As much as I would like to see something more from the HLD franchise, HLB feels very tonally different from the mystique that really made the original unique- and I find it hard to believe that a similar emphasis on exploration can be kept with procedurally generated areas compared to handcrafted dungeons and proper level design. I want to be excited for it but I’m not convinced it’ll bring the same energy that made me so invested in HLD.
I mean it's a Rogue like, so having unique crafted set pieces wouldn't really make sense in a game that you're likely meant to have dozens if not hundreds of runs in. Not saying it's good or bad, but it is different. By design.
I think HLB is gonna have more replayability than HLD at the cost of being much more simple and less mysterious. It will be a totally different experience but I think it will still be fun

@@mageferago It was obvious to me for a long time that was what it was gonna be, especially since the Edge magazine had Alx saying that there would be a lore reason for why it even shifts.
I bet the gameplay will feel significantly different. Risk of Rain 2 (like Risk of Rain 1) has a lot of very plodding "run away and spam" gameplay whereas this looks like it (like Hyper Light Drifter) has much more focus on making your individual actions very intentional. Bigger slower weighter melee attacks. Tho the guns look like they allow for some "run away and spam".
This looks absolutely amazing, but I feel it's missing part of the creepy, hostile feeling from hyper light drifter from the sharp/jagged edges of the pixel art. Everything looks really smooth, and although it looks really good and I loved it in solar ash, it's just tonally very different. Maybe some of the enemies and architecture could be changed while keeping the environments and characters the same to contrast them from each other. Also there seems to be a lack of impact to attacks that made the combat in drifter feel so deliberate and satisfying. Overall though I'm very excited, and curious to see how an open world roguelite would work.
I think a part of the "creepiness" comes from the fact that HLD is top-down. Obscuring the sky makes the game feel more claustrophobic. It's nearly impossible to get the same feeling in a 3D game without making the whole game take place indoors. By default you're going to have more to see and more space to move so it's not going to feel as liminal or secretive. I am excited for the game, I just think a lot of people didn't want a genre change from the same IP. It's a very rare thing to happen in games and I get why it's weird.
I feel like that could also be intentional, Hyper Light Drifter feels like a dying world, or one that has already died and is just there. This one is mentioned that they're trying to bring back civilization after war, so there's more hope and that shows with the artstyle
As a huge fan of Hyper Light Drifter, I've been anticipating this game for *years*. I want to love it, but the combat animations just really aren't doing it for me. I want to look and feel awesome when fighting-just like in Hyper Light Drifter. But many of the animations feel stilted and lacking in character, especially the 'dash'. I noticed this in the gameplay reveal from a year ago, but I figured the game still has quite a way to go so maybe the animations will get polished up closer to release. Unfortunately this latest footage isn't giving me much confidence that's happening. It's not that the animations are bad, I'm just dying to see them go from B to A+. A game bearing the Hyper Light name deserves that level of polish in its combat.
This seems like a very different direction but it looks like a ton of fun! Don't worry too much about fans of the first game complaining about it being different, just keep focusing on making this project the best it can be and you will find a bunch of support from elsewhere - the Risk of Rain community will have a blast with this, for example! Can't wait to try it out :)
I hope you make another singleplayer narrative game in the Hyper Light world. This looks cool and all but I'm not the biggest fan of procedural generated rogue-lites, especially after how meticulously crafted HLD was.
I'm overall kinda excited for the game, the primary issue I have is that I'm not psyched about the paragliders. It feels like everything since Breath of the Wild has had a paraglider and I won't lie they don't feel like an original or interesting way to explore a game world anymore. Part of what made me fall in love with Solar Ash Kingdom was that the exploration and movement felt fluid, dynamic, and I wasn't restricted to slow-falling in whatever direction I wanted to go as the primary means of exploration like you would on a paraglider. Not to mention that Solar Ash felt fairly unique in terms of movement all on its own, and I was really hoping a movement system like that would be present in HLB, but I can see that's likely not going to be the case. I'll probably still end up getting Hyper Light Breaker and playing a fair bit because I want to support the developers. I figured early-ish feedback would be appreciated, even though I know that at this point it's extremely unlikely to change much.
