This has always struck me as a sad song, despite the relaxed tropical island vibe. The man's been drinking for days because he had problems with a woman, and he's gradually coming around to realize that it's his own fault. It's a lovely contrast between content and tone.
As an old guy who grew up on this song, when I hear it these days I think about the fact that the younger generations probably don’t know what “stepped on a pop top” means! 🤣 up through the mid eighties (I’m guessing there) soda cans (and beer cans) were opened by pulling & removing a tab. The kind that flip over & stay on the can are a new style! So, it was very common for people to pull off the “pop top” and throw it down. They were everywhere you looked. I think that’s why they changed the design, to cut down on litter. Anyway, these “pop tops” had sharp edges, hence the line “stepped on a pop top, cut my heel, had to cruise on back home” This is one of the biggest, most well known drinking songs of the 70s-80s era. But when you sing along, you have to know where to add the “salt! salt! salt!”
This is exactly right. I’m 51 and had a friend about 7 years younger ask me what a pop top was, so I’d guess the cut off was the mid 80s. I was born in 72 and distinctly remember not being able to go barefoot on beaches and around pools because of discarded pop tops.
This song became such a blockbuster hit in '77, that Jimmy Buffett opened a line of restaurants in the early 80's called Margaritaville. 😁He wrote it when he lived in the Florida Keys...all about chillin' on the beach!!🍹🎶🏖💜
It's about getting drunk -- sometimes blackout drunk -- and staying drunk all winter because you've made a mess of your life and you don't feel up to going back home and facing it.
The song was written about him getting drunk, and being an alcoholic. Blames it on everyone at first, then at the end realizes it is his own damn fault.
Back in the 1970s, Jimmy Buffett spent time around Miami and the Florida Keys, especially Key West. His Margaritaville restaurants are in Key West and Hollywood Beach, Florida, along with other tropical locations.
Opening a brand new one in Downtown Atlanta. I got a sneak peak the other day. I remember one in Atlanta in the 1980’s that was either on Spring St. or West Peachtree in Midtown.
In NC, up the mountain there is a big river and a huge restaurant surrounded by cabins & lit up late called , none else than Margaritiville! You can drink plenty of them! It's really cool ❤
Jimmy Buffet is basically a local hero here in some parts of Florida. I'd recommend checking out his song Beach House On The Moon, it's one of his slower more heartfelt songs. Loving the videos ya'll keep it up.
Jimmy running they square grouper to start his record label. He’s a great guy and a marketing genius. I told him a few years that thanks to him we have to many people and to much traffic in the keys. I went fishing with him a few times about 20 years ago.
Jimmy is such a vibe - his first 10 albums or so were terrific. Early on in his career he still had his ratty apartment in Key West and the ceiling had fallen in on him one day, when a friend walked in and said "uhh Jimmy, you're kinda rich now...you can leave you know..." lol Try "Come Monday, Fins, Changes in Latitudes Changes in Attitudes, Tin Cup Chalice" ...on and on
You can't discount all of his later records. Some times you might not like what you hear the first few times you listen. But they grow on you rapidly. Then you put it away for a few months pull it out and hear them with a whole new perspective finding things you completely missed .And find he hasn't lost a step in over 40 years. Always sharing wisdom with a new verse
@@roryschweinfurter4111 True - definitely wouldn't discount them. But, most musicians tend to concentrate more on firing up the touring machine later in their career, rather than new music. Great song! Jimmy has so many great songs including "Come Monday", "Changes in latitude, changes in attitudes", "A pirate looks at 40"... most have that laid back Island feel to them.
Back in the 90's it was a ritual for us to go to the Buffett concert every summer. It was a huge beach party in the parking lot that moves into the arena for the show. Everyone singing the words to all his songs. People dressed as sharks, lobsters, and of course parrots.......Buffett fans are called Parrotheads.......then after the concert is over the party moves back to the parking lot. Such a great time and memories.

