  • With Prime Minister Narendra Modi all set to travel to the United States for his first state visit in the next couple of days, people on both sides are expecting an all-time high in India-US relations. The visit has become significant with both countries working together on ICET, who have recently concluded a UAV drone deal and are collaborating on defence technology. In this edition of ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, we discuss the significance and importance of PM Modi’s visit with foreign policy expert and President of India’s premier think tank, Observer Research foundation Samir Saran. Saran is a known face in the arena of diplomacy and is curator of Raisina Dialogue. In this episode, Saran talks about how India-US relations have evolved over the last two decades, threats from China and how India has emerged as a natural ally for the world’s most powerful country.

To be a Enemy of America is dangerous but to be a friend of America is fatal.
      Henry Kissinger
Classic example is during the entirety of the second World 🌎🌍 war American company GM or General motors makes military trucks for Nazi Germany named Blitz but on the other hand American Government was providing military aid to the arch enemy of Germany which was Britain 🇬🇧 so it is very difficult to understand the real intention of Americans because American political leaders think 🤔 something, tell something else and do entirely something different.

In this conversation, Samir's expression of his views on geopolitcs, Indo-US relations, ... was far, far better than anything he has done at the Raisina Dialogs or at Davos. The main factor, I think, is the anchor. Well done, Smita. 👏 👏👏

The new trend of podcasts allows immersive discussions on specific subjects that need depth. Experts can drill down on most subjects. Samir is a brutally honest public intellectual. No pussy footing. The typical Western academics and intellectuals try to speak wirh forked tongues, and Samir would give it back to them frontally on public forums. Post 2014 and later 2019 our resolve to punch commensurate to our weight spanning across our public firmament including even the deracinated , fence-sitting bureacrats and diplomats has sharpened. . Our angularity as a nation in an angry mode , impatient to get to our place on the high table is only matched by our determined effort at building our comprehensive national power. We are succeeding hugely. This is an India that leader nations had not bargained for. Great times ahead if only it were not for our native quislings and congenital nay sayers. Lets hope we put them on the mat. For ever.

Am surprised about Smita Prakash's understanding of the Ashley Tellis article. As an American, Ashley Tellis is merely cautioning his compatriots against any assumption that India will function 'like an ally', quietly do it's bidding or line up against China as a matter, of course. I think it has already been clarified that the headline is not of his making.

What an amazing conversation. Mr. Saran is able to paint vast canvases with a few masterful strokes… take his parting line, for example: “The US and Japan and others elevated the lives of a billion people since 1945. Now it is time for India and the US to together elevate the next 6 billion, and this has to be the agenda.”
Or, “Remember the future envisioned by Vajpayee, Clinton and Bush? That future is now, This visit is where it becomes real”
Extraordinarily powerful ideas. He epitomises the qualities of an evolved thinker, passionate about thinking, yet dispassionate about the subject of thought.
This is one conversation I’ll need to return again, ideas were flying so thick and fast off the bat, I’ll need multiple action replays to figure out what was being communicated 😅.

Sameer ji stated what is still not evident to the western powers, namely, that China wants to dominate the world like an emperor.
US is still scrambling for dialogues with China to come to a understanding for mutual Co existence but it can't see the pattern in China's moves.
To be fair even the current Indian leadership tried the one on one dialogue at Wuhan & then at Mahabalipuram to build mutual understanding & respect but what China is aiming at became apparent after Galwan.
Since then at least Bharat is very clear that China is an implacable enemy & all moves since then have been with this realisation.
Bharat needs the technology of the western powers to build up its military deterrence & is putting up with all the crap of the West to that end.
A military clash between the NATO & China & its allies is inevitable because China wants to be the undisputed power & no diplomacy will stop that clash.
This is going to be a decade that will see huge changes to the world order.

Smitha Ma'am i dont know if you will see this or not but anyway 1 humble suggestion - please stop interfering the guest or word feeding them while they answer. Only difference Joe Rogan has with other podcaster that he does not interfere, he ask question and wait for speaker to conclude 100% before adding or counter questioning.
I know u r a very senior Journalist and these guests are your friends thus the urge to contribute more but trust me for viewers it is very irritating. this suggestion coming from very pure heart so apologies but hope it can help.

Namaskara Smitha, I am kannadiga living in Germany. I like your podcasts very much because of your excellent preparation + intensive knowledge * great way of getting the views out of speaker on each subject. But some times I feel, since you know the topic you intervene and that looses our thoughts and track of listenng the speaker. example during Shashi tharoors thali anaalogy being explained by Samir. i had to rewind and hear again. please minimise joining words during the explanations.

India has made great strides, but some misconceptions about the US: 1. The US has digital vaccination cards, and every state has its own implementation and all available via FHIR standard, and infact some states like Illinois maintain extensive vaccination records which are easy to download and get certificates for. 2. The youth of the US are very confident, and thats not changing. If anything, the indian counterparts are definitely catching up.