While i'm fairly unfamiliar with the HL series thus far, i totally agree with your sentiments about the glider stuff. I think it'd be cool if they added movement customization options for your build like x piece of gear can help you run super fast or z piece of gear will make you hover instead. I feel that this would allow people to choose their preferred method of mobility and make it more interesting than the usual copy paste zelda glider. but im hopeful nonetheless.

I was looking forward to this game, but right now, I am kind of... not a fan. A: While the color scheme is there, the art direction itself does not really feel that aligned with first game. It was generally more blocky, especially the landscapes, they were all clear-cut, abrupt edges and so on. It was artificial, alien and interesting. This new, more natural way, it is... bland? Generic? And now the few things that are actually blocky like the few VFX or structures now just stand out and don't fit a tall. B: Same with enemies, they all feel like a mish mash, mashup of random creatures that don't really... fit? HLD had carefully crafted enemies which all blended well into the environment, but the things I am seeing here just stick out like sore thumb. C: Another prequel... I have two problems with that personally. Firstly it seems that everyone makes mostly prequels nowadays. Secondly, part of fun of HLD was the fact that its world was drowned with mysterious history, we could've guessed what happened, we could deduce it, but most of the history was still hidden, obscure, sometimes downright mystical and intentionally obtuse. This, even if adding interesting details or a nice new story, will inevitably break some of that mysterious charm for me. D: I get you wanted to make your own spin on a glider/horse game and I can respect that, but I am personally filled up with them these days.
As a fan of precedually generated games and roguelikes, this looks sick as hell. It might be different tonalky from HLD but so was Solar Ash so I don’t see any issues with that.
A little bit sad about the parry mechanic, because lack of defense made the original require alot more movement and positioning. Plus this has so many words! But im keeping an open mind. Still excited either way!
I love parry mechanics so I might be biased, but as long as the timing is tight I think that it will only adds to the feel of controlling a crowd because if you don't want to move your not forced to. It rewards remembering patterns, but still has a huge risk when things get out of control.
@Marthroy9000 that's true. I'm just bothered if it'll feel closer to unsighted or dark souls (no shade on those games. Love both of them, just thought HLD felt more unique) but I do love parry mechanics.
Dodging in a top down game where you can see all around you is far easier than a game in 3D. You couldn’t play a bullet hell game in 3D unless the FOV was large enough
Is this co-op only? The game looks great but I’m not sure I’ll play it much if it’s dependent on having 2 friends online and willing to play at all times.
There are very particular reasons I love HLD, and I’m not sure this game achieves those, especially after such a drastic perspective and aesthetic change. It looks fun, and I do enjoy rogue-lites, but I’ll reserve my expectations for final release. Hoping for some smooth gameplay during EA to assuage my concerns.
I love what's goin on here. You guys made a transition from a retro-looking cyberpunk 2D adventure to an anime-style cyberpunk 3D co-op roguelite with a hint of those retro animations. I'll definitely be picking this up ASAP.
@@JoshMathews17 Disasterpeace is, unfortunately, not the composer. Troupe Gammag and Joel Corelitz, who worked on Solar Ash, are doing the music for HLB
In my heart i truly wish this game the best and for it to be good. Hyper light drifter has been my favorite game since release period, but the mentioning of procedural generation and this honestly just being a reskinned risk of rain 2 gameplay loop has me not interested. Hyper light drifter was an experience through and through because of dedication to intimately crafted spaces and exploration that truly made you feel like you were in a much larger world than you were in. I have no qualms with the art style or anything but I hope one day there will be a return to form with a proper open world adventure rather than just... well... risk of rain 2 reskin.
Risk of Rain 2 reskin..? I mean, some artstyles like the environments, are similar, but HLB seems to be dramatically different in gameplay and progression. As for Procedural Generation, understandable doubts. I do know a game that does it well while still maintaining a sense of exploration, lore hunting, and mystery: Wizard With A Gun. That game explains it with a imperfect time-rewind, but there is always things that are too important to never restore. Idk how well they do this in HLB, it is a easy thing to mess up.
