From Heart Machine, the award-winning team behind critically-acclaimed titles Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash, comes Hyper Light Breaker, a new co-op rogue-lite adventure set in the beloved Hyper Light Drifter universe. Hyper Light Breaker is a brand-new entry in the Hyper Light franchise, with a unique story fully realized in 3D for the first time. Set decades prior to Drifter, Hyper Light Breaker has you take on the role of a Breaker, a mercenary tasked with entering the Overgrowth. Using a combination of fast-paced hack-and-slash combat, ranged weaponry and gadgets, players can expect to fight through and explore a wide array of procedurally-generated open worlds. Though you’ll start your journey trying to help the settlement, it’s clear that there’s something sinister in this long-forgotten land. Only through tenacity and rigorous exploration will you uncover the dark truths of the Crowns, The Abyss King and this brutal, eerie new landscape. Players can choose to play alone or with friends to explore open worlds, create new builds, rip through hordes and overcome the Crowns and the Abyss King.

You guys did a great job keeping the hyper light aesthetic while moving to 3d.
Now, we got a mix of zelda+risk of rain 2...
No they absolutely didn't.
@@alastor8091 and that's your opinion lol 🤷♂
@@NoobishEli no waaaay? Really???? Tool.
It looks better than the early trailers but I agree.
As much as I would like to see something more from the HLD franchise, HLB feels very tonally different from the mystique that really made the original unique- and I find it hard to believe that a similar emphasis on exploration can be kept with procedurally generated areas compared to handcrafted dungeons and proper level design. I want to be excited for it but I’m not convinced it’ll bring the same energy that made me so invested in HLD.
I feel like this too. I really just wanted more hld. Not more solar ash. This feels like solar ash rogue lite with hld skin :/
I mean it's a Rogue like, so having unique crafted set pieces wouldn't really make sense in a game that you're likely meant to have dozens if not hundreds of runs in.
Not saying it's good or bad, but it is different. By design.
@@KP_Uravityas someone who loved solar ash and HLD i see this as an absolute win
@@KP_Uravity3rd person multiplayer rogue lite with Solar Ash's aesthetic sounds really dope ngl. I'm really digging the visuals.
I think HLB is gonna have more replayability than HLD at the cost of being much more simple and less mysterious. It will be a totally different experience but I think it will still be fun
Getting huge Risk of Rain 2 vibes
Finally, Risk of Rain 3
@@gunnertoad1913 Hyper Rain Breaker
Has nobody here played Solar Ash?😂
@@silenthell666they're referring to the gameplay, not artstyle, because it's very similar to ROR2
I bet the gameplay will feel significantly different. Risk of Rain 2 (like Risk of Rain 1) has a lot of very plodding "run away and spam" gameplay whereas this looks like it (like Hyper Light Drifter) has much more focus on making your individual actions very intentional. Bigger slower weighter melee attacks. Tho the guns look like they allow for some "run away and spam".
Glad to hear back from you Heart Machine! I was surprised to not see Alex Preston narrate this video though (Michael Clark did a good job regardless). I hope everything is all good with Alex!
Yeah, I definitely hope he’s doing alright. (Also, sorry for correcting, but his name is spelt Alx)
This looks absolutely amazing, but I feel it's missing part of the creepy, hostile feeling from hyper light drifter from the sharp/jagged edges of the pixel art. Everything looks really smooth, and although it looks really good and I loved it in solar ash, it's just tonally very different. Maybe some of the enemies and architecture could be changed while keeping the environments and characters the same to contrast them from each other. Also there seems to be a lack of impact to attacks that made the combat in drifter feel so deliberate and satisfying.
Overall though I'm very excited, and curious to see how an open world roguelite would work.
I think a part of the "creepiness" comes from the fact that HLD is top-down. Obscuring the sky makes the game feel more claustrophobic. It's nearly impossible to get the same feeling in a 3D game without making the whole game take place indoors.
By default you're going to have more to see and more space to move so it's not going to feel as liminal or secretive.
