For myself, animation sets the stories free and allows Trek/Sci-Fi to explore territory that other mediums can't easily reach.

I have to say, I don’t understand the criticism that anything Lower Decks has done is “too silly/out there to accept as Star Trek Canon”. Star Trek’s already featured a giant sentient rabbit, Rumpelstiltskin, people getting sucked into a giant board game, seductive ghosts living in candles and… Q.
That’s the beauty of Star Trek: It can tell some of the most thought-provoking, gripping stories ever told in sci-fi… and it can also be very silly.

Dude: Cubes & Spheres aren't 'out there', they are "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"

It reminded me of 'Lonely Among Us'.

Nick, the beautiful thing about Lower Decks being animated is this: the galaxy is huge, and there's plenty of quirky stuff that happened, too.

Hard core ST fan since 1967 and this episode was fantastic. Like you said, people need to get over themselves and go with each series as it presents itself and it's greatness. LDs IS ST canon. Super ST themes here and yeah, photonic lifeforms in very basic and universal geometric shapes makes sense, as they are technologically originated, in the ST universe we have evolved with.

This episode is basically West Side Story with Romy and Julie

    1. As one of those 'hardcore' fans you were talking about, I absolutely loved this episode. I was laughing throughout, and it is my favourite of the season so far.
    2. Borg ships come in many spaces: cubes, sphere, and even the diamond you suggested. The Borg don't hold copyright or a trademark over geometric shapes.
    3. The episode 'Who Mourns for Adonais?' features Apollo, not Zeus.
    4. This episode reminds me a bit of the TNG episode 'Lonely Among us', with the Anticans and the Selay
    5. TOS is fully of silly stuff - a giant hand grabbing the Enterprise, Space Lincoln, witches from MacBeth, etc. Star Trek can be silly, it's still canon.

Uhhh, Zeus wasn't the one that Kirk & Co. encountered in "Who Mourns For Adonais?" That was Apollo. OTOH though, it doesn't mean that Olly cannot be a descendant of Zeus. As Apollo stated, it wasn't unusual for the gods to take mortals to love, and no doubt Zeus certainly did, or there would have been no Hercules. So yeah, Olly could absolutely be a distant descendant of Zeus, but I just had to say that Zeus was not on TOS.
As for the Orbs and Cubes being too weird, why is that a turn-off? Trek is supposed to be about strange new worlds and new civilizations, and these two were definitely among the strangest. I found this episode fun, but definitely not one of the best.

  • @ShawnHCorey
    @ShawnHCorey 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

This episode reminds me of two others. Olly is similar to Amanda Rogers in the TNG episode True Q. And the orbs and cubes conflict is similar to TNG's The Outrageous Okona conflict, with the same ending.

1:25 my dude, you're talking about a series that has had weird aliens who exist solely as special effects in pretty much every season of every series..... glowing cubes aren't tHAT weird compared to stuff like a Microbrain.... or Horta.

  • @bjorn00000
    @bjorn00000 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

The episode was less weird and much more paint-by-the-numbers, if anything. Everything just seemed predictable, especially once it was clear that one of the orbs was missing as well. I was more shocked that T'Ana could assault Boimler and not get arrested.
(And "Who Mourns for Adonis" had Apollo, not Zeus!)

Boimler has been referencing the "bointers" and strangly its actually working for him.

Borg didn't just use cube. Borg spheres were used by the Borg as scout ships or long-range tactical vessels.

Its easy to take ourselves too seriously and dismiss an animation. But this show does a better job of delivering the ideals of pragmatism than any other Star Trek show outside of Next Gen. Remember we're watching sci-fi, the thing that makes Star Trek, Star Trek is the ideals. This was more true to the theme than the season finale of SNW for sure. So why is fighting lizard men less goofy than brokering peace between a race of energy beings? Fighting lizard men isn't very pragmatic.

I've watched all Star Trek and the Orbs vrs Cubes was very Star Trek to me. I can see it would be done differently in live action, but it would defo work!

