    In the past couple of weeks I've been getting lots and lots of questions about e-spinners, so I want to take some time today to talk with you more about some of the e-spinner options out there.
    It's come up more recently because a couple of weeks ago we had talented spinner and writer, Debbie Held, come and teach a workshop for the School of SweetGeorgia called Spinning with E-Spinners. There is so much to know about these electric spinning wheels, so I wanted to take some time to share a little bit more about the two e-spinners I have myself - the Ashford E-Spinner 3 and the Electric Eel Wheel Nano.

    Hi, this is Maurice the inventor of the EEW Nano.
    Thanks for the great video showing off these different e-spinners. I think these kinds of videos where you can talk about the pros and cons of each wheel are great. This is how you get more people interested in spinning and that is my goal. I totally agree there is no perfect e-spinner for everyone and am glad people have lots of options these days.
    I subscribed and looked at your e-spinner guide, which was a great summary. I totally suggest that anyone thinking of getting an e-spinner right now got get that guide.

    Have a number of espinners as well as treadle spinning wheels, I've an ashford jumbo, an eortal, and a nano which I am totally in love with! And once things normalise where we can travel, the nano will be coming too! I find that putting a tiny bit of a smear of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) in the cup where the ball bearing rings sits at either end, then it makes it a lot quieter. Thank you for your video.

    Thanks for this video. Excellent tip towards the end where you mention keeping the devices apart to even put the twist. As a new spinner, my twist can be very inconsistent, but this tip will hopefully change that! Don't have funds for an e-spinner yet, but the tip is useful for my treadle spun fibre.. Thank you so much. 🙏🏻😊

      Hi, I also have a nano and love it! I have an ashford jumbo and an eortal, as well, because I'm greedy! My mum recently got the big sister to the nano the eew 6, and she's very happy with it and its still light enough to travel with, and it runs off a battery as well as from the mains, I can recommend the eew 6 I've been allowed to have a play with my mums, you may find the eew 6 much more affordable and it does chunky yarn as well as thin, its very sturdy and a delight to work with just like the nano is.

    The nano looked as though it was a different experience when spinning but you didn't say anything about how you felt using it. Just now it is out of stock until around October, two months away. I am very interested in it. Thank you for the video.

    I have a Nano 2 which I love but I was getting frustrated by the tiny bobbins. It spins beautifully and is perfect for the fine spinning I like. I've just bought an Ashford e spinner 3 for the much larger bobbins and love that as well. I am disabled so can't always treadle on my treasured Majacraft wheel so these e spinners are wonderful for me. At present I am spinning sock yarn at 60 wpi for chain plying. Both machines cope really well with this. One thing with the Ashford, I love the foot pedal but use it in my hand rather than on the floor. I find it easier. Also, on the floor there is a danger of my dog unintentionally turning it on or off at inopportune moments when she flops down to sleep at my feet! The Nano 2 is easy to turn on or off as the switch is on the lead rather than the machine as it was with previous models. Thanks for your video and discussion. Both of your machines are really noisy whereas both mine are very quiet.

    I have the Ashford espinner and love it. Interested in re-winding freshly spun bobbins. Instead of buying a bobbin winder could I just put a freshly spun bobbin on yarn onto my lazy Kate and spin it back onto an empty bobbin using my espinner. I presume I would be spinning it in the same direction as I originally spun it. Many thanks. Dianne

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting idea! I think you just have to make sure that you are loading the singles onto the empty bobbin without adding any additional twist. If you can roll it on, that would work!

    Thank you I found this very informative as it’s hard to find much information on the e spinners so it sure would be great to see more information about them as they do seem to becoming more popular Is the Ashfords
    e spinner you have in the video the jumbo one? as I have the e spinner 3 but yours looks bigger than mine maybe it’s my imagination. 🥴 as you did say espinner 3 I am having trouble getting the right twist in my yarn with it and also trying to judge how close to work from the orifice and how far away I should sit from it Many thanks for your video 😊

    I have the purple Nano and it really is a good little spinner, BUT I just got its big brother, the EEW 6 and it is fantastic! I just got it last night so I haven't done much but so far it's amat, and the price is perfect for someone who wants an affordable espinner.