I am excited for the game, I just think a lot of people didn't want a genre change from the same IP. It's a very rare thing to happen in games and I get why it's weird.
I feel like that could also be intentional, Hyper Light Drifter feels like a dying world, or one that has already died and is just there. This one is mentioned that they're trying to bring back civilization after war, so there's more hope and that shows with the artstyle
Phew, good thing you’re not the developer and just some loser with shitty taste & ideas 😅
Maybe just play it in a lower resolution if you miss the pixels that bad
@@ApolloMclaren 🤣
Hate how almost everyone in this comment section is pooh-poohing the differences this game has with its predecessor. These guys want to go in a different direction, I trust they can pull it off! *LET THEM COOK.*
The developers deserve to know if there's a lack of interest compared to the first game.
Just as the devs are free to go in a direction they want, players are free to express their disappointment. I would have preferred more of the HLD tone and exploration, but I'll give this a miss as I don't enjoy rogue likes. I wish the devs all the best.
Actually though. HLD was their first game to get some funds and their feet off the ground in order to make bigger and more ambitious projects. No clue why anyone's complaining. Maybe we'll get a HLD2 someday who knows? But i just think it's awesome to see more stuff in-universe. It could be a racing game for all i care- it's just a cool universe.
Honestly I'm not too put off by the procedural generation, the way they described it in the livestreams made it sound more like deep rock galactic's procedural generation than it did something like minecraft.
Overall pretty excited!!
@@mageferago It was obvious to me for a long time that was what it was gonna be, especially since the Edge magazine had Alx saying that there would be a lore reason for why it even shifts.
Minecraft and deeprock generated terrain accomplished the same thing 😂 idk why you'd be bothered by one over the other
@petercottantail7850 just bcus they are both procedurally generating caves does not mean the way they do that is 1:1
@@petercottantail7850Deep Rock essentially uses a bunch of cave geometry presets and aligns them alongside the dirt blocking off the entrance/exit to each cave. So youre essentially dealing with a ton of hand crafted levels but aligned randomly
Really though- its personally a better alternative to playing the same map over and over again like in Risk of Rain. At least theres SOME variation. But everything is still handcrafted just placed differently
Looks like it’s coming together nicely!! Crossing fingers for a Switch 2 version down the line. Drifter is one of my all time favourite Switch games.
I'm overall kinda excited for the game, the primary issue I have is that I'm not psyched about the paragliders. It feels like everything since Breath of the Wild has had a paraglider and I won't lie they don't feel like an original or interesting way to explore a game world anymore.
Part of what made me fall in love with Solar Ash Kingdom was that the exploration and movement felt fluid, dynamic, and I wasn't restricted to slow-falling in whatever direction I wanted to go as the primary means of exploration like you would on a paraglider. Not to mention that Solar Ash felt fairly unique in terms of movement all on its own, and I was really hoping a movement system like that would be present in HLB, but I can see that's likely not going to be the case.
I'll probably still end up getting Hyper Light Breaker and playing a fair bit because I want to support the developers. I figured early-ish feedback would be appreciated, even though I know that at this point it's extremely unlikely to change much.
Get over it jeez
While i'm fairly unfamiliar with the HL series thus far, i totally agree with your sentiments about the glider stuff. I think it'd be cool if they added movement customization options for your build like x piece of gear can help you run super fast or z piece of gear will make you hover instead. I feel that this would allow people to choose their preferred method of mobility and make it more interesting than the usual copy paste zelda glider. but im hopeful nonetheless.
Yeah, I agree regarding the paragliders. These look right out of BotW or Fortnite. I’m not necessarily against having a slow-descent airborne mechanic, but I would definitely prefer something other than paragliders. I’m hopeful that they’ll consider coming up with something more creative and unique to the Hyper Light universe.
