedale is just Corrydale, just 3 syllables
Hope this is useful to non English spinners. No criticism intended. I wouldn’t know your stuff either 😉

Do you think you could spin horsehair on this unit? I’m currently spinning hair to make horsehair mecates. I’m looking for some kind of spinning machine that will be able to handle the thicker/stiffer material. I currently use a drill with a hook which works beautifully, but it doesn’t draw up the thread as you spin- so spinning inside during our cool Canadian winter means trying to get a 60 foot span indoors. My main concern is how much tension the machine can handle-although I suppose if the thread was drawing back into the bobbin it wouldn’t take as much tension to hold it as does for a long span. Any insight would be great as it’s an expensive unit to buy if it won’t handle the material. Thankyou.

I've never worked with horsehair before. The thinnest I have spun was sport/fingering with wool. I would imagine horsehair is very thin. As for the tension, I usually have the tension as loose as it goes because the take-up is just fine without it. The only time I usually tighten the tension is when the bobbin is super full. Otherwise, I prefer to just start a new bobbin. I'm not sure how long the horsehair is, but if it's less than 2" it will be more difficult, but not impossible.

@@ShearGoodness thanks for your response. I’m spinning the mane and tail hair-so some of it is very thick & “wire-y”. I don’t know all the correct spinning terms, so forgive me, but I feel like the “draw back” requires a lot more tension/pulling and is a lot more finicky than a lot of materials Ive seen online that seem to practically draw themselves. I’ve yet to find anyone who spins horsehair with a traditional type spinning wheel- so either there are not a lot of people spinning it or theres a reason they done use one to do it. Either way I think I’ll try to keep with my current system and I’ll see if I can gain more experience with the materials before I pull the plug on this big of a purchase. Thanks again.

From Gerry Ivkovich= I just received my jumbo spinner. I've been spinning for 16 years on an Ashford traditional, but I am having trouble with the e-spinner. I cannot determine the amount of twist I'm getting and so my fiber is breaking. I guess more practice for that. My foot pedal doesn't seem to work. Did you have any trouble with that in the beginning? As soon as I turn it on the bobbin begins to move and tapping the pedal doesn't seem to stop it. Thanks for the video. Blessings.

      Gerry,
When I turn the button on the front of the unit to "on" it will flash a red light, but the bobbin should not spin until you tap the foot pedal. Make sure the foot pedal is plugged into the "switch" hole under the unit (not the input). Perhaps it is not screwed in tight enough? The "on" button will flash, but the pedal should control the start and stop. I think the machine is perhaps not detecting the foot pedal being plugged in. As for the fiber breaking...my first thought is that the tension is too high. This bobbin is so huge and I rarely need to tighten the tension, except for at the end of my spinning, when the bobbin is near full. When it is full, the take up is poor, but when it is empty, the take up is very strong. I would turn the tension knob counterclockwise, so there is no tension at all on the leather brake band. If that doesn't work, are you spinning a really thin yarn? Let me know how that goes and check back.

I have the same Ashford Jumbo wheel as yours…and unfortunately the Orifice is rusting… I have only had it a year and a half approx… can you suggest what to do?
I can’t believe such an expensive item was not made with a non corrosive part that is so important and could damage the spinning yarn with rust!
Also the Lazy Kate that comes with it is very hard to use as the bobbins are too heavy and do not spin fast enough to ply with!! 😢

My first thought is, are you spinning in the grease i.e. are you spinning raw wool that has not been washed? Is the wool 100% dry before you spin it? Are you using the orifice reducers? I use the large orifice reducer and it is made of plastic, so the yarn never really touches the metal orifice itself. My thought is, if the rust is visible, I might try a very fine steel wool to gently sand off the rust. But you wouldn't be able to paint it afterwards because you can't add any thickness to the orifice.

What lazy kate are you using?

The little bit of plying I did, we just rigged up a home made lazy kate. I mainly like the single spun, super bulky.

You didn’t mention the sound of machine. Noisy? Did you sell your shetland fleece?

I wish I would have thought to include that in the video. It is actually very quiet. I can watch TH-cam while spinning. To the contrary, when I use my drum carder it is very loud and I can't listen to music or anything. I'm hoping to sell the fleeces when I find a good platform/online store. The Shetland fleeces are great.
