Hi Britt. Jimmy did the song first. His popularity became a huge tidal wave. His fans (called parrotheads) were crazy for his music. He decided to open some Margaritaville locations and eventually his song Cheeseburger in Paradise also spawned a chain of restaurants. These and other business decisions led Jimmy to become a billionaire. He was considered a rock guy but his crossover favorability with country fans was huge too. In fact there is a song called 5 o'clock somewhere which he did as a duet with country star Alan Jackson. Appreciate the video this morning. Now go and put your feet up and start having the day that YOU deserve. ; )) Oh and that was steel drum that you heard.
I just want to hold her hand and walk her through the last 5 decades! She NEEDS to go back and start with SNL day 1 to see what people were REALLY up to all these years and what life was like because it was live and reflected pop culture EVERY WEEK. Y'all tell her!

The line about "stepped on a pop top" is one you're too young to understand. Back in the 70s, when this song was written, soda and beer cans had a different type of opening. You'd pull on a ring, and the little piece of metal would come completely off. It was very thin, and the edges were quite sharp. They would also curve a bit as you pulled them off. And then people would throw them on the ground, where the curved and sharp edges would stick up. I think all of us who were alive then had the experience of getting a cut either on a foot or a finger from one of those things.
The song came first and became a hit. Jimmy Buffett built his Margaritaville resort, restaurant and bar business empire around this hit song. There are various locations around like in the Florida Keys and in Las Vegas.
Ah, yeah, there are lots of Margaritavilles around, all stemming from this song! Also, Cheeseburger in Paradise. I highly recommend so many of his songs - A Pirate Looks at Forty, Changes in Lattitudes, Come Monday, Volcano, He Went to Paris, Pencil Thin Mustache, Son of a Son of a Sailor, Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit, It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere... there are just so many lovely songs. He created a sort of laid-back, relax and drink vacation music vibe that is his own brand. I might stay away from 'Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw' - probably outside of your TH-cam rules :)
The “Margaritaville” in the song, I’ve always believed, was not a physical place but rather a frame of mind, a laid back, alcohol induced party lifestyle sort of thing that you could live wherever you happen to be. And pop tops were the original removable tabs used to open aluminum drink cans. Prior to them you had to physically puncture the can with a can opener, then came the pop top which, when you pulled it off, would curl up and was definitely capable of cutting you if you stepped on it. Then came today’s version which opens the can but remains attached to the can. You youngsters missed out on so much lol. Good luck and can’t wait to see you back!!!♥️♥️♥️
Jimmy passed away recently at 75. Great singer song writer and I am lucky to see him in concert a few times. What a vibe. I used to live in Key West ,JB had a bar called the Green Parrot where he would play every third Saturday night when he was in town. When playing, it was just him, his guitar, and a pitcher of beer on a bar stool. Best Buffet ever!!! When in town he would stay on his sailboat at the Sunbeam marina. We lived across the street. Jimmy Buffett was amazing. His concerts were just a party. A chance to have a great time, and just love life. If you have a chance, check out the song called “Fins.” Rest easy Jimmy. Thanks for all the memories.
Everyone has answered the which came 1st on Margaritaville, but I want to also share that his fan base was huge and very loyal! Not only did the have the nickname of Parrot Heads, but they followed him around from concert to concert, in RVs and even buses. They set up tailgating parties that put football tailgates to shame. I went to a concert complements of a local radio station and it was eye opening. I always liked Jimmy Buffet 's music, but had no clue any of this was going on. The concert was one of the best I have been to. Jimmy performed for about 3 hours, non stop. His band took a lengthy pause in middle, but Jimmy kept talking to the audience and showing videos of his Parrot Head fans on a big screen. He was barefoot, wearing cargo shorts and a tropical print shirt. It was great!

Jimmy got tired of seeing T-shirts with his name misspelled so he took over his own Marketing… There are Margaritaville hotels, restaurants, retirement communities, casinos etc…Jimmy was a genius!!!

Great video and glad you lile when Carribean meets calyspso meets fold and country! Stay beautiful young lady!
Jimmy started out trying to make it in country... then he visited Key West. He fell in love with the lifestyle and stayed there. While he had more success on the rock charts, he inspired a generation of country artists, from Kenny Chesney to Alan Jackson (who shared billing with him on their #1 country hit, "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere". So many great songs from his catalog. A couple that get overlooked include "A Cowboy In The Jungle" and "Son of a Son of a Sailor" :D
This song was so iconic, it actually created a whole new marketing concept of Margaritaville type party destinations and still going strong today. It was absolutely a huge hit and made Jimmy very famous.
When this song was played at the bars I would go to in Texas, everybody would say where's the salt, where's the salt, where's the salt! When he would say that Frozen concoction that helps me hang on. Everybody would say hang on hang on hang on! He has a lot of good songs, that you would like!