Finally got around to playing hyper light drifter this year and it's my favorite i've played this year. I knew it was going to be great but once i was actually playing it i understood why it's so beloved. I'm beyond excited for this even though i'm not the best gamer and i'm generally not into roguelikes that much. However the world of hyper light is just so engrossing and awesome that i'll be playing this a lot regardless
I really need to open my eyes to more games cus I've never in my entire life heard of this game, and I see 90% of people in the comments saying they are hyped for the game while being a huge hyperlight fan. From PAST hyperlight games, like WHERE ARE ALL THESE GAMES IVE NEVER HEARD OF.....ok done
As a fan if both HKD and rogue-likes, I can't wait for the game and, considering your track record, i have absolute trust, that this game will be great
I really wish this wasn't a rogue-lite. This is really disappointing. The first game was so amazing because it felt like a real world, and there was so much detail you could tell it was handcrafted. Unfortunately, procedural generation is going to ruin this. If they wanted to make a rogue-lite, it should have been as a completely separate game. Trying to tie this back to HLD will only disappoint fans because this is just not the same. It would have been amazing if they did a smaller version of Breath of the Wild and turned it into a small but detailed open world at least.
my primary issue is that this is a hyperlight game… with WORDS? numbers are excusable because it’s a rougelike but small things like using a stylized crown symbol in crown locations in the map or using the preview system for upgrades make the game more in touch with the original
I believe anything "in-world" will still be without words, they seem to just want to prioritize clarity for the player here. The idea of HLD was cool, but I understand why they've chosen to use text here
Gamers when devs don't rehash the same idea non-stop :( Gamers when devs rehash the same idea non-stop :( You guys can just never be happy lol This looks cool af
Im hoping there will be more travesal options i really enjoyed the solar ash movement and im looking forward to seeing if this game can do something similar
One of my fav things about the original was the quiet. It mostly felt lonely with flurries of combat. Dunno how this will compare but maybe it doesn't really need to.
This is just like risk of rain. From 2d to 3d and I think its going to be great! Is it like HLD? Not at all But does it look fun and interesting? Hell yeah!
Looks stunning - people that played the first game are complaining ofc - I love the new direction and i m glad they’re not just recycling the same concept over and over. Can’t wait to play it
Wow! super excited to have a release date for this game after years of anticipation since playing HLD :) honestly i like alot of the aspects that are brought in, but hangliders do feel a little gimmicky. very glad to see the combat is strategic and shares elements with HLD and some souls-like combat.
I'm gonna say that I am cautiously hyped, while I'm really looking forward to this, something tells me that this game would fit so much better if it was a spin-off rather than a sequel (or prequel lol) I'll admit that I'd like some things to be different, but that would be too much for a simple comment. In any case, I definitely want to see how it will turn out!
With this being a co-op rogue-lite, does that mean it is strictly co-op or will we be able to play this solo? Because playing single player is my preferred way to play.
omg I never heard Solar Ash came out until this video reminded me of the title and I googled it... Reading the comments here I get the impression a lot of people don't even know about Solar Ash? Well I'm glad Heart Machine is improving their marketing a bit.
Instant yes! Looks like a great game that respects my time while still offering pretty much everything I ask for from a game. Clearly a game made by people who wanted something to exist and wanted to do it right!
This is my first time seeing this series, but I can see that it is extremely promising and can go so many right ways, but it can also go wrong in a lot of ways, I am very intrigued on this game’s development
It’s easier to sell 3D games to normies. They need to justify their purchase every step of the way and 3D looks more advanced/expensive than pixel art to a normie.