This seems like a very different direction but it looks like a ton of fun! Don't worry too much about fans of the first game complaining about it being different, just keep focusing on making this project the best it can be and you will find a bunch of support from elsewhere - the Risk of Rain community will have a blast with this, for example! Can't wait to try it out :)
Difficult to express how excited I am for this
This looks so sick. Really excited for this! I know many are upset about the procedural generation decision, but I'm actually super excited for it, as roguelikes are my favorite genre
Add more customization options I guess, would be awesome with changeable cloaks or mask for each breaker
As a huge fan of Hyper Light Drifter, I've been anticipating this game for *years*. I want to love it, but the combat animations just really aren't doing it for me. I want to look and feel awesome when fighting-just like in Hyper Light Drifter. But many of the animations feel stilted and lacking in character, especially the 'dash'. I noticed this in the gameplay reveal from a year ago, but I figured the game still has quite a way to go so maybe the animations will get polished up closer to release. Unfortunately this latest footage isn't giving me much confidence that's happening. It's not that the animations are bad, I'm just dying to see them go from B to A+. A game bearing the Hyper Light name deserves that level of polish in its combat.
Yeah, it’s truly a shame…
The only thing this shares with the original is its name
They might as well call it Hyper Light Grifter at this point
So you're upset a game in its alpha doesn't look completed and polished?
looks fine to me
good thing it's early access and they're specifically doing it to obtain feedback like this!
Perfectly valid feedback, go tell the devs, thats what early access alpha is for ;)
Looking forward to give this a spin with my friends. Or at least one friend in particular who plays these kinds of things with me. I'm keen to see how well you guys pull off an immersive story in a world with random elements!
I truly hope the game has options to turn things like depth of field and temporal anti aliasing off so people prone to motion sickness can play it
Cant wait for you to try to top Hyper Light Drifter soundtrack 😌 one of the best of all time, and excited to hear whats next!
Do you know if Disasterpeace has been confirmed as the composer??
@JoshMathews17 not sure, I don't think there's info yet. I sure hope so, that would be AMAZING
@@JoshMathews17 Joel Corelitz is the composer
@@JoshMathews17 Disasterpeace is, unfortunately, not the composer. Troupe Gammag and Joel Corelitz, who worked on Solar Ash, are doing the music for HLB
@@JoshMathews17That guy has moved far beyond indie game work, he's full on Hollywood now.
Delays don’t bother me as long as the product performs well. Can’t wait to play this🤘
A little bit sad about the parry mechanic, because lack of defense made the original require alot more movement and positioning. Plus this has so many words! But im keeping an open mind. Still excited either way!
I love parry mechanics so I might be biased, but as long as the timing is tight I think that it will only adds to the feel of controlling a crowd because if you don't want to move your not forced to. It rewards remembering patterns, but still has a huge risk when things get out of control.
@Marthroy9000 that's true. I'm just bothered if it'll feel closer to unsighted or dark souls (no shade on those games. Love both of them, just thought HLD felt more unique) but I do love parry mechanics.
Dodging in a top down game where you can see all around you is far easier than a game in 3D. You couldn’t play a bullet hell game in 3D unless the FOV was large enough
@zegaskmask5659 I've seen good games do it, but I get your point.
I hope you make another singleplayer narrative game in the Hyper Light world. This looks cool and all but I'm not the biggest fan of procedural generated rogue-lites, especially after how meticulously crafted HLD was.
Yeah I pretty much agree. I feel like “Roguelike/lite” and “Procedural Generation” have become a rather misused and/or overused set of terms that often end up seeming like buzzwords. I think that for a game to deserve to call itself a roguelike/lite, it ought to truly commit to that genre and be completely centered around it: fully procedural with actual permanent death (and turn-based gameplay, traditionally). If those mechanics aren’t strictly adhered to, then calling such a game a roguelike/lite is really just tarnishing the genre’s true definition.
I am nonetheless super excited to play HLB, but I concur that I would much rather have a medium-sized, fully-realized game world that is jam-packed with secrets and lore like HLD instead of a game world that, while perhaps being larger, is generated randomly and is thereby comparatively sparse of meticulously planned content.
As a fan of precedually generated games and roguelikes, this looks sick as hell. It might be different tonalky from HLD but so was Solar Ash so I don’t see any issues with that.