🏝🍹🩴I've never heard a bad word when it comes to Jimmy. This song is still popular. I can't tell you how many times I've lit my beach candle, turned on his music and had a margaritas in my hand. Those are great days even with a virgin margaritas. ❤
Jimmy Buffett’s clever laid-back songs touched a wish for simplicity that grew in many of us boomers as life got more complicated. Buffett seems to have circled the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean like an aquisitive butterfly, picking up a little reggae here, some calypso there. Then he breathed some country chords on it all, so that the music gently filled his sails for leisurely cruise into our hearts. In my own case, when he sang about the Keys and the Caribbean, personal experience produced memories of islands in the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Siam, and a couple of hundred miles of the Mun River, the Mekong, and the Tonle Sap. Also, I’d guess that a very shrewd Jimmy Buffet didn’t get drunk nearly as often as he sang about drinking.
Britt, the original Margaritaville is in Key West, Florida. How the song came about was Jimmy was a struggling guitarist and songwriter in Key West and asked the owner of the bar what he should do to get a hit song. The owner, a legendary barkeep, told him, "Why don't you write about that margarita in front of you." He did and the rest is history. Jimmy was one of the biggest booster of the laid-back Key West lifestyle. It made Key West one of the most popular tourist locations in the U.S. Every concert he gave had thousands of "Parrotheads" in attendance. He was catagorized as a country artist but many considered him Caribbean country artist.
So sad to hear of Jimmy Buffett's recent passing. He was a great singer-songwriter, musician & actor. His songs had such a laid back island feel to them. I had a couple of his albums. He had a lot of hits especially in the 70's-80's such as “Son Of Son Of A Sailor”, "Come Monday", “Fins”, “He Went To Paris”, “Cheeseburger In Paradise”, “A Pirate Looks At Forty”, “One Particular Harbor”, “Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes”, “Volcano”, “Boat Drinks”, “Pencil Thin Mustache” etc.
There is a Margaritaville at the City Walk at Univeral Studios right before you get into Islands of Adventure. Just across the border from me in SC they have a Margaritaville retirement community for the seniors who still want to party.
Jimmy also did a song called Come Monday. He started out.sort folk music but quickly.evolved his.own sound. By the way I think all of of your followers were surprised to see this video post after yesterdays goodbye.🤗
Song tells the story of a man goes on vacation, gets drunk, and gets a tattoo. And it’s named after the drink. Of course it’s a Country song! It’s also mentioned in Alan Jacksons, 2003 tune, “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.” It’s a nice follow up, and Jimmy Buffett is featured in that. Song reached number 13 on the Billboard Country chart in 1977. Crossover from Pop and Adult Contemporary. Made reappearance on Pop and Country charts after his death.
Jimmy was the King of Caribbean themed music. Margaritaville is not a physical place in the song. It's a state of mind. You can be in Manhattan and still be in "Margaritaville". The song is about a guy just chilling on an island enjoying the Caribbean lifestyle and Margaritas. This song spawned the Margaritaville chain.
The song came out in 1977. At that time, there was no such thing as Margaritaville. It was just a clever, tongue in cheek way of saying he was drunk on margaritas. The song is basically his view of what Margaritaville would be like. In the song, apparently, his woman left him of his own doings, and some people were saying it was her fault. The first chorus ends with him saying it’s nobody’s fault. Then, he goes to “It could be my fault”. Then it ends with him taking full blame with “It’s my own damn fault”. Jimmy had even had several people ask him after the song came out where Margaritaville was, and he said, “It’s anywhere you want it to be. It’s in your mind”. The Margaritaville clubs/restaurants came many years later. I’ve had their food there. It is really good. Went to the one in Panama City.
Jimmy Buffett was recently referred to as the godfather of lifestyle. His music is about escapism. Concerts were epic. Been to a few and margaritville’s myself.
When this came out your return flight was sometimes referred to as a flip flop and stepping on a pop top could also mean getting too drunk to function. So that line could mean getting drunk and missing your flight home and, hence, staying in Mexico all season.
If you want a deeper song, and one if my favorites from Jimmy Buffet, try “A Pirate Looks at 40”. Definitely something to look back on when you reach middle age or in the song’s reference age of 40.
after watching this full video. I would love to just Kiss you on your forehead and tell you how much i appreciate you supporting this song. thank you, Britt. You rock.
He created Margaritaville. It is a place in your mind initially. Now, there are hotels and housing developments. He made a $1.5 billion fortune from this. It's how to relax. Listen to some of his other songs to get the vibe.