This reminds me of the summer between junior high and high school, no job, no responsibilities, just fun. Besides his restaurants under this name, he also created retirement communities in a few states. He’s a very wealthy man.
Was at my First Buffett Concert in Cincinnati (that and Atl were the 2 Parrothead strongholds, that started his huge rise) , sitting in the grass with some friends from College waiting for the concert to start, and like another song of his, a friend of ours from college 7-8 years past just walked past us in the grass. He has great concerts. It truly is like a giant beach party. We took someone who would to quite a few head banging hard rock and alt rock type concerts, and he said this was the best concert he'd ever been to.
I agree!!!! Many of his songs are classics, but A Pirate always gets me.....I had a brother who was that exact person, just not a fit for this world. "I went down to Captain Tony's....." Last Mango in Paris......another one I am deeply moved by!
I see a lot of great suggestions, and I grew up listening to Buffett’s fun party songs on family road trips to the beach in the summer, but he also has some real sincere and chill songs that are strong. “Come Monday,” lHe Went to Paris,” “Son of a Son of a Sailor,” “A Pirate Looks At Forty,” and more.
My folks liked this song alot back in 1978. Gave them an excuse to mix up some margaritas I suppose. That sound is likely a xylophone played to sound like a steel pan drum. "Stepped on a pop top" -- back in the 70's, beer cans came with tabs you pulled off completely and then discarded. So if you were hanging out bare foot and drinking beer you had to take care that you didn't accidentally cut your feet on the discarded tabs. One of my summer roommates in college back in the late 80's worked as a roadie for Jimmy Buffett. She brought us a case of Corona beer courtesy of the tour when she got back in time for classes to start. She was the coolest.
This man (Jimmy Buffet) has copy righted the name Margaritaville. He has created and developed housing communities around the state of Florida and in other parts of the country. The latest one being a restaurant and bar only in Atlantic City, New Jersey. They are all name "Margaritaville." He has made untold millions off of the name "Margaritaville." Genius!
He wrote a lot of great songs, but this is Buffett's career-defining song. He said not too long ago that people never seem to realize that it's about a guy who's life is kind of a mess. There's so much humor and charm to the song that you almost can't see that, though, kind of like a favorite uncle who's so much fun and so sweet that you don't realize until you're older and look back that he was a drunk who's personal life was something of a disaster.
Jimmy Buffet is from Mississippi and if you look up one of a very popular song that he wrote is Cheese Burger Paradise which is a Burger joint that he ate at when he was young. I know it was one or the other! Waveland Mississippi or Bay St Louis Mississippi! Check out Cheese Burger in paradise, it's a cool song but true! I've always loved Jimmy's out look on life! RIP Jimmy! He was from Pascagoula, Mississippi, another great artist in the LONG line of greats from the Magnolia State! He had a club in Biloxi, Mississippi called Margaritaville. I haven't been to Biloxi in a while, but I assume it's still there.
I was in high school when this song was released. I remember my father asking me, "What does "I blew out my flip flop, stepped on a pop top" mean?" I told him it meant the guy's sandal broke and he stepped on the pull tab from a beer and cut his foot. My Dad said, "No. I know this is about drugs." I replied, "No Dad. This is about alcohol." I'll never forget that conversation. :-)

One of the concerts I’ve ever been to. At Buffett concerts it’s tradition for women to throw their bras up on stage. I’ve been to a lot of concerts in the 90’s and this was amazing. Not just because of the bra’s,it was just awesome. The Steve Miller Band put on a great show also.
I spent 5 years going boating in Indiana with friends, the entire lake would play Buffett non-stop. He was as much a part of the trip as much as the boat was. Not just for the tropics.
Rest In Peace Jimmy Buffett...Civilization WILL miss you very much. Thank you for the songs about Spirit, Questions, goals, victories and defeats...all with a tall cooool tasty beverage to help us get through it all.
You go to his concert its not only a scene with everyone wearing pirate shirts but your right he gives that Florida keys vibe fo sure. Thanks that was Awesome brought back memories of when I saw him. Cheers🍹
Oh man Buffets in the house. Got the pleasure couple decades ago seeing him at Lakewood amphitheater outside ATL.....such a party and soooo many beach balls in the air 😁. Long time Parrothead here, took a friend to a concert who had never attended a JB concert before. He said, "I've never been to a concert where EVERY person, knew EVERY word, to Every song!" LOL...it is true. And, the age range spans from children and grandchildren to those grandparent Parrotheads.
Jimmy used steel drums sometimes in his recordings. I used to listen to this great summer tune on a $5 transistor radio I got for my 10th birthday. No MTV, no Internet, no cell phones. Nothing. Only hoping you get a good reception on your radio. This song became its own legend and made Jimmy a gazillion dollars. He even has his own club called "The Margaritaviile" down in Florida.
Buffett fans are called Parrot Heads. He did a concert in Tallahassee after Florida had been hit by a couple of hurricanes. The concert was titled after one of his songs "Trying to Reason With Hurricane Season". All of the Houses on Fraternity Row were themed to songs from Buffet. His fans range in age from 10 to 110 and a lot of us are crazy (in a good way)
His concerts and pre partying tailgating is the best. You see all ages of people and races. It’s nothing but love, fun, people grilling and sharing food. So much fun. I’ve been to like 5 of concerts. Check out of his live videos and you’ll see the massive amount of people and how people are just having so much fun. Grass skirts, coconut bras etc
Are you kidding? You must be young, because I agree that millennials don't know/care about/listen to it at all, which is why it may seem underrated to you. But I'm 49, and folks about 10 years younger than I, and up to DEAD think of this song as their party ANTHEM. I've know people who have had this for their first dance at their WEDDINGS! Then they honeymooned on an island somewhere to live it out. Years later, after having kids, and actually finding a sitter so we could all meet at the bar for a night out, this song would come on, they'd cozy up to each other tight like they were all in love again, do a ton of tequila shots with/on each other, and then by the end of the song, have a sad, hollow look of lost youth. I knew 3 couples like this! Sad! Trust me, this song is actually OVERrated in my generation, and the ones before and after mine. If you really listen to, or read the lyrics, it really is kind of a downer song; the guy and his pathetic life are not too admirable. Just sayin'. Edit: Okay, I can see by your avatar that you're not a millennial, so sorry about that. But I still stand by several generations overappreciating this song as, 'brilliant,' and I just don't understand it. Tomato, TomAHto, I guess. ✌
Margaritville is the name of a restaurant. Jimmy Buffet wrote this song after eating there. He ate a cheeseburger and was inspired to write another song called Cheeseburger In Paradise.
Asia and BJ, you were pretty close when you were talking about the Caribbean. Actually it was closer to home, Key West, Florida. He spent many years down there( maybe he still does go down there), and that is where the original Margaritaviill restaurant was. He and his Coral Reefer Band used to play there frequently, and if you happened to be there at that time, you got a great show. That’s just one of many reasons I love the Florida Keys. I know your followers are going to recommend many of his great songs( he is a terrific songwriter and musician), so I’m going to add 2 of my favorites and hope you can check them out. “The Captain and the Kid”, and “ A pirate Looks at 40. They both will pull at your heartstrings. Great job as usual!! See you next video.😎👍👍👍
Asia & BJ, his "Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes" and "Cheeseburger In Paradise" are next for you!!