Being a sorta prequel to drifter put the biggest smile on my face, that game had a huge influence on my life when it came out
Cant wait to play breaker, the whole aesthetic is what I love from this franchise
One of my fav things about the original was the quiet. It mostly felt lonely with flurries of combat. Dunno how this will compare but maybe it doesn't really need to.
Congratulations to the Team ! A day one buy for me as I loved and supported Hyper Light Drifter. Truly an innovative game coming up :D
Oh....oh.... I'm seeing the Days that I'm going to pour into this one already.
Very hyperlight drifter + risk of rain 2, im damn excited for this one
Finally got around to playing hyper light drifter this year and it's my favorite i've played this year. I knew it was going to be great but once i was actually playing it i understood why it's so beloved. I'm beyond excited for this even though i'm not the best gamer and i'm generally not into roguelikes that much. However the world of hyper light is just so engrossing and awesome that i'll be playing this a lot regardless
I can't wait to hop in and try this out 😁
I love what's goin on here. You guys made a transition from a retro-looking cyberpunk 2D adventure to an anime-style cyberpunk 3D co-op roguelite with a hint of those retro animations.
I'll definitely be picking this up ASAP.
There is nothing cyberpunk in the art direction though
reading this gave me a stroke
I feel like the game is looking amazing so far, but I think it could use some chunkier feeling hits.
As an amatuer game dev I know it's not always as simple as adding extra hitlag since that can screw over combat balance, but especially with the slower weapons (e.g. the triangle sword at 1:45) it looks like the swing part of the animation could be sped up and there could be more impact to the actual hit. More like an axe catching on wood and less like a knife though butter.
Another BIG one is at the 3:38 mark, with the big 2 handed slash. That looked like it should've had a century or so of hitstop based on the windup, but it seemed more like it just passed through those enemies.
For a perfect example of what I personally think it should look more like, look at that dope-ass parry at 2:50. That felt right. And the hit immediately after seemed chunky as hell. That sh*t is exactly how a hyper light drifter game should feel!
If I were to explain it in a more analytical way;
The swing that I think is animated beautifully, after that parry, has about 4 frames of startup and 17 frames of hitlag in this vid. Compared to the triangle sword, which has around 15 frames of startup and only about 6 or 7 frames of hitlag.
The lighter weapon feels MUCH stronger, and the heavy weapon seems weak by comparison. Just up that 6/7 frames on the heavy weapon to about 20 and It'd look as powerful as a two handed laser sword should feel.
Compare those to HLD: that slash has nearly instant startup and what feels like a solid 20 or so frames of crunchy, beautifully un-animated hitlag so that you KNOW that it hurt. The feeling of hitting something in that game is what all game animators should strive for in a sword slash, in my opinion.
The Prodigal Son has arrived!
GOD I AM BEYOND HYPED FOR THIS. HLD is my favorite video game so I am extremely excited to play this and see how it translates to 3D. Addmittedly I was a bit disappointed to hear that Disasterpeace would not be involved, as his music really made the game IMO, but I am really hoping that Joel Corelitz will do it justice.
Been having this on my wishlist for so long now!
so unbelievably excited oh my god
Very Excited for this, looks like you've done a fantastic job of capturing the 2D aesthetic and shifting to 3D
I’m begging you guys to make that dash more impactful
from what people who tried the demo said, it feels just as snappy as drifter :) hope they can get it to look as good though
Ive had this on my wishlist for what seems like forever and was hoping this would end up being good. From the looks of it my hopes are answered. Looks awesome! Day one buy for sure
As a fan if both HKD and rogue-likes, I can't wait for the game and, considering your track record, i have absolute trust, that this game will be great
Co-op only ? Or balanced for solo as well ? Hoping you can properly progress solo as well
I'm still curious of how many characters and weapons are going to be available at the start of early access since they mentioned the two bosses.
I can understand why some people are a bit off put by the art style. I personally think it looks amazing and I'm really excited to play it in January!