There's promise here, but from this current footage, it looks like an anemic and anorexic-Wayfinder. If the game comes out in this sort of state, be prepared to flop. Biomes look barren(lots of color but not much else), combat looks derivative and lacks innovation(Wayfinder clone), and the rogue-lite elements weren't fleshed out in any meaningful way(no hype generated/just another game using rogue-lite as a niche-holder, without any significant or unique take on the genre). Don't take your foot off the pedal, as this game could be a great addition to the world, if you actually put in the effort. Don't slack off when you're so close to the finish line, now it's time to kick it into high-gear.
I really liked hld but for some reason i am also excited for this game as a whole being different and I'll probably pick it up because the vibe is really solid. Kinda confused about the sweet baby thing since there's like no dialogue and everyone kinda looks like an alien by default but yeah if it were me i wouldn't have felt the need to hire them for anything if that makes sense
I'm really surprised to see so many people sharing a similar sentiment to what I've had when keeping an eye on the development of this project. I'm really happy to see that it's being put across in a way that is respectful and helpful. I'm probably going to enjoy HLB regardless, it's my kind of game. But it doesn't really look like an entry into the world of HL. I can't imagine how difficult it is to translate a game from top down into 3D AND pixel art into this. But it's clear to see you're struggling with it. All the HLB stuff so far looks great, but it's also lacking the 'soul' and overall vibe that made HLD good. And don't get me wrong, I don't think it being 3D or Rouge-Lite is necessarily the issue. Open-world and procedural potentially is a bit though. The environments look off at the minute. Let me clear, I don't think there's anything wrong with multiple biomes, and exploring new ones not seen in HLD, I think that's great, and obviously it's set in a different time. I just worry that you've changed too much all at once, and it's leaving HLB feeling like a game inspired by HLD rather than being any kind of follow-on or actually related media. The odd things like the unlock symbol and diamond effects are instantly recognisable, but aren't really fitting with the rest of the visuals at the moment. The art team have done a good job, it's high quality work. I just don't think the direction and overall scope of the game is right.
I feel the same way. HLD was one of my favourite games years ago, but every time I see more of HLB it just looks like they watered down all the atmosphere and feeling that made HLD so immersive and enthralling. I'm also personally just growing tired of rogue lites in general, there is only so many times I can play procedurally generated content for hours on end before I just want something with actual meat on the bones.
Excited for the game and combat seems cool. But I feel the same critiques a lot of other people have here in the comments. Impact of dash/attacks/movements, somewhat the art style, hesitancy regarding the depth of exploration and whether this will be just a grind loot fest. I feel like outlining players/enemies/npcs in cel shading might add more personality to the style of the game. And adding slight vibration to heavy impact attacks or when your player is hit while creating more personality focused animations
I love everything about this project! I hope you guys do great and go all the way to support console play! I'm in the #Playstation 5 ecosystem rooting for you guys to get there!!
ngl great job continuing the look and sound of hyper light drifter, but i feel 3D on top of being a build. craft, explore type of game just isnt the right way, maybe turning 3D with the same gameplay of drifter while it being a continuation would be the way to go. At least thats what i'd thought it be lol, this just has the gameplay of no man's sky with the look and sound of hyper light drifter and i dont have much expectations from it
Is it a build and craft game? I haven't seen them mentioning it. It seems keen on combat and exploration like the original. Or do you mean crafting better weapons? God, I hope that's not a core feature.
It's not a build, craft, explore game. it's an open world hack and slash with roguelite elements. How is it the gameplay of No Man's Sky? Have you played No Man's Sky? There is very little combat in it. This trailer was like 80% combat. A better comparison would be Hyper Light Breaker looks like Breath of the Wild and Risk of Rain 2 combined.
@@theoneandonlyskrubzit looks like you will upgrade stuff with an in-game resource in between runs like any other roguelite. OP clearly meant crafting like a survival game. They compared Hyper Light Breaker to No Man's Sky..that doesn't make any sense.
@@Over_Toasted in terms of combat focused games, having resource gathering as a large portion makes me wanna scream. Except kingdom hearts. It was fun cus of the special ways you get some of the stuff. I just hope it's not a huge portion.
I really hope there will be a lock-on feature, since it seems like the combat is fairly souls-like apart from the shooting. I can't imagine trying to fight a crown boss without being able to lock on to it.