You're absolutely right about some of the episodes and B plots feeling like fillers. If they are going to do that then they had the opportunity of making an episode where the crew does a true "shore leave" instead of an assignment or mission. I think it would be more interesting than the writers pulling random new aliens out of their butts.
Granted, I did love the Starbase 80 episode and the main Klingon plot of episode 4 but I'm hopeful that we get better for the final few and special. To me season 4 had to be best string of good episodes and plot build up. This season feels like the writers are giving up on complex story telling and just slopply tying loose ends(Jennifer Yikes!).

To bad, Olly would've been a great addition for Lower Decks. I'm happy that T'Lyn is back, hope the episode will be a T'Lyn episode.

Not my favourite this one... something just didn't gel for me. The laurels, maybe. The simple cube vs sphere issue which harks back to that TOS episode, Let That Be Your Last Battlefield, and you see the Romeo and Juliet thing a mile away. But still good, just not the best.

I have to say I was originally intrigued with season5 and the whole thing about Mariner hunting for spacial anomalies. Shades of Lacano and the previous season. This thread seems to have been dropped in favour of story of the week. I will keep my fingers crossed that next week will push the whole arc forward. 😊

Hey, is it just me or does the lower decks trailer for this season not matching the actual episode footage
For example, boimler doesn't have a mustache in the trailer but then on the episode he has a mustache???

I think, people forget lower decks is very self aware and parodying the franchise. It takes it self seriously when it needs too, but are photonic life forms in geometric shapes really that out there when you compare it to literally anything else in the shows? All of the series have their moments of whacky unseriousness and that’s frankly why a lot of us are drawn to the show. The original series itself had some unusual moments that this episode even arcs back to, in a utopian science focused show, you also have Greek gods as literal beings. Do we really need to draw a line at what is too whacky?
I think it’s fair to add we all on occasion need reminding, we cannot change any of the shows and we cannot unrelease them. We can take it seriously and admire and appreciate established lore, but it’s not our story we’re telling, enjoy what we are lucky to even have.

I am way more accepting of cubes and spheres as part of Star Trek canon than I am that there would be a Starbase in a post capitlaist society that would just get completely neglected and allowed to fall apart for no particular reason. And why does no one point out that it was Apollo and not Zeus in Who Mourns for Adonis?

Oh I don't mind. L D is still a wonderful star trek show. Much better than modern odd trek, of course I don't agree with everything but that would be truly amazing. It's just great. Look at a bit more SF it's full of square & round ships (books tv film) 😊

What's the point of having an animated show if you can't go out balls to the walls crazy with the visuals. If you don't you can just make it regular live actions.

Of course it's canon, disco is not (teenage show that deliberately is not following canon & proclaimed they're ignorance of canon with pride! ) it's badly written no attention to detail just plain bizarre. LD is the wonderful polar opposite! I do know someone that likes disco as pulp sf . LD is done with love ❤️ & it shows 🎉

Truth of the matter is the stories are getting worse because I'd rather put strange new worlds and keep this when this first started it was great now they know they're not going to be on anymore the episodes will get worse why don't you just put them on that Friday night at 10:00😮

I thought the episode was entertaining. I don't watch Lower Decks for thought provoking episodes like many of the non-animated shows have featured during their time onscreen.

Get real Lower decks is the cute bastard child of all the series. It was used to put easter eggs and show us where lesser officers end up. Mariner would have been long gone if not for Mommy and Daddy. She acted out because of dead friends which she had no hand in. Go see a Shrink but do not put people in danger. Boimler was her Spock, Cause we all know that Kirk was Kirk caus he had a great second officer to support and babysit him.

I’ve enjoyed lower decks but this has been pure garbage. I have been coincidentally waking up early for other reasons and I’ll go ahead and watch. It has felt like a waste of sleep time and I definitely don’t 2nd watch. This is TNG season 1 level disappointment.

This is what happens when you take riders from a show like Rick and Morty and tell them to write something like Star Trek you're going to have dog s*** come out all the time. Don't get me wrong I love Rick and Morty I think it's hilarious but this is the problem we have here you let someone that makes a adult cartoon such as like family Guy or South Park create a show based off of Star Trek