Thanks guys! Looking forward to
Hyper Light Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo
Speaking of that the music in this doesn't seem so epic as HLD
Zelda + Risk of Rain 2, I’m into it 🤞🏼❤️
Please add online multiplayer PVP to this game & make it available on all cross-platform💯
I USE TO PRAY FOR TIMES LIKE THIS
It would be pretty cool so see Judgement make an appearance even though this is decades before HLD
Im hoping there will be more travesal options i really enjoyed the solar ash movement and im looking forward to seeing if this game can do something similar
I have been waiting for this game for so long. Beyond excited to play it this January!
At first, I also thought, "From charming 2D game to generic 3rd person roguelite." 😅✌
But then I watched the trailer again, keeping the potential for a partial "BotW" evolution in mind, and now I'm mildly hyped again. Only time will tell what the future will bring 🚀👍
Hope we will see HLD II at some point, that game was really on point in audiovisuals, story and gameplay.
looks great, hyper light drifter is one of my fav games of all time and i cant wait to discover the whole world all over again!
I'm pretty excited for the game but man, this soundtrack...
I will happily buy it.
This is my most anticipated game of 2025. I wish I could play in the early access, but my pc can’t run current gen games. If/when early access hits consoles, I’m 100% fully invested.
Can’t wait to see people add their sonas to play as
Looks amazing I'm looking forward to checking it out.
A nice game, we are looking forward to it. We hope that you can set the NumLock key to control the game, since we only control it with NumLock keys.
Wow! super excited to have a release date for this game after years of anticipation since playing HLD :)
honestly i like alot of the aspects that are brought in, but hangliders do feel a little gimmicky. very glad to see the combat is strategic and shares elements with HLD and some souls-like combat.
I'm gonna say that I am cautiously hyped, while I'm really looking forward to this, something tells me that this game would fit so much better if it was a spin-off rather than a sequel (or prequel lol)
I'll admit that I'd like some things to be different, but that would be too much for a simple comment.
In any case, I definitely want to see how it will turn out!
Yayyyyyy now I can ask it for my birthday (01/17) let's gooooo
This looks so much fun. Can't wait to try it. I'm on ps5 tho, will it be available to try in early access there as well at some point?
I really need to open my eyes to more games cus I've never in my entire life heard of this game, and I see 90% of people in the comments saying they are hyped for the game while being a huge hyperlight fan. From PAST hyperlight games, like WHERE ARE ALL THESE GAMES IVE NEVER HEARD OF.....ok done
PLAY HYPER LIGHT DRIFTERRRRR
The game looks pretty fun , kinda sucks to see people wanting this game to fail for their work with sweet baby inc
Really wish they would of done a spiritual sequel in the 2D style. It really feels like something special was lost in the move to 3D imo
Looks stunning - people that played the first game are complaining ofc - I love the new direction and i m glad they’re not just recycling the same concept over and over.
Can’t wait to play it
HOORAY!🎉🎉🎉
This looks like a departure from HLD, but I have faith in Heart Machine. I haven't been disappointed by a game of theirs yet!
Instant yes! Looks like a great game that respects my time while still offering pretty much everything I ask for from a game. Clearly a game made by people who wanted something to exist and wanted to do it right!
This is my first time seeing this series, but I can see that it is extremely promising and can go so many right ways, but it can also go wrong in a lot of ways,
I am very intrigued on this game’s development
I may check it out if it comes to consoles. Looks good!
omg I never heard Solar Ash came out until this video reminded me of the title and I googled it...
Reading the comments here I get the impression a lot of people don't even know about Solar Ash? Well I'm glad Heart Machine is improving their marketing a bit.
So excited for this. Nice work team
I love the tails on the characters! 💖💖
Im hyped for this never tried drifter but this looks more appealing to me.
I'm really excited for this title, and I really hope it does well.
Looks great. I hope it’s not exclusively multiplayer though.
Hoping the game will move up to 4 player co-op as they add more breakers.
Def picking this up day one
Muito bom ver a continuação de Hyper Light Drifter! Animado! 😁
I am so excited for this! Great job, team!
Looks good, however we have not seen any character customization in this video, and the character sets seems the same through the clip.
I enjoy adding my own flavor to how the character looks.