@Over_Toasted Just the combat, in the sense that you have to learn enemy attack patterns, time your dodges, take advantage of attack windows, parry, etc. Obviously the game is rogue-like overall, but the combat is of the variety that is typically accompanied by a lock-on feature, the most common of which being souls-likes.
@@mercuryinretrograde420 No it doesn't? Have you never played any old school hack n slash games? You hardly ever need to parry or dodge. @@JoshMathews17 Disasterpeace is, unfortunately, not the composer. Troupe Gammag and Joel Corelitz, who worked on Solar Ash, are doing the music for HLB
@@JoshMathews17That guy has moved far beyond indie game work, he's full on Hollywood now.
I have no qualms with the art style or anything but I hope one day there will be a return to form with a proper open world adventure rather than just... well... risk of rain 2 reskin.
agreed except the art style blows too
risk of rain? this looks like genshin
Add more customization options I guess, would be awesome with changeable cloaks or mask for each breaker
PLAY HYPER LIGHT DRIFTERRRRR
As a fan if both HKD and rogue-likes, I can't wait for the game and, considering your track record, i have absolute trust, that this game will be great
so unbelievably excited oh my god
I can understand why some people are a bit off put by the art style. I personally think it looks amazing and I'm really excited to play it in January!
Congratulations to the Team ! A day one buy for me as I loved and supported Hyper Light Drifter. Truly an innovative game coming up :D
This plays nothing like Fortnite but for some reason fortnite comes to mind while watching this trailer
question? how long is a game/instance estimated to take?
I'm pretty excited for the game but man, this soundtrack...
I will happily buy it.
The idea of HLD was cool, but I understand why they've chosen to use text here
Hell yes
Been having this on my wishlist for so long now!
Gamers when devs don't rehash the same idea non-stop :(

You guys can just never be happy lol This looks cool af
2D games (or isometric) going 3D has to be my favorite genre of sequel
Im hoping there will be more travesal options i really enjoyed the solar ash movement and im looking forward to seeing if this game can do something similar
Looks great. I hope it’s not exclusively multiplayer though.
This looks so much fun. Can't wait to try it. I'm on ps5 tho, will it be available to try in early access there as well at some point?
Would this be playable and fun for solo? I love HLD and I play almost exclusively solo
One of my fav things about the original was the quiet. It mostly felt lonely with flurries of combat. Dunno how this will compare but maybe it doesn't really need to.
I USE TO PRAY FOR TIMES LIKE THIS
I salute the Devs, looks great! i cant wait for this!
I have been waiting for this game for so long. Beyond excited to play it this January!
This is just like risk of rain.
From 2d to 3d and I think its going to be great!
Is it like HLD? Not at all
But does it look fun and interesting? Hell yeah!
It would be pretty cool so see Judgement make an appearance even though this is decades before HLD
I am so excited for this! Great job, team!
Looks stunning - people that played the first game are complaining ofc - I love the new direction and i m glad they’re not just recycling the same concept over and over.
Can’t wait to play it
Wow! super excited to have a release date for this game after years of anticipation since playing HLD :)
honestly i like alot of the aspects that are brought in, but hangliders do feel a little gimmicky. very glad to see the combat is strategic and shares elements with HLD and some souls-like combat.
I'm gonna say that I am cautiously hyped, while I'm really looking forward to this, something tells me that this game would fit so much better if it was a spin-off rather than a sequel (or prequel lol)
I'll admit that I'd like some things to be different, but that would be too much for a simple comment.
In any case, I definitely want to see how it will turn out!
Boss: "Hey Jeff, hard at work again?"
Jeff: "Jep, 🤷♂"
Boss: "Jeff, I have to fire you"
Doesn't look like many fans are thrilled about the direction of this
Hope we will see HLD II at some point, that game was really on point in audiovisuals, story and gameplay.
HOORAY!🎉🎉🎉
looks great, hyper light drifter is one of my fav games of all time and i cant wait to discover the whole world all over again!