    • @lunasmum6869

      I have the Nano 2. I couldn't afford the EEW 6 but I am happy with what I have. I use my little Nano when my disabilities wont allow me to treadle on my lovely Majacraft Rose. I sit it on my lap and spin while watching TV. I have to say my Nano is much, much quieter than the one in the video. Also it has suction feet which I am sure would cut down any vibration on a hard surface.

    I love my Nano wheel, and it's so neat to see one being used in these videos! I do have a question as well though. Seeing (and hearing) you spinning on the Ashford as well, what would you say is the quietest E-spinner (and yes, I've been working my way through the various noise-related Nano hacks)?

    • @bobbinsew
      @bobbinsew 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Elena, I have a Nano and my friend has the latest Ashford e-spinner. We meet regularly to spin together and I’d say that my Nano is quieter than the Ashford. I can spin at night whilst hubby is watching the TV but my friend can’t use her Ashford. I have added feet to my Nano, felt strips in the bearing tracks and a felt washer to stop the bobbin vibrating back and forth on the shaft. Very quick and simple to do, and I bought mine from the original Kickstarter. Maurice recently ran another Kickstarter for the larger EEW6.0 which is a larger and upgraded version of the Nano. It should be available to buy in January. I hope you have fun with your Nano. I love mine!

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. Between the two e-spinners that I have, the Ashford is quieter for me (and I spin in the evenings while we watch tv) but I haven’t done any hacks to improve my Nano setup. I was just using it out of the box. As Beverly mentioned, the new EEW 6.0 might be very quiet too. I used to have the Hansen and unfortunate don’t have one side by side to compare the noise level.

    I am curious if your Nano has the original motor or the newer, more powerful one. I'm finding that my Nano, with the original motor, has barely enough power, particularly as the bobbin fills.

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question!! I’m actually not sure which motor mine came with ... it was relatively new (beginning of 2020?) so probably a new motor. Dreaming Robots sells replacement motors that are more powerful and I’ve heard of a number of people switching out for the newer motor. It can be done!

    I have a nano & the EEW 6 and both are amazingly quiet. I'm wondering why your nano is so loud. I believe some of the noise was the empty plying bobbins rattling on table.
    I hope the sound doesn't turn some people off. I wouldn't want a spinner that makes sounds like in this video.

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! For a traditional 2-ply yarn, you spin your singles to the right (Z-twist) and ply the two singles together to the left (S-twist). Of course, there are variations on this for other purposes, but that's a plain old 2-ply yarn 😊

  • @lesliegould7903
    @lesliegould7903 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would love to be able to ply yarns together...rather than spinning the raw fibre. Any tips or hints? Or does the Nano do the same job as the Ashford E spinner?

    • @alderfae9898
      @alderfae9898 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ply my yarns on my nano all the time and it works really well. It is a smaller wheel, so it is best for spinning/plying finer fibers. I would not recommend spinning anything thicker than a worsted yarn on it. I spin a lot on drop spindles, and I will load them into a makeshift lazy kate (it is just a plastic basket from the Dollar Tree lol) and I ply them on my nano.

    I'm really interested in the nano as a first spinner. It's fairly cheap but I'm unsure if I really want an electric spinner or a traditional wheel. Electrics scare me because when/if they break, they're basically worthless..lol. Theres too many choices!!

      With the Nano the after service is absolutely fabulous. Maurice, who runs Dreaming Robots, the company that makes the Nano, responds within 24 hours if you contact him and I’ve just backed his Kickstarter for a larger version of the Nano (the EEW 6.0) as I’m so happy with his spinner. If you do decide on an E-spinner I would suggest the new larger EEW 6.0 from Maurice which will be released in January after the Kickstarter orders ship. Ashfords e-spinner is lovely but I find their customer service remote and impersonal, if you had an issue I’d say it would take considerably longer to sort than if you buy from Dreaming Robots. The crazy thing about this is that I live in New Zealand where Ashford is based, but would rather buy from Maurice, who is in the US! Hope this helps 😊
