    As a proud Floridian, who grew up near the beach, Jimmy Buffett is the holy grail of tropical music. His concerts are always fun and his music will lift your spirits! This is a big rabbit hole, but one you will enjoy!

  • @bamachine
    @bamachine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Jimmy was born in Mississippi, grew up in Alabama(hence the twang) and after college moved to Key West(where he started writing the "island" music), then he spent most of his life on the Gulf Coast.

  • @thomasstambaugh5181
    @thomasstambaugh5181 2 ปีที่แล้ว +122

    Great tune. Underneath the happy island feel is the tragic story of an alcoholic becoming aware of his habit. In the first chorus, he sings "Some people claim that there's a woman to blame, but I know it's nobody's fault." By the end, he's singing "... and I know it's my own damn fault". It truly is a masterpiece of lyrics and music, creating the impression that "Margaritaville" is an island paradise -- then making it clear that it is a drunken delusion.
    It's easy to miss the real point of this real-life story.

    • @theccpisaparasite8813
      @theccpisaparasite8813 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      IKR, these kids totally missed it! That's part of the genius of the song. The juxtaposition of that jubilant island party music with a story of a guy wallowing in drunken despair over a situation he created.

      I always interpreted it as a guy getting over a break up. Going from blaming her for everything, to accepting "yeah, I fucked that up on my own"

    • @robertsmith-oh9mo
      @robertsmith-oh9mo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You really don't understand this song. The song mentions nothing about getting drunk and regretting hit life's decisions. There is a reference to drinking but not to getting drunk. The reference to there being a woman to blame and it being his fault. What male of the species hasn't been in the same situation with a woman when it comes to break up. there always doubts as to what went wrong and whose fault it was. Have you ever been to the Florida Keys? It is a different culture than anywhere else and it's fun to watch the tourists trying to fit in on their two week vacations and looking totally out of place. Lighten up and quit reading something into the song that isn't there. Another song to listen to is "There's a cowboy in the jungle."

    I was in the Marine Corps when this came out. I was with the 5th Marine Regiment which was based in an area of Camp Pendleton, CA called 33 Area aka Camp Margarita. Of course, this song became our unofficial regimental boozing song. About every 3rd or 4th song that played in the base club was this one. Good times!

    Jimmy Buffet, born on Christmas day and still 75 years young ! I love the lyrics how it starts as " nobodies fault" , then " hell it could be my fault " and ends with "its my own damn fault " . I think we all see times in our lives like that . I hope you continue on this parrothead ( what the fans are called ) journey. I've enjoyed Jimmy since i was 11 in '77. Jimmy's sister, Lucy, owns the actual inspiration for Margaritaville. Ono Island is located just off the coastline of Orange Beach, Alabama.
    When Hurricane Frederick hit, it literally changed the geography of the island. Florida tried to claim it, and Alabama said, "Oh no you don't!" Hence the name.

    • @beachbunnie5413
      @beachbunnie5413 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jimmy started out in Mobile Alabama as a "Country & Western" singer with some Rock & Roll influence, but growing up on the cusp of the Caribbean, he quickly added "Island" to "his sound". Margaritaville was one of his first adventures into that, and is the unofficial anthem of his fan base.

    Another great reaction guys. Jimmy is great and an awesome songwriter. Anyone that can write a hit song about a cheeseburger is pretty darn good!! Try these songs on for size...Defying Gravity, A Pirate looks at Forty, Somewhere Over China and Son of a Sailor. Oh, I forgot Cheeseburger in Paradise.

    I’ve seen Come Monday and Son of a Sailor mentioned and those are great as well, but my favorite is He Went To Paris. And that’s not a bad vacation destination either; even though the song itself is more introspective. I almost forgot Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes too.

    Buffet has many great songs, "Come Monday", "Let's Get Drunk" (Not for kiddos), "Cheeseburger in Paradise", "Son of A Son of A Sailor", :Fins", and "A Pirate Looks At 40" just to name a few. Their fans are called Parrotheads, his concerts are a blast. He has done a duet with Alan Jackson "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere".
    BTW, "Margaritaville" is Key West, FL.

    Jimmy is his own genre with a cult-like following called Parrotheads. His concerts are a blast! Everyone is in costumes relating to his song lyrics. He is a marketing genius. Margaritaville was his breakout song and gives it's name to a chain of destination restaurants. He is also an author of several books, my favorite of which is "A Salty Piece Of Land".

    For all you kids out there, a "pop top" is a little metal tab you used to have to pull off the top of a beer or pop can. Instead of pulling the tab up and pushing in the tab on cans like you do now, there was an aluminum ring that pulled off a wedge shaped piece of metal that left the opening you'd drink out of. Pulling open the tab caused it to curl, and it was completely detached from the can, so if you just threw it on the ground, someone who was barefoot could step on it and cut their foot.

    • @talltulip
      @talltulip 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Haha! I was thinking about submitting a very similar comment. I remember that people would make chains out of those pull-tabs. Our neighbor even made a bunch of those chains and hung them from the ceiling in the passage between the living room and hallway, because they didn't have beads to hang (which was a decorating trend at the time). Those guys drank a LOT of beer!

      I was 'lucky' enough when running around at a campground with friends to trip and fall on one that was lying in the grass on its side. Unluckily for me, this was a campground at a lake, so I was shirtless.
