Just bought an Audi TT specifically for the motor to build for racing. Similar story as your customer the person I brought it off from had previously bought that car from a flipper but they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it so they threw parts cannon hoping it would magically fix the car.
When they've got to the spark plugs, it was saturated with oil that they decided to get rid of the car because they've misdiagnosed it as a head gasket leak.
Long story short I bought the car for $1000, just to find the problem was just boost pressure leaking from the brake booster vacuum lines and some more towards the SAI lines and Valve cover gaskets. Quite peppy in stock form but it'll spend the rest of its life on the racetrack.

i still prefer old time compression tester rather than getting out scope
Sometimes bigger motors when pulling plugs sucks. I prefer the relative compression with my scanner.
i threw mine away years ago. once u get ur setup and learn it ,its not bad. wave forms show u so much more. thats just me. i can see all the valves ,piston movement ,idle compression ,wot compression, back pressure in exhaust. the old pressure gauge cant show all this. again its just my preference
do a simple quick test. press accelerator to the floor so it will go into clear flood mode crank engine and listen to the cadence cranking sound. if its un even u no mechanical, if its even investigate the other. just that quick. hope this helps.every time i have misfire complaints this is what i do first to keep me from doing all the unnecessary stuff. fast efficient
That’s what I did. I did the manual gage for the video. To show you all what is going on. I chose not to do a relative compression test because I’ve made videos on that in past.

@@3TsMOBILEAUTOMOTIVEREPAIRyou didn't pull the fuel pump relay. So if the motor was fine, you would have to change the oil from dumping fuel in the cylinders.

Cost doesn’t matter to me. I judge the job on what is right for the customer and how much of a liability it is for me.