"Come Monday" (1974), "Cheeseburger in Paradise" (1978), "Why Don't We Get Drunk" (1973), "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" (1977), and "Son of a Son of a Sailor" (1978) are just a few you might want to check out. BE WARNED. This is tropical rock. It's all about boats, beaches, and babes. Listening to these songs will make you long for the absence of chaos. You might leave everything behind find a beach and just stare at the water. My first apartment was sweltering hot. I had an air conditioner in one room the bedroom. The rest i just opened up the windows and let the air blow through. Some days i would sit back in my shower with lukewarm water on the rain setting. I would drink some fruity alcohol drink and melt away listening to Buffet. I would say welcome to the rabbit hole, but it is more like a canyon. He has lost of good songs.
Jimmy wrote so many good songs and most have that island feel but my favorite is one that is a little different. It’s a song about missing his wife called ‘Come Monday’
Jimmy Buffet was one of my all-time favorite concerts! It is like going to a big party wolith a bunch of fun and light-hearted folk. I grew up woth his music - he was - and will always be - a legend that made an incredible, lasting impression on people. You cannot help but smile listening to his music
Virtually the same age of Jimmy, his music was the story of a "Chill" life, well lived and frequently introspective. Must listens are "He went to Paris", "A Pirate Looks At 40", and "Come Monday". I was fortunate to enjoy him my entire life.
The drums you asked about are called steel drums. It gives that calypso sound. They were prominent in his music. Love your reactions. Keep up the good work!
Awe,..part of the fun of his videos is watching them. Not just the lyrics. He's just so awesome. Millions and millions of people miss him so much. Margaritaville is about h im getting drunk and drinking Margaritas.
Anywhere the margaritas are flowing is Margaritaville. Frozen. In the first verse it's nobody's fault, in the second he thinks it could be his fault, and in the third he knows it's his own damn fault.
This is what was originally called "Gulf and Western" but is now known as "Trop-Rock". Amazing band as well. The steel drums are called "Pans" and his band featured the best player. One of his back-up singers was in the band "Arrested Development." Nadirah Shakoor is her name. I only had the pleasure to see him and his amazing band 69 times in 5 countries.
I saw him in Detroit back in the 80s. One of his background singers/dancers for that show was some guy named Ed Bradley. Yeah, him. And I'm not kidding!
There are MANY Margaritaville hotels/resorts in the states, as well as Mexico and some Island destinations. There are 3 in Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg TN. We have stayed at the Gatlinburg location, and it was a wonderful experience. The shower in our King room was HUGE; plenty of room to do ANYTHING imaginable in it.They have onsite dining restaurant, and a bar. One of the Pigeon Forge locations has a rooftop pool with a bar. If you get the chance, try to stay at one of their locations at least once.
Margaritaville was his own mythological place. And we all felt like we'd been there. About 35? years later, he started the Margaritaville resort/casino chain. I went to one in Shreveport.
Back when the song was written a pop top probably referred to a pull tab that was commonly used. Basically it had a ring you put your finger in and pulled to open the can. The edges of the metal that came off could cut you.
I saw him in California right after he wreaked his foot and he was in a cast. We loved the concert sitting on a grassy hill. Such a great time. Every one loved him. Sun and Jimmy in 1977.
So quickly out of said "retirement/break"? Funny girl, it's so wonderful that your boosts of energy & curiosity benefit all of us viewers. Thanks with best wishes and congrats to the entire family when the water breaks!
I saw Jimmy in concert 8 times, the first time with my parents and my boyfriend (who later became my husband), they introduced me to him when I was a young teenager. I lost my husband three years ago but was fortunate enough to have been able to take my kids with their significant others to his concert last summer…they grew up listening to him as well as hearing us talk about him and his concerts. What great memories we made around our tailgates and summer nights listening to Jimmy, he will be missed but always loved.
Jimmy did a collaboration with Alan Jackson "its 5 o'clock somewhere".....yes Jimmy is the "head Parrot" of Margaritaville!!! been to the one in LV...awesome place!!!
The Original Margaritaville is a locally owned restaurant in Sandusky, Ohio, which opened in 1981 long before singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett opened his chain of restaurants and trademarked the name-making this the original one without any association with Jimmy Buffett. Jimmy Buffett opened his first successful "Margaritaville" retail store in Key West, Florida, following a failed Margaritaville in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Jimmy Buffet became synonymous with Key West and he helped birth the bar/restaurant the resorts and the cruise line. But here in Florida he is like our biggest celebrity and is loved all over the state for his philanthropy and taking care of the ocean and marine life
He's my most famous neighbor, well, after Brett Farve, from here in South MS. Margaritaville is a brand he created after this song. We had a Margaritaville Casino here in Biloxi, but it closed down after a hurricane. Now there is a Margaritaville Hotel that has arcades, pools, lazy rivers, and bars.

Also, a bar in Nashville.
@@CodyCloudWalker- Key West definitely personifies the lyrics in Margaritaville.
Margaritaville is where your mind is when you’re drunk on margaritas and wondering what happened to your relationship with your woman.