That's a Jamaican steel drum you're hearing. It really gives the song that Island vibe! Kicking back on the beach with a pina colada sort of thing.

Never really thought about it like that. I agree. The happy melody and the sad lyrics are a juxtaposition.

After your Magaritas you need to cruise on over to Cheeseburger In Paradise 🤤. Side note...his sister Lucy owns restaurant in Gulf Shores called Lulu's...it's awesome 😎🍔🍹🏖️
I grew up in Florida (by Madeira Beach) and when he lived here in the 70's/80s he used to pop into local bars and play - he is such a great guy!
You would really enjoy Cheeseburger in Paradise by him. His whole life is beach life. His music reflects this.
I remember when this song came out, it was a huge hit. I was 16 at the time and I remember buying the whole album after hearing it on the radio.
that last verse is so perfect.... great song.
Buffet live at an outdoor venue is a blast. We use to go see him every year.
A Big thank you for this one.
My pleasure!
Raised in Mobile, Alabama. Best song is Come Monday. Also He Went To Paris.
Born in Pascagoula Mississippi.
his live concerts are always a happenning with costumes, dances, and lots of drinking. his fans are called parotheads
@@ffjsb what a sad life you must have getting upset over a mistake by autocorrect.sure hope you get professional help soon, going through life being so judgemental and angry about nosence only leads to selfdestruction
Good times...seen more beach balls flying around than at a beach 😁
Long time Parrothead here, took a friend to a concert who had never attended a JB concert before. He said, "I've never been to a concert where EVERY person, knew EVERY word, to Every song!" LOL...it is true. And, the age range spans from children and grandchildren to those grandparent Parrotheads.
He's from fairhope Alabama but he would hang out in the keys a lot during his heyday, a pirate turns 40 is another good one
Jimmy is THE Florida vacation music. Makes me feel I'm on vacation already.
"Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt"
(the Salt! the Salt! the Salt!)
Margaritaville's overdubbed flute and recorder parts were played by Billy Puett using, as he recalls, a bottle of Cristal champagne as a muse.
RIP Jimmy💔 a true treasure!
You'd also do well to check out "He Went To Paris" and "A Pirate Looks At Forty."
Keep up the good life!
It was a steel drum commonly used in Caribbean music. Similar sound to a xylophone.
I think possibly a pan flute as well.
Steel Drums give it the island feel and vibes
I’m sure it’s been mentioned that those are Steel Drums.
Y’all are right, he’s a whole vibe.
Thanks for the reaction!
This is a great song, underappreciated.
@@LauraBunny I'm 45.
Nahhh not really imo. It is a good, set the mood type party song though
This was a big hit for Jimmy Buffett and was the inspiration for him building his Margaritaville Resort, hotel, bar and restaurant empire.
Go to key West Florida to his bar! We found after going on a cruise in the Caribbean. This song was played a lot on the ship. Best trip ever!
Love me some Buffett. Glad you reached.
Margaritville is the name of a restaurant. Jimmy Buffet wrote this song after eating there. He ate a cheeseburger and was inspired to write another song called Cheeseburger In Paradise.
Good ole MS boy. He wound up in Al. Gulf shores. He's laid back and has a lot of good songs. Even casinos named Margaritaville now
He is 76 now. He has 34 albums, 32 hits. You may want to try "Five o'Clocke Somewhere" w/ country star Alan Jackson.
Jimmy Buffet is one of the folks I listen to when it’s February, and gray, sleeting in the northeast.. I go for music from warmer, sunny places
Great reaction.

Jimmy Buffet and the Coral Reefer band are definitely a beach party band