Do we have character customization, brakers are classes or already generated characters?
It seems like there's at least alternate colors but I think the plan is there are 6 breakers (2 blue people, 2 tanukis, 2 crows?) currently.
2D games (or isometric) going 3D has to be my favorite genre of sequel
LETS GOOOOO! I’m so excited. I was so worried that due to some of the layoffs that there would be some delays or they would have to crunch. I’m so glad to see how that seems to not be the case, although it’s a little harder to tell when it comes to crunch, because it looks so high quality.
You actually believe they have nothing to do with this game? I got a bridge I can sell ya, half off , today only!
SBI were not responsible in any way shape or form for the layoffs.
In addition, the developers cut ties with them more than a year ago, and refused to incorporate any of their work or consultation in the final product
@@ClearwaterUK oh dam I didn’t know. Thanks for informing me. I edited my comment, thank you for informing me so I don’t accidentally spread misinformation.
@@TheRealCaptainLavender You do you bro. If you think that SBI’s influence is still present then go right ahead. You’re welcome to your opinion. I’m just excited to see what Heart Machine specifically has to offer.
I was so ready to get this day 1 but it looks like I'll be waiting for 1.0.
The game looks amazing!
I wonder if it will be Steam Deck Verified. Also, imagine split-screen support!
i didnt know much about you guys until i came across a.. documentary(?) about this game. and you guys just blew me away. Glad to see this coming out!
I’m intrigued. Can’t wait to try it for myself rather than make assumptions. Although I understand waiting & wondering if it will compare to the creepy mystique of the OG. Looks like I will play it through.
Hyper Light Breaker, Risk of Rain 2, and Windblown.
Collect them all and you can fight the secret final boss Johnathan Neon Roguelite.
I follow this hype as much as I do with silksong, ever patient, ever excited for the best outcome. I believe in you guys!!!!!!!!
We'll definitely get GTA6 before Silksong.
I salute the Devs, looks great! i cant wait for this!
There are very particular reasons I love HLD, and I’m not sure this game achieves those, especially after such a drastic perspective and aesthetic change. It looks fun, and I do enjoy rogue-lites, but I’ll reserve my expectations for final release. Hoping for some smooth gameplay during EA to assuage my concerns.
This is just like risk of rain.
From 2d to 3d and I think its going to be great!
Is it like HLD? Not at all
But does it look fun and interesting? Hell yeah!
These comments are really disappointing to read. Like god forbid they don't make HLD2! Who cares? And who's to say they won't make it the future? I'm super excited about this more Risk of Rain esq. gameplay. Like imagine if the Mario or Castlevania franchise made exclusively side-scrollers just because the first game was a side scroller- be for real. Hyper Light is a UNIVERSE they created- not a single genre of top down zelda-like games. It could be Hyper Light Kart for all i care
Not a big fan of roguelikes but i'll make sure to give it a try as i trust the studio whom have made my fav games
if it has ingame text chat, I'll defo play it! 🙏
Wasn't it Hyper light Drifter that had the most unforgettable synth soundtrack? That is what I want to hear.
I really liked hld but for some reason i am also excited for this game as a whole being different and I'll probably pick it up because the vibe is really solid.
Kinda confused about the sweet baby thing since there's like no dialogue and everyone kinda looks like an alien by default but yeah if it were me i wouldn't have felt the need to hire them for anything if that makes sense
I love everything about this project! I hope you guys do great and go all the way to support console play! I'm in the #Playstation 5 ecosystem rooting for you guys to get there!!
Excited for the game and combat seems cool. But I feel the same critiques a lot of other people have here in the comments. Impact of dash/attacks/movements, somewhat the art style, hesitancy regarding the depth of exploration and whether this will be just a grind loot fest. I feel like outlining players/enemies/npcs in cel shading might add more personality to the style of the game. And adding slight vibration to heavy impact attacks or when your player is hit while creating more personality focused animations
Ngl, Hyper Light Drifter hadn't clicked with me, but this game looks promising.
Swear silksong was gonna release before HLB😮💨oh well, go heart machine