Thanks to the branding and marketing, "Margaritaville" is the most profitable song in history.
Not just bars and restaurants. I have friends who retired to a community of homes in Daytona, Fl called "Margaritaville"!!

Yes Britt Jimmy Buffett created Margaritaville. It a place he alone invented and is now celebrated around the world.
Jimmy Buffett is a Legend, I listen to his music often, takes me to a chill simple place, love the ocean vibes he always brings.....only one Jimmy
Smart and sweet reactions. Hoping you react to another great vacation song, “It’s 5:00 Somewhere,” with Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson.
Everything margaritaville is Jimmy. He built and empire off one song.
All of Jimmy's songs are feel good.
He was
catagorized as a country artist but many considered him Caribbean country artist.
Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett did one of Alan's songs together. It's 5 oclock somewhere!
he created Margaritaville, at least the intellectual property. Try "cheeseburger in Paradise" a Buffet classic. On the rocks for sure
Hi Britt, they're called "Steel Drums" Jazz, Reggae and Pop genres music (mostly).
Once again friend you're over thinking, "Margaritaville" is a state of mind. Meaning it wherever you are with the right mind set.
Jimmy was just an all-around chill dude. Rest in peace my friend
“Come Monday” a great song deserving your reaction.
The sadness of knowing I will never see show 22 breaks my heart. Thank you sir for the great times
I feel like Jimmy was a music genre all his own.
Jimmy Buffet wrote most of the songs he sings. Hes also written several really good books. A completely different song of his is He Went To Paris.
Jimmy Buffett was recently referred to as the godfather of lifestyle. His music is about escapism. Concerts were epic. Been to a few and margaritville’s myself.
It doesn't matter your latitude Margarita Ville is an attitude
When this came out your return flight was sometimes referred to as a flip flop and stepping on a pop top could also mean getting too drunk to function. So that line could mean getting drunk and missing your flight home and, hence, staying in Mexico all season.
Jimmy was an American icon, and his empire of Margaritaville and Parrot Heads will live on forever.
If you want a deeper song, and one if my favorites from Jimmy Buffet, try “A Pirate Looks at 40”. Definitely something to look back on when you reach middle age or in the song’s reference age of 40.
Absolutely.
after watching this full video. I would love to just Kiss you on your forehead and tell you how much i appreciate you supporting this song. thank you, Britt. You rock.
Margaritaville is a beach chair in the sand, sun fading to te west, boiled shrimp on the breeze, 'Rita at the ready.
He created Margaritaville. It is a place in your mind initially. Now, there are hotels and housing developments. He made a $1.5 billion fortune from this. It's how to relax. Listen to some of his other songs to get the vibe.
Buffet had his own genre. Island Rock or Trop Rock
I'd also add 'Volcano' and 'Sharks' ;) maybe even 'Pencil Thin Mustache'
A Pirate Looks At 40!!
I was 8 years old singing along to this when it came out. Probably explains a lot about me now.
Jimmy had so many timeless songs, many hits but for me A pirate looks at 40 was my absolute favorite
RIP jimmy B. I am so glad i got to see you live. You were diffidently on of my hero's.
Jimmy was a legend! He was known world wide...played everywhere!!! His concerts and their party atmosphere is legendary!
Jimmy wrote so many good songs and most have that island feel but my favorite is one that is a little different. It’s a song about missing his wife called ‘Come Monday’
That was his early days, right, in the LA song frenzy, before he had locked in to the tropical vibe. Love that song.
I first heard of "Margaritaville" in the song, then a lifestyle.
You should listen to ‘Come Monday’. Another great Jimmy song
I will keep it in mind, thanks!
“Humbly swaggy.” I don’t think I’ve ever heard a better description of Jimmy Buffet. 🩴
Awe,..part of the fun of his videos is watching them. Not just the lyrics. He's just so awesome. Millions and millions of people miss him so much.
Margaritaville is about h im getting drunk and drinking Margaritas.
Jimmy and his band the coral reefers hung out around bars and dives around Florida on the boat for years. Son of a Sailor is another great song
Gonna miss you Britt.
Hurry back.
I think you can't help but have a Beautiful Baby.
He also made margarita machines for home use. I have one. He’s the original pirate.
Jimmy Buffet created a bar in Key Largo Fla. called Margaritaville. The first and original. The rest are franchises
Margueritaville is a state of mind. Listen to the lyrics and it will tell you he is dreaming of being in another place.
Jimmy came up with the song, then as his popularity increased, Margaritaville restaurants started appearing.
Song came first, by many years, and then, due to the popularity of the song, the physical locations.
IF IM CORRECT THAT HIT CAME OUT IN EARLY 70 TO MID 70S👍 COOL TUNE
Margaritaville was a state of mind. Companies cashed in on the success of the song to name their bars etc. Everyone liked Jummy Buffett