With this being a co-op rogue-lite, does that mean it is strictly co-op or will we be able to play this solo? Because playing single player is my preferred way to play.
Hyper Light Breaker, Risk of Rain 2, and Windblown.
Collect them all and you can fight the secret final boss Johnathan Neon Roguelite.
Looks amazing I'm looking forward to checking it out.
omg I never heard Solar Ash came out until this video reminded me of the title and I googled it...
Reading the comments here I get the impression a lot of people don't even know about Solar Ash? Well I'm glad Heart Machine is improving their marketing a bit.
Do the biomes change in colour? I really want procedural colour palettes as well
If this is done right, this could easily become the runaway hit of Winter 2025. It's like a Combination of Ys, Zelda, and Risk of Rain
Out of curiosity, how long can we expect the game to be in Early Access?
Said it. 1 year
@Isaiah9277 Thank you, I missed that part of the video.
Instant yes! Looks like a great game that respects my time while still offering pretty much everything I ask for from a game. Clearly a game made by people who wanted something to exist and wanted to do it right!
This is my first time seeing this series, but I can see that it is extremely promising and can go so many right ways, but it can also go wrong in a lot of ways,
I am very intrigued on this game’s development
Why many indie sequels are 3D? Wizard of legend 2, Moonlighter 2, Windblown, this one... I'm not angry, it's just curious
Windblown isn't a sequel to Dead Cells. It is it's own thing.
Risk of rain!
It’s easier to sell 3D games to normies. They need to justify their purchase every step of the way and 3D looks more advanced/expensive than pixel art to a normie.
Wider appeal.
Because they usually do pixel art since its cheaper. Now that they have more money, they can invest in 3D
I follow this hype as much as I do with silksong, ever patient, ever excited for the best outcome. I believe in you guys!!!!!!!!
We'll definitely get GTA6 before Silksong.
I love the tails on the characters! 💖💖
Looks, absolutely amazing, cant wait!
So excited for this. Nice work team
So, we can expect basebuilding? roombuilding? Or is the hub prebuilt?
Thanks guys! Looking forward to
Hyper Light Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo
Speaking of that the music in this doesn't seem so epic as HLD
I'm really excited for this title, and I really hope it does well.
What's character customization looking like? >.>
So is there not gonna be character creation?
The game looks amazing!
I wonder if it will be Steam Deck Verified. Also, imagine split-screen support!
I'm also personally just growing tired of rogue lites in general, there is only so many times I can play procedurally generated content for hours on end before I just want something with actual meat on the bones.
will this game have ultrawide support?
If it runs well on the Steam Deck or if it’s on GeForce Now then I’ll definitely be buying this.
Wasn't it Hyper light Drifter that had the most unforgettable synth soundtrack? That is what I want to hear.
game looks much much more stable. I'm now a lot more excited for the game. I was really worried about the performance after the last few show case.
Similar vibes to Risk of Rain 2 especially with the swap from 2d to 3d. Definitely playing this it looks super fun.
The combat looks sooooo satisfying
Not a big fan of roguelikes but i'll make sure to give it a try as i trust the studio whom have made my fav games
No characters customization like outfits/armor sets etc?
I love everything about this project! I hope you guys do great and go all the way to support console play! I'm in the #Playstation 5 ecosystem rooting for you guys to get there!!
so much negativity, you guys realize this game doesn't have to be tailor made for you specifically
ngl great job continuing the look and sound of hyper light drifter, but i feel 3D on top of being a build. craft, explore type of game just isnt the right way, maybe turning 3D with the same gameplay of drifter while it being a continuation would be the way to go.
Also, No Man's Sky is great.
It doesn't really look souls-like to me.
@@ThatGuySquippythat describes every single to ever exist except turn based games
There is a lock on.
@@mercuryinretrograde420 No it doesn't?
Have you never played any old school hack n slash games? You hardly ever need to parry or dodge. You can just button mash and string together a bunch of combos because you almost always stun-lock the enemies.
The dev even says as much in the video; "you can't just button mash".
